I'm looking at putting a computer in my van so that I can watch video etc without having to take my laptop away. I wondered if anyone had an old PC tower that they would like to donate for either a beer or I have an old G3 Mac that you could have.
The spec of the computer doesn't matter too much as it's only going to be used to run DVDs through
Thanks in advance

I have got an old tower in the spare bedroom that I was going to UKB Freecycle but you can have it if you want. I know for sure that it needs a power supply (I robbed it for another project) but I think that everything else is there or I have probably got enough parts laying about if they are not in the case.

Why not just use the mac?

I've an old Sun Ultra10 SPARC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPARCstation_10)
No reason why you can't use the G3 though (unless its too unwieldy).
I also have my brothers old Hewlett Packard computer. I've passed the HD onto a neighbour (when I set them up with GNU/Linux ) but its only sat around gathering dust. It appears to only have a CD-RW in there, but DVD-RW's can be had for~£15 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138750) (I've two of these in my desktop/server and they work perfectly). You'd need an HD too, many options, you could stick a huge HD in there and rip your DVD's so you don't have to carry them around or get a small cheap one just to install the OS on. RAM wise its only got 256Mb, and theres no dedicated graphics card, but this would work perfectly with some sort of Linux variant installed ;)
Let me know if you're interested, can supply pics.
I'd be tempted to take the G3 off your hands but would only incur the wrath of my wife as I'm supposed to be getting rid of some of the four PCs that I have under the desk (one used, the SPARC doesn't really boot yet and the other one's even older than the above).

i've got 3 or 4 knocking around the place, some assembly required i think though... depends if i ever get this frigging pentium off jim!

so you would rather lug a great big PC and monitor around over taking your laptop with you? considering your laptop isnt an alienware £7000 jobbie, why not take the laptop? takes up less room, uses less power - I cant see the disadvantage?

Got a fully working (not used for 2 years) pc with DVD drive. Can't remeber exact spec. 500ish MHz processor, 10 or 20 gig HD, 300ish meg of RAM? Plays DVDs fine. Free to a good van.

Thanks for the replies :)
The mac is huge and would take up a load of space in the van. I'm also a Mac tard and have been using PCs for years.
My laptop has all by business stuff on it and the wife's PGCE/teaching plans, and although I make backups having the laptop nicked would be a world of pain. It's also hard to set up a laptop in the van unless you have some sort of viewing table etc etc
The G3 is still up for grabs if anyone wants to collect from Sheffield

I've thrown away much better computers than a G3, much , much better

Not heard of the Euopean WEEE (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/waste/weee/index_en.htm) directive (and the UK WEEE (http://www.netregs.gov.uk/netregs/topics/WEEE/default.aspx))? Getting them recycled is far better than letting them sit in a landfill site.

yes, they recycle them at the local tip

Cool 8) I should probably get rid of some of mine there too as they're pretty old. If I had a decent spec I'd probably pass it on to one of these (http://www.wasteonline.org.uk/resources/InformationSheets/ComputerRecyclersRefurbishers.htm)

These guys recycle computers too

Pretty interesting project they've got going.
