Everything on the media seems to be mentioning twitter and tweeting (the act of twittering?) at the moment - and somehow I seem to have completely missed out on what its all about.
I get the gist its some kind of micro blogging thingy, but whats the rub? whys it so good? what makes it such a success?
Is it any good or a load of old sherman? I notice people here have twitter icons.. do you use it? is it worth bothering with or should I just keep my head happily in the sand?

Do you have Facebook? Twitter is essentially like the status updates on Facebook. You make short posts / updates about what you are doing or how you are feeling or any general shit that you want and then people can comment on them, you in turn can then answer the comments should you choose or comment on other people's updates.
There's a UKB Twitter page for condition reports which is pretty useful if you're local to the other people updating, there's a thread somewhere but I can't find it at the moment.
Other than that, like all social networking things, it's really just a way for people to talk about what they are doing and generally be nosy about other people, if they so choose. A lot of celebrity types have Twitter pages which are apparently quite good to follow, but I've never really been able to get into it myself.
You're not missing out on much I don't think, Facebook has far better nosiness and stalking potential ;)

Thanks Maggie - that sounds like a great summary... I think I'll not worry about the twittering for now.. though the crag update gubbins sounds useful.. the whole what i'm doing now bit about facebook can be one of the most interesting bits (what others are doing - the stalking part!) and one of the most tedious (putting what I'm doing..).. T
-
I think you can probably see the UKB page anyway, without being a member, or it only takes 5 minutes to join up and you never have to post updates, you can just follow / watch other people.
-
I'm a big fan of Twitter - I much prefer it to facebook and all it's annoying "applications".
It's more micro-blogging than social networking really. The 140 character limit keeps things short and sweet.
It's actually really useful for finding quality, personalised information on many a topic - news, reviews, etc.
-
Its also very handy for blogging on the move as you can send messages via text (albeit at a cost (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,11134.msg191291.html#msg191291)), or if you have a smartphone with net usage in your deal there are apps such as Twibble (http://www.twibble.de/) which you can post and read things from. This is the beauty of the @ukbouldering group as people can post details of crag conditions from their mobile when they arrive, you can either check conditions before you leave, or if you've Twibble or just a normal browser on your phone you can check them en route (providing your not actually driving ;))
-
Maybe I'm just following the wrong people ;)

Some personal Twitter recommendations:
If you want it's easy to get Twitter to update Facebook and Facebook to update Twitter. I don't do this as I think it's confusing having the same updates on both sites.
- Twitter Google search (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/43451) :: This handy Greasemonkey script puts Twitter search results on top of the normal Google results when you use Google search. It defaults to 5 results but this is easy to change to any number you like in the script
- TweetDeck (http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/) :: This Adobe Air desktop application is really useful for Tweeting and if you follow lots of people coz you can group people into different columns to prevent confusion. The latest beta version can also update Facebook if required too.
- Twitterfeed (http://twitterfeed.com/) :: Feed your blog updates to Twitter
- TwitScoop (http://www.twitscoop.com/) :: See what's hot on Twitter in real time - picks up big news before the news sites get it.
I'd also like to boast that I'm being followed by Jeff Mills but I suspect he was just being polite and following me back rather than thinking he can learn much from an old pasty brit who likes a bit of techno
-
Jeff Mills is on Twitter?! 8)
I am going to add him later and see if he is as keen to follow me as he is you, Bubba, then we'll know if it's politeness or he really does want to know what you had for dinner last night ;)
Mostly I am being followed by people trying to sell me things, who add themselves faster than I can delete them
How do you make Twitter update in line with Facebook, is it complicated? By complicated I mean, could I do it or is there technical wizardry involved?
-
Twitbin (http://www.twitbin.com/) is a handy Firefox add-on that at the click of a button reveals a side-bar with your twitter page on it (less intrusive than a new tab to view).
-
Regards the making it do your crackbook - I did this, I think it was in Twitter help (was v.easy).
-
Loads of Techno bods on Twitter - it's really good for music related stuff.
I've had a few people trying to sell things but I just block them fast.
In Facebook, just put "Twitter" into the search box and it'll take you to the application you need.
I think it's better to keep them seperate though really - Facebook updates are often too long for Twitter and Twitter updates often don't make sense in Facebook, especially if you're doing ReTweets or replying to people.
I prefer TweetDeck - that way it's easy to update either (or both) Twitter & Facbook from the same place.

Agreed - this is my favourite in browser extenstion. PowerTwitter would be good but it really slows down FF so avoid at the moment.

Even I can do that much

I would only do Facebook onto Twitter, cause really, I think all my Twitter followers need to know mundane details of my life as much as my Facebook folk do, nobody talks to me on Twitter so the updates going the other way shouldn't really be a problem :'(
-
I don't use Facebook - their approach to privacy and data management frightens me.
Twitter on the other hand I'm finding really useful for work and pleasure.
-
OK, I decided to give it a whirl (to be honest its been a frustrating day at work and I need something to take my mind off it..).
So now I'm all twittered up.. what happens - is this like a facebook thing? I have to find people to twitter and wait for others to tweet me etc...?
-
You need to find people / things yourself :)
There's no groups or stupid applications or annoying "causes" though - phew!
-

Cool, an excellent divergent activity!
-
I added Jeff Mills. He isnt following me. I can only imagine this is because he heard both of our DJing at the Thermal parties and determined you were worth keeping in touch with and I wasnt. And because your twitter name is all cool and dark sounding whilst mine sounds like a flea bitten nag on its way to the glue factory.
-
He did take a while to follow me back. He's busy being creative no doubt. Underground Resistance and Orlando Voorn are also following me, but again this isn't down to my innovative and prolific techno output.
-
Bubba why do you have such a gruesome Twitter name?? It actually scares me a bit when I'm trying to relax and read about Dobbin forgetting to buy carrots...
-
I've no idea really - i'd quite like to change it.
It was made up on the spur of the moment - I just get bored of using my name or "bubba" or "borque" or variations thereof and it was the first thing that sprang to mind.
I should probably set up a new funky name and tell everyone to update their follows but that's a lot of hassle and at least it makes people think for a second I guess...or something.
-
Watch out Dobbin (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/04/09/esure_twitter/) (and all other heavy tweeters who drive) :P
-
For example, one driver updated their Twitter page to say: “Driving with my knees and peeling an orange... Probably not the safest thing to be doing."
If you're involved in an accident you'd get shafted so hard for that

Guessing its not Spam - as I'm the only one being followed!
-
Better than some bloke a called Bob who started following me. Blocked him. Then an apparently cute looking lass started following. Let her stick around but now she's gone.
-
I don't mind random followers if they're a) not commercial and b) have something interesting to say on their feed.
If it's just people trying to gather followers for no apparant reason, e.g. they have virtually nothing on their feed then I can't be bothered with them.
-
My God. Just reading the Twittering of some right wing Americans with regard to Obama's historic Cairo speech. The views that some of the seemingly educated and otherwise intelligent people hold about Bush (hero) and Obama (selling America's soul) are truly terrifying. Twitter is great for little snapshots of people's views on things but fuck me, be careful what you look at.

Hi Tom, like you we/I ignored twitter, I suppose
1. not least because our phones are not internet-enabled :-\ :-\
2. because it didn't seem as good as more wordy tools we use from the PC for accessing & sharing good info
However, I was suggested to us we joined to publicise the +Ryanair +Sardinia debacle (if you search +Ryanair +Sardinia on twitter you see what we mean), and we have. This will be a good test of its usefulness.
cheers, hope you are getting some climbing done despite the weather in the UK

-
Yes, its "holding" (although technically its on their domain "twitter.com" anyway).
I'm not so sure trending music will be a bad thing, providing its based on who you are following and not done in a generic manner.

It's quite interesting seeing peoples real personalities appear through Twitter. There's a chap who writes a guardian column about Science and has had a couple of major hits with books about bad science and bad pharmaceuticals who I used to think had an interesting view on the matters but on Twitter he came across as a smug blinkered self satisfied narcissistic individual, like many celebrities. Just shows how much self censorship goes into writing for the press, TV and radio and the value of good editors. Also, who gives a shit what comedians have to say?
-
Ben Goldacre?
-
The opposite of myself... A nice guy on twitter ;) but a smug arrogant tool in my publications ;)
-
Also, who gives a shit what comedians have to say?
No one, but its appalling when they enlist their followers to bully others who have criticised or disagreed with them and just as bad if not worse than the trolling Richard Bacon investigated in The Anti-Social Network (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01dwg1n).

Just to drag this thread out of mothballs.
I’ve been trying for three days now, to deactivate my Twitter account.
It won’t let me. I just keep getting an “Error. Oops, something went wrong. Try again later” message.
I wonder why? And how many other “users” are also trying not to be?
Haven’t used Twitter in a couple of years now. 🤷♂️
-
For me Twitter’s still a brilliant place to get valuable info straight from the fingertips of people directly involved in whatever it might be you’re interested in. Don’t know why anyone would leave it, other than as a flounce. I’d leave meta, insta and in fact UKB long before I’d consider leaving twitter.
-
Dare I say twitter is a right wing circlejerk at this point? :-\
-
Nah not a “political “ move, I’d deleted the app months ago, because I never used it. Then I got an email that reminded me I had an account and I thought I’d shut it down. I like Insta, because I enjoy seeing photos and art. Hardly use FB and really thinking of ditching Linkedin. Generally suffering from social media fatigue.
It just strikes me as funny that I can’t deactivate the account, under the current, ah, climate…

Dare I say twitter is a right wing circlejerk at this point? :-\
I find I can read the thoughts of people from the whole political spectrum on twitter, from just about every profession out there, and across all views on the issues of climate, gender and economics. So I don’t recognise this caricature. Maybe I’m not bitter enough.

Yeah it's a fucking dump imo, with some notable exceptions

For me Twitter’s still a brilliant place to get valuable info straight from the fingertips of people directly involved in whatever it might be you’re interested in. Don’t know why anyone would leave it, other than as a flounce. I’d leave meta, insta and in fact UKB long before I’d consider leaving twitter.
I'd agree with this - my politics are left of centre, vocal sometimes and I happily buy and support anarchist literature.
If people genuinely think it's predominantly right wingers on there whooping and a hollering in MAGA hats, then I can only think they are looking for confirmation bias.

Not sure why but it’s where most game devs hang out. Therefore I use it for professional networking & showcasing stuff i’m working on. Whether this remains the case now theres ‘other twitter’ who knows.. its definitely been rocky recently. I will say though that its possible to use the platform without seeing or getting involved in right wing political nonsense

For me that's what it was with it being specifically fantastic at breaking news across the globe. The For You timeline and changes to verification have made it a lot harder to discern credible sources IMO and I do seem to get "served up" enraging crap by the current algorithms.

They finally deactivated my account today.
🤷🏻♂️
Not hugely impressed with Threads.
There are plenty of news sources available and I rarely have much time for more than a skim through anyway.

I find Twitter to be a pretty mellow place. I mainly follow other researchers in my field and it's mainly a professional outlet for research announcements etc. It's also pretty handy for paper calls, jobs etc. I do find it a bit odd when I see people I respect getting into quite petty online arguments, but I feel able to ignore that. I'm not sure if other available platforms suitably replace this either

Twitter is a lot more acceptable if you make sure to never ever click on the tab "for you" with algorithmic driven content, and only use the "following" tab.
Threads seems like an instagram for text. Great if you want to be fed celebrity text to go with celebrity images.
I find mastodon ok now. Not enough chess content (twitter is great for this) and no climbing content (twitter is not good for this and instagram is absolutely unbearable garbage, I don't understand how anyone can stand following famous/influencer climbers on instagram).
I am very sceptical about using social media to filter general news: human editors seem to be vastly superior to algos at separating the wheat from the chaff

Ted Kingsnorth is worth a follow on insta. There’s a few “regular but good” climbers on there who aren’t “influencers”.
