Very excited to hear through Ukclimbing and Steve Dunning that:
The world’s biggest and most diverse bouldering centre is coming to North Leeds!
"The Climbing Depot" is opening January 2009
Open to the public and various groups
More information will be available on the upcoming website
-
:wall:  :boohoo: Bump - you know, it's that city up the white arrow where the blodderers wear white trousers and swear by 'eck. It's actually due west of Leeds too so should be easy for everyone to get to. Roll on January.
-
will PM with some goss.
-
really? good news for most of us but very bad for some!
-
aren't Leeds something you walk doggs with?
-
Leeds, not follows.
-
Hang on, where exactly is North Leeds? Will it be easier to get to than The Leeds Wall from the average LS6 student? Methinks we need more info on the location.
-
where exactly is North Leeds?
To the north of Leeds.
-
where exactly is North Leeds?
To the north of Leeds.
actually north leeds is not to north of leeds because then it would be adle or bramhope.
-
my apologies andi harewood/harrogate are to the north of leeds.adel/bramhope are to the north west of leeds.i should know really having been in the 30th north west leeds scout troop.
-
To me, north leeds means Sheepscar/Stab-eltown
-
where exactly is North Leeds?
To the north of Leeds.
Clever clogs. North Leeds is a big area and where the wall is situated will make a large difference to the car-less student.
-
do you mean Climb Newcastle? thats north of leeds and they let students in.
-
To me, north leeds means Sheepscar/Stab-eltown
yes that is north leeds not north of leeds which is where you claimed the depot to be.
-
Good point. ok then, north Leeds is to the north of Leeds city centre.
-
But where will the Depot be?!
And dont say North of Leeds
:wall:
-
South of the north pole.
I don't know where it'll be, I heard rumours that it was going to be in a warehouse in headingley, but there are no warehouses in headingley, and that was some time ago, when I'd also heard rumours that Steve hadn't found anywhere yet.
-
And nobody knows who's building it, and there hasn't been any planning applications for climbing walls - it's either the best kept secret ever, or bullshit! I know Steve spent a few sessions in the Works asking questions a while back, but wasn't forthcoming when I asked him where his wall was going to be.
-
No application for planning permission - if the building was already licensed for change of use or had a lease on it or something then it doesn't necessarily need planning permission for change of use.
-
An index of Leeds planning apps (http://planningapplications.leeds.gov.uk/publicaccess/tdc/DcApplication/application_searchform.aspx) may be of some/no use if you can be bothered to search through the search options to find what to search for...
-
my source informs me there's been nothing in the last 18 months.
-
Headingley trivia...there was a bus depot where the retirement flats are next to 'Woodies' on Otley road. I guess it was a tram depot before that.
I used to walk past it on the way to school.
I dont know anything about the wall sorry...
-
my source informs me there's been nothing in the last 18 months.
your source is rubbish - it is in there if you're as anal as me in looking
-
latest rumour suggests Moortown as the approximate venue for the wall.

Nice work - would be a bit of a mission to get to there in rush hour from Leeds after work.
-
12 minutes in train to New Pudsey, only a 5 minute walk from there
half a dozen buses go down Staningley Road
takes me 15 minutes to drive from town to home near there in rush hour, then you're right on the ring road to get anywhere in the western world.
-
Should be easy to get to after work, no worst than leedswall. Only traffic is getting through lights by Mike's Carpets in Armley, after that its dual carriageway all the way..
To throw a spanner in the works.. This establishment hasn't got planning permission yet according to the planning website.

A novel way to fund a bouldering wall?
-
Rumour has it the works skatepark have just had a big grant and are building a new bouldering wall to replace the rthym section in their. anyone know any more?
-
I work in Pudsey! hooray! However, knowing my luck I will get made redundant the day it opens.

me too (but not much)

i know quite a bit about it but probably not as much as one or more consultants from a climbing establishment in sheffield.

I'd be quite Meek about telling more.

I just posted this on UKC and within 10 minutes it was no longer there!!!!
"Re Pudsey
Buzzzzzz Buzzzzzz If you ring the number on the sign outside this boarded up building they will tell you the lease isn't finalised and that climbing is one of the possible uses it could be put to! Bzzzzzz zzzzzzzz snore."

So why post it here
-
Because I get the impression that a number of people think that the building in Pudsey is going to be a bouldering wall. A quick visit and a phone call found that not to be the case, at least not any time soon, certainly not January and maybe never. I thought this might be classed as North Leeds Gossip and of interest to some. It also seemed amazing to me that such an innocuous post be pulled by UKC. Which says a lot, but I'm not sure what, about them.
-
Have you heard about this place - City Bloc - opening mid Jan in LS10 somewhere. Don't know if there's any relation to the possible Pudsey site - planning permission expired on 23/12 for it.
www.citybloc.co.uk (http://www.citybloc.co.uk)
I heard rumour of Crown Point, but no confirmation anywhere.

Prices
Annual Membership £300
Get ahead of the game and be the first to join City Bloc.
Buy your annual membership online!
for that money there'd better be a discount at one of the local hostelries
-
jiminy cricket! is there going to be a student/termly rate or anything? if i recall correctly, that's £100 more than the Leeds Wall! :rtfm:
-
Climbing works annual membership is £300
The Edge annual membership is £300
The Foundry annual membership is £280
Awesome Walls annual membership is £360
Leeds Wall annual membership is £300 (http://www.theleedswall.co.uk/wall/membership.htm)
Works out at roughly £1 per day, although obviously few people will go every day, but take a conservative estimate of average entry being £5-6 and you only need to go to the wall you have membership at +60-70 times and your then saving money.
-
I'm only likely to WANT to go there for 6 months of the year and I ain't paying £300 for THAT!
-

My sentiments too, thats why I never buy annual membership to any wall, but no ones forcing you to.
They may in time offer various monthly options like other walls.
I was simply pointing out that its not that out of line with other walls pricing policies.

Hull Wall annual pass is £350....
Or £7.50 a visit (and £10 a year membership)
I have talked about this to the owner before (actually every year when asked for my £10!!)
Bah humbug...

I agree entirely. also keen to point out that in response to the imminent opening of Citybloc, Leeds Wall has now offered a bouldering only entry price of £4.50, although it's not very obviously pointed out to you as you hand over your cash (to be fair, the fact that the sign-in sheet now asks you to tick a box saying "bouldering" or "roped climbing" or "both" is a bit of a give-away).
-
thats a crafty idea....

Hallefuckinglujah.

No need for any more 'north Leeds gossip'.
Well done on the detective work. We have had a number a delays with one thing and another but we are now well into the build of The Depot.
The facts are..
Construction is underway
Around 1,300 square metres of climbing surface
Gym/conditioning room
Cafe
Climbing shop
Location- Richardshaw Lane, Leeds (near Pudsey just off the ring road) Opposite a good pub and an award winning Indian Restaurant and bar
Ample parking
Swanky changing rooms with showers etc...
The climbing will consist of a dedicated circuit area with hundreds of problems throughout the grades. The competition wall will have loads of graded problems for all abilities. In addition to this we are including a section which will provide extended 'route style' problems.
The Depot will also provide a dedicated training area with campus boards, fixed 50 degree, system board, olympic rings etc...
We are keen for folks to pop by and give us some input during construction.
If you are keen then drop me an email......
Cheers from the Depot team
-
Forgive me if I'm being an idiot but does that mean there are going to be two new bouldering walls in Leeds?
-
Affirmative, or three if you include the slight renovations (including putting a campus board back in) that are taking place at Leeds wall...
-

Hang on, I must be a bit slow - forgive me, so does this mean that there is going to be:
1. Leeds wall (& bouldering area)
2. Citybloc place (not open yet.. location?)
3. The Depot (now being built in Pudsey)
(and of course the university wall..)
-
That's correct (don't forget Henry Price though!)
-
All this in Leeds and still nowt in Bradford :'(
-
All this in Leeds and still nowt in Bradford :'(
Especially with Leeds, and Pudsey in particular, being so far away from Bradford...
-
still nowt in Bradford :'(
Was there ever anything? At all?
-
All this in Leeds and still nowt in Bradford :'(
:boohoo:
and theres such a shortage of places to climb outside around Bradford too ;)
-
Thats no good when its pissing it down, and fair enough leeds isn't miles off but 3 walls in Leeds none in Bradford just seems wrong.
-

You've found an opening in the market then! Get to work :spank:

Forgive my previous sarcy post, but I live in Hull, so on those nice summer eves when you can just bob out to Shipley or wherever, think of me pelting it along the m62 for an hour and a bit to get to Godscliff.. We have a wall in Hull, and whilst its OK, it doesnt stop me travelling to the Works fairly regularly and probably soon these new Leeds Walls...
Personally, I'm not sure its healthy having 3 bouldering venues in Leeds (sorry 4 - forgot the Henry price :) ) as surely theres not enough market share for all of them? - and could this also lead to things getting a bit cliquey? (sp?)...
Like slackers says, if theres the market - get one built! but I recon there are other cities where there could be more demand\bigger catchment... any ideas??
-
Hi Thustler,
Although Pudsey is classed as Leeds, it's actually closer to Bradford city centre (4.5 miles to BD1) than it is Leeds city centre (5.6 miles). The location of the Depot having fast access from Bradford, North and West Leeds, M62 etc is one of the key reasons why we picked that location, it's about 100 meters from the Stanningley bypass.
Cheers Oliver
-
:) Thats good to know will it be easy enuff to get to by public transport?
-
:) Thats good to know will it be easy enuff to get to by public transport?
You can either get the train direct from Bradford to New Pudsey, which takes 8 mins and then it's just over half a mile walk from the station or catch the number 72 bus which takes 19 mins and then it's about a 200 meter walk, either way it's easy. Direct trains from Leeds in 11 mins as well.
We are also planning to have a bike rack within the building, if you fancy cycling in.
Cheers Oliver
-
will there be spoonfeeding available :)
Seems like every city I live in gets a bouldering facility after I leave. This one and the Bristol one would have been right on my commute. Maybe Aberdeen is next?
-
Lol excuse the silly questions I'm a student.
-
Man alive people don't know they're fucking born nowadays do they!? When I were a lad the nearest wall of any description was 120 mile round trip into Central London. And it was fucking shit. Didn't stop me from getting strong. Jesus.
;)
-
not to mention sitting on the bus for 50 mins to get to manchester then getting the train to grindleford only to get off and walk to stoney for a couple of hours climbing. didn't stop me from getting, oh shit!
my heart bleeds for people these days, they put up with so much
-
Lol excuse the silly questions I'm a student.
Indeed. Glad that tertiary education isn't going to waste. They let anyone in these days :)

are you sure about that.i have actually been an interviewer for hull uni nursing courses and you can't ask such things as can you breath unaided or can you tie your own shoe laces.

OK, I might be wrong, we might let them in if they can breathe OR have a pulse and the necessary tuition fees ;)
We must then ensure not to declare them dead until the 15th Dec, but which time they cannot claim back any of their fees... :)

We dropped in to have a look at Citybloc yesterday and it's not three bad. Obviously not as large as the Works but it has a variety of wall angles and the problems were well set, not all obvious sequences or jug pulling. The holds were obviously brand new which made the friction nice. No card machine so it was cash only, no brushes or detailed topos. Little in the way of staff presence that I noticed either. A good start IMO but it needs some attention to the detail or it could quickly become just another bouldering wall.

Steve dunning was my teacher for science when i was at school and he was a awesome climber as well i know this wall i going to be good i am going to go all the time. i wish them luck with it.
-
Went to citibloc last night and thought it was pretty good.
DIdnt get the chance to chat to the guys running the place when leaving as had to dash - so some general points/feedback...
+'s
Like the grading structure - 20 odd problems in 5 grade bands.
Problems were great for me, blue were just at my 50/50 flashable limit, so I got loads of mileage instead of flapping on one or two things I couldnt really do for ages.
Really varied problems too - jug pulls to balancy things moving from jugs to crimps to slopers (alot of walls seem to have jugs or crimps etc..). Some problems were also really long - 6-7 or more moves often diagonal rising traverses :)
Cafe upstairs was good and reasonably priced
People running the place were great
Dead easy to get to 1 min of the M621 - loads of room for parking
-ves
Could be a wee bit small or not have enough problems (at the moment). If I were to go twice or more a week, I recon after three weeks or so I'd run out of things to do/could do. Though you could say that for every wall. If they change the routes regularly (every month or so) it'd work fine
Not enough beastly overhangs. e.g. skips at the works are a bit daft but great fun..
Toilets were grim. Think Trainspotting....
For a couple of people with us, there was not enough difficulty in the easy grades (if that makes sense). e.g. they could do all the pinks (piss easy) and all the reds (easy) but none of the blues. THey suggested more stretching of grades within the easy band. THats one thing the works and the stockport wall (in particular) does well - some of the easy problems are easy, but really make you think...

Thanks for the feedback.
We had a few comments about the difference between the reds and blues so we altered some of the existing blues and added a few more.
On the toilet front we should be opening our own within the next week or so.
If you have any further feedback feel free to speak with myself or Ben next time your in.
Cheers
Martin

Glad to give feedback and thanks for listening. I would have spoken to you guys on the way out, but it was late and we had to head off.. keep up the great work, and I look forward to coming again soon!

PS - that cafe space at the top would be great for talks/lectures etc.. warm, plenty of brews etc... T
