Post by: GaryB on June 05, 2007, 12:47:01 pm
Has anybody or does anybody go climing at Thor's Stone?
I've been on it as a kid, but only recently got into bouldering/climbing and have started to eye it up.

Its located at Thurstaston, as I'm sure you know if you live round that way.

Nearest Town:  West Kirby (3km WNW)
OS Ref (GB):     SJ244847 / Sheet: 108
Longitude:     3° 8' 9.35" W
Latitude:  53° 21' 12.31" N

I'm just after general comments about the climbing there, i.e what are the routes like etc as I haven' had the time to go down and have alook myself yet.  :-\

The Thurstaston Sandstone is a bit too soft for bouldering - the holds would soon degenerate, so I wouldn't recommend it. The nearest half decent bouldering is the Breck in Wallasey (if you can stand the urban setting). Failing that its only 15 minutes down the M53 to frodsham and Helsby and they are actually quite good.

I can't believe this has made the internet

I live in the mighty West Kirby and have resided in the Wirral abode for most of my pithy existence. As etjoset says, the rock is way too soft to climb on and in no way warrants any attention. It's good if you're a young child clambering about the rounded features, but that's about it. (Trust me, it takes a hell of a lot for me to write an area off.)

If you're over the better side of the water ( ;)), you have the Breck as etjoset also mentions. Better still, check out Pex Hill only a short drive away. You also have Frodsham not too far away.

Better than all of those and if you want real steely digits, get yourself to West Derby cuttings and download a copy of the retro topo that's linked to in the recent thread located here (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,5177.20.html). Take a nice big soft-bristled brush if you can.

If non of that floats your boat and you can afford up to an hour and a bits drive, drive over to the Orme conditions permitting.
