Anyone been out anywhere on the western side of the Peak lately? How much snow is there? I'm basically wondering about the usual suspects... Roaches, Newstones, Baldstones and particularly Ramshaw. In fact that's pretty much everywhere covered.
Thanks.

Flash:

Looks a bit grim.
-
Thanks, that was kinda what I'd summised from the various webcams. The forecast for dry but near windless, cloudy murk doesn't really arouse much excitement either.
Orme it is then.
-
Just in case anyone is still interested in this given the current bad run of weather, we made an optimistic trip to the Roaches area today. On the upside the all the roads were fine, on the downside all but the most exposed pieces of rock seemed to be damp and refusing to dry. We ended up at Baldstones after finding everything at the Roaches wet and managed to do one or two things on the Varicose boulder, but other than that the dampness ruined everything.
-
was that you today then on the ripple?
-
Latest in case anyone's interested:
Roaches - Lower tier still had lots of snow on the tops of stuff - didn't check the upper tier. Clouds bouldering all fine. Tetris block in mint condition today.
Newstones & Baldstones - Still snow / ice around but Baldstones traverse / Sly stallone / Ripple all do-able. Fielder's wall stuff is covered in frost.
-
Any chance roaches will be in or am I better trying yorkshire
-
recon you will be better off at the wall but if any one knowns of any dry rock then I'm all ears
-
it was dry in the works today ...
-
Has anyone been out in the west hood recently? The weather looks promising tomorrow, any one have ideas on less breezy destinations if it gets a bit Ice T up in there? :ninja: looking at roaches/ramshaw group primarily.
Thanks
-
Looks exciting:

-
oh, great.
should of checked the cam myself :spank: but cheers, i'll check out the snow proof thread.
-
anyone been down recently? main areas of interest being the condition of the tetris boulder and the spring boulders, cheers.
-
Pissed it down all day (hard) in Manc.. And frost/ice forecast over the tops.. Not the most favourable of conditions but who knows.. Forecast looks good tomorrow...
-
What recommendations do people have for Western Grit tomorrow? Will more than likely be alone (unless someone wants to meet up) and with one pad so not really after highballs. I know Roaches Lower Tier is the obvious choice (is it? Will it have dried in the trees?) but I'd rather go somewhere new like Newstones/Baldstones/Gib Tor. Looking at doing plenty in the 6a - 6c range and perhaps a handful of 6c+ and 7a.
-
Scouting out Churnet on mtb today, Wright's and Gentleman's should be ok tomorrow. I know it's a bit away from Roaches area which you mentioned.
-
roaches clouds were way to windy today, but most of the rock was dry despite showers
-
Should have posted this last night but was tired and decided I prob wasnt going to bother trying to climb today....however I now would quite fancy it.. Was thinking of going to the roaches (specifically the clouds and probs various bits of the skyline). Has there been any snow/ sleet up there ? Will it be minging today despite the weather looking rather sweet....sun shining and dry from the afternoon onwards...
Ta. Steve

Flash bar webcam looks pretty snowy.
-
ah. I was trying to find a webcam earlier (didn't try that hard) but didnt find one. Does look pretty snowy, good thing i didn't risk it I think. Thanks for heads up!!

anyone know what state Roaches area was in today?
-
Ramshaw was a bit damp from runoff, but there was quite a bit climbable and a reasonable number gathered around Tierdrop, so I assume that was dry? Newstones was a bit damp on the topouts and most of it didn't get enough sun to dry properly.
The Roaches and Hen Cloud looked to be in reasonably good nick from a distance, but can't say any more than that! Most things at Ramshaw/Newstones facing that sort of direction were ok though.
-
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone happened to see what state Mushin' at Roaches Lower Tier was in over the weekend or today? Thanks, Steve
-
Anyone been anywhere near the tetris block recently? Or the area in general? There's still a lot of snow on the local webcams, wondering if the boulders are clear?
-
No specific knowledge but there seemed to be less snow in the West (was driving over from Stockport on MOnday to East). As East was generally clear then I'd hope reliable blocs in West would be too.
-
All the main western edges are surrounded in a wet mist, rocks all wet and its dead calm.
-
how is it on the western front this morning?
-
Manky with seeping cracks earlier at Roaches, but mega friction at end of the day.
-
Has anyone driven past the Western Edges today? Snowbound or okay??
-
Conditions were pretty much perfect this evening at the roaches. No problems with snow or melt except the usual suspect - tech crack run off area.
Cheers
-
Anyone been to down today or yesterday? Whats it looking like?
x
-
Tempted to go The Roaches and try Tetris..etc tomorrow. Does anyone know if the roads are too iced to get there and if everything is covered in snow??
It looks pretty fucking cold tomorrow anyway especially with the slight breeze, may abort to Stoke wall if it's not looking too promising!
-
Mate, I was there yesterday its all fine- almost had the place to myself, though it was surprising a bit too hot!
Should be good tomorrow and had no problems with the road.
Cheers
-
:2thumbsup:
Just need to read through the winter bouldering survival advice thread and make sure I cover all bases. I could do with a pair of those men's ugg boots masquerading as approach wellies in Decathlog.
-
supreme fog scene in alti at the moment, supposed to remain tomorrow according to forecast. best to check flash bar stores webcam int morn before setting off if I were you.

Foggy and dank in East Manc this morning. The roaches might just pop out of the top but I expect it is minging right now..
-
looks alright, baltic but alright:
http://buxtonweather.co.uk/ (http://buxtonweather.co.uk/)
-
Having actually stepped outside now I can confirm it is a dryish fog.. Verglass on the drain pipe though..
-
Buxton is clear and top of Longhill was warmer than Whaley Bridge this am. There will probably be ice, but I'm sure there'll be something clear. Sleeping with the Flowers etc. was best on Saturday, lower tier will definitely be icy!
-
Good conditions today. Warmed up at the spring boulders. The ground was less frozen than I was hoping it to be! Also learned I can't climb slabs very well. Got one of the pads soaked despite using a tarp. Went over to Tetris and the nice crisp sun had been replaced by slowly descending fog. Bailed off Tetris quite badly missing pads and decided it was too scary with my meagre 2 pads and no spotter. Managed Trust and Thrust though which were nice. Bit of a brown pants moment standing up on that smear on Trust! :)
-
Thought you were one of those rare breeds who could burl at the cave and piss up Monoblock?
-
Too much indoor pottering about and not enough proper climbing or training has turned me into an infrequent and weak outdoor aspirational punter! :weakbench:
-

what a problem, the little blind cross through with the right foot is superb

Agreed! :)

Anyone out and about? Brightening up in Manchester so hopeful.......
-
Xmas with the good lady's family near Stafford but got a day pass on Xmas eve. Any local's knowledge on areas most likely to be dry in the Roaches area? Had been keen for a look at Teirdrop but wonder if the Roaches would be better.
-
Everything dries pretty quickly if there"s a bit of wind, lower tier takes slightly longer, the fourth cloud would be a good bet. The jug on tierdrop can stay damp for a while but it"s big enough not to matter that much.
-
Thanks for that. Woken to breezy blue skies today, hope tomorrow's similar... Merry Xmas!
-
Really good at the roaches, then it snowed and now its bad. Anywhere sheltered from the fine snow - ramshaw probably is still in good nick.
cheers
-
Ramshaw... Sheltered...
-
Went for a walk past Ramshaw today - everything is wet.
cheers
-
Odds for the weekend? We're in the Whillan's Hut.
-
Of you crushing? Slim to non
-
Ice punter! Backed off any approach ice yet?
-
Changes of dry rock tomorrow?
-
Best connies will be the windiest spots that dry quicker. Hill fog forecast tomoz so could be claggy high up. Sundays looking like the best day fo sho.

-
Bit late but the Roaches was all bone dry yesterday, conditions were good in the morning, got slightly warm later on.
-
can't seem to win. got too hot on lower tier - good day for trad ing it up though.
-
Everyone in the world was at the Roaches today!... I could see them all scurrying about from the peace of Hen Cloud, which a couple of mates and I had to ourselves :)
Most conditions up there were great out of the bitterly cold wind.
-
went to Hobson moor yesterday, all dry except a few patches on the left wall, traverse was dry though
-
Any reports on the roaches today? Have the day off but want to know whether its worth the 2hrs drive or should I stay in and train!
-
Looks like a clagfest at nearby Flash on here http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/ (http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/)
-
Ahhh rubbish. :( Maybe not the best conditions to try C3P0 then...training session it is! :weakbench:
-
Anybody been up to Wimberry recently?
-
Anyone put off the Roaches at the moment should think again; because its been prevailing easterlies the crags have effectively sheltered the access road from the heavy drifting affecting everywhere else - access was OK; also the rock hasn't got much lying snow on it and no thaw as yet - Tetris block was mint..
-
I'm desperate to get out on to the Grit this weekend. If anyone has been out and about please let us know what its like and what the roads out there are like.
-
me toooo! I really want to get baldstones traverse done before end of spring! if anyone has info on state of A53 would be appreciated...also the chances of that bit of rock being ok after all this snow...
Steve B
-
The roads are fine now and you will find some dry grit, not sure about baldstones travel tho, there's a good chance the low footholds will he under snow
-
Was at Wimberry today. Everything is fine apart from the Scoop which is filled with snow and ice.
-
Went out for a walk today...made sure it went past newstones/baldstones so could scope it out...
Seemed in generally good nick. Snow has shifted from the top of blocks already like charlie's overhang etc and also melted from the base of most of the blocks. rock dry :D
-
Anyone been to the roaches? Is mushin dry?
-
Anyone been to Gib Tor recently? Thanks.
-
Gib Torr in good nick.
-
It's the annual trip to the in-laws so a rare chance to enjoy t'grit.
Tomorrow looks wet but Thursday's forecast is to be bright and breezy. Any locals got recommendations for areas likely to dry quickly? I've never bouldered at Ramshaw so keen to try there, Teirdrop in particular, but guess that faces east so won't be getting the drying south westerly.
Cheers for any help, and if anyone's going to be out and wants to meet up drop me a line.
-
It's very wet here today..
I would have thought your best bet at Ramshaw would be the magic roundabout boulders - nice clean lines very exposed to the wind so dry quickly + good quality probs at a nice spread of grades.. Slightly high ball tho and pads tend to blow away if its windy!
V much doubt tierdrop would be in sorry - the top slab seeps plenty..
-
Cheers for that. I'm a Scottish boulderer so a few tent pegs to keep the pads down are always in the bag!
-
The very very far skyline boulders and doxey's pool boulders all dry quickly but again that is because they are so exposed so if wind is really up might not be too much fun. Also ground around Doxey's pool boulders can be very boggy, the very far skyline boulders aren't as bad in this respect..
Both these spots can be found at the Roaches.
-
In case anyone was wondering how bad Western grit compares to Eastern, I just read this on the news:
It follows wintry showers across northern Ireland, Wales and eastern England earlier, with the town of Leek in Staffordshire recording the day's heaviest snowfall of 12cm (4.7in).
:geek:
-
Any update on roaches area? It's the annual family visit and I've got to decide between 2 days on Dartmoor or Staffs grit.
-
2 days on Malc's arete.
-
Roaches lower tier was bolloxed this afternoon apart from the rumour and c3p0. Ramshaw was a much better shout, cleaned monologue, epilogue, night of lust and the left hand variant and California screaming was a go too. Some people on ram air as we left as well.
hope that helps! :punk:
-
Access by car to Roaches, Ramshaw and Gib Torr all possible today (Hyundai i20). Roaches lower tier pretty cold and damp as said above but upper tier had some dry spots. Pretty much all problems on calcutta buttress climbable and I saw lots of people getting on top of the large boulder with left + right groove climbs on...
Stall at Gib Torr wet (receving drips of water from melting snow high above). The fin also unclimbable (top out covvered in snow!).
Bit and bobs mentioned in above post at Ramhaw were indeed cleaned/ dry etc good job doing that ! :D
-
Saw a photo of the teris block on facebook and it looked dry and good
-
Great, thanks folks. Staffs it is.
-
with the tetris boulder being dry, do people think the skyline might also be dry?
-
We were at ramshaw this morning and night of lust was dry but everything else was minging in the fog;roaches was also in it. Sun came out later on so it should have dried it out and it was thawing quick enough that snow on the skyline boulders will have gone. But check the webcams tomorrow because if it's in the clag again you'll be knackered.
-
Just for info, Roaches today was generally good and dry. I visited Tetris block, Spring Slab and Calcutta Buttress and they were all good. Most of the lower tier stuff in the trees were still dank and damp, and some of the upper tier things too (e.g. Nadins Traverse).
Thinking I'll try Ramshaw tomorrow morning...
-
Looks like no one has posted in this in a while but anyone got any ideas about what might be dry on the Western Grit tomorrow? Tempted by Ramshaw/Newstones/Baldstones if they'll be in condition as I've been to the Roaches a lot.
-
All but the most exposed rock was dripping wet today and the forecast is log for tomorrow so all likely to be wet.
-
Looks claggy
-
Hmmm, not sure the Eastern grit looks any better, any suggestions from anyone about where in the peaks might be dry?
-
Crags facing the sun and the wind dried out okay yesterday, others did not. Still a good breeze today so if you can find somewhere in the wind but out of the clag you might be in luck.
-
Peak not Peaks
-
Depends where he wants to go. I think this is out near Buxton...

Peak not Peaks
The sole reason I refer to the Peak as the Peaks.
-
Anyone know what condition Ramshaw, Newstones and Gib Torr are likely to be in tomorrow?
Cheers
Edit: More specifically: Night of Lust, S&M, Stall and The Fin

Better than today in terms of dampness, but worse for temps... its baltic out there at the moment...

Colder the better for me... is there still snow over that way?
-
I was thinking of heading to the roaches tomorrow to try tetris. Any updates in the morning would be appreciated if there is anyone in the area.
Also, incase I get there and its wet or raining can anyone recommend rain proof problems in the area?
Ta
-
On the weak premise of living nearby but not having touched rock in weeks:
It’s been dry today and forecast for tonight dry; would have thought Tetris good to go as it dries very quickly..
Dare I say churned is often a session saver in rain, esp Wright’s
-
Churnet even - f*@#&ing auto-text
-
Craig Y Longridge was fine... though that’s very much north west grit ;)
-
Roaches in clag. Rock not wet but damp. Avoid.
-
Gopping.
Top of roaches in the cloud - drove past Ramshaw - all soaked. Furgeddaboutit for today... :(
-
Just back from upper tier. All boulders wet but dry below main face on the right and the problems right of the start to crack and corner are dry
Great set of problems those
-
Lucky!!
I set out at 2:30 figuring stuff would have dried only to hit a shower... went for a potter around Ramshaw and it was soaked from the shower. Hopefully tomorrow...
And I can just hear the rain on the roof again... never mind. Frustrating day with the weather and a toddler with a developing cold...
-
Weather's looking alright from 11 or 12 ish at the roaches today. How long do people reckon it'll take to dry? Been showery all morning and raining overnight I think. Thinking the skyline might be alright by the afternoon?
-
The odd shower forecast but a decent breeze and the previous couple of days have been dry, it should be worth a look for more exposed stuff.
-
Ok, thanks.
-
Anyone been out West recently? Are roads accessible?
Waiting for a flight home so no idea what’s in condition at mo. Thanks.
-
Shaz has posted a few pics on insta, looks promising.

Considering the Roaches tomorrow. I don't really know the area at all, will the roads etc. all be OK? Last time I was there was post-lockdown and parking was a nightmare, is it still bad? Thanks
-
I doubt parking will be a difficulty. Getting there might be though.
You should get an idea from the Flash webcam when the sun's up.

James Grant's peak webcam roundup is a better one-stop link:
https://www.jamesgphotography.co.uk/peak-district-webcams/
The Quarnford, Flash Bar and Winking Man (when it's pointed in a useful direction) are all pretty close. Snow on the ground but I suspect the sun will have burnt the sun off the crags.
