Title: Cute puppy syndrome
Post by: lagerstarfish on November 09, 2008, 12:19:30 am
Well, since my wife is sick of listening to me gush on about it I thought I'd tell you lot.

A bloke I know through work has a gorgeous husky puppy bitch called Echo. I like dogs and have looked after some fine grown up four legged characters in my time (those of you who knew Friday and Sky will know what I mean). Meeting Echo was the first time I have had a Love-At-First-Sight feeling about a puppy.

I don't know if it is because I'm feeling particularly loved up at the moment with getting married and expecting another child (very excied about this), but this strong feeling has really caught me off guard. I even restructured my day on Friday (creating more work for Monday when I have less time) just so I could take Echo for a walk. I didn't even feel this strongly about Peter and Lilly, the two lovely kittens I brought up - and they were CUTE.

There is no way I have enough time to look after a dog like this over the next couple of years, but my heart is telling me that I want one. Lagers Jr would be delighted to have such a dog - another thought that fills me with warm fuzzy feelings.

How do I deal with my irrational desire to take resposibilty for a troublesome ball of fur and energy?

Know what you mean Lagers , if I had a more structured work pattern I'd have a dog too ..... Therefore I suggest you that give in to your irrational desires and  you get yourself one ..... You might have to get up a little earlier every morning , but all the other benefits easily outweigh this  bit of discomfort ......Mrs Lagers may not agree of course , the fairer sex do tend to witter on about hygiene etc ......But as it should be house-trained by the time the latest lagerette appears I can't see a problem there .... Bon chance ....

Echo is a bit lighter grey than that, but you get the idea.

I can really see why you'd want one of those ..... Go for it , has following your irrational fears ever finished in disaster before ? ....

You could just get one stuffed and keep it on the mantelpiece. Just as cute but far easier to look after.

We went to see some friends the other day who have new spaniel pup (black with a white head, and called Guiness). The dog was amazingly well behaved, and when I sat on the floor it climbed staright on my lap, snuggled in between my legs and fell fast asleep. So cute. We would love to get a pup too, probably a border terrier but it would be left to it's own devices all day in a fairly small garden. If it wasn't for that we would definitely get one. Or two.

FD, how are your two pups?

Is there a difference between a malamute and a husky? Or are they different names for the same breed?

Huskies are cool!

They are very intelligent, tend to become loyal to one select person and are highly energetic. Just be sure that you will be able to give it the stimulus and exercise it needs especially with a new baby on the way, or it may become a bit of a handful if it doesn't get its genetic requirements.

Dogs are great companions, love mine to bits an never regretted having him.

I think I'm going to make do with borrowing Echo a couple of times a week until this perceived need for a dog drops down a few places in my emotional hierarchy.
A bit of planning with my diary has revealed that I barely have time to finish my DIY schedule before Lagers Jr Mk 2 arrives.
I think a lot of my urge for a puppy is to with the fact that we had a very nice dog when my first child was born, so in my head new babies and cute dogs are linked.

Sense prevails, thank fuck! You'll barely have time to breathe anyway man. I read this thread with horror thinking that you'd finally lost the plot completely.

Huskies are fucking W.I.L.D.

Don't take that dog: it will destroy your home; they're inexhaustible; loud; unpredictably snappy.

You will rue the day . . .

our next door neighbour tripped over and fell onto his husky about a month ago which responded by biting out a huge chunk of his ass cheek. Perfectly nice dog apart from this one event. W.I.L.D.

I rest my case.

They're but a blink away from a Wolf.  Not a hound for a home w/ a young child.

We are in a similar boat, both me and Mrs Obi grew up with dogs, greatly want one now we have Mini-Obi but would struggle as our garden would be tricky to make dog proof. Still I think we will get one in the next couple of years and work something out.

This is Annie who I grew up with...

This was our official school photo! Thats how close we were to her. Old English/Black Lab cross. She had pups at the ripe old age of 13 and we kept two which only passed away a couple of years ago.

[check me and my bro's threads circa 1979! Genius.]

New parents and aspirant dog-owners take note:

Fiend - raised by Golden Retrievers from day 1.

It might explain a lot - you have been warned.

Like a poor man's version of Romulus and Remus you mean?

It might explain a lot...

Romulus and Remus founded Rome - Fiend founded a multinational burger chain a reputation for ranting on about trad ethics.

Must explain something about choice the of surrogate parents but what I don't know!  ;)
