Title: Where in the country is dry today................?
Post by: account_inactive on November 30, 2009, 02:06:25 pm
Seeing as the weather has been awful of late and only a couple of places seem to be climbable I thought I'd start this thread as a temporary solution rather than having to look at all the others.

So at the moment it looks like:

Ravens Tor - Mecca, Ben's Roof, Weedkiller dry at the moment but right hand end fucked

Parisellas Cave - Some wet holds at the end of RA? Anything else, Doyle?

Almscliffe - Virgin Block, DMW area

I'm sure the grit will get dry as today it's looking cold and dry............

desperot at chatsworth - I don't think this actually gets wet unless the rain was coming on on a northwesterly.

Is nothing else at Alsmcliffe dry?  I was thinking of heading there tomorrow...

Probably, that was just a guess as those areas seem to be perma-dry

Anyone?

Had the Cliff to ourselves this afternoon. DWR and Crucifix areas were bone dry and totally protected from the bitter northerly wind and the driving rain. Great conditions. Basically, anything south facing was bone dry and pretty much everything else was soaked. That place really does have magical properties.

Was thinking of trying some Peak Grit tomorrow that is both likely to be dry and more importantly out of the wind! Was thinking Curbar and Baslow as keen to look at Hurricane and Flatworld but worried they might be wet.

Also thought about Cratcliff and T crack but this is also likely to be green/wet on top still i guess?

May just have to get the cave with plenty of rags/chalk for the streams  :-\

I would have thought that Flatworld would be wet, although there's little tree cover at this time of year

you'd be better somewhere more open, in the wind, quicker drying....

Remergence, unless its puddled below badly
Plantation, plenty should be dry enough
some stuff along the edge at Froggatt, sole power? Art of White hat wearing?

I'm sure there are loads more options, other than the Cave (not that there is anything wrong with the Cave obviously  ;))

So the cave is allright is it? hmmmmmm. I might be over this weekend.

Dylog and Folog are going to the tor today, but if Dylogs info is right then they wont be doing what they set out for (PUTP).

I am going to check the weather. Looks lovely outside and towards the cliff today. Take a jumper.

Before I default to the Plantation does anyone think Electrical Storm or Famous Grouse might be dry today?
Also tempted by the Eagle Stone but is that likely to have a moat surrounding it?

Cheers

Stanage, Burbage North and West dry today. Conditions very good! That said, there was some runoff coming down problems like All Quiet so not out of the woods yet. Burbage South looked dry as well, from a distance.

(This is the question I've been asking myself since Xmas day)

The ming finally cleared at Porth Ysgo today and the probs higher up the beach were crisp n dry (Foam Party, Brian Spray areas etc) but most of the lower stuff was still greasy.

btw there's a freshly deceased cow now padding the landing of the Ysgo Crack boulder - already smelling fruity - bring a nose-clip...

the Lakes were gash/gopping/sodden when I left this morning.. as Jim posted on the Parasillas thread sadly the low wind and mist means most places are clagged up at the moment.

is there news of dry rock from anywhere in the country??

anywhere climable today?
I know the peak is similar to Manc, ie not raining but wet on the ground and maybe dry off later on this afternoon.
Is anywhere dry thats a couple of hours drive from Manc?
eg north wales (not cave as going there tomorrow), merseyside, yorks, south lakes etc...

CLear blue skies in S1 and road/pavements outside the office pretty bone dry (can also check the Outside web-cam linked from the Wiki (FAQ -> Bouldering -> Useful Webcams_ (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page), as it looked pretty grey and cloudy over that way when I cycled into work an hour or so ago).  Someone higher/nearer might be able to provide a better report.

Lots of blue sky about now, plus breeze, should be good if you can dodge the forecast showers... I think the original webcam thread is a lot more useful than the wiki - http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,12946.0/all.html (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,12946.0/all.html)

Sunny all morning in lancs, though forecast to rain soon. Probably too late for today, but maybe worth considering that from Manchester you could get to Brownstones/Wilton/Blackstone Edge in about 30min - sometimes dry up this way when the peak is wet.

With a weekend pass to burn and the County apparently trashed I'm wondering is there anywhere in the country that hasn't got snow?

Noticed some stuff logged in North Wales (Dinas Rock and Pass Roadside) but webcams are showing plenty of snow. Anyone have any info?

Heard a 2nd hand radio report somewhere that Glasgow hasn't had snow and can't see any on webcams - Dumby likely any good?

Anything likely to be climbable North Yorkshire way this weekend? Had trip booked in for months and planning on going to Slipstones but I'm assuming that will be difficult to get to? Staying north of Pateley Bridge, walking distance to Sypeland, worth a punt there or better heading south to Brimham? Not been to any of these places so any knowledge much appreciated  :please:

Had a look at any of the north York moors venues? Lee's betaguides site might have some more info.. (Google betaguides)
I've been to slipstones after snow, and access was fine (think the road gets gritted) but there was quite a bit f wetness from melting snow running off over the top.. If that's melted (suspect unlikely but dunno) then there's generally no seepage at Slipstones.

You have my sympathies though, a group of us planned a Northumberland raid this weekend but looks like that'll be kyboshed by the weather.. Accommodation already paid for etc.. :-/
Title: Re: Where in the country is dry today................?
Post by: Steamboat Stello on January 23, 2013, 10:28:49 pm
Cheers tomtom, I'll have a closer look at North york moors, certainly a lot of venues on that betaguides site.

Yeah already got accommodation booked, we had a semi-abortive trip to Northumberland a year or two back so feel your pain! You not tempted to just head up anyway? Would some things at Kyloe not potentially be reasonably sheltered from snow?
Title: Where in the country is dry today................?
Post by: tomtom on January 23, 2013, 10:31:39 pm
Sounds like they've had a foot of snow, and when that starts melting (weekend) it'll be messy! Coastal NYM venues might be best - least snow there.. Drop Lee an email, he's dead keen about promoting the area..

Joker's Wall at Brimham also and Bat Buttress looks a likely bet (and very good)in the new guide.

Whitehouses might be a good bet.

Whitehouses might be a good bet.

It does have a high snowproof factor (tm)... and is up that way IIRC..

Whitehouses might be a good bet.

Shhhh, don't tell everyone to go there this weekend! If anyone goes before the weekend, could they be so kind as to brush snow off the drainage channels please? Especially the ledges over the wall at the end of Only Half The Story/Growled. Cheers!

Cheers for the suggestions. Jokers Wall at Brimham and Whitehouses look good. Anyone done heffalump wall at Sypeland, looks quite cool and like it might have a capping roof so may be snow-proof?

I think I'm the Almscliff jinx, despite what everyone says about it always being dry the three times I've tried going its been terrible!

It'll let you climb there one day. When it wants to ;)

We went for a look up last summer - dirty and snappy, sadly. Some good bits of rock and Heffalump wall is nice, but I wouldn't recommend the place one bit. Better off having a look around Brimham etc. in my opinion.

As of today brimham was really covered in a lot of snow but these were ok.
Jokers wall, bone dry
Happy days, every problem dry
Hole in the wall or what ever its called had a bit of snow in the hole.
Crimpy roof, only saw the back of the block from the road but im sure this will be fine.
Bat Butt, looked good.
Take wellies and a broom. :)

Brimham was dripping wet everywhere except Joker's Wall which was dry but with drips pouring off the top it made for difficult padding and unpleasant conditions. I brushed all the snow from Whitehouses which had started to dry by the time we left. Hopefully the forecasted rain for tomorrow will clear up early and leave some perfect conditions for the crush.

Thread resurrection...
I have three days when I can get out to most places in the North of England - where the fuck is going to be dry...?

*shakes fist at the sky*

GRR... too windy for the super exposed 'dry between showers' places.. suspect the schlime will be wet/unpleasant by now...

Bah. Yours lookinghopefullyoutofthewindowwhilsthammeringupdateontherainradar,

There are a few perma-dry venues in the Churnet. Condensation shouldn't be a problem today.

Ahh... (interest piqued..) Excellent! I have a shiny unused Churnet guide in my hand.. What areas are the perma dry?

EDIT: I read the guide - plenty of dry spots... start with Wrights I guess...

The UK shows its colours, Malham soaked again, so back to The Tor. Dry but totally Baltic, even in the sun. Indoors would have been a better bet, but maybe not for the soul. Note for keen folk - barely any wet anywhere except Bodymachine start.
