Title: GPS for laptop
Post by: account_inactive on February 24, 2008, 06:27:43 pm
After following Dobbin over the weekend trying to find a crag I've decided to invest in a GPS receiver.  My mobile won't run the tomtom software so I'm looking to add something to my EEE PC.

It doesn't have bluetooth so I'm looking at either a USB version or compact flash (PC has a card reader). Does anyone have any opinions on what is a better system?

Thanks in advance

what mobile do you have?

You can hardwire a gps reciever into your laptop, I saw a guide somewhere on t'interweb

A Sony w810i

I think wayfinder(?) works on it

I've read the hardwiring thing but it involves soldering which I'm shit at.  My cats attacked the wires on my modded xbox and I fucked up the new solder!

Are the cards/usb wank then?

I would strongly recomend using a phone as a sat nav device rather than a laptop. Either get wayfinder or get a phone that supports tomtom or route 66 etc...

I use this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SOLAR-Bluetooth-GPS-Receiver-for-TOMTOM-Nokia-Sony-Er_W0QQitemZ310024825610QQihZ021QQcategoryZ156955QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SOLAR-Bluetooth-GPS-Receiver-for-TOMTOM-Nokia-Sony-Er_W0QQitemZ310024825610QQihZ021QQcategoryZ156955QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
with a 02 pda phone. It's Bluetooth but it also has a USB socket and come with drivers for PC.
