Title: Albums of the Decade
Post by: SA Chris on December 10, 2009, 11:56:22 am

Go on bare your soul - what's your top 10? or 20? (any more is taking the piss)

I am still deciding.

Oh ha ha ha. It's format that non-geeks and children who download singles listen to music in.

Just five from me and in no particular order:

Continental - Robin Guthrie. I'm an unadulterated fan of Guthrie's work and this is the best of a pretty good bunch he's brought out in the last 4 or 5 years. In another year or two I may place his current album Carousel above this one.

The Flying Club Cup - Beirut. The second album from an idiosyncratic young folk/world music influenced multi-intrumentalist from New Mexico builds on the promise of his debut.

Goodbye - Ulrich Schnauss. Beautiful soundscapes from one of the best at the more ambient end of the music spectrum.

High - The Blue Nile. Maybe not quite up with their first two albums back in the 80s but a major recovery from the disappontment of 1996's Peace at Last.

Mirrorball - John Foxx & Robin Guthrie. Thirty years ago I was a fan of the original Ultravox then for many years I've been a fan of the Cocteau Twins so i wasn't surprised to find I liked this one!

Generally, I have found this to be a bland decade lacking in originality or real creativity as far as "popular" music is concerned. I do realise that this is at least partly due to ageing and the resulting ossification of the brain!

7. Public Domain - Hard Hop Superstars

I know, I know  :-[

Off the top of my head.........

Either Funeral or Neon Bible by Arcade Fire. Both are amazing. Probably the best live band I've seen in that time too.

Thunder, Lightning, Strike by The Go! Team.

Music in Mouth by Bell X1.

Chase This Light by Jimmy Eat World.

A Grand Don't Come For Free by The Streets.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by Flaming Lips.

I'll think of more.

Most overrated load of dogshit, anything by Franz Ferdinand or The White Stripes.  :)

Can't believe The Times have Kid A at #1 and yet there is no mention of the far superior Shirehorses album Our Kid Eh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Kid_Eh).

A lot more entertaining than Chris Moyle's "hilarious" parody album (I suspect, having not listened to it).

I presume so as "Tony" is probably the best parody song ever made.

I tend to like albums with drums in. Quite partial to ones with bass as well. Can't think of any of the top of my head though.

wasn't endtroducing mid 90s?

any list needs the Bon Iver album in it.

I thought that, but Amazon says there was a version released in 2001, might have been a re-issue though.

If you want Bon Iver in a list you know what to do.....

a bland decade lacking in originality or real creativity as far as "popular" music is concerned.

Maybe, but the revival/ rehash of the folk and 80's electro genres has been great, particularly when the two have overlapped.

Damien Rice - O
Hot Chip - The Warning
Ian Brown - Music of the Spheres
Chris Thile - How to grow a woman from the ground
Explosions in the sky - The Earth is not a cold dead place
Jack Rose - Kensington Blues
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Godspeed you black emperor! - Lift yr. skinny fists like antennas to heaven!
The Postal Service - Give Up
Richard Hawley - Lowedges

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Wilco - A Ghost is Born (am trying to resist also including Kicking Television, Sky Blue Shy and Wilco (the album)
Either/both of the Dinosaur Jr comebacks - probably Farm on balance
Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are

Would also include Bon Iver, Burial and may be Grizzly Bear. Not sure of the balance.

The Watersons - Mighty river of song

Poptastic album of the decade:
Girls Aloud - Tangled Up

I'm sure I've missed some  :-\  Looking back, it was a better decade for music than I thought.

Would probably have voted Ocean Songs but its too early.

More contenders:

Gillian Welch - Time (the revelator)
Teitur - The Singer
Neil Young - Sugar Mountain: Liver at Canterbury House (OK, recorded in the 60s but only recently released for first time and unmissable for Out of My Mind and Clancy Can't Sing alone)
British Sea Power - Man of Aran
Bonnie Prince Billy - Is it the Sea?

Lots of suggestions to follow up from others' list.

What a great sentence, followed by a moment of madness. Damien Rice? I assume you're sleeping on a plastic sheet? Classic indie landfill.

Apart from that some good choices.

Add that one to my list as well - one of the best releases on Constellation.

Stubbs - anything by Godspeed You Black Emperor is a joy to own - would struggle to pick one album out of the their releases to recommend though my personal favourite has to be F# A# (Infinity) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Infinity-Godspeed-You-Black-Emperor/dp/B000007T2Z/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1260777900&sr=8-3) just for Dead Flag Blues which features a spoken word voice over by Lee Marvin!!  :o

D Bridge - The Gemini Principle
Architects - Hollow Crown
Quantic - The Fifth Exotic

Ryan Adams – Heartbreaker or Gold
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Lambchop – Nixon
Sufjan Stevens – Illinois
Richmond Fontaine – Post to Wire
Nick Cave – No More Shall We Part
Drive by Truckers – The Dirty South
Grandaddy – Sophtware Slump
Jim O’Rourke – Insignificance
At the Drive in – Relationship of Command
Bonnie Prince Billy – Ease on Down the Road
LCD Sound System – Sound of Silver
Chris Wood - Trespasser
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes

Somebody mentioned Toxicity by System of a Down - I dug this out again from the cupboard last night and was blown away by how powerful and intense it is. A definite contender!

Lots of stuff that I've yet to check out or return to from the lists you've all given (e.g. I haven't listened to Jimmy Eat World for years) - there's no such thing as too much music!
Title: Re: Albums of the Decade
Post by: JonI on December 15, 2009, 05:04:58 pm
a few off the top of my head...

Dizzee Rascal - Boy in Da Corner (this blew my mind at the time... shame about his more recent stuff)
Vincent Gallo - When
PJ Harvey - White Chalk
Venetian Snares - Find Candace
J Dilla - Donuts

There have been some great compilations and re-issues too, something which seems to have been an increasing trend this decade, especially in folk/blues and world music.  I've discovered a lot of music this way in the past few years, although it does make you feel like a bit of a consumer!

London is the Place for Me: Trinidadian Calypso in London
American Primitive 1 + 2
Anything by Smithsonian Folkways
Guinee - African Pearls Vol.2
Sun Ra - Nuclear War

I got one of the originals of these that came packaged up like a tablet, the CD was even in a plastic "popper" packet.  Only got the single CD version though, but would have loved to get the 12 CD version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladies_and_Gentlemen_We_Are_Floating_in_Space#Special_editions).

Must dig out some Spiritualized, cheers for the reminder.

Yeah, just checked and they've also re-issued the 12 x 3" CD's, but only 1000 and I can't be arsed getting the extra tracks (do I really need an acappella version of Ladies and Gentlemen, no).

The Decline of British Sea Power - British Sea Power (plenty of personality)

Man of Aran - British Sea Power (Let it wash over you and think of deep, briny waters and towering cliffs rising out of them)

The Prodigal Son - Martin Simpson (Excellently assembled. All the big songs in it are beautiful)

Permission to Land - The Darkness (Power chords, tight cat suits, flamboyance and staggering gigs. What's not to love?)

Roll With You - Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves (The Satisfier!)

The Libertines - The Libertines (Cooooool)

A Certain Trigger - Maximo Park (Didn't think I would enjoy it but I was nicely surprised)

Just Enough Education to Perform - The Stereophonics (First band I saw live. It didn't disappoint)

The Bramble Briar - Martin Simpson (More delectable fretwork)

Of these the second, fourth, sixth and eighth are my favourites and the ones you should go and spend your money on then report back to me telling me what you thought.

That Maximo Park album is great but Just Enough Education.... is an interesting choice as I reckon it's the worst album The Stereophonics have done (and I think they're ok).

Agree. Not their best, but probably their best this decade.

And the obsession with the Darkness is unhealthy.

Otherwise good stuff.

Ernie Payne - Coercion Street
Sigur Ros - Takk

Are two that spring to mind that haven't been mentioned thus far.

Agree re: JEEP not being a highlight for the Stereophonics let alone the decade and putting the Darkness in a top ten of the decade is dangerously close to a puntering offence.

Agree. Not their best, but probably their best this decade.

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language._Sex._Violence._Other%3F) is a much better album than JEEP. I should point out that the reason I'm an expert is that the Mrs is a fan (but even she admits that Mr Writer is a shockingly bad tune).

I prefer Just Enough.... to LSVO. Neither's a patch on Word Gets Around though and doesn't deserve to be mentioned as AotD.

Agree with Dave that artic monkeys is in.  Libertines also a great album.

Good call on Battles - I'd forgotten about that (how could i given how brilliant it was)

The Plant/Krauss album was excellent too

and there are about 4 or 5 tracks on Fever to Tell that I think are fantastic, but didn't really get the whole thing...

Strictly speak, 1979 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merzbow), but close enough.

So far I think there is exactly zero overlap between the albums on this thread and my choices  :)

That's 'cos you've got really quite narrow taste in music :kiss1: and why you think noise started with Merzbow  ;)

I was just teasing, and lending support to his rebuttal of Schloper...

I have pretty broad taste in music BUT it's mostly in the relatively extreme spectra and doesn't really stray into normal stuff. I should really do a top ten too.

I haven't taken the time to ponder this one with due care and attention yet - and the past several months have seen my ears burn to the sound of whatever funk I could get out of the headphones.

However, I found this one rolling about in the automobile earlier today and it definitely makes it into my top ten:

Venetian Snares - 'Rossz csillag alatt született'

I've been trying to come up with something review like to say about this - essentially it's rather brooding orchestral samples - twisted around jungle breakbeats and formed into something quite astounding. Almost beyond description, so I'd suggest giving it a solid rinse.

Rinsed. it is good that.

Anyway, my recommendation:

Helios - Eingya

After hearing a remix by Stray (http://soundcloud.com/straydnb/helios-first-dream-called-ocean-stray-remix) of one fo the tunes on this album, I decided to buy it. It has a beautiful cover- a good start. Pop it in the CD player, sit back and let the audial tide wash over your toes dipping in the sea of atmospheric, ambient, pure and natural, earthy sounding electronica. I recommend this. Get it, got it? Good.

Had trouble just thinking of ten original albums from the decade that I like, spent most of the time on older stuff.

Anyway in no particular order, some of these I probably wouldn't rant about but still;

Discovery -Daft Punk

Funeral - Arcade Fire

Whatever.. - Arctic Monkeys

The Blueprint - Jay-Z

In Rainbows - Radiohead

Songs For The Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age

Give Up - The Postal Service

Drukqs - Aphex Twin

Madvillany - Doom

Mr Beast - Mogwai

All of their covers are similar IIRC - not sure if I have got that particular one but I certainly have at least one album and probably two by them at home - must dig it out and listen to it again.

I have a few suggestions,

Dukes of Nothing by Dukes of Nothing, a crystallised version of Motorhead, took them 17 minutes to achieve what Lemmy took thirty years to do.

Rancid-Rancid

Struggle to think of anything else, I think I'm lost in a 90's stoner-sludgecore world, without the beer and weed

Likewise - went back to the cliff again yesterday and tried a few more things - no wind and a bit of moisture in the air so less than perfect though definitely warmer!

I tend to be rather vague when it comes to record labels a lot of the time and just as much in general usually - it's part of my inimitable charm allegedly...  ;)
