Title: It's just the same old show...on my radio
Post by: fried on November 02, 2017, 06:08:08 pm
I've been getting seriously back into music after a couple of year break. Discovering lots of new stuff again and mostly this is down to BBC radio 6. Listened to lots of Marc Riley, lots of Iggy, but kind of need a change.

There must be loads of intelligent, diverse, internet radio stations, playing a mixture of the odd hit, loads of new alternative stuff, bit of jazz, bit of electro, loads of curve balls to lead to me to some where new. Julian Cope as DJ would be perfect...for a bit.

Any good suggestions? I'm updating my hifi system so descent res stations would be good.

I've been getting a lot of use out of spotify lately. Might just be me, but their recommendations seem pretty decent most of the time. In particular:

There's an automatic playlist they create for you called 'discover weekly', all new stuff based on previous listening history. Works really well imo.

'Daily mix' playlist. Similar to above, but a mixture of stuff in your library and some new stuff.

Artist radio stations. Basically plays lots of stuff like the artist of choice.

'make similar playlist' option. You can right click any existing playlist and it'll try and produce a playlist in a similar style but with new songs/artists. Works pretty well.

I just upgraded to Spotify premium after years as a freeloader. It's the best 10 quid a month I've ever spend. Love the playlists.

Still miss having a decent DJ to tell me about the stuff.

I’m a big fan of Worldwide FM, fairly narrow range of musical styles but if you like that sort of thing you’ll probably like it all. Set up by Gilles Peterson.

Might be O.K for a bit on a Saturday evening with friends, but a bit too narrow and 'dance' orientated for me, although I have no problem with any of the tracks individually.

The Quietus Hour (http://radio.thequietus.com) podcasts are well worth a go. Pretty eclectic and I usually end up with a decent list of new stuff to look into after listening.

Yes. Very Good, especially for Africans, and more jazz based stuff. Again it's a little narrow in style. Good for my French though

Soho Radio might be worth a look - lots of diversity and they've got a web player too.

There's Last FM too, but i think it's just an extension of Spotify.

NTS radio is pretty good, though shows tend to focus on a particular style they do mix it up a bit. Right now there's some decent jungle playing which i know you are quite into

Resonance FM https://resonancefm.com from London has lots of interesting shows.  WFMU https://wfmu.org from New Jersey is really varied and fun - it's their 50th birthday tomorrow.

I hate jungle! I'll check out the stuff on NTS, looks O.K but I'd love to find someone who's mixing styles a bit more.

I hate jungle!

Had to do a double take at that, and then after some squinting at the username i just noticed you are not Fiend but Fried.  :slap:

Sorry for the mixed ID's. I blame the theme's tiny fonts and dark background   :worms:
