I'd just looked at Shooting The Shit homepage and approx 75% of the threads on page 1 are Sloper's politics trolling.
Any chance of a separate sub-forum for "Politics" so the noise doesn't detract from the rest of the content that others may actually want to read?
-
How about calling it "they're all c*nts"?

:goodidea: Some sort of way to limit which subforums threads can appear in your "recently unread topics" list would be an ideal companion to this.

That might be possible with this add-on (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1193) but its for the forum software and not anything you or I can do.

There is one already. It's called the logpile. All his political swill should go straight there, it's fucking tedious.
Not a new issue

I concur, I think it was initially suggested when the Blog Pile went live.

Perhaps there should be a vote about where to put this stuf: 'logpile' or a 'politics' subforum - first past the post wins...
-
On my forum view there's about three threads that I've started.
So not quite 75%

But we type in a dictatorship (of sorts).
An official request.
Dear Shark (esq),
Can we have a new place for political threads please?
Maybe adjacent to the log pile (but not within) is appropriate?
A suitably abusive/childish/daft name would be good too...
Yours sincerely,
TomTom

I've seen some really interesting stuff on politics on here that really made me stop and think. Especially the interaction of politics with people in organisations: health, education etc, based on real evidence and experience (as opposed to ideological hot air).. Maybe ya-boo party election politics is the problem and if so there isn't really that much here beyond Sloper, who will insist on telling us to vote for a party he probably doesn't even believe in, presumably out of fear of worse.

I don't think there's any need. Things have improved considerably and there seem to be far fewer threads started purely to provoke. It might be a bit odd of me to say this seeing as I've pretty much given up commenting on political threads, but I do still read them and sometimes even learn something.

+1
Another problem is that I am sure everyone has a slightly different opinion as to what is "political" and what isn't.
+2 It would be difficult to get me angry about politics and there has been a few things linked to that i have genuinely learned something from so i dont have an issue.
However i get really angry at hippy twaddle about " the best climber is the one enjoying themselves the most" or any mention of the Indian Face so can we have some kind of sub forum for all of that kind of thing.
-
I like the threads. I've learned loads and while there's a fair bit of trolling, it tends to be thought proboking as well.
That said, I think a politics sub-forum would be a good idea.

.... but the best climber is the one most enjoying themselves the most when leading The Indian Face!?

I quite honestly enjoy arguing with Sloper.
There are some particularly well informed commentators within the forum (Andy, comment more. You know, that old shill about those who don't learn from history being doomed to be Sloper...) and I would suggest that reworking the unread/front page selection criteria would be preferable.
If it can be done.
On Tapatalk, you just get everything, in chronological order; so it's just not an issue.

+3 which is why a political sub-forum wouldn't really work. What amazes me more is how much time several people seem to have during the working day to read and write so much. Some days I'm lucky if I get the time for a sh*t.

Climbing is political, I wrote an article for Summit on the subject about 12 years ago.
Top roping = socialist,
Bouldering = lib dem
Trad on sight = Tory
Winter climbing =Monster raving loony
-
I spend all day in a climbing wall.
Spending half an hour thinking about something else is necessary.

That wasn't a criticism Matt....

I know.
Mine, however, was a cry for help...
Ed managed 1-5-9 tonight and now I feel really old.
-
Apparently, he only managed 1-5-8.5, so that shaved 6 months off my age burden.
-
Easy Trad on sight = Tory
Hard Trad on sight = Anarcho-Situationist
-
Route chipper = nihilist
