Just a quick one..
the skin on my fingers seems to be the first to go everytime we are out im always the first to go through a tip (or 5).. and seems to take forever to heal up.. i use "climb on" on a daily basis. Is there anything else i can do to make the skin harder or stronger on the fingers? :wall:

Antihydral seems to be the weapon of choice. Don't overuse it though or else the skin will dry out and split.

Hi Robl,
I recently re-found garlic which is working wonders for my delicate peau. Simply cook lots of Italian food over the festive season (which began two months ago in Manchester) and you'll be laughing in the new year.
Best bet though is a fine grained sandpaper. Learnt this one off a Stick It when Moon starts beavering away at his fingers. I've not had a flapper since (1 year). It does thin your skin (which grows back much quicker than a healing wound) but I'm sure it's better than reopening wounds, catching skin on bog roll etc . .

need slightly more info to give an opinion robi. what do you climb on and how often? climb on every day seems a bit much, unless you're training every day.

I climb 3 times a week generally, 2 4hr indoor sessions, 1 session on the bouldering, 1 session lead climbing, Then usally a outdoor day on the boulders / trad or sport on the wkend. :)

For the first few years boulderign on grit I never went home without a split tip or a flapper (or five). I always thought In had weak skin. I tried all the ointments and magic solutions at the time. I would often spend 2 weeks regrowing skin, only to reopen old wounds.
Now I know the reason was that I was endlessly slapping to rounded slopers and pulling on pebbles like a boy possessed. Also I would not know when it was time to quit and go home.
I have not had a flapper or a propper split tip for for years and have still progressed from V6 to V9. I also don`t do washing up without gloves, have baths unless my hands are out of the water, swim (often) and use a cheap hand hand and nail (strengthener) moisturiser from tescos every evening and immediately after climbing (Tescos 79p)
I once read that we all only have 7 layers of skin (excluding useless calluses)- some people may have harder skin than others.
Obviously bouldering regularly helps too.

Might be a good excuse to give the washing up a miss.. "sorry luv, going climbin... can't do the washing up.. makes ma skin go all mushy lol" :thumbsup:
Im guessing its just a case of looking after fingers when they start to go a bit thin... i guess i was hoping to find a miracle cure when really there aint one!

anyone know the score with using sand paper to smooth edges etc.. Any particular courseness/brand etc?

A fine grained paper will suffice. The foam sanding blocks (£1 from any hardware store) are neat as one can wash them when they accrue too much finger-smeg.

I prefer a medium coarse glass paper, rolled into a pencil width or folded for work in the crease, or used flat for general tippage.

Think i read somewhere that someone (maybe ben moon) would do this on his skin to promote regrowth even when there are no obvious rough edges which need reducing. Is this true? If so im off to b&poo.

Elizibeth Arden 8 hour repair cream. Its amazing! Once rubbed in and dried your skin feels instantly thicker. Not cheap mind, at twice the cost of Climb on.
Just managed 8 days climbing out of 10 in Switzerland recently. (First time using it)
