So we've had a surprise offer of babysitting for Saturday night and I want to take the Mrs somewhere nice to eat. Preferably somewhere we've not already been. Know that it's going to be tricky finding somewhere at short notice but I'd appreciate the esteemed gentlemen and ladies of UKB giving me their opinions of the best eateries they've been to recently in the Sheffield hood. Cheers.
Oh and let me know approximate cost as i don't mind splashing out a bit but also don't want to spend stupid amounts of money - unless it's really, really worth it. :greed:
-
expensive - marco @ milanos by milhouses park, artisan in crosspool
moderate - cant really think of one - that new leopold sq is nice, zizzi is pretty good, catch in crosspool
cheap - the pasta bar on sharrowvale road is nice, and suprisingly cheap. Actually, that might have been on a 2 for 1 deal on a tuesday now I think about it.
-
Loch Fyne (http://www.lochfyne.com/) was pretty good a few weeks back, and if you go before 19.00 you can take advantage of their £14 meal offer (two courses from a select menu & glass of wine).
Food at The Ivory (http://www.the-ivory.co.uk/da/55948) was very good although a bit pricey (think we paid ~£100 for three people when I ate there last including drinks). But nice ambiance and they often have live musicians.
Loved Wasabsabi (http://www.wasabisabi.co.uk/index.htm), the yellow fin tuna just melted in the mouth, not too expensive either. Haven't tried the teppanyaki bar yet though, but have found them highly entertaining in the past at other establishments.
-
I went to Rowley's at Baslow last Sunday which was very good. £30/head ish for a la carte. The Cricket Inn at Totley does very good pub food - bit pricey for eating in a pub.
I think Milano's is shut at the moment for holidays - but check.
Artisan - agree very good.
Cafe Buon Deli next to Lloyds bank in Bromhill very good Italian.
If you like kebabs & turkish food Zuegma on London Road is good & very good value, approx £35 for 2 including a couple of beers.
-
Thanks lads! Plenty to go at there.
-
Top 2 places in Sheffield :
For under a £100 - Moran's next to Dore station ( way better than Artisan )
For a mega meal £200+ - The Old Vicarage in Ridgeway ( currently best food & wine list in the area )
I'm feeling hungry now ;D
-
Old vicarage is awesome - I went with the wife to be 2 weeks ago, really really good. Luckily we had our meal bought for us by some relatives, but I'd happily pay, as the food, service etc is fantastic. Is you have spare cash to splash I'd recommend it.

£14 is after 7pm and not available on saturdays
They still have the £11 deal until the end of this month (2 courses plus glass of wine until 7pm), but you need to download/print a voucher (http://www.lochfyne.com/getdoc/06418d1a-e20b-4d67-a94f-9668669709cd/summerpromo08a5.aspx) first.

Aargh stop stop. Choice overload! Realised how many good places there are that we've not been to now as since the sprog arrived we don't get out much!
-
well known bouldering food critic Dave Mason also likes that Zeugma's joint.
-
Depends how long you have the baby sitting available for, but the one thing that we havn't done much since being parents is go to the cinema. Ok it depends what's on this Sat and if anything takes your (Or your Mrs) fancy. But if you like going to the cinema grab the oppertunity to go with both hands.
I thnk we have only been to the cinema about 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years now :(
You could then go on for a nice meal afterwards.
-
I know what you mean. We went to see Batman the other week. First cinema visit for about 2 years!
-
If you go to Zeugma's, there are two. Go to the one further up the road, (furthest from the city centre). Last time we went, we thought we'd try the lower one. We ordered something that they couldn't cook there, and waited ages while they cooked the meal at the other restaurant and carried down the street to us. I always like the food there though, good big portions, and they dish out free olives and beautiful flat bread while you wait.
-
That's one of the few places mentioned that we have been to. It was very good actually and as mentioned, cheap as chips.
-
As expected a lot of places fully booked apart from ridiculously early o'clock. However, The Ivory had one table for two left at a decent time so we're going there. ;D
It has very good reviews on the net so I'll not hold slackers entirely to blame if it turns out to be shit.
Thanks again for everyone's help. UKB rules.
-
Another vote for Zeugmas. Beautiful food, and plenty of it.
There's also a nice little restaurant tucked between Sainsbury's on Archer Road and the hideous gym/bed emporium opposite it. I forget its name, but I know Fiend is a big fan.
The only drawback is it's perhaps a little too affordable, and can be chock-a-block with proles at the weekend.
-
Mwah hah hah!
-
I went to Rossi's (just off London road), a while ago, which was really good. Quite an interesting building too, as it is in an old bank. Probably heading towards the more expensive side of things though.
-
I'm a big fan of Wig & Pen (actually that would have been good for you Jasper, undeserving bastard that you are), Sheiks, Wasabisabi, Ashoka, Baan Thai, Rafters, etc etc IF THAT HELPS.
-
Wig & Pen's changed hands / styles etc a lot hasn't it. What's it's present incarnation? Been plenty of times in the past for a few drinks but I've never eaten there.
This is a serious question by the way rather than a setup for more McDonalds pisstaking, I've resisted the urge.
-
I can feel you seething and straining against the bonds of restraint and decency from over here...
It shall be honoured.
It's very good. Tapas upstairs (extensive menu with plenty of cheesy stuff, errr, just nice really), newly opened/extended restaurant downstairs. Quirky layout to it all, very much like a restaurant set in some smart but old offices. Food is good, standard post-nouvelle-cuisine post-fusion high quality English cooking (well sourced produce, nods to traditionalism etc etc), not a huge menu and not huge portions but makes up for it in quality. Errr yeah that's it.
-
At the risk of being tarred with the 'London Wanker' brush, I thought the Walnut Club on Ecc Rd was worth a mention. Yes there was a decent "footballer's wives" contingent in there when I was last in, but the food was very tasty and reasonably priced, especially if you stick to their £5 / £10 / £5 (starter / main / dessert) menu.
If you're after a posh curry, Aagrah on Leopold Square has done us proud while we've been here, in fact I had my 30th birthday dinner there. I can recommend their tasty and generous tandoori mixed grill (if you're a meat-eater that is).

Walnut Club was recommended us to Dave Mason however it looked a bit out of place for eccy road when we last walked past.
On the same vibe as Aagrah, Cafe Guru is pretty decent or was when I was last there.
-
We've been to West 10, the wine bar/restaurant in Ranmoor recently, I rate the food there. Due to some of our fave places closing in the last year or so (Curators House, 543) it's nice to have somewhere reliable for the odd 'special occasion' (ie. whenever we get a baby sitter!)
Whose been to Rafters recently? Must get around to trying it.
-
I haven't been to Rafter's recently, last time was a few years ago but I'd been a few times around then and always found it to be really good - great food, good service. It seems to have slipped off the radar a bit now, not sure why. More recent beta would be useful.
Went to Aagrah in Skipton a couple of weeks back (random chance find after climbing up at Simon's Seat) and it was very good, one of the best curries I've had. Vast, epic menu, swift service, and distinctive dishes with clear ingredients.
Edit: I have been told that I've undersold The Wig and Pen and that I should have used words like "brilliant" and "best restaurant in Sheffield" etc etc...
-
city centre locations (all 2 mins from my office so regular haunts):
wig and pen - excellent re-vamp, great menu, good quality and wine list (go for the faggots starter..)
popolos (leopold sq) - good value iti style and great cocktails (the popolos mojito with iti extras is excellent)
platillos - best tapas in sheffield, good atmosphere and wine list and good for unexpected late nights
pasta bar sharrowvale road - always good value and reasonable food/wine
-
Went to a new place last night. Tokyou in Castle Square. Across the road from TJ Hughes and next door to Help the Aged.
Very impressed, excellent food with a good selection of Malaysian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai dishes, the squid starter was perfectly cooked, the portions were large and it was all very reasonably priced (starters £2.50-5.00; Mains £4.80-6.50ish; Tsingtao £1.60 a bottle). Service was pretty good too.
Get there before the end of September and theres 20% of your meal (including beers if last night was anything to go by).
-
How was the Ivory Jasper?
-
Very good. Really nice place, great staff and lovely food. Not too pricey either, I recommend it 100%.
Cheers slackers!
-
Excellent, glad to hear you enjoyed it. :)
-
Got some US relatives over next weekend and have booked the Ivory for Sat night.
On a related note, had noodles from the Vietnamese place on London road this week for the first time in ages, REALLY disappointed. Has it changed hands or something? Different menu and has lost what made it different, now it seems to be standard Chinese take away fare.

Yes. Go accross the road to Pho, it's much better and the staff are nicer.
Vietnamese Noodle Bar seems to be staffed by chinese people now. The new staff seem a bit uninterested crap now - they don't know the menu very well.
The crispy sea bream with tamarind sauce is actually better than it used to be.
Lagers Jr is a dedicated fan of their Hot And Sour Soup; the new version is not spicy enough in her opinion.
The Crispy Roast Belly Pork is now presented in bigger chunks, but is less tastey and the portion is a bit smaller.
-
Quick heads up on a decent offer.
Was out last night for a meal at Cafe Guru (http://www.cafeguru.co.uk/where/sheffieldwhere.htm) and was pleasently surprised when the bill came to find out starters and mains were 2 for 1 .
Offer is running till the end of November on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays (apparently the Sheffield restaurant isn't doing too well these days and they're trying to get more bums on seats).

Also not sure about the current state of this, but went to Tokyou before going to the OnSight Premier in mid-October and we received the 20% discount then too. Have been past (or in) recently to see if its still available.
-
Along the same lines - Artisan in Crosspool are doing some offers at the moment (recession meals?) We went a couple of week ago, and if I remember correctly they do a 3 course menu of the day for about £10 - think you have to be there before 7 pm and its Monday - Thursday. The food was up to their usual standards so I though it was good value. Catch are also doing a deal at the same time for £13/14.
All you have to do then is buy a few drinks.
-
Artisan is really good.
And Milanos are still doing their 2 courses for £15 Tues-Fri. Choice of about 5 starters and 5 mains. Very good value, and operates all evening.
Well worth repeated visits.
-
When we went to Loch Fyne for lagers' wedding do I noticed that they're still doing that bargain £11 deal mentioned earlier in the thread. I can recommend the place. It's nice that something that seems to work has finally been done with that building (ex Hanrahan's) and they've done it out very nicely.
-
(recession meals?)
Funny you should mention that, but thats basically what our waitress was saying. They wouldn't normally have done this at Cafe Guru, but people are already eating out less, so some places have started doing offers and they had to tow the line or loose out on business.
-
Went to Milano's lastnight and took advantage of their set menu. £23 for 3 courses - total bill £65 with pre-dinner drinks and wine. The food was their usual high standard and great service. My pasta starter was as good as I had during my recent honeymoon in Naples and Amalfi. The set menu runs Tuesday to Friday & is available all evening.
-
Maybe not among the highest quality establishments around but some cheap meals can be had using some of these deals...
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-restaurant-deals (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-restaurant-deals)
Currently including 2 for 1 at Zizzis, Strada, Pizza Express and La Tasca. All of which do a reasonable feed.
Last week me and a mate had free burgers at Walkabout bar. Bonus!

After watching an episode of Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares" in which Silversmiths (http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/) was featured, we went down tonight to try out their Tuesday "Pie Night".
Gorgeous rich but not stodgy venison pie & mash with some mini Yorkshire Puds to start. They do a veggie pie option as well. Well recommended.
-
Ah, we were wondering about that. Thanks for the tip Bubb's!
For Nat's birthday we went to Artisan. TBH given the hype I was a bit disappointed, nice setting, really well presented food but a bit lacking in substance. I'd pick Thyme Cafe every time instead.
-
Mmmmmm, pie.
-
Got taken out by my ladyfriend () to Cubana on Trippet Lane over the weekend - very tasty tapas-y stuff, and very agreeable Chilean Cab Sauv that wasn't too expensive as well!
Was very impressed with the service - we rocked up on spec on Saturday night at about half seven, they initially said they hadn't got a table but managed to squeeze us in.
-
Got taken out by my ladyfriend ()
very tasty
tapass
service
sounds like a winner
-
Just to add about Pie Night at Silversmiths - book in advance. They are very busy after the Ramsay program and could only squeeze us in after Selina turned on her professional pursuasion tactics.
-
the guys who own silversmiths took some of thier pies into the mrs office for all to taste. i tried the venison it was fantastic
-
Ramsey saved their ass. They were seriously up bankruptcy creek before he turned up. Must try those pies.......
-
Ramsay's a slag of all modern media. He could turn up w/ TV crew at Shazz's mobile greasyspoon [A14 southbound] and her takings would quadruple w/ no change to either the quality of produce, cleanliness of her squalid caravan (come-trucker knocking shop) or the viciousness of the shit-gurgling gut-aches her double egg and deepfried jumbo sausage baps are known to induce across swathes of the S. East, thanks no doubt to the inability of the UK TV viewing publics' inability to distinguish one dirty cunt from another...
Ramsay! Pffft.
-
Did you watch the program? The quality of food rocketed. I think Ramsay is a tool but he knows his business that's for sure.
The other restaurant in the same program continued to struggle because the thick owner wouldn't change his ways.
-
Did you watch the program?
Er, no, I'm not a UK resident. Excuse me, just trolling, Ramsay makes my blood boil. I concede, he knows a lot a about making money and getting the best (and worst) out of people.
-
The other restaurant in the same program continued to struggle because the thick owner wouldn't change his ways.
it always amazes me these people agree to be on that type of programme and then outright refuse to take any of the advice given. Its like those greedy clowns you see on property ladder, they declare they're in it to make some serious fast wedge, they wheel in that big titted bird to give them some sound advice, they alway ignore it any then when they end up making £500 profit for 9 months hardgraft, and that was only cos the market went up, because they ignored every single piece of advice given they say "well we weren't really in it for the money". fucking idiots. you can tell this is my first day back at work can't you.

But your posts over recent months suggest you have been working here of late so it was possible (albeit unlikely given your opinion) that you might have watched them.

I'm not that amazed myself, I'd imagine they believe that there is no such thing as bad publicity and by simply having their place on a show with a celebrity chef they will gain the exposure they need to save their ailing business. Unfortunately they're often too short-sighted to see past the end of their nose and realise that its they who are the problem.
-

Yeah the Sheffield owner was completely clueless and was running the restaurant into the ground with a combination of shit food and a totally confused venue. There's only so much that the publicity that the programme affords can do for a place. If they hadn't completely changed according to Ramsey's direction then they would have had a couple of weeks of busy nights and then everyone would have fucked off somewhere else again when they realised it was shit. As has happened at plenty of the other places he's been to.
You're right dave. It's these cunts who wont listen who are the tools. Ramsey can be a wanker but he knows his shit.
The US version of his show is fucking hilarious.
-
You're right dave. It's these cunts who wont listen who are the tools. Ramsey can be a wanker but he knows his shit.
...but it wouldn't be great TV for this great modern age if there wasn't any conflict in it!
Can you imagine if the people involved actually listened to the 'experts'? I'd be a pretty short programme...
OPENING MONTAGE (incl. Gordon stripping off for no apparent reason)
Lots of eye-rolling from La Ramsay about how shit the place is, then cut to:
Gordon: For fuck's sake you useless cunts, you need to simplify you menu / use local produce / get the running of the place organised. Now show me your balls, show me you've got some balls and get hold of your balls and do it...
Restauranteur: Oh, good point Gordon, I'll get right on it.

Sounds good to me, then it can all be over in five minutes freeing up air time for something half-decent (a la Red Riding, which I recorded but didn't watch last night) :P

There's a reason. 8)

Jeepers Maggers, make up your mind...
I thought you were into squeezing boho hippy climbing wads, or have you forsaken Sir Chris of Sharma after your recent experiences?
I don't think you'll get far stalking chunky jock chefs who can't keep their shirts on and like talking about other mens' balls a bit too much, though from what I've seen in the red tops...
-
It doesn't pay to have a set , that only limits you ;)
But yes, Chris and I are finished, I don't think we can ever go back to how things were. :'(
-
I went to one of Ramsay's restaruants in London just before Christmas and it really sucked. Terrible service & mediocre food... Judging by the reports in the financial press I'm not the only one to have noticed and maybe Gordon should've been concentrating on keeping his own house in order rather than swanning around on the world on C4/ITV's expense and hectoring other people on their own shortcomings (and knobbing women who he's not married to). I've no doubt that he knows his onions but I wouldn't be surprised to see bankruptcy and a humiliating 'I overstretched myself' series in the tabloids come this time next year..
-
He may fold some of the restaurants but I can't see him being daft enough to end up bankrupt. Mind you, his father in law is in charge of a lot of his financial empire so you never know................

Was very impressed with the service - we rocked up on spec on Saturday night at about half seven, they initially said they hadn't got a table but managed to squeeze us in.
We went to Cubana last night and had totally the opposite experience. Thinking of this post I rang up fairly late on and they said they had a table for 2 at 9.30, which we booked. When we arrived the waitress looked confused and basically suggested that we hadn't booked at all and was fairly rude. We were then herded to the bar before being squeezed on the end of someone elses table. Not really what we had in mind but by then it was late and I was hungry!
The alcohol seemed reasonably priced but each tapas dish was pretty expensive IMO for what you actually got, in fact comparing it to other tapas restaurants I've eaten in the food was definitely poor.
-
Funnily enough I was at Cubana last Monday (for someone's birthday meal at their Mellow Monday's - quite tolerable live jazz). Not as bad as Paul's experience but not as good as it was in the past - it was pretty good but the tapas was slightly hit and miss e.g. smoked swordfish was amazing, but chorizo was fairly mediocre. The prices do tend to add up for a few dishes...
Wig And Pen is a good alternative for tapas these days...
-
We finished the evening by getting horribly drunk on Cocktails and then heading home, 1st stop our tequila bottle. :alky:
I didn't make it to the tor this morning...
-
just done nats hair.she said you were drunk.
you out tommorrow?
-
Not quite as drunk as a few weekends ago when I acted out the scene from the full monty job center in the middle of thyme cafe (due to the music of course).
I'm hoping so... but the current rain is slightly worrying?
-
Ms Bubbs has been to Cubana and said the food was terrible.
-
I'd like to have seen that Paul.
Just booked a table at Fischers in Baslow for the gf's 30th. Has anyone been or heard anything about this place?
Looking for a place to have a fantastic meal and so far this is the best place I've come up with.
-
Crikey - either I'm Sheffield's worst restaurant critic or we just caught Cubana on a good night, hope it's the latter. Apologies if your choice of venue was based on my post Paul - I'll keep my culinary experiences to myself in the future!
Did anyone else see the review for Moran's in last week's Guardian? They gave it 9/10, and I know they're usually very hard to please. Anyone been?

I've been a couple of times, though not very recently.
Food is fantastic but I found the atmosphere very stuffy. Very formal, almost a bit uncomfortable - everyone was speaking in whispers. Service was also a bit overbearing - I like to be able to pour my own wine, not have it stored at the side of the room and then have a waiter hover over you constantly to watch for when you need a refill.
Found the Old Vicarage similar - beautiful food but stuffy atmosphere.
-

it was but I wouldn't worry about it, as you pointed out they DID have a table available at late notice!

Aw man, what if you had a crusty bogey you wanted to shift? Could you clap your hands and have Maitre D' send over gloved servant to pick it for you?
-

Sorry man - we may well have got lucky.
Based on this situation, I would advise that you avoid Silversmith's for dinner - whatever you do don't go there for a celebratory meal, make sure you don't have their cocktails and whatever you do you should steer well clear of the very reasonably priced Rioja on their wine list...
;)
-
Aw man, what if you had a crusty bogey you wanted to shift?
There's no way you'd get into Fischers with a crusy bogey ;)
I had that Rioja too TTT :)

Thanks Bubba. I suppose posh nosh places may suffer from the above issues of atmosphere/service. Looked at the Old Vicarage on t'web and it looked really old fashioned (not in a good way) in comparison to Fischers.
I'll report back.
-
Had some excellent food last night at Sakushi (http://www.sakushi.co.uk/about/) bit pricey if you have too many purple dishes, but lots to choose from. Didn't try any of the noodle dishes, but they looked good (and very generous too). Yellow fin tuna sashimi melted in the mouth and tempura prawns were dead tasty :)
Sit right by the kitchen counter and you can a) grab dishes as they come out; b) request specific dishes without the having to ask a waiter

I agree entirely with your experiance at the Old Vicarage, nice but very hushed. We've been to Fischers a couple of times and found it much friendlier, and better atmosphere. Probably depends on the night as much as anything else; that and the fact that when we've been to Fischers its been with a few friends, so we could well have been making our own noise...
Been to Morans too, very nice but not really in the same league as Fischers in terms of food. Damn sight more convenient though.
-
 Double thumbs up for Fischers. Amazing experience. Great food and wine. Loved the chef special surprises (more restaurants should do these). Thought the atmosphere wasn't too stuffy, although it did feel more formal than I'm used to. The waiters were attentive but this wasn't a problem (don't know why). Also they were all eccentric, in their own way, which is always a bonus.
Going to try Morans and also maybe Greenhead restaurant once I've paid for this meal.
-
Glad you had a good time - the first time we went to Fischers it was nice, it was our 2nd visit that put us off with the stuffiness. Hopefully it was just a bad night.
-
we went to moran's a couple of weeks ago for shorties b-day. was quite good. slightly disapointing they didn't have any proper beers on, the most passable thing was to order a grossly overprices bottle of guiness extra cold out of the fridge and sit there with your hands round the bottle for 20minutes to warm it to the point where you can actually taste the stuff. other than that, i had no complaints.
-
We went to Thyme last night and had a rather average meal which was very disappointing. I think it was something to do with being a bank holiday Monday and everyone wanting to be somewhere else...
-
I think its not quite as good as it was these days. I dont mean by loads, and maybe its just that I have been too often and am misty eyed eulogising its early days, but i'm less impressed these days. Anyway, on a similar theme and worth a look for all of y'all gastro skin flints out there, swing past Canteen upstairs at Artisan in Crosspool. Its what used to be catch and is now an economy based restaurant. Is pretty good. 2 courses for a tenner, three for 12, usual quality of Richard Smith food but with less frilly menu options. Portions are small, but at 2 for a tenner you'll be having a starter and you probably shouldnt have a dessert anyway you fat bastard.
Lunchtimes you can have a sandwich for £4. This is such good value its amazing. If you cant book a table - try just rocking up, we've never booked and have always managed to get in fairly quickly.
-
catch
Darn it. Wanted to try this plaice.
The Italian (Pappa Ciccios) just down the way from this is pretty good I think. Plus the decor is amazing. Very erm kitsch. Another good point to any restaurant of a certain calibre.
-
yeah pappa ciccios is our favourite italian this side of town. always good shit there, plus its bring your own. In contrast to the other italian place in crosspool which i thought was mediocre and I got some nonplus foodpoisoning there.

Had the same experience when I went over Easter weekend - my other half had a very average cottage pie that I could have made at home, and while my chorizo stew was plentiful, it wasn't brilliant.
Oh, and I'll throw in a big up to The Milestone in Kelham Island - a bit out of the way but very good as gastropubs go. They've got a restaurant upstairs with full services, and the pub downstairs is standard gastro fare.
The only thing I'd say is avoid it on a Friday night, and don't sit near the bar we did and despite the place being pretty overtly pitched as an eating venue we got surrounded by a middle aged weekend bashment, and as a result I couldn't hear my girlfriend speak. Admit this this was a schoolboy error on my part though.

Really close to me this, was it expensive or ok if you don't mind me asking.
I find it a little funny that thyme has a cookbook "thyme after thyme" "the secret of consistent cooking"
-
Oh Jesus - Paul, after my tapas recommendation I'm worried I'm selling you a dummy here, but in the spirit of caveat emptor and all that...
Not too bad - IIRC around £70 for two, and we had a couple of drinks beforehand, main courses and desserts (my lemon meringue pie was ace), coffees and a mid-list bottle of rouge. They do a good thing where they're getting involved in breeding livestock for meat, I had some of the sausages from their pigs and while they were a touch overcooked it didn't spoil them.
Upstairs is more pricey, and I suspect more food-y dishes/ quiet. We're defo going again, but gonna do it on a weeknight when there should be less chance of landing in the middle of someone's 40th.
Link to their site below - might be worth popping on recon for a pint to check out the bar menu as it's certainly changed from what's on the site:
http://www.the-milestone.co.uk/ (http://www.the-milestone.co.uk/)
-
On the contrary, I think you've just answered my prayers! Somewhere in Sheffield that does Egg's Benedict from 11am at weekends... Mmmmmmm It can't get much better than that (unless of course its shite).
-
Stick a recommendation from me in the pile for the Milestone. This place is lovely. They were doing an early bird (perhaps 5-7pm) deal which was perhaps 2 for 1 or something like that. Whatever, its well nice. I would be happy paying full shebazz for the pleasure of eating there, is good. Service very attentive and genuinely bothered rather than fawning. All locally sourced produce too.
-
Sounds interesting, a wide variety of food with a....fancy sounding restaurant menu. I like the idea of Sheep Week :)
-
Aye, will have to check the Milestone out, looks well nice.
-
Could have a UKB heptuple dinner date meet there.
Or NOT.
-
i think I'll be testing this place out Sat brunch and Sunday munch. I'll report back.

Brunch this morning

So far, Tommytwotone I owe you a LOT of karma (and its positive!)...

The Milestone: Kelham Island
Saturday morning Nat and I went for birthday brunch. We both had the double eggs-benedict which was nigh on perfect apart from one of the four eggs being hard poached (boo!).
Saturday night we stopped in for drinks, the cocktails were good, Leffe Done right was a surprisingly good one.
Sunday night my folks stopped by so we went for the early bird menu. This is where it all went a little tits up. Seated, order drinks and I get told mine is off. Fair enough. Everyone picked their food and as we came to order got told that two items from the menu were no longer available (from the early bird menu this is quite significant) and its a bit annoying that they didn't point it out at the start (when I still had a drink left!).
Starter (a salmon dish substituted from the main menu) was poor
Main course was ok but the lamb burger I ordered was pretty dry. The chips were damn good.
Desert, dark treacle tart was more of a treacle cake. It looked the part but my god there were some things wrong with it. They'd put what they like to call their "home-made jelly tot" on the side, a home-made gelatine sweet of some kind. It took 5 minutes to eat a 1 inch cube and left most of my teeth glued together. The base of the cake was so hard I had to shield myself from it with my other hand while I chopped.
BUT... 2 courses for 12 quid with a glass of wine or a local pint? Pretty good value for money. I won't be rushing back to sample dishes from the main menu as the dish substituted for the missing started was no better plus all of the dishes featured on the Early Bird Menu also feature on the main menu.
I WILL go back for Brunch and drinks.
Its also worth noting that they do a cocktail master-class, learn how to mix 6 classic cocktails and then leave smashed (its cheaper than buying the 6!).
-
Went to Silversmiths yesterday evening before seeing St Etienne at the Leadmill. Wednesday's and Thursdays they do a shortened menu and it's 3 courses for £15 (http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/silversmiths-menu/3-courses-%C2%A315-chefs-special-set-menu). Bargain! There were two starters to choose from, three mains and three desserts, it was actually nice not to have to decide between loads of options. The Mrs didn't want dessert so they only charged £12 for the two courses, a nice touch.
I can't be bothered going into detail but basically everything was really, really good. Great food, excellent friendly service, nice cocktails and wine and the place is very nicely done out. As Lagers & Mrs Starfish had given us a voucher to spend there it didn't cost me much at all but it was more than reasonable anyway.
I can't recommend it enough. Oh and St Etienne were awesome and The Leadmill was rammed with mid thirties ex ravers.
;D :dance1:
-
On recommendations from here, went to Silversmiths this evening on the spur of the moment. All I can do is echo previous sentiments about value, quality and service. I'll definitely be heading back at some stage in the near future, and would agree with Jasper that the 3 course for £15 menu is mega.
I would offer waddage for all those recommending it, but I'd feel uneasy spreading so much love to so many people. ;) Consider yourself all honorarily wadded...
-
Strangely we ended up back at the Milestone the other night as it was convenient.
It didn't start well as they'd scrubbed my previously recommended cocktail but from there on the evening was nigh on perfect.
Again we all ate from the Early Bird Menu but this time the Chef must have either been different or last time wasn't brining his A-game. It was all presented better and the main point; it tasted a f*ck load better.
Slightly worrying that it seems a little variable but nonetheless, a tentative recommendation here.
-
A quick search didn't reveal anything relevant so I'm posting in here.........
Had the best Indian take away I have ever eaten from here (http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3DVFA_enGB243GB247&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=Spice+Nutriment+Brighton&fb=1&split=1&view=text&latlng=10719829297504304725) on Sunday night. Not a lot of use to those of us in the South Yorkshire area unfortunately and it got me thinking. We've tried a variety of different Indian delivery places and found them all to be pretty much of a muchness when it comes to price and (variable) quality. One nearby seemed marginally better than most so we've stuck with them but having experienced a different level in quality I'm ready to ditch them if there is anywhere approaching this level in the area.
So, is there?
I really don't mind paying a bit more :greed: if the food is that much better. This is all about the quality.
-
ok the ruby takeways i've gravitated to:
rajput on commonside, walkey - dope (this and the freedom house are the 2 things i miss about walkley).
bilash, hunters bar (sharrowvale road) - fly
have eaten in at the ranmmor tandoori and panahar on fulwood road loads of times (both run by the same peeps, same menu) so takeaway from there aught to be decent.
-
It might be an obvious question, but have you eaten at Nirmal's on Glossop Road ?
Especially good if you are a vegetarian.
It is more expensive though
-
my shortie has had work meals at nirmals and said it was shit.
-
Do any of these fuckers deliver? Google is not helping.
Please don't do the liver joke.
-
Do any of these fuckers deliver?
no they just do lamb, chicken, prawns etc. (its no use editing your post after i reply....).
i'll check when I get home if bilash deliver.
-
my shortie has had work meals at nirmals and said it was shit.
I didn't see what all the fuss was about with Nirmals tbh. Nice enough but nothing special.
-

I clicked post and then immediately edited it you quick mofo!
Cheers. Bilash would only be a short drive to mine so if they do it could be a goer.
-

I think if you're vegetarian then its quite a bit better than the limited menus you get at most places.
Its a pity that we haven't got any (AFAIK) Southern Indian mainly veggie restaurants in Sheffield.
-
actually for vegelesbians there's a relativey extensive veg menu at both bilash and rajput takeaways - we quite often order all veg shit just cost its so damn good, and cheaper.
-
Might try the Bilash then.
Had a takeaway from them years ago and thought it was OK but not great.
That was about 12 years ago so its probably completely different now
-
We are pretty much the wrong side of town for delivery places but here are our recommendations based on disliking the same old crap british indian food and having spent two weeks in India.
Jinnahs (http://www.jinnah-restaurants.com/Sheffield/) - Ecclesfield Rd
Has a wide range of dishes including I think a thali (very traditional Indian dish - small portions of many dishes). Collection only I think.
7 Spices (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=7%20spices%20sheffield&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) - Shalesmoor Rd
Rated by some Indian colleagues and personally I think it is pretty authentic too. Collection only again although I might be wrong.
Eastern Eyes (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=7%20spices%20sheffield&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) - Firth Park Rd.
Really rate this place. You can eat in but we never have. The food is very good and reasonably priced. Do deliver but probably wrong side of town for you.
This person liked it http://www.qype.co.uk/place/172782-Eastern-Eye-Sheffield (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/172782-Eastern-Eye-Sheffield)
They also mention a few other places we've tried such as The Mangla (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=the+mangla+sheffield&fb=1&split=1&gl=uk&view=text&latlng=9354307483162207454) and The Gulshan (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&view=text&hl=en&gl=uk&q=the+gulshan+sheffield&safe=active&ie=UTF8&sll=53.424218,-1.412424&sspn=0.107644,0.154672&latlng=53386572,-1462832,438841924176589918&ei=oHMmStrQDNHPjAfs2cy7BA&cd=1) who are pretty good and do take away (delivery unknown).
Getting further away. Another option is Elachis (http://www.elachis.com/) at Hoyland. Also pretty good restaurant who do take away. They do a handi of the day which is a bit of a lottery but you always have to ask just in case it sounds good.
A small mention for Bayleaves (http://www.bayleavesrestaurant.co.uk/) - Not been for while but enjoyed it last time we had takeaway from there.
Hmmm something of a relationship developing here. Good restaurants providing good take away.
If only somewhere served food like you get in India. :goodidea:
-

The nearby one isn't Tanzella's is it Jasper? Wrote them off a long time ago, but was famished Saturday and wife had eaten so popped up for collection (2 for 1 on main courses on collection) and the Jalfrazi has improved massively, exceptionally nice and nowhere near as greasy as they used to be.
Mehran in Darnal (http://www.mehran.9cy.com/) has been the takeway/delivery of choice for us for some time though and they deliver free of charge on orders over £10 (and as we're round the corner from you that should be fine too), well worth checking out.
If you're going out to eat Cafe Guru (http://www.cafeguru.co.uk/) in town (just up from Frog & Parrott) is very nice. Last time I was in there just before xmas there as 10 or 15% discount Sunday-Thursday (or something like that) as they were struggling from "The Reccession".
Second Dave's Rajput recommendation in Crookesmoor (not just for veggies either). They've recently expanded and opened a restaurant on the side too which is rather nice.
-
Yeah Tanzeela's. It isn't bad at all, just not in the same league as the place we ate from in Brighton!
Thanks people. A few to go at there.
-
Not been to the Bilash for years. Personally, I still rate the jalfrezi from the Kebab House, opposite the Broadie.
Agree, Nirmals is crap.
Why is there such a dearth of decent Indian restaurants in Sheff?!
For outside S Yorks, this is the best curry I've had by miles http://www.rasarestaurants.com/UserPages/Viewrestaurantdetails.aspx?restid=33 (http://www.rasarestaurants.com/UserPages/Viewrestaurantdetails.aspx?restid=33)
-
Why is there such a dearth of decent Indian restaurants in Sheff?!
is there a dearth? I would quite happily eat out at places like estikutum (attercliffe), ranmoor tandoori, panahar, royal spice (walkley), indian chef (crookes), jaflong (crookes) the mangla, aishas (eccy road) and rajput on commonside (since they've apparently got a sit-in now). and that's only the ones I know, which is by no means exhaustive.
-
There's nothing stunning in that list though...
-
if you got better ones don't be shy. generally speaking them i've listed are all easily above average for standard not-too-expensive non-a-la-carte style typical bangladeshi-run british indian restaurants. places i would (and have done) go back to. certainly up to the standard of "decent" places T_B says we have a dearth of. in my opinion not below par compared to elsewhere in the country that i've eaten at. you can add Aagrah in leopold square to that list too, great food good atmosphere.
i actually think we don't do bad at all for "decent" curryhouses in sheffield. the only 2 i've been to and wouldn't go back to are Sahibs on west street (just really poor) and Vijays on Charter Square (average food and I got food poisoning).
-
I thought the point was theres nothing available a notch above the restaurants you listed?
I wouldn't venture near 7 spices at West Bar...
-
Hang on, we're talking about curries here.
Now admittedly the English curries bear little resemblance to those from their country of origin, but in said country some of the best are served in the street in a rough and ready manner (and if you go for chicken you're likely to get beaks & claws in there too). Thus for me at least its all about the flavour, not the décor/ambiance of the place and how well the food is presented, and of those listed so far there are some damn fine examples.
Best tip I have for curry tasting is to have a "signature" dish that you always have when you go to a new place (or even upon repeat visits). That way you can actually compare like for like. Its also worth noting that the chef on duty can be the make or break as they will sometimes have individual styles, so its often worth going to a place more than once, on different nights to get a rounded view.
Are people angling for a Curry Mile for Sheffield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry_Mile)? Best one I've ever been in along there is the Punjab Tandoori (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/98519-Punjab-Tandoori-Restaurant-Ltd-Manchester), the parathas are gorgeous. Might have helped that my friend was chatting to them in Punjabi, but subsequent visits without friend have met the same high standards.
-
you can add Aagrah in leopold square to that list too, great food good atmosphere.
Yeah, that's the only place i eat out for currys (in Sheff) these days. World's speediest service! not had a takeaway from there but maybe tonight... :beer2:
-
Aagrah b2b Ashoka for quality. Those are the best, there's quite a few that are close and loads of reasonably good ones in the next tier down.
-
Ashoka was toss when I last went there.
-
Wasn't keen on Aggraaaaaaaah when I was there.
Food was ok, portions sizes weren't anything to write home about.
Contrary to what I wrote above though (about setting etc. of said restaurant) it was a bit too rushed for my liking and they seemed like they were trying to get you in, sat down, ordered, served and then out as quick as possible.
If I'm going out to eat I like to take a little time over the evening and enjoy it, not be herded through as though I'm on a conveyer belt.
-
Has anyone tried The Saffron Club? (http://www.saffron-club.com/)
-
I haven't but have been told its quite good. What 'quite' means I'm not 'quite' sure.
-
Ashoka was toss when I last went there.
Heresy >:(
You must have been unlucky, I went 4 or so times in the last couple of years and it was great each time.
-

 Went last week and go every few months or so. Pretty good curries, the Jingha Puree starter is delicious. Staff are very efficient and polite too.
-
shortie's peeps went to the Canteen (upstairs in thyme crosspool) the other week and said it was poor. fish with soggy batter etc.
-
The Cricket Inn at Totley does very good pub food - bit pricey for eating in a pub.
went last night. food was generally OK but the service was pretty shit. i won't be rushing back.
-
The Inn at Troway is run by the same people who run the Cricket Inn. Same menu, different location.
-
Have you been there (Troway) Bubs ?
I've heard mixed reports
-
Yeah, it was ok, same as Cricket really - good pub grub, some nice beers - nothing incredible but tasty.
-

There is a place called east and west on Abbeydale Road near the mosque that sells really good sri lankan and south indian food that tastes exactly the same as how I remember the food being in India. It is quite cheap and the portions are big. They have Masala Dosa, Idly, Biryani and all sorts of other tastey treats.
It isn't much to look at as it is really just a takeaway with a few tables inside, but it always seems to be popular with Indian families which I take to be a good sign. I have a friend from Tamil Nadu who goes there regularly as he thinks it is the only adequate substitute for Indian food in Sheffield.

I've been a few times (as a couple, with a big group and with family) and have only had a v positive experience. Last time the service was particularly friendly and helpful. You must have caught someone having a bad day?

I'll second this. I've had two take aways, both good and very differnt from usual curry fare. The only slight problem is the lack of english descriptions of the dishes on the menu, so you don't really have a clue what you're ordering or what goes with what, but trial and error has proved mostly successful so far.

This sounds good, and ideally located to check out on the way back from crags late at night (for me at least )

we caught about 4 people having a bad day.
-
Went to Hui Wei last night, the chinese next door to the Saffron Club on the top of West Street/Glossop Road.
Aside from forgetting to put extra green chilli's on my prawn and black bean sauce (as it recommends in the menu!) the food was very good (particularly the deep fried squid starter) efficient service and reasonably priced (~£30 for two of us, although no wine and only one beer was had).

I went into the cricket last Saturday - as had been riding up on Blakka with the Mrs. It took an age to get a pint - we only wanted a quick drink and the Crown down the road was shut. I think its got too popular and seems to be doing too much - all day food etc. You can't keep standards high if food is served all day the chefs were taking a break in one corner and they looked fucked and it was only 4 pm. It was also full of those over dressed Ecclesall Road types - one tart was moaning I was dripping sweat on the bar - it's a fucking pub not some posh restaurant.
However I have recently eaten twice at Milano's - great food & service. They cook stuff I can't cook at home and they do it really well, so in my mind worth paying for. Oh and Another mention for Zeugma on London Road - great food, just wish it was more spacious - although it now has air-con. We often pop in for early tea on a Saturday if we have missed lunch, as long as you are done by 7 pm - as they then have the annoying 2 sitting thing at 7 & 9 which is all too common in Sheffield restaurants.
-
Anyone been to Le Bistrot Pierre by sommerfields on Eccy road. Big newbuild thing that looks quite swish.
-
Its fine - nothing amazing, but perfectly OK, and reasonable prices. We will go back, they have some interesting looking Wednesday and Tuesday night thing; one is 3 courses with an appropriate glass of wine with each for £25, the other is 6 courses for £20. Details are on the website.
Just a shame that the lovely big windows look over a main road one way and Somerfield carpark the other.
-
On the "extremely cheap" side (for students and bums like me)
If you need lunch in town, "rise" opposite tesco on west street does stone-baked pizzas (toscana and fiorentina particularly good) of about the same quality as pizza express except you get a large pizza (or salad/baguette) and drink (bottle sol, coke, juice) 12-4 = £5.50. Accentuates just what a rip off pizza express is!!
Not for any type of special occasion but i seem to end up there for lunch at least once a week in the summer if i'm bored!
Any recommendations for decent places with cheap daytime/early evening dining at mo?
:-)

Yeah it's nothing special but pretty good for the money.

if this thread got coverage on the Sheffield city forums some of you lushes (read *I'm jealous coz I no longer have the time to eat out want I want*) would either be banned form everywhere in the city or become something a al Homer the foodtaster..
quality... once I actually get the time to go out I'll be following some of these recommendations, cheers.
BTW, there is Persian restaurant on the abbaydale rd, not far from the Works going out of town, the menu looks good... it is?
-
it was utter toss...
Well, I went back last Thursday, and it was still very good. Not quite as good as before as the fresh coriander tandoori chicken was a little overdone, but everything else was good. Mung Dhal and slighty (and pleasingly) singed poppadoms especially. Good lamb dishes and nice breads too. :P
Fatdoc: The Persian is pretty good, only been once but seem to remember it was nice, if not earthshattering, in that middle eastern genre.
-
Cheers .. checking it out tonight and will post back.
What do other folks think of Mish Mash on Eccy road.
We really like it, great little "fish and chips with a twist" thing for lunch once, and not bad for the money. It always seems a bit quiet though, would be a shame if it went under due to lack of custom.
-
Pierre Bistrot is part of a chain and the majority of the food will be the equivalent of ready made boil in the bag.

very good. both for lunch and evening stuff. it's never been full when i've been. not sure why. loads better than some places.

Yeah - OK, nothing sparkling. Went for the "long weekend" option, available on a sunday/monday night. Any 2 courses off the early bird menu and a bottle of house red for 17.90 per person. so thats a bottle of wine each!!, reasonable amount of choice on that menu.
Wine was drinkable, mackerel pate was good, but the rare steak was far to chewy for my liking. Ambiance was quite loud and 'clattery', service a bit slow.
On the whole, fine, good value for money on that deal, but nowt to write home about.

Been twice, 1st time thought it was pretty good, interesting menu but on second visit I was less impressed, think we had the only interesting stuff on 1st visit. Waitress was very nice though ;) Bowie kept dropping stuff so she had to bend down to pick stuff up. Good boy Andy

Need a recommendation for a properly swanky and exquisite restaurant at very late notice this weekend. Dinner tonight or lunch tomorrow. I don't want anywhere stuffy or pompous or too formal - needs to be a relaxed atmosphere - but somewhere with proper luxurious food please. Money no object, I've saved over two weeks food bills courtesy of NHS cuisine, I want to blow all that on one meal for me :)
-
Glad your back on your feet Fiend!
You might have problems booking anywhere at such short notice
I think i'd be tempted to give the Milestone a go: http://www.the-milestone.co.uk/restaurant.asp (http://www.the-milestone.co.uk/restaurant.asp)
-
Thanks B-dawg. Milestone sounds exactly what I was after. Alas they were booked up so we had a change of theme and went to Wasabisabi instead which was nice and a refreshing change.
-
Wasabisabi is great, love the yellow fin tuna.
Glad your out and about and on the mend Fiend.
-
It lives! Got some nice stockings to replace the socks? :)
Glad you are OK.
-
Recommendation for All-Siam, the new Thai place on Eccelesall Rd, next to Spar. Haven't got their license sorted yet, so BYO. Really nice food at a decent price, well presented. I'm not a big Thai fan, but I thought it was excellent. The service is well above what you'd expect in Sheff, though they've only been open 2 weeks so clearly trying v hard. Bit bright, but comfy seats :)
-
Mrs FD took me to the Old Vicarage on Wednesday for my birthday. Given its Michelin star status it's not cheap (£60 fixed price for four courses per head) but the food was fantastic, the winelist extensive and interesting and the service was great. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
-
Went to the Old Vic a couple of times some years back when I still used to earn good money ;)
Like you say, not cheap by any means but the food was totally awesome. Up there with the (also *'ed) Fischers in Baslow. The wine list was pretty scary though, you could certainly get through some serious cash in that department alone.
I was a little put off by the atmosphere, very hushed and formal - was it like that when you went FD?
Also, a friend of mine went once and she had the audacity to order her meat "well done". The waitress loudly exclaimed "one ruined lamb" as she wrote the order down. Now when you're paying those prices you should be able to have your meat how the fuck you like it
Are there any 2 or 3 Michelin starred restaurants in the North? I can't afford it but it'd be worth saving up for as a special treat.
-

Looking at this list (http://www.3starrestaurants.com/michelin-uk-restaurants.asp), there's a 2* in North Lincolnshire, and that's about it.
It is the Winteringham Fields (http://www.winteringhamfields.com): 3 course A La Carte for £75, though their "Menu Surprise" at £79 sounds awesome.
Dream on Bubbs....
-
Last time I was at Fischer's (last September) I thought it had gone down hill a bit. The waitresss' did not have the best english, or any real knowledge of what was being served so a simple question like the provenance of the fish or meat became a bit of a rigmarole. Also they were fucking about with foams, which are tricky coves at the best of times. They were as amuse-bouche but they didn't get right for the mains they put them in. Little bit disappointed all in all.
Rowley's their "pub", in Baslow, however was great.
-
Rowley's their "pub", in Baslow, however was great.
yeah i've been there twice, its well weapon.
-
:agree: Rowley's is great. Nice food, nice atmosphere. Went the other week with a mixed family group (aged 6 to 83) and everyone was happy.
-
I was a little put off by the atmosphere, very hushed and formal - was it like that when you went FD?
It was quiet when we first arrived but was busy by 8'ish which was surprising for a Wednesday. Pretty formal, but the they had a young lad who's training to be the maitre d' who has a friendly manner and loosened the atmosphere a bit.
-
they were fucking about with foams, which are tricky coves at the best of times.
Mrs FD and I went to Juniper in Altrincham a couple of years ago and everything on the menu was foam. It was bloody ridiculous. The menu was very adventurous, the staff untrained and not confident in their chef who trained under Heston but forgot to remember that you're actually supposed to be able to eat the food. Don't bother...
-
since i'm not as sophisticated as you guys i have to keep it real with non-michelin curries. went to zara's last night in crux. best curry i've had in shef, prob by quite a way. tho the waiter let himself down a bit by admitting he didn't know what provenance was
-
the kofta balti for the Shimul is hard to beat up at the norton roundabout... as is their chicken Naga.
-
Anyone been to East and West on Abbeydale? Have heard good reports but interested to here from the UKB gastrognomes........
-
heard they does the good takeaway yes please. keen to try some of dat.
-
had a takeaway from there last week. awesome fucking welles.
-
tho the waiter let himself down a bit by admitting he didn't know what provenance was
did you expect him to be an expert on the south of france?
-
Anyone been to East and West on Abbeydale? Have heard good reports but interested to here from the UKB gastrognomes........
Been there once. More of a take away place or somewhere to go on a first date to see whether she's really interested :-\

That's perfect then coz my missus still isn't sure whether she's interested after 25 years.......
-
Has anyone tried The Saffron Club? (http://www.saffron-club.com/)
 Went last week and go every few months or so. Pretty good curries, the Jingha Puree starter is delicious. Staff are very efficient and polite too.
We went here on Saturday. Got a table at short notice and were really impressed. Lovely food, excellent service and not expensive. Nice one for the recommendation slackers.
-
East and West on Abbeydale?
I wasn't overly keen but that may be down to me being a bit fussy. :-[ It's an interesting menu but most of the pancake type things, of which there are a lot, didn't sound particularly appetising to me, it does seem to get good reviews from others though so don't let me sway your decision.
Definitely agree that it's a takeaway more than a sit in place, unless you are really not bothered about impressing. ;D
-
It's an interesting menu but most of the pancake type things, of which there are a lot, didn't sound particularly appetising to me
personally I tend to go on the taste rather than the sound of the food (crazy idea I know)..... ;)
-
Well obviously, smarty pants, but I can't very well order the whole lot in the hope that something will taste good, can I? :P
-
If you went with me you could, then I could eat all the things that you don't like
-
My mum said the pancake things were poor.
-
If you went with me you could, then I could eat all the things that you don't like
Next time, I will take you. ;)
-
I've had 2 meals from there now. A take away and eaten in.
I've been disappointed both times really.
The second time we went with a Sri Lankan friend who felt the same.
Bollox to em - they've had their chance
-
Anyone eaten at the Milestone? It got a mention a page or so back but no real feedback. Had a great curry at the Mogul Room (Next to the Porters) on Saturday. I never went to whatever it used to be called but Mrs Obi said it wasn't anything special. This time it was all very tasty.
-
Anyone eaten at the Milestone? It got a mention a page or so back but no real feedback.
Check page 4. ;)
-
:agree: Not sure I'd rush back. Fish curry was quite good, Biriani ok, but not earth-shattering and most of those who had the pancake thingies were underwhelmed. So, maybe 4/10?
-
it was utter toss...
Further, I had two takeaways a couple of weeks ago and they were also delicious. The rice (egg rice??) was tasty enough to be a meal in itself...
-
Now I getting confused , what is Fiend referring to? Maybe if we are 'leapfrogging' references we could as a 're:[restaurant name]' before commenting. :please:
-

I thought this too, but then I realised I could use links that are in the quoters name/date to go straight back in the thread to what PaulB is calling "Utter toss" and look a few posts above (in this case one).
Its Ashoka.
That said it would be far easier if people gave the context your are suggesting :)
-
I thought we were still talking about East and West :-\
Is East and West still good then?
-
Now *I*'m confused myself!
-
I thought we were still talking about East and West :-\

I think not, though I am only reading the evidence on the thread which agrees with my view. ;D
I think the general opinion is so so verging on not great.
-
Gotta give a big up to Thai @ The Travellers, a bit out of town in Holmesfield. Went there last night and have a very nice meal including a fine beef curry with the best and fluffiest coconut rice I've ever eaten. The total for 3 people, all with starters, mains, rice and a drink each came to £55 which is about nothing for a good quality meal for 3!
-
taybarns @ tankersley, anyone?
-
Yo Bubba and mods. This thread is spreading out of Sheffield; and quite rightly so. is there a way that we can write stuff up about places to eat that makes it easier to search? I mean, like maybe write town, venue, date and then opinion? does another format work better? I am aware that other threads exist about eating and that, but you get my drift?
-
Holmsfield is Greater Sheffield district, word.
-
Re:- East and West
The Dhosas (the pancake things) and accompaniments were really good when I ate in, (my comparative reference here is Hansa's in Leeds which is one of the best Indian veg restaurants in the country).
As takeaways they don't work so well (tend to wind up bent and mushy).
The big problem with little places like this is that they start out full of integrity and hope, and tail-off in response to indifference, and probably, the shouty late night racism of a proportion of their customers.
It certainly has been good, the people doing the cooking are capable, so maybe a little constructive criticism (so un-British I know) might get them back on track.
South Asian cuisine is still a rarity up here I was chuffed to find some wel prepared and presented so I'd not give up on them just yet... I can feel tomorrows tea coming on.
-
We went to Dosanj - West One on Saturday evening, mainly because we'd not planned on going out so hadn't booked anywhere and it was the first place we went that had a table straight away (I was hungry).
It was ok. Slightly odd in some ways and I was going to struggle to explain it until I saw this review which sums it up perfectly.
http://www.thestar.co.uk/restaurants/Dosanj-Indian-Restaurant-Sheffield-S1.5500074.jp (http://www.thestar.co.uk/restaurants/Dosanj-Indian-Restaurant-Sheffield-S1.5500074.jp)
It still feels a bit like a work in progress but, unlike the reviewer, we spoke to the owner who seemed really helpful and attentive (if stressed). Interesting.
-
Worth mentioning EatSheffield (http://www.eatsheffield.com/) as a potentially useful resource (although I suspect the discerning
palate wallet of UKB denizens is more reliable).
-
We went to Aroma on London Road last night to use our voucher for 2 main meals (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,13002.0.html). The place that used to be Boat World. It is huge and was very empty. The food and service were fantastic. Mrs S and I both agreed that it was the best Indian we'd had for a long time.
Pickles with the popadoms were nicer than usual
Starter was cod fried in a light pakora type batter with a tamarindish dipping sauce - ace.
Mains were
- the mixed grill, perfect chicken on the bone, pieces of chicken coated in grated paneer (works well), spicy kebab things and gorgeous lamb chops that had been well marinated in something very tasty with a spicy sauce on the side and a salad that had had some effort put into it.
- ginger chicken; very very good, not greasy at all and a bit different to the usual chicken curries
Peshwari naan was light, tasty with just the slightest hint of butter to it.
The staff were very attentive and helpful without being in your face. When he brought the bill, the waiter had already knocked off the price of the meals covered by the voucher because he had noticed it when we came in
Total would have been £38 for food and beers for 2 (£20 after voucher for mains) - good value.
Unfortunately I can't see them lasting much longer; on a Saturday night they were probably at less than 10% capacity.
-
Did you get any mints?
-
after eights
I've just been reminding Mrs Starfish about our descending the fancy staircase in the style of Brucie and Tess. I started this game and since she was laughing so much I kept doing it. The staff looked a bit confused. No one complained though.
-
Lagers, re Aroma, I went there week or so ago with a few lads and thought it was excellent, but gave it four months to live, it's simply too big and they've spunked too much cash on the fit out (unless it's a massive front for money laundering / hawala banking),
The numbers just don't make sense.
-

Exactly what I said last night.
I'd be interested to know how the kitchen is run. Seems like they spend plenty on decent ingredients. I hope they pay the chef(s) what they are worth.
Candy Town down the road is a similar size and does fine; maybe they're aiming at a similar long term plan.
-
The basic rule used to be that your price needs to be 330% of the cost of the ingredients so they're probably ok on that front, it's just that that rule is predicated on a reasonably full resturaunt.
Let's say on the night we were there there were 20 people eating and spent £15 each, say £300.
There were three waiting staff and I would assume 2 in the kitchen, so 6 hours at £6 per hour x 6 = £216
Ok so let's say the food and beer was £4 per head, £80 well that means they're looking at a hell of a loss when you consider their wastage, bills, licensing costs, PRS, council tax and then the cost of the building + refit.
If they were 80% full 80% of the time the numbers would probably work. In short there's either something else going on or someone's a total fuktard and in the current climate I can't see anyone lending for a project like this and I can't imagine it's the owner's own money.
In short hawala is the most likely answer.
-
we went to aroma on sat night.the food was mediocre at best.i know the guys who own it.they used to have vijays and have had cpo put on 2 previous places resulting in shit loads of wonga from sheff cc,hence the bling fit out
-
Holler - anyone been to the Maharaj indian on Commonside? Years ago this was a very decent curryhouse called the Tajak which must have closed in about 2003/4. Then it had a vague look of a place which was being constantly refurbished for the next half a decade, they even put a new sign up and I once saw new tables and chairs, decors etc about 4 years back, and licensing application notifications on local lamp-posts, but for some reason it never reopened. Almost looked like a front for an islamist terrorist cell or something - maybe they were just filming the new chris morris film.
But it seems that it has finally reopened this last summer (I didn't notice cos I don't live there now). Has anyone been? We're going somewhere for a meal tomorrow night, I'm tempted to try it for old times sake but would hate to be disappointing. Don't get out for meals a lot these days so don't want to waste a trip out, but its always good to go somewhere "new". Anyone?

tajak pathia made a massive presence on my student debt back in the day...

Nah, I still reckon it's a hawala front. Numbers don't work regardless of the fit out.

Just about to head out and try Baan Thai, hope its good.

Not as good as Inter Siam further along London Rd

nice enough, nothing amazing. Ruined slightly by the saturday nighters who were obviously going on to West St. after.

It seems to be Italian / Indian. Curious. Its not like its "fusion" food either. It is either pizza or a curry, seems a bit odd. Whenever I walk past it seems to be dead as well, I don't really take that as a good sign. I think Rajput has taken over as the local Indian.
-

Inter Siam mentioned by Lagers is the best we've tried so far.
-
odd day.we walked from home to the cricket.good pint decided too busy.went to the crown totley.closing down today no fod we were told.back to cricket wait an hour for table.by this time totally pissed and not noticed that a standard average in the eating roast beef lunch 16 quid.
never again
-
That's a real shame that the Crown is closing down.
Do you know if that's permanent ?
-
I popped into The Crown - on Friday last week. Phil was due to leave yesterday.
Phil the lad who took over around August last year - basically can't make any money out of the place. He hasn't drawn a wage for ages. He's been under-written by his Father and they can't get it to work - the only month's he made money were August and September.
The main problem seems to be the rent and beer prices that he is charged up front - which mount to £6K. He has to pay this to 'Punch Inns' - who charge him about double what it would cost you and I to buy a barrel of beer direct from the Brewery. I paid £80 ish quid for 9 galloons from Bradfield Brewery for a wedding 18 months ago - he'd be charged £150 for the same, despite having a regular order.
Apparently Punch are somewhere near £400 million in debt - and won't change the rent or beer prices.
They are sending some management team in today and due a meeting with Phil and his Father- but I don't think they are interested in flushing any more money away on it. Punch will only sell the place for £400K and Phil reckons it can only work as a business if he could buy it for £250K.
I expect this is a common story - with the good old boozers slowly disappearing to be replaced by 'trendy pubs' like The Cricket- just up the road.
-
Cheers for the info - as you say its a sad but not uncommon story
-
good job singletrack mag gave me a hipflask to renew my subs this year.
Hmmm.. burning indigestion from powerbars and malt scotch while spining back up abbey lane here we come
:-[

The Pub Co's are a fucking disgrace, talk about the law of un intended consequences, the system that was supposed to end the brewery tie and allow for a paradise of competition has led to the reverse.
The Pub Co's however have a very powerful lobby and seem to be able to pull the wool over the OFT's eyes.
The Sir William in Grindleford used to be a free house but was bought by Greene King for £1m not so long ago, they were as a consequence asking £1100 per week in rent. Now you don't have to be an accountant to know that a small village pub won't be turning over enough to cover this.
-
What do people think is Sheffield's best Thai venue atm?
All Siam on Eccy Rd.
-
Sloper is spot on, I posted something about this before.......
Here. (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10191.msg194270.html#msg194270)
Since then one of the pubs we do the accounts for has gone bust and another is on the way.
-
Just took Mrs Obi and Mini-Obi down to the Milestone in Shef to catch their early bird menu. Highly recommended, their cool with kids before 7 and we had the side room to ourselves, although the main room was busy. Starter, Main and a glass or wine or pint of ale for £12. Bargain.
-
What do people think is Sheffield's best Thai venue atm?
Inter Siam mentioned by Lagers is the best we've tried so far.
Still the top one for me, checked out Thai Punna (http://www.thaipanna.co.uk/rest/index.html) (owned by the same people as the shop Thia Panna (http://www.thaipanna.co.uk/)). Food was nice, but nothing stand out. Really let down by service which was slow (they missed a trick as I could easily have drunk more than the two bottles of beer I was served in the time we were there, still kept the bill down).
Back to Inter Siam (or Siam Inter, never sure which it is) next time for me.
-
Me and my lady friend went to Baan Thai a few days ago. Both eat a vegetarian meal and we both felt pretty rough later on, my girlfriend ended up being sick.
The food was really good, but the nausea thing ruined the night.
Was it Baan Thai's fault? Hard to tell. Just thought I would let you know.
Something similar happened last year when we went to Aagrah in Leopold Square. Ordered a vegetarian Thali for both of us and both ended up being sick later that night. I figure they used up any remaining vegetarian curry they had left over on us even if it was a bit questionable. Thali in England seems like a convenient way to get rid of old food.

Best start including some meat in your diet then! :P

Not a restaurant but I'm not quite sure it deserves a place in the Knowledge thread yet...The Sheffield Tap.
As Nat was working over in Warrington yesterday I thought I'd meet her at the station for a swift half.
The Tap is nice inside, you'd hardly notice it was there from the street side. The range of beers on tap is good, the range of bottles is ridiculously good (four or five sides in the menu).
Prices and rather average Thornbridge stuff was the sticking point for me. I haven't been to the Sheaf or the Rising sun recently for a price comparison but a pint of Jaipur set me back 3 squids and a pint of Timmermans Kriek was a whopping £5.60. The timmermans however was very nice, so was the apple bocq and the Sierra Nevada pale. Various bottles were also sampled based purely on bottle and label. She's working over that way again tonight :beer2:
-
Nice one on the heads up. I didn't know about this place.
Another vote for Inter Siam from me btw.

£3:60? I hope you kept the glass.
-
That'll get you 3 pints of Sam Smiths at the Crown in Glossop. They do lack national rail links though. And you have to go to Glossop.
-
Best start including some meat in your diet then! :P
I'm not vegetarian, I just don't eat meat if I can't guarantee it hasn't suffered to make it onto my plate. Seems reasonable to me.
-
Mmmmm the taste of pure delicious suffering, nom nom nom.
I once had the special honey beer in the Sheaf that was £5 a pint, but believe me it was worth that, a truly awesome beer experience.
-
a few of the bottles in the tap were of the honey variety... I can't say I wasn't tempted.
-

London is london
Sheffield is Sheffield
...BUT, yes I'm always horrified when we stay with Nats family and thats only darn Watford.
Just finished dinner at Siam Inter.
I don't really think there's much between it and Baan. At both we ordered set menu's and both had strong points and weak points. Cost was roughly the same. Service was impeccable at both, what makes siam Inter stand out to the UKB massif?
-
Aroma now bust, it seems that they weren't running a big hawala / ML house just a good curry house on fantasy finances.
-
Went for Sunday lunch at Moran's (http://www.moranssheffield.co.uk/) last week - really nice as always.
-
Went to the Milestone last night. The pub was packed but luckily they could fit us in upstairs. We hadn't booked and the wait in the pub was 20 minutes so we were glad to sneak in upstairs. The service and food was great although I wasn't full after 2 courses (£24 - I have a large appetite) and none of the desserts took my fancy so slightly disappointing. On the plus side they had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in bottles. :beer1:
-
Well in contrast; I ate in the Milestone last night downstairs... and it was appalling.
We skipped starters and just went for bread and olives followed by:
Open Steak Sandwich with Creme Fraiche Horseradish Sauce and Rought Cut Chips
and for myself:
Fishermans pie
Nats dish was ridiculously chewy. Spoke to the waitress when she asked how our food was and she told us "Its meant to be chewy I think but i'll ask the chef"... She then came back 5 minutes later and told us "yes, it is meant to be chewy its the cut", when asked what cut it was she said it was from the diaphragm. Now forgive me if I'm wrong but aren't chewy cuts more appropriate for slow cooking? The chips had been re-heated and were in a huge bowl just up by the loo's. No sauce present either.
My fishermans pie consisted almost entirely of potato. The seafood I got was gritty, I thought it was a one off so spat that bit out and moved on. The next mouthful was the same and the next. We both left hungry and a bit fed up feeling we'd paid a little too much for a poor meal out.
The cocktails were good and the bellevue kriek was a nice alternative to the Timmermans I get at the Tap but beyond drinks I'm not going back to this place.
-
... "yes, it is meant to be chewy its the cut", when asked what cut it was she said it was from the diaphragm. Now forgive me if I'm wrong but aren't chewy cuts more appropriate for slow cooking?
You are 100% correct about the "chewy" cuts being more appropriate for slow cooking. I must add that I am somewhat confused about which cut it was supposed to be as well - are you sure she said the diaphragm?
-
Ate at the newly refurbished Cross Sythes in Totley last weekend. Standard pub fare really but the food was ok and the 2 courses for £10 menu very reasonable. The only downside was the complete absence of seasoning but only I seemed bothered by that.
Several beers on tap, I only tried the yummy Moonshine Pale Ale, father-in-law had the Mild which he also liked.
Service was a bit off, not poor as such, just too many staff constantly asking for your order, is everything ok, etc. Then getting themselves mixed up and not bringing drinks that had been ordered, coffee brought out before desserts. Put that down to teething problems.
Looks like they've stepped up in competition to the Cricket and on first testing could well take some trade away, they're certainly much cheaper and the burger, fish n chips and sos n mash were all of comparable quality.
-
Christ. For a moment there I thought you meant the Cross Scythes in Meersbrook. God that's an awful pub. Don't go there. Ever.
-
diaphragm?
100% - I couldn't think of a 'Steak' cut from that area either ;D
Thats why I didn't bother pointing out the grit in my dish, I'd no doubt get told its because fish live near sand or some other crap.

£3.60 is a bargain if you can close your eyes in Sheffield and make believe you're in Yosemite.
Do they sell King Cobra as well ? the true king of beers ..
-
steak pie in the grouse was top. With the kids meal you get a fab lolly afterwards which Ellie really enjoyed (kids love that sort of stuff) and everyone else was really jealous of
-

This is precisely the problem though Paul. Not directing a dig at you, I've done it before myself - 'was everything OK sir?' - 'yes, lovely thanks' - when it was in fact pish that should never have left the kitchen. Especially Peak pubs - loads of passing trade, tourists etc. who won't be back anyway or aren't bothered enough to complain because they're in the Peak having a nice time.
Had a quick meal at the Ashford Arms tonight en route to Buxton - it was OK, but I won't be making a special point of returning...
-
I have to admit I'm fairly bad at complaining but when you point out something thats wrong and get a 'its supposed to be like that' response you're left with the decision of making a bit of a scene whilst correct them thus ruining the night out or not, I'll vote with my feet.
I've had the same response at Thyme when I ordered something with figs in it. It came with the figs replaced with pears, I pointed this out and got "oh yeah, you noticed that"... What do you do with that? They might as well say so what.
At the end of this week I'd had my once a week hissy fit when Waitrose refused to serve me alcohol (I had ID) because my Mrs. stood next to me, didn't. I kept asking how they were going to sell the bottle of red to the middle aged woman with her teenage son as he didn't have ID. She just kept repeating "its policy", "its policy" and then told me to pick it up and go back around whilst Nat waited in the car and she'd happily sell it to me. WTF?
-
100% - I couldn't think of a 'Steak' cut from that area either ;D
I was a butcher for 12 years and like you I have no idea what could be classed as s "steak cut" from that area.
Thats why I didn't bother pointing out the grit in my dish, I'd no doubt get told its because fish live near sand or some other crap.
I worked with a guy many years ago when I was butchering and he was out for a meal one night - ordered some sort of steak and when it was served it wasn't what it was supposed to be so he complained. Long story short the chef came out and explained the anatomy of a cow and where the alleged cut had come from to which Oz replied "I have been a butcher since before you were born so I have a fair degree of knowledge on bovine anatomy. Furthermore I butchered 12 hind quarters this afternoon and I can guarantee that the steak you have sold me is not what you claim it to be." The word pwned springs to mind... ;D

We had a celebratory lunch at The Forum yesterday (Raf chose the venue as we were walking past) and I was really impressed with the service, especially as it became rammed shortly after we got there. Food was really nice, just what you expect but good quality and does what it says on the tin.
The nice part was that Raf had already had a bit of lunch so just wanted some chopped red pepper and a couple of rashers of bacon. The waitress went and checked with the chef and after rechecking with us that we didn't mind paying for it as if it was a bacon sandwich said no problem. She was really helpful and friendly with him too, these things make a massive difference when dining with a three year old.
When I got the bill of £39.95 (we'd had a £20 bottle of wine) I gave her £50 and said to bring me a fiver back as I had no change to tip her. She brought back £15 saying that I'd given her a £15 tip and surely that was too much. It took me two goes to explain the maths but the point being that she was doing her best not to rip me off. As I say, the little things count for a lot.

Went to Tin Tin last night (situated behind Waitrose on London Road - formally called Tin Po) and ordered from the Chinese based menu. Got some really interesting dishes. Of note the poached pork belly and crushed garlic starter was very good even though it was spicier than mentioned due to the puddle of chilli oil it was served with.
The beef fillet, fish fillet and beef belly hotpot dishes for mains were nice. The poached beef stew would've probably fed two which was tamed for us and still quite hot but the stand out dish was the Chongqing Chicken with chilli's. Rather suspicious cuts of chicken still on the bone, (unbeknown to me until it was pointed out, I just thought it was gristle) battered and fried served with lots and lots of red chilli's, fresh peppercorns and coriander. The whole dish was very dry and the chilli's were very warm. I had about 10 and sweated more than a vindaloo! I left a few............

If you wanna try some weird hot shit get yourself down there.

Thought I'd posted this photo but it doesn't seem to be there now. I'll try again. Plate of dried hot chilli's anyone?(http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/94466748.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1272873780&Signature=w8L9AJdxvVl1r6fwVBCKKEgxc7I%3D)

I'm not sure what you've tried to link to there but I certainly can't fix it!
That place sounds worth a visit.

Looks like a dish for slackers!

Went to Fischers at Baslow for the first time today. Mrs Obi sorted out a Guardian offer that got us a lunch of 3 courses for £20. Pretty impressed, a couple of students were there with there mothers for an end of exam meal so we we're even the youngest! Food was mostly excellent, although the chef does seem a bit keen on using 'foam/mousse' as we had one type or another on each course! That said the pea one was exceptional. All in pretty good, and a nice place to celebrate our first scan of Mini-Obi MkII
-
Dosanj last Friday was mediocre, a touch unloved inside, and reeeeaalllyyyy overpriced for what is essentially, standard one pot curry fare, in spite of the scallops / monkfish etc. on offer.
I was very glad to be getting £30 off the bill courtesy of Charity Unleashed vouchers, I'd have been mortified otherwise.
Couldn't fault the friendliness of the waitress though, she was really nice and got a decent tip regardless of the grub...
-
Emailed the milestone regarding our shit meal to which they responded saying they'd fix it if we were willing to try again, we responded ages ago saying we would. No reply
-
I heard that the Milestone was really good? I was considering a pilgrimage, but maybe I won't bother.

Pretty much my sentiments too (we used the Charity Unleashed vouchers to visit too).

It's still going then? Quite surprised. Posted about it here (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,9845.msg225326.html#msg225326) a while ago.

read my last post on this if you need clarification.
-
Yeah I went back and found it. Sounds very disappointing, particularly the apparent stupidity of everyone involved in your evening and the lack of any response to your complaint. It makes them seem kind of arrogant, as though they are above your criticism as they are becoming increasingly popular.
I read a Jay Rayner article in the Guardian a while ago that made it sound good, that's all. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/may/23/jay-rayner-restaurant-review-milestone-sheffield (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/may/23/jay-rayner-restaurant-review-milestone-sheffield)

I've eaten there a few times before (as I live 2 mins away from the Foundry) and had some ok/middling meals (never tried the upstairs). I did have Brunch there on my birthday and that was pretty darn good (Eggs Benedict/Florentine). One thing is for sure they do know how to fix a good cocktail, try the Hibiscus Mojito or a Leffe done right (the latter isn't ideal for these temps!).
-
we've have had a pretty good meal down stairs and a pretty average meal upstairs. sounds like they have some off days, or a different chef who is not up to scratch.
-
There's a Food Festival on in town today (presumably all weekend), some good food by the winter gardens etc.
Worth a look for anybody keeping half an eye on this thread.
-
As I hadn't seen my other half for a while we popped out to Kitchen on Eccy road tonight.
The food was fantastic:
Fish cake with a poached egg and curried mayo to start
Followed by duck breast, slow cooked leg, celeriac pure and figs
(she had - Chicken and ham terrine
Herb crusted chicken on a chorizo and bean stew)
Everything I tasted was great although my duck dish would have been better minus the breast and plus another leg. Tasting the two side by side revealed slow cooking as the true winner.
The service was leisurely but not annoyingly slow. Cost was middling I'd say, it could get pricey depending on what you have (one starterwas £12).
This is what Thyme used to be (you can however book) and no longer is.
how is homemade at Nether edge cross roads?
-
She really likes Homemade at netheredge cross roads. Very nice, mainly veggie.

good arrows word, I've had my eye on this (30secs from our gaff) but not got round to going yet. might check it out cos we're due a meal out.
-
Interesting, off to Kitchen for a works do next week, was reading some good reports online so good to hear people agree on here. Will report back.
-
hope I've got it right.
-
Ha ha. It's on our list after I explained to the Mrs that ultrapicky Bennett had recommended it. ;)
-
Went to Kitchen for the second time last night, excellent meal, I had whitebait followed by amazing rump of lamb, Mrs Obi had goats cheese tart with a whole round slice of goats cheese on top and cod wrapped in parma ham. Then we shared the white choc cheesecake and the cheese board. Service was excellent. The only minor thing I would criticise is the bread could be better. Interestingly on a review site they rave about the bread board but when I had it on my first visit it was pretty average, same last night on the cheese board. That said don't put it off you ordering the cheese board, they pick some amazing cheeses and their home-made chutney is pretty special too.
On another note, Jonty (previously impressed us when he was at West10) has opened a Cafe on Sharrowvale road, looks nice will be testing it out soon.
-
Another vote for Kitchen. Went there for our anniversary and was very impressed. Subdued surroundings and amazingly textured meals.
-
Went to Kitchen tonight for Ms Bubb's birthday spurred on by recommendations in this topic...
Thumbs up from me - haddock fishcakes with hollandaise sauce and poached egg starter, cod with bacon crust main and the cheese for afters were all extremely good. Great food in a cozy, unpretentious atmosphere. Will definitely be going back again.
-
Just had lunch in Jonty's Cafe on Sharrowvale road. Big thumbs up from us, not over priced, tasty food and cakes. Good all round.

the Milestone was featured on Ramsays latest programme, it hasn't gone out yet.
-
the Milestone was featured on Ramsays latest programme, it hasn't gone out yet.
It was shown earlier this week - and somehow beat a place in Kent (which has 2 Michelin Stars), in the best English restaurant class, to go into the final for best restaurant.
I've been once to the upstairs - which was good, not outstanding. The one time I've eaten downstairs it was shit. The mystery guest reviewer on Ramsay's programme experienced the same in the downstairs - poorly cooked food. The milestone is certainly not serving up Michelin starred standard food in my opinion.
I think Ramsay gave the Milestone the win as it's run by a group of lads who he reckons are like him, plus I don't think it was all down to the food. The Kent place got a bit overwhelmed by 30 dinners arriving in one go.
There must be better 'English restaurants' - from what I've heard Moran's and Kitchen in Sheffield sound better places to eat, so in the rest of the country there must have been better contenders. I suspect a lot of better restaurants turn down being on these types of programmes as they don't need the business this type of thing must generate, or fear being made to look rubbish.
-
I agree entirely I just thought I might have made a mistake. The dish from the Kent place looked to be in a different league so I was a bit shocked by the outcome.
They're yet to come good on their promise of our refund meal since offering it to us which I think seals their fate customer service wise.
Yet to try Moran's but I (we) like Kitchen a lot.

Has anybody eaten at Bragazzi's restaurant?
It's just down from their cafe - and looks good. It's only open Thursday - Saturdays, and it's bring your own wine.
-
The Milestone's won this too:

It would have to be seriously good for those prices, something not quite right charging £5 starter/£15 for a main/£5 dessert and not having a license. And 6:30-8:30?! what gives? Do they want to be taken seriously? Looks a bit like their sandwiches, really nice, but just that little bit too expensive.

Mrs Fatdoc & I have finally got an evening out.... after a search of this thread... it's Kitchen on saturday... cool! :great:

Seems like a very sound plan and to be honest not many people want to sit down in the UK after 20:30, particularly outside of the main areas.
As for BYO it means you can take a bot. of £20 wine in and get £20 worth of wine rather than one that would retail at £6 and the rest being markup.

True and true, although I was more surprised at the 6:30 end of things, and the way it was written made it appear they close and 8:30 and if you were there much past 9pm they would start looking at their watches, sweeping up around you and muttering things in italian under their breath. >:( I'm probably wrong and you could merrily neck bottles of your own wine til the early hours but it's still a bit odd for a restaurant to state a closing time like that.
-
Is it supposed to mean last sitting at 8.30PM? That would make more sense to me but that doesn't necessarily mean it has any validity in the grand scheme of things.
-
We finally got round to going to Kitchen on Saturday night. Can only echo what everyone else has said. Very nice indeed, we will return.
-
has anyone tried the Wig + Pen since the Milestone took over?
It seems I'm destined to be there in a few weeks anyway but I'd be interested to know (there were some nice aroma's when I last drove past)!

yes- same menu as the milestone, smaller portions seemingly so they fit in the roof slate they are served on. I prefer the milestone for atmosphere and aesthetics too

Only two and a half years later, we're going here this evening.

Wasn't sure which thread to put this in as it's a pub but not in the Peak. Anyway, the other weekend we went to The Prince of Wales (http://www.restaurant-guide.com/the-prince-of-wales-2.htm) on Ecclesall road for Sunday lunch.
It was the first time we'd been since it was refitted last year and they've done a very nice job. In short, the food and service were excellent and they have a good range of lagers and real ales. Kid friendly, not as expensive as The Chequers and better than the last time we went there it was the best pub meal I've had in a very long time. We will be going again.
-
I've been peering in every evening on the way back from the Peak, the refit does indeed look good but I convinced myself it'd just be another plastic pub inside. Time to stop perhaps.
-
Yeah we were heading Peakwards and decided to try it on the offchance. Only had the Sunday dinners so can't comment on the rest of the menu but it looked quite interesting. Raf's ice cream was bloody nice too.....
-
Went to Chez Lahlou (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=CAF&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial&biw=1920&bih=795&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=chez+lahlou+sheffield&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=chez+lahlou&hnear=Sheffield&cid=0,0,9944426087033599756&ei=BVvCTaS5NI6whQfD6OyzBQ&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBkQnwIwAA) last night and was very impressed.
Starters were exquisite chicken wings/thighs, scallops and garlic bread (its the future after all), and they were generous portions to say the least. Most starters were in the range of £4-8.
For main I had the Red Snapper in piquant sauce special and it was delicious....and huge, only managed a a meager side portion of veg. Wife had a lovely (and again massive) steak that was cooked to perfection. Others had Beouf en Cruet (?sp ) and salmon. Mains were £10-20 (although most were >£15).
No desert as I never eat them, and we were all stuffed from starters and main. Apparently the chef has made one desert in five years as so few people want one after their main.
Did I mention the portions were HUGE?
Recommend checking it out if looking for a nice meal out.
-
..... Beouf en Cruet (?sp ) ...
beouf en croute?
-
Thats the one, essentially beef wellington for one (well two really given the portion size).
-
Apparently the chef has made one desert in five years as so few people want one after their main.
The portions are enormous, too big really. Haven't been for a few years but I couldn't finish two courses even. A lot of folk have left with doggy bags every time I've been there. Daft really they could increase their profit masiively by reducing portion size but the food would still be value for moeny at the current price. Maybe a French thing? Nice food whatever.
-
We went to the Kashmiri Aroma (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g186364-d1846792-Reviews-Kashmiri_Aroma-Sheffield_South_Yorkshire_England.html) at Woodseats last week.
Equal to the best Indian meal I've had in Sheffield and not expensive. It's where the Blue Room Brasserie used to be which is a lovely venue and the food and service were excellent. Highly recommended.
-
It must have been the heat yesterday that led me back to the Milestone (it is VERY local to me after all)...
I'm pleased to report that the meal was absolutely stunning this time, great service, the only slight gripe I'd have is that some of the mains need sides and others don't (you can't tell from the menu), and they're pretty stingy with the bread that accompanies starters.
I'd even go as far as to suggest that it just tipped Kitchen. Both are pricey though.
If anyone is a regular at Zeugma, and getting a little bored of the standard Adana etc. take a look further down at the Guvec. Fantastic.
A few weeks ago (N.B. I should be fatter) we were in Bhaan Thai which was also fantastic. IMO it beats the two offerings on London Rd. easily. However I'm yet to try All-siam on Eccy rd?
-
All Siam is great, and is under the same ownership as the Bhaan Thai so suit you equally as well.
-
Just thought I'd mention Radhuni on London Road. Very very good curries and lovely people running it. BYO as well so a cheap night out.
-
massive up for Kitchen from me & mrs FD. all been said before.. but he place still has it.

Does FD know?

Oi,
i registered here first..

Has anyone been here?
www.greenheadhouse.com (http://www.greenheadhouse.com)
It's my birthday and as my Wife and I have not been out for decent meal since the birth of our son, we're looking for something good / abit different.
We originally thought of the The Old Vicarage - but that's been booked out.
Any other ideas for a good meal appreciated in The Sheffield region. We've probably ruled out Kitchen, Milano, Morans, Fischers etc. However there doesn't appear to be much choice.
-
I don't know anything about the place sorry. Just can't resist pointing out the quote:
Our house is a 17th century cottage secluded in a walled garden even though we are in Chapeltown.
;)

We went a few weeks back. My main was pretty good (Ped Yang), hers was mediocre. I didn't think it was as good as All Siam overall.

Agreed, it's ok, but All Siam is better I reckon.
-
Thanks for the replies
I shall present her with the evidence so that we can make an informed decision - All Siam or Patoo - I suspect that the final decision will depend on what's on their lunchtime menus
-
massive up for Kitchen from me & mrs FD. all been said before.. but he place still has it.
just thought i'd mention the fact that i had a dreadful meal at kitchen. massive disappointment. wine was ok though.
-
any more details Pritch?
-
was a while ago but maybe i was expecting too much after all the hype. i had steak and chips and it was seriously underwhelming in almost every department. if a place can't do that right what hope is there. mrs p had some fish which was well over done and some other vegetable nonsense. was supposed to be a big night out for us and we left feeling fairly demoralised.
-
Thanks for the replies

Ended up at Patoo on 6/11 due to it's negligible distance from The Porter Brook (we were at the pub not the actual brook) - only people in there, so great service, good chat with the staff about the menu and good food. We got stuff that the staff recommended - can't remember what, but it was all good and they did us a different £deal to the ones on the menu. Guess they didn't have a choice with us as the only people there. Prices looked reasonable anyway.
Beer was, as always, not cheap; but I do like a bottle or two of Singha with my Thai food.
-
Just thought I'd mention Radhuni on London Road. Very very good curries and lovely people running it. BYO as well so a cheap night out.
Ate here last night. It seemed 'ok' at the time but by 9 Nat was complaining about feeling rough (without a drop of alcohol) and anyone hugging her to say happy new year ran the risk of being vomitted on, like the pavement on the way home.
-
never had any bother in that respect and i have eaten there upwards of ten times. unlucky bub.
-
Been meaning to go to Morans (http://www.moranssheffield.co.uk/) for ages. In fact since travs recommended the place on the first page of this thread. Anyway, we went on NYE and it was first class. For the price the food, wine and service were unbelievable, we're going again soon.
-
on my rather frequent visits to the adjacent bike shop i have thought.. yep I'm old, but at least i dont have to take my trophy wife out to tea whilst my kids and ex wife screw me... or did I read the cliental wrong?
-
Been a couple of times, it was really good and not snooty.
-

Maybe you share my cynicism - guessing it's a Sunday afternoon, when the place does from the doorway view appear to be full of them....
-
No it was really relaxed and we took the sprog with us. It was the early sitting and there were quite a few (well behaved) kids in there. Didn't feel snobby at all and the woman who runs it (her husband is the chef) was really friendly. The fixed price menu was unbelievably reasonable at £25 for 3 courses and the house Sauvingnon Blanc equally surprising at £13.50 a bottle. I can't recommend it enough.
-
nice, I'll spend less in there than in the bike shop for sure
-
Mrs Starfish and friends are going out 7.30pm tonight (Sheffield). They would like somewhere cheapish, maybe where you can take your own wine. I suggested Noodle Inn for them, but she's not in the mood.
Any ideas?
cheers
-
Papa Ciccios at crosspool is BYOB and very good. Not sure on prices. Phone in advance though cos it gets busy.
-
La Terrazza on Sharrow Vale Road at Hunters Bar is a decent little BYOB Italian too if that's what they're after.
Or Kitos up our way. Also standard, perfectly good Italian, also BYOB.
-
As you say Kito's is fairly standard - but I do love it.
It does have a local charm, dead friendly and the home made Lemon cheesecake is very good
-
thanks kids
I've passed on your suggestions
-
Anyone who's not been to the Caspian on abbeydale road should do. Persian food (which to my mind may be the tastiest food in the world), at reasonable prices and bring ure own booze (2 quid corkage) or buy beers there. my fave's are kashkar baddam joon as a starter, kind of abergine dip, spinach yoghurt, and the fish stew for a main, though friends rave about the kebabs. You won't finish it so you can have it wrapped up to take away for dinner tmrw :)
-
rajput is byob. Though the food is just standard indean really - not at all bad.
-

Has anyone been to the Devonshire Arms at Middle Handley (http://www.devonshirearmsmiddlehandley.com/)?
Is it a proper restaurant or gastro-pub fare?

Me and Ms Bubbs just been for a late Valentine's celebration at Moran's - spot on, my taste buds have been left quivering. Not cheap but nice low-key atmosphere and excellent food.
-
went to Sushi Express (http://sushiexpress.org.uk/index.htm) with work people yesterday evening
between us we had a wide variety of stuff from the menu - all good (I tried some of each dish, of course)
the managers paid for a heap of starters, £50 went a long way
mains were in the £7 to £12 range
soft drinks were overpriced, so I had to drink beer at £2.50 per bottle (Asahi)
service was great, but it was only 5.30pm and so was only 30% full
we've had takeout from there before (it's next door to work and our team leader likes to keep me happy/well fed) and the big Party Platters have been well worth the money - discount for ordering the day before
the menu is a work of art - it is basically a coffee table book with ace photos and plenty of info

Been there a couple of times since it opened and have been impressed with quality, value (never looked at soft drinks prices) and service :2thumbsup:

Just got back from the Butlers Balti. I didn't go when it was at the top of Broad Lane though I'd heard it was good.
The new premises are pretty nice on first glance but there are a few things that need attention like the drink stains on the walls.
Anyhoo the pickle tray and poppadoms were great with 7 different pickles.
Starters were good too. Paneer tikka (too much red colouring as usual though), onion bhajis and aloo chat.
Things were looking good.
The mains were a complete disappointment. The korma looked like sticky toffee pudding and some of the coconut hadn't been thoroughly mixed in. The jalfrezi wasn't hot enough and lacked flavour and the tikka masala was described as tomato soup.
Overall it was alright. Wouldn't recommend or go back.
-
As our local curry house we've been a fair bit (although not at the new premises) and its pretty hit and miss depending on the night. Avoid the standard curries and go onto the specials (Balti Baruchi).
Zeugma 1 has had a re-fit recently, the food remains the same (great) and as an added bonus we were given a round of Turkish tea on the house.
Also for Nats birthday we ended up at Thai Punna with which I was very impressed. Its way way better than Siam Inter (or whatever its now called), and apart from the ambience I think it had Baan Thai beaten too.

Oh for fucks sake. The poppa dims were good and the rest was utter shit, yet it's 'alright'? Did you complain Andrew?
This shit must stop. If food is bad, say so!

Went to Zeugma last week for the first time. (The one next to Harrisons.) Really good we thought.
-
Not sure if mentioned on here but really enjoyed Danishta's on start of Abbeydale opp. Rude Shipyard.
South Indian food. Really tasty. Less Ghee, proper Masala Dosa's some really tasty food. Not your usual ghee, but more coconut based Curry's.
-
rajput is byob. Though the food is just standard indean really - not at all bad.
always found Rajput takeaway to be much better than the restaurant. Though the latter was OK too.

On the theme of Indians, ate out at Nawaab (http://www.nawaabsheffield.co.uk/) on West Street the other week (been there a few times before) as they had an offer on for starter & main with sundry (rice, naan etc.) for £6.95/head available all night Sunday through to Thursday and 17.00-19.00 on Fridays & Saturdays. Having just looked at the site to link to it it appears they have an even better offer on :beer2: :pissed:.
Curries themselves were very tasty, a definite value for money night out.
Have enjoyed Rajput, further along on South Road the Royal Spice (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Indian+south+road+walkley+sheffield&hl=en&client=opera&hs=yG5&rls=en-GB&channel=suggest&prmd=imvns&resnum=9&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=X5NQT__yFpSB8gP88KTvBQ&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=3&ved=0CBgQ_AUoAg) is pretty good too, particularly partial to their Naga curries (although they weren't as hot as I was expecting).
I think the variability in curries is likely down to which chef is in the kitchen on a given night.
-
Was at The Cricket Inn on Friday (traditional pre-comp venue) and complained for the first time. Fishcakes were about 4" thick yet only had enough fish for a 1" or 2" fishcake. Waitress noted it.
Otherewise good, especially the poached eggs on top of the fishcakes.

Not Sheffiled based but its not really worthy of its own thread:
Does anyone know a good pub for food post Roaches climbing? Ideally it would allow dogs (even though the dog in attendance is sized similar to a cat).

It's a strong look:

Went to a wedding reception at the Three Shoes Inn (http://www.3shoesinn.co.uk/) and the food was good (although this was about two and a half years ago, no idea how the normal food compares to that these days). Think they allowed dogs as my friends greyhound was with us.
The Travellers Rest is now the Kinghts Table (http://www.theknightstable.co.uk/), menu looked nice, but not eaten and no idea on dog policy.
Might be some more recommendations in the Peak Pubs -booze & grub (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,9788.0.html).

Lazy trout, meerbrook. Owner is chef/cook. Proper homemade great pub food. Excellent value too. Good beers. Friendly. Fire in winter. Dogs fine. (Paul - am duplicating fb message here as this pub deserves UKB custom - best pub food near roaches i reckon).

Recent eating out experiences:
Moran's - Went for my Mum's birthday last month. Excellent food again, lovely staff and reasonable considering the quality.
The York - Superb. On a par with the best meal I've ever had in a pub.
The Broadfield - OK. After The York and other people's reviews I was expecting a similarly high standard (seeing as they've based it on the same model / similar menu). It was in no way poor, just nothing amazing.
-
The York - Superb. On a par with the best meal I've ever had in a pub.
Went again for my birthday on Monday and just to check that the standard wasn't a one off. Just as good. Every dish fantastic but it's worth going just for the wild boar scotch egg starter. Amazing.
-
I've been there a couple of times and whilst the food was very nice I thought the portion sizes were too small.
I did mention this to them, but I don't think anyone else had a problem with it
-
someone was telling me that its the same people who have the York and the Broadfield. I like them both. Impressive whisky selection in the York.

I thought they were spot on as I was able to trough three courses at lunchtime without feeling unpleasantly stuffed.

Yeah the same people who own the Forum etc.

I only had the one course - but that should be enough
and yes... I am a greedy cunt - well always hungry anyway :)

There's an easy solution to this, do what we did and go for five courses! :2thumbsup: Treated Mrs Obi to their 'Beer & Food night' last week, the title didn't do it justice, five courses of superb food accompanied by a fantastic selection of beers and a cider.

nuthin better with a prickly pear torta out of a taco truck, but it's one of those beers i've never revisted in this country, perhaps afraid of disappointment. It seems i should reconsider.
-
Just had pizzas from Italian Express in Walkley for the first time in a few months. Previously awesome, these were mediocre slop you get everywhere else, arguably worse. Waited ages too, very disappointed. Wondering if it's changed hands recently?
-
heads up / thread resurrection..
Mrs FD and I had a midweek day off work on the same day today, first time in 5 years... with no kids as they are now all at school.
Hit the Angel at holmesfield for lunch. Random decision.
open fire, just enough eating to give an atmosphere without being busy, but felt lively... good service.
we love to eat fish when out... i had turbot and sea trout combo, Mrs FD the halibut... we rarely eat deserts... to hell with it - had nothing else to do. All aspects good, even the coffee was on par.
A superb meal in all respects, Mrs FD got the wining dish.
I'll go back for sure.
BTW the starters looked huge!
-
Good knowledge FD.... A short (probably not that short in actual fact) dog-walk from our house - could be a good venue for a spot of mid-week, kid-free indulgence....
-
:2thumbsup:
-
Anyone now anywhere sheff/peakside that is particulary vegan friendly? But ideally happy to serve the flesh of dead anaimals too?
-
Blue Moon Cafe in Sheffield might do food, I've been recommended their cakes by vegan and non-vegan friends, so they might do a decent lunch or so too, never been myself though.
-
Another top quality meal at the York last night..highlights include the 'Bacon Jam' which is hard to describe but well worth trying, (somewhere between a pate, a savoury marmalade and a chutney, mmm sweet bacony goodness...) and the still warm home-made apple and cinnamon doughnuts dipped in a cream and cinnamon sauce.... :2thumbsup:
-
Still in love with Shimul curry house at norton, schobuzz massala and naga being the sig dishes...
-
I met a few mates for a meal last night outside of Thai Punna to find it closed (is this permanent?). We ended up driving to Siam-inter on Eccy Rd. which really was outstanding, prices were considerably higher than our first destination but then portions were significantly bigger too.
-
Continuing the Thai theme we went to All Siam on Eccy Road on Friday. First time there and I thought it was very good.
Portion size was big, service attentive and some nice amuse bouche bits as well
-
Went to the prince of Wales on Eccy rd the other wk, food wasn't up to much, wine was rank, n service was terrible
-
We couldn't get a table at The Broadfield last night (turned up at 6.30pm) so went to our old regular Thai place next to the post office on London Road - now called The Orchid. Didn't recognize any of the staff. No one seemed to know what they were doing (except the guy behind the bar - he was very good at drinking) and the food was mediocre and more expensive than it used to be.
Even the ornamental fish looked sad
Don't think we'll be going back
-
London rd, everyone bangs on about it for food, its fuckin wank
-
Been to those Turkish places a few times, and always had a great time
:beer2:
-

Any place particularly upset you Dense or do you just object to area as a whole? We still rate Pho68 for both eat in and take away. Like anywhere with a high concentration of restaurants/take aways, there's always going to be some that are better than others.

I think Noodle Inn is great, although it's never going to win any awards the portion sizes are bloody huge which always makes up for any mediocrity
I enjoyed Pho68, the older waiter (manager maybe?) was really rude but to an extent where it was funny, Falty-esque.
-

The other thing I was going to observe in my previous post is that it's funny how impressions of places are often based on a single meal or one bad experience. We have the opposite view of the two places, only had good experiences at Pho68, they are very accommodating when we take the kids there. Whereas we have only been to Noodle Inn twice, once was ok, but once had a very bizarre experience. I had ordered a duck dish and the duck had been chopped into pieces whilst still on the bone. Consequently the dish in my view was inedible as it involved eating around or picking out very sharp shards of bone in every mouthful. We complained and the chef came out and basically ranted at me for about 10 minutes claiming "it's the authentic way to cook it", "if you went to Hong Kong this is the way it is always served", I didn't bother to tell him that I had actually been to Hong Kong a far bit and never had duck served like that. Or that just because something is 'authentic' doesn't mean it's the best way to serve it to the UK public.
I may be imagining it, but I seem to recall he was carrying a large meat cleaver during this conversation!
This was several years ago, and the guy has probably moved on but suffice to say it's consequently not a regular place we go.
-

that's true, but let's all just agree the York is top bollocks.

Yeah anyone who argues against that is just wrong. FACT.

Apart from the portions being too small and the prices too high

Followed up the recs and went last night with family. Nice understated dining area, friendly service. I had the Hake, Ben burger, Tom Thai Fish Cakes, Poppy kids sausage and mash and Sonia Beef. Sonia's beef was a little tough and fatty and the hake portion was a bit small but otherwise food was excellent. Desserts were outstanding especially the pear creme brulee, again too small although the cheese platter was large. The bordeaux was very quaffable. Ace evening. Cheers folks.
-
Agree
Food is good but the portions are too small unless you're a hobbit or summat
For that reason...
-
Needed somewhere to trudge with kids today so walked to Graze Inn on Eccy road. Used to be Champs or some shit bar like that.
http://www.grazeinn.co.uk/welcome.html (http://www.grazeinn.co.uk/welcome.html)
Not especially cheap but the sunday roast was great, huge yorkshire pudding, and the kids desert at £1 was basically the same size as the desert my wife had. Menu looked to have a few interesting things on. Spacious inside, nicely laid out, with plenty of tables with room for pushchairs etc. Apparently midweek kids eat for free - bonus. You can do a lot worse than this place if on eccy road.
-
Interesting. Didn't realise it was one of this lot's ventures:

Don't rate noodle inn at all, plastic food terrible service. Pho68 was a bit strange, first time me n leo had terrible duck but everyone else's food looked good, second time food was ok, service was ridiculous both times.

We wanted to check out the 'Twisted Burger Company' at the Harley, but their introductory half price offer proved too popular so we couldn't get in. With a taste for a burger we decided to check out the 'Mud Crab Diner' on Ecclesall Rd and were generally impressed. Good atmosphere, quite busy. Very accommodating for kids (and clumsy partners who manage to smash a full bottle of ketchup all over the place :slap:). Burgers and fries were generous portions, nicely put together and tasty but not what I'd call outstanding. Slight wait for puddings to arrive but when they did they were worth the wait. Proper freshly cooked 'Churros' doughnuts with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. :2thumbsup:

Churros rule - there's a Mexican place near me that does them and they're so good as a lunchtime snack with a coffee!
Your story about the ketchup reminded me of my Dad, when I was a kid, sat at the dinner table and shaking what he thought was bottle of ketchup with the lid tightly on. Sadly not, the lid had already been taken off and was just resting on. He gave it a fearsome shake, the lid flew off resulting in ketchup up the walls, ketchup on the ceiling, ketchup all over me and my sister...as I remember he also managed to get a fair bit on our cat as well!

Number 7 on the list was good when we went a few months back. Very tasty and a bit different. Authentic. Good service.
Should try some of the others!

Just printed off a voucher for Strava (Leopold Square). It's one of the better chains and we've been reasonably impressed on previous visits. Early evening visits with the kids works well.
http://www.stradaoffers.co.uk/sheffield/countdown_to_summer/ (http://www.stradaoffers.co.uk/sheffield/countdown_to_summer/)
if you print it today 29% off, tomorrow 28% off, get the idea?

Had a very nice meal there a few months back with some good wine too. I can't speak for the value as it was being paid for by a cross-university consortium. I'm not a student at any of the relevant uni's but I wasn't arguing! :alky:

Has anybody been here, and if so is it any good? http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/ (http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/)
They seems pretty on it with being partially gluten free. Anybody been anywhere else good that caters for GF really well? I know Bistrot Pierre etc are good, but non chain preferred if possible. cheers T
-
I eat out with a few gluten free peeps, usually end up at east & west (they use gram flour for everything I think) or wasabi sabi - can't really go wrong with sushi, plus they have gluten free soy sauce if you ask.
-
Has anybody been here, and if so is it any good? http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/ (http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/)
No, but Otto owns the Mediterranean, which people rate (I've enjoyed the food there in the past, just found the service a bit in-yer-face).
-
We went to Viraaj (http://www.viraaj.co.uk/?page_id=24) last weekend. Really good food, excellent friendly service and not expensive.
Mrs S reckoned it was better than Kashmiri Aroma but I'd say it was of similar quality (which is pretty high praise). The chilli naan was amazing.
We may now have the two best curry houses in Sheffield within walking distance of our house. #winning :dance1:
-
we visited The Waggon and Horses by Millhouses Park last night - it's now a Pesto restaurant; serving what is basically tapas dishes with Italian names
reasonable portions
very tasty
reasonable price
12 dishes between 4 of us. best dishes were meatballs (quality meat), beef stew, spicy potatoes, fishcakes
the highlight of the night was the cheesecake (shared one between 2 of us)
oh, yes... they serve Easy Rider
-
Yeah we've been there. It's good and very kid friendly too.
The guy who started the Spanish tapas chain La Mancha sold up a year or two ago for a few million quid.
He had a clause in the deal that said he couldn't start anything new for a certain amount of time and couldn't do Spanish stuff ever. So he sat on the cash for a while and then started doing exactly what he did before but Italian. This is the result.

Anyone been to back of house - think its a resurrection of kitchen?
It's in the same place as kitchen was on Eccy road.
Looking for somewhere for our 5th wedding anniversary - wife needs boring food as 34 weeks pregnant and can't take any spice or large portions!
-
Anyone been to back of house - think its a resurrection of kitchen?
No but a colleague who was a Kitchen regular went a few weeks ago, wasn't massively impressed. Was sold the special seafood starter without being told the price, turned out it was around £27 for a starter!
Think the whole "a place that has no pretense" might be rather ironic.
-
Enjoyed a meal at Vittles Cafe last night. They have started doing a bistro evening menu at weekends. All our food was tasty, and reasonable. If anything starter portions could be smaller! I had the 'smokie' to start and lovely home made meatballs on linguine.
-
Has anybody been here, and if so is it any good? http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/ (http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/)
Hi Toby, me and ky went here the other day and loved it - food was great and the people were really friendly.
-
Well, having found myself staying in a hotel in town on Saturday, had a quick glance at Trip Advisor and ended up going to the #9 restaurant in Sheffield, El Paso.
Holy guacamole.
Worst restaurant experience ever. Short version: 2-hour wait between first arriving and starting to eat. They forgot to bring the starters. Guacamole was inedible (mashed garlic with a hint of avocado) and the salsa tasted like Dolmio. The main was actually ok. We only had one drink during this time as they never actually asked us if we wanted one.
So not a recommendation. More an “avoid at all costs”.
Not the best start to the introduction to Sheffield to try and persuade the Mrs to move there ;)
Though the Great Gatsby (I think…) we went to did a very good cocktail.
-
This thread is a lot more reliable than Tripadvisor.
-
Indeed - though not as easy to search by proximity to hotel...

Another recommendation for the York, went there a while ago mainly to try the bacon jam as mentioned by Obi, nom.
Spoon (http://www.spoon-cafebistro.co.uk/) is worth a visit, can highly recommend Thursday's pie evening.
-
I've only been to Spoon once and I wouldn't go again.
The salad was very dry and without dressing - it wasn't the sort of thing where you add your own/add olive oil/vinegar
One dish was sooo salty I had to send it back. The chef can't have tasted it as it was inedible.
Then my main was cold so I sent that back to be reheated.
Pretty poor I thought as underneath all that the food might have been OK.
-
Been twice now, lunch and pie evening. Can't remember the salad but my better half would've complained if the food was too salty and it was properly hot both times (had to let the pie sit for a few minutes to let it cool a bit). Maybe you got a bad day or they've listened.
edit: not that I'm trying to convince you to go back, we enjoyed it.

The ex chef from Kitchen lives on our road and I know he has moved to somewhere else on Eccy road, I couldn't remember the name - I will try to pay more attention next time.

NNFN!!! Drove past Dore station the other day and noticed that Moran's (http://www.moranssheffield.co.uk/) has gone, replaced by "Peppercorn" (http://www.peppercorn-restaurant.co.uk/).
:(
Anyone been to the new place yet?

Been to Homemade for lunch a couple of times recently and, both times, have found it to be excellent ......... Good. well informed staff and a great selection of vegetarian food .......

Went there at the weekend and thought it was great.
Some people had pea soup to start with- which sounds boring - but it was creamy cumminy, olive oily bowl wipingly good. Service was good. BYO @ £2 a bottle which is good as I hate paying £12 for a £3 bottle of wine.
Puddings were all brilliant as well.
Mains were good but not brilliant - ie not as good as the starters/puddings. Might be better if you eat meat as 2 people had lamb tagine and said it was great
The place was packed - I mean rammed, so I think you'd need to book if you were going at the weekend. I guess that's some sort of indicator.
-

That's good to hear as I think it changed hands a few months back.
-
Yeap - homemade now owned the girls who previously owned Thelma's on Sharrow vale road.
Hopefully they will actually open it more than the previous owners. Every time I've wanted to go it's been closed, I gave up even going to see it was ever open.
-
They're now open from 10.00 till 3.00 tuesday to saturday and for a few evenings as well ........

Ditto.

I do know what you're trying to say here, but on first reading it conjured a worrying "Michael Winner" image...
-
Anyone on here got experience of Le Bistrot Pierre on eccy road or The Mediterranean on Sharrow Vale?
Torn between the two for a meal on Monday evening, opinions please?
Good veggie or fish options would be handy so The Med is looking good for that but Le Bistrot looks fancy....
-
Not been for quite some time but i've never been dissapointed by the Med's cuisine.
Get's a good rep on Tripadvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186364-d720025-Reviews-Mediterranean-Sheffield_South_Yorkshire_England.html) (FWIW)
-
Bistro Pierre is ok but pretty standard chain stuff. Not fancy like it looks from the outside.
I've not been to the Med but it looks a better bet for proper home cooked type ting.
-
Off out to Kashmiri aroma tonight.. Simply never fails. Best curry in town
-
On the money Fatdoc. I keep telling people about this place as it's hands down the best curry in Sheffield right now.
-
Just been there for the first time while the kids were at a party. I do like Almas but have to agree it was great all round, can't be faulted.
-
Looks like back of house, the place where kitchen was has closed - sheets up over windows. Either that or they are decorating?
-
Since getting back we've ended up eating out a fair bit (seeing family etc.).
Loch Fyne - I don't know why we've only been here twice, it's really good and the prices seem fairly reasonable.
All Siam, Eccy Rd. - Quite good although not as good as the first time I visited, less reasonable prices when compared with other Thai places in Sheffield.
Fox & Hound - I hadn't been here in ages, nice inside but with a fairly average attempt at upmarket food pub. They'd run out of their 'signature pies' which seemed fairly daft.
-
Had lunch at Homemade yesterday. Delicious haloumi pitta and salads. Kids food really good too - cheese/houmous with salad/veg nibbles. Excellent coffee and tiffin cake. V busy and service a bit slow but friendly staff and overall great value. If you're veggie/gluten free etc especially.

As mentioned earlier in the thread Viraaj just down the road is top notch too. Mrs S actually preferred it although I'd say on a par with Kashmiri Aroma.
-
Not sure if it's had a mention on here on not yet but if you like South Indian then Maveli on Glossop road is well worth a shout. Bit like East and West on Abbeydale road but more restaurant than hole in the wall. Lovely dosas!
-
I've been to the new tamper coffee shop + cafe twice recently. It's basically opposite Fusion, another great Sheffield spot.
First time I was rather unimpressed with their drink selection. This is because I'm fussy! I'm sure their coffee is some of the best in the city and they do a great selection of fruit and herbal teas, but I have stomach problems and they didn't have decaf tea or redbush tea. I got a chocolate milkshake and thought it was horrible, though the other half liked it. Service was a bit slow, but for a good reason - their popularity means they're frequently packed, and it's table service unlike *$ etc.
That said, the place is done up great inside, making proper use of the industrial unit. Gotta love the arched brick ceiling.
But I'd heard the food was good, so we went back last weekend. I was armed with a redbush teabag which they happily made up into a pot for me. Service was very good and friendly. Nice atmosphere. I ordered red snapper. £9. I felt that was a bit expensive for lunch in a coffee shop. Then it came. The fish was beautifully seasoned and cooked to perfection, juicy. And there were essentially two portions of it! The potato chipped cubes, the homemade tartare, the veg accompanying were just absolutely stunning. Memorable. It was a proper meal, good portion and spectacular cooking. I could have gone to a restaurant, spent twice as much and felt like it was money well spent.
The other half had an omelette, which was also very good.
Thought someone on here might want some lunch out at some point. Here is good. Fusion, opposite is good (but with shorter opening hours) and even the Showroom is supposedly good with their new chef in, but we've not tried them yet.
All good if you want to eat then watch a film!
-
Also, if you want some quicker, even less ceremonious food, Street Food Chef is just down the road. Great burritos for fuck all. Open all day. Win.
Also, this young lady is good resource, though I suspect I've mentioned her before. http://girlwhoatetheworld.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://girlwhoatetheworld.blogspot.co.uk/)

They've opened up an additional much larger one with lots of seating and a food menu.

2 fuck alls. I find them bland and expensive myself, preferring Pirates Pasties (it has a new Spanish name now) in Orchard Square. The falafel place is alright in that row of shops on Pinstone street and the chinese is very cheap. Not tried it but my mate rated it when we called in (I'd taken sarnies).
-
Jasper, as another woodseats resident I too have sampled viraaj, it's bloody good.
Have to say, the spices and aromatics I thought were better in kashmri aroma, though both are great venues... With blistering service ( a very important aspect for me and the mrs)
Mrs FD rates the fish in KR as one of the best eating out experiences in the city... I rate the higher chilli content dishes there as as good as Bradford, b'ham etc....
That lamb afghani is the best plate of curry I've eaten in Sheffield,30+ years of curry!!! ...
-
To compare to other famous places.... Both are way better than mumtaz was 6 years ago in Bradford...
-
First visit to the Chi Cha Inn in Broomhill last night. Overall very impressed. Ordered some fairly standard Chinese mains which were very nicely done and delicious, not too heavy on the MSG. Nice to see Dim Sum on offer for starters. Above average surroundings and staff were great with two rather tired and hungry kids who weren't' quite on their best behaviour. (Some live music on a Chinese guitar type thing helped cover their noise!)
Prices were ok, maybe slightly above London Road but not at all bad. Two starters, two mains, egg fried rice, veg dish, one pudding (divided into two generous kids portions), three beers came to £50.
Generally recommended. Hope they stay put. Seemed rather over staffed (which did mean service was great), they weren't busy when we arrived although it was early, getting busier as we left.
-
Any recent recommendations? Mrs Obis b'day coming up. Want to book somewhere 'kitchen-esque'
-
Sorry not from me but I ended up in Zeugma II the other night and had a fairly average meal, the low point being one of the deserts served in a silver foil takeout container, the other taking an age to appear and they're card machine failing and thus a soaking to pay the bill.
-
the low point being one of the deserts served in a silver foil takeout container
I had that same desert recently in Zuegma I. To be fair it was nice but presentation piss poor. After having that place relentlessly bigged up by various parties I was a bit disappointed, and both me and her indoors had mildly upset stomachs the next day too.
The turkish place on west street "instanbul" I rated better.
-
Went to Patoo Thai (http://Patoo Thai) a couple of weeks ago, primarily because the nearby All Siam was full. Serviceable Thai - friendly service and quite a nice atmosphere but the food nothing spectacular - slightly over garlic-ed and under chilli - d in my opinion. Nothing was actively bad, just nothing fantastic.

Had a great night last night at Vittles, Broomhill experiencing their 'tasting menu' for Mrs Obi's bday. Mick, (who is front of house/owner but also creates most of the dishes but doesn't do the cooking) welcomed us with his usual warm manner.
They charge £25 a head. We had 6 courses and two cocktails (but it does vary). There was a Groupon (now expired) and I think there is currently an Amazon Local offer but TBH your better off paying Mick cash directly. It works out the same or cheaper. They do it on a Thurs, Fri, Sat evening alongside their normal bistro menu. You need to book in advance.
Part of the fun is the surprise of what's coming next, so I won't go into detail. Suffice to say the various dishes used 'air', 'dust', mousse, soup, liquid, and a very special pill amongst other elements.
I say 'tasting menu' but most courses were full servings so it almost an eating challenge! I really enjoyed it all, if I was being super picky the 'main' was the only one that didn't wow us, but Mick admitted they had put this in so people felt they had a 'proper' meal. It was tasty just didn't match the other dishes for imagination or fun.
The surroundings are still very much 'cafe', but if you took this menu, put it in a place down south with posh plates, cutlery, table linen and posh loos. Gave Mick a waistcoat and a french accent you'd be paying £75-100 a head and it would have lost half the charm and fun.
I can't remember the last time food made me giggle so much. (Possibly helped by the bottle of Champagne we had along with the generous cocktails :alky: )
At £25 per head for 6 courses and two cocktails, can't think of many more fun (and legal) ways to spend 10 fuck-alls.
-
Any know of good quality BYO restaurants. Myself, Joe Picalli, Seb and Andy Popp are jointly celebrating our 50th's and we will be consuming some rather nice wines and we need somewhere to eat. :alky: :beer2: :pissed:
Any thoughts. Andy is vegan just to add another layer!
(Marco's does it midweek but not on weekends >:( )

And so continues Alderson's birthyear...... :icon_beerchug:

Otto's looks like a good option for vegan diets too, not sure if the food is any good but gets reasonable write ups on the usual suspect review sites
-
Only been to Otto's once but had a great time and the food was good

I too have enjoyed an evening at Otto's (http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/), been meaning to get back there myself.

Just clicked that Taste was the Italian place near Hunters Bar Roundabout? Think it's still there in some form but no longer Taste, shame they did awesome breakfasts.
-
Taste has gone and has been replaced by Xenophily Cafe. I haven't been but there are some reviews here-

I rate Urban Choola. It's bring your own and the food is good and offers a different selection to most Indians. It is also cheap as chips.

Just found out that Artisan has closed. :(
Real shame, had some excellent dinners out there. Apparently several independents closed in the last 3 months, too much competition from the chains.
-
Apparently the artisan unit is going to be an indian, so all is not lost.
-
I went to Urban Choola and thought it was absolutely awful! Sorry Dave.
Unless we had completely different stuff you a got lucky? Or were drunk ;-)

I too have enjoyed an evening at Otto's (http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk/), been meaning to get back there myself.
Seb, Joe, Graeme and I did end up at Otto's last weekend and I think we were all pretty happy. Nice atmosphere, staff were fantastic and I really enjoyed the food. I'd definitely go back.

First poor meal at my previously beloved Kashmiri aroma.. Some tweeks to the menu.. Perhaps new chef... Way way too much salt.. Will recheck viraj..... Very sad.
-
Oh no! Kashmir Aroma was my favourite Indian in Sheffield. Was it normal a la carte or buffet night?
-
Every nights a la carte night at Kashmiri, no buffets needed. I go here about 3x a wk when in shef, this is disturbing news Fatdoc. Can you get to the root of this? As for viraj I thought it was absolutely terrible, I was surprised when they asked me to pay
-
Was a busy Saturday.... I'm not giving up on the place yet.
I constrain myself to once a month.
Get there Dense, second opinion sought
-
3 times a week?! How the hell do you not weigh 18stone? ;D
I think your opinion on this is going to count as that's what I call being a proper regular. I'm much like Fatdoc and only a once a month boy.
-
Anyone tried Kitos on chesterfield road?
Sounds pretty good
Cheers

I have been a few times and had different stuff each time, all were really good. Everyone I know who has been has really rated it too. Having said that I just saw Kashmir Aroma is your favourite curry place so not sure how much I trust your judgement ;)

Standard byo Italian, more variable than previous owners in terms of quality. Small, good atmos, worth it if u are local, not worth travelling accross the city for IMO
-
Clean living and the power of prayer Tommy ;)
Unfortunately I won't be able to visit for at least a month, let's hope it's sorted for then ;D

You should probably never trust my judgement knowing my taste in climbing!
Dense, did you say power of prayer? This could be a new business model in line with Weight Watchers. I think you'd have to call it the "Weighting for God".

Very underwhelming meal in Nonna's last week. Utterly over priced and all a bit pretentious. Went a long time ago, and thought the same but Mrs T booked it as I couldn't get a table at our other option.
My crab/chilli risotto pretty bland barring the presence of sliced raw chilli that destroyed any hint of flavour that may have been hidden away. Mrs T was not exceptionally impressed with her pasta dish either.
We didn't fall for the old 'your tables not ready yet, do you want to wait by the bar next door and drink some incredibly overpriced lager' like last time (I recall it was £5 a pint and that was about a decade ago).
It'll definitely be more than a decade this time before I forget and book a table there again.
Humbug.
-
Nonna's has always had this rep which is why I've never been.
-
Went to Arusuvai on Abbeydale rd on Friday p.m. South Indian restaurant that used to be Dhanistha's. Really impressed with the food, service a bit slow but super friendly. They've got a special fixed menu on next Sunday for Tamil New Year which I suspect will be superb.

I really like this place too. Agreed the service is slow but the food is delicious. It is still the same owners as Dhanistas, they just renamed the place. They did explain why but I can't remember now.
Great food!

I'm guessing it wasn't because it was easier to pronounce!

Very good except "Epic" sounds more like a bar full of pastel shirted meatheads in Chapeltown or Grenoside or some other godforsaken backwater than a trendy cafe.

You might be confusing it with Escape in Chapeltown, which is indeed a bit of a hell hole in very much a godforsaken backwater. Easy mistake to make though.
-
That's probably what it reminded me of yes.

Went to Kashmiri aroma this evening, the earlier rumours about the food going downhill I'm pleased to say were unfounded. The chicken passanda was excellent

Hallelujah!

Thank God... not been for a month..sleepless nights will now be over. Cheers Dense.. :dance1:

We went to Nandos this afternoon because Mrs S had been told by everyone at work how great it was so she wanted try it.
Don't get me wrong, I was expecting Burger King and I wasn't disappointed. Nothing wrong with the food or the service if you're expecting it to be shit (Sharpe Jr managed to fire his corn on the cob onto the floor after a few bites and they brought a new one straight away) but seriously.
I could have got a decent meal in a proper restaurant with proper food for the same money. How these places make money is beyond me. And the retards who my wife works with who recommended it....
Oh yeah, just answered my own question.

The in-laws were staying in town last night and thus we ended up out for a meal. Now, having taken them to various places across the city with varying success they always moan about travelling away from where they're staying so this time we let them pick (i.e. essentially gave in) "the nice Italian in the center of town", by name Piccolinos.
Despite the person that greeted us being absolutely drop dead gorgeous, the meal was absolutely terrible. I wasn't expecting big things (having eaten here before) but the pasta was overcooked (to the point of burst ravioli) and they'd failed to drain it at all leading to a nice watery bowl, by far the worst meal I've had in a very long time.
The in-laws had the fish special which actually looked well cooked.
Nat had some kind of sea food medley (always an error when you can't see the sea), and boy was that a mistake. It looked very ropey and poorly (over) cooked but as we weren't paying we didn't like to say anything.
An hour or so later Nats face turned bright red and she developed a rash all over her back. This was followed by being 'quite' ill, being unable to walk across a room, uncontrollable shaking (with some added breathing issues thrown in) and difficulty forming coherent sentences.
I called 111 who promptly dispatched an Ambulance.
She was released around 3AM and we were told that it wasn't an anaphylactic reaction due to the delay (1h30?).
-
Fuckkk, hope she's recovering okay
-
Piccolino's is a chain iirc. I've eaten in one - it was good once bad another time. :( hope Nats feeling better now.

Google type IV anaphyactiod reaction. Clear as from the above... I'd buy a couple of Epi pens off the net...

Yep, http://www.individualrestaurants.com/piccolino/ (http://www.individualrestaurants.com/piccolino/)
Didsbury one is slightly overpriced for what you get but the food has always been good and service/ambience excellent. The food in the Lime Tree is loads better but the staff can be a bit hit and miss.

Must have changed since we went JC.
Utter and utter dogshit. Entire place stinks of burning oil from the kitchen, 'waiter' literally doesn't give a fuck, food = dogshit. Admittedly it was nice in the late 90's but now a total shithole. Avoid.

Had lunch at 'Smoke BBQ' this week. Verdict = alright if you want lunch that's cooked. Expensive. Not a place to go for a meal/date (like a warehouse - we sat on a cable drum). Or a pint, unless you're happy at £5 for a bottle of already overpriced Thornbridge. (Not getting into that whole scandal) but even Pespi drinkers beware at £2.50.
Anyway... I had the lunch menu beef brisket sarnie, my colleagues took either 'pulled pork' or beef burgers. Apart from 'ribs' this seemed to be the whole of the menu anyway. Rubbish for a vegetarian.
I enjoyed the food. The chips were of good quality and the meat was very tender. I felt short changed as the brisket is sliced, vs 'pulled' which seemed to mean loads more meat, but no fucker let me try their pork, they liked it (but the men I work with might like anything, I don't trust their views on grub)
If you take the brisket, you don't get ketchup for your chips. You get a very finely shredded red cabbage pickle. It was nice, but I doubt they made it. And they cannot hear you asking for ketchup. And the 'bun' was a brioche one. Which should never appear beyond petit dejeuner or proper breakfast.
The burgers looked ace, btw.
Oh and, in spite of arriving at 1200, with the place being deaders, took ages for the grub to arrive.
Verdict: 6/10 - good food but it shouldn't be hard to do it. In the middle of town though, lots of filthy pigs will eat anything. I've since seen this which makes me question their morals even more: http://smokebbq.co.uk/manvsfood/ (http://smokebbq.co.uk/manvsfood/)

I'm disappointed by your reviews Underground. There I was opening up UKB for a browse over breakfast and I see a 2am Underground post - on the restaurant reviews thread and I thought bad-a-bing: this has rant written all over it.
But no.. there were hints of a classic rant starting to brew when illuminating the non-pulled brisket - and it backed down from the overpriced drinks tirade potential...
So near and yet so far.
2.5 stars (out of 5).
-
I'm not Henry the VIII but I left Smoke BBQ hungry, small portions and slimming on the wallet. No thanks.
I don't like the chemical warfare style marketing they use either - pumping out bbq smell into the square outside. Bastards.
-
Went to the Pasta Bar on Sharrow Vale Road (opposite Two Steps) last night as part of my carb loading festival in advance of a race on Sunday (that and I couldn't be bothered to cook as had been in London all day).
Wasn't overly busy but the service was very good, the garlic bread starter was a decent size and not one out of a freezer either. Decided on the ragu for the main, again, very well cooked, good size portion and pasta cooked properly too. Worked out at just over £20 a head with starter, main and a bottle of house white between two of us, so pretty good value for money too.
Only two small downsides; the wine wasn't properly cold to start with, and there were out of prawns even though they featured heavily on the menu. Other than that, I can't really fault it. Will go again.

+1 - very much the same experience - even down to the white wine not being chilled enough (we asked for more ice to put in the bucket). Enjoyed it though.

RE: White wine & temperature.
I often pop a couple of ice cubes in a glass of white wine... (esp if its just house/bar) though people do sometimes look at me like I'm an alien...
I saw loads of people doing it in SA, but not in many other places I've travelled.. *shrugs*

They may well be doing that for other reasons of course... (multiple causality and all that)

Went to Otto's with the family last night, as others have said earlier, its brilliant, great food, really friendly and you can BYO for £2 corkage - bargain. The lamb tagine was particularly rated. Tunisian red, if you buy in, is pretty decent, and goes very well with the often spiced food.
-
Got a new favourite Indian in Sheffield - Maveli on Glossop Road
Seriously fucking delicious food, South Indian in style. The first time I've had a fish curry where the fish has been properly (ie. barely) cooked. And a total bargain if you like vegetables (vege mains are around a fiver).
Order some starters and be patient if it's busy, it's totally worth the wait.

Update in food emporiums in woodseats over the last few months.
Kashmiri aroma.... Went with Indian work colleagues, we've been before.. Many times. Go go as a goup about 4 times a year. Again too salty, not just me. We agreed. It's lost it's place in my heart now.
Swanky Franks, burger restaurant... For what it is it works, I don't go in for these sort of places as a rule. But my family of six love the place, the big burger of the house ( forgot name) is a great big tasty feed. £125 for six, mains, sides and desserts. And 5 peronis.
Shimuls in norton roundabout.. For delivery.. 30 mins. The naga and shobuz masala and madras being personal favs.. I rate the food above KA. Not as clever, but balance of heat, spice and salt is better, I think they have a new chef, they have a new menu.
-
Agree with swanky franks, good for what it is. The only bugbear I have with the place is the waitress who's really good with kids thinks everyone's a kid and talks very very slowly and deliberately. Think James Pearson but 45 blonde and boobs.
I must like saltier food Jon;) I think KA's on top of it's game at mo.
-
Fair play Lee...
Do me a favour and delivery a chicken Naga, chilli naan with okra bhaji and Sag bhaji side dish from the Shimul. I know you won't be disappointed.. But yeah - we all have different tastes and opinions... Hence the strength of the thread.
-

And sexier armpits than Cindy Beale! She can talk to me how she likes
-
My god Jon I can't eat naga's anymore! Will try shimul at some point tho. That said I don't have curries at home, more of a sit down to be waited on treat. Whereas I'll have Chinese takeout but won't go out for chinese. I think I'm fucking weird. I also hope this doesn't make it into the racism thread!

For a Naga... It's OK ( hot madras) but the other spices make something... Well, sublime.
Takeaways vs. restaurant... I know what you mean... Like... Who goes out for a pizza
-
I went out for pizza last night... Very nice :) I'm with Dense on the curry restraunt / Chinese take out combo.
-
I don't have curries at home, more of a sit down to be waited on treat. Whereas I'll have Chinese takeout but won't go out for chinese.
This makes perfect sense to me.
My biggest bugbear re Swanky Franks is the always-on TV. Completely lose the kids soon as you walk in.
-
Shirley that's a positive? ;)
-
If we're talking about food in Woodseats then the thread has to include The Viraj IMO
The fish Jalfray is melt in the mouth sizzling spicy heaven.
Quite often get a free drink while you're waiting ton pick up a takeaway as well.
-
Went to that new takeaway Sultan's a couple of weeks ago. I'd go again but wasnt as good as the Bengal Kitchen used to be
-
Cheers Dolly. Their new menu got posted through my door this week... Looks well interesting... Will takeaway in the next couple of weeks... Next treat night... I hear you on the fish at viraj. Mrs FD loves her curry fish - and rates it v high.
Woodseats gastro... Who would have thought 10 years ago!!!

Great food!
We went here on Saturday evening. Completely agree with both of you.
It was really busy and the service wasn't the quickest but the staff were really friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Dead cheap too.
-
:agree: Been to Arusuvai a few times and it's the best Indian I've tasted for a while.
My only gripe is the chapati's are expensive at £2.50 for two. Which I know is fuck all but still these should be 1/5 of a fuck all each.
Gonna try the other curry houses mentioned in this thread to see how they compare.
-
Was persuaded to try SMOKE, outside the winter gardens and was pleasantly suprised. From the outside it looks pretty trendy and expensive, but once you're in it becomes apparent that it's more of a canteen affair.
We went for a BBQ sharing platter which was ridiculously big.
Whole ham hock
Two posh sausages
Rack of ribs
Chicken thighs
Pulled pork
Chips
Macaroni cheese
Coleslaw.
There where two of us and we managed about half of it.
They have a pretty cool open plan kitchen that the kids really enjoyed watching the cooking.
Regular mains were cheap, with burger and chips for a tenner. They looked good but I didn't try them.
Lightning fast service too (although it was a Sunday afternoon).
Pop was served in jamjars which is just stupid.
All in all a really nice place, with good food at a good price. A rarity in the centre of Sheffield.
-
Went to Arusuvai for a take away on Saturday.
Thought it was poor on a number of fronts.
Too expensive
Portions too small
Too salty
Too bitter
Dishes too samey
Some were definitely tinned
Not going there again

On the Indian tip, Maazi in Hathersage has had a 100% track record for me from the slackline-pleasing scientific sample of two visits. Last December we had a great meal there, this December we had a great meal there (no El Mocho this visit though). Tasty, distinctive dishes with succulent meats.
-
All in all a really nice place, with good food at a good price. A rarity in the centre of Sheffield.
But simply don't go when it's busy (chances are if you haven't booked it you couldn't anyway).
Poor service, food suffers, most of the clientele are warming up for a big night out and are thus rowdy, even the drinks suffered. Also, it's still a distant second to Texas BBQ restaurants I've tried (in the USA, but not in Texas).
-
Nat and I ventured down to Craft and Dough last night (this is right near the Fat Cat and is owned by the Milestone/Wig+Pen/Fancie Bakery people), not so much because we wanted to try it, more because we were feeling too lazy to cook.
It's a bit 'hipster' in there with the chipboard skirting boards and general feel but (thankfully) I wasn't served my liquids in a jamjar.
That said, liquids were the biggest issue for me as it took longer to get a drink than to get a pizza. Also, with such good pubs nearby I'm not sure of the pricing at £4.50 for a can of Sierra Nevada Pale (and prices only go upwards from there!).
The pizza was 'OK', it's a bit depressing that various men in vans around France can provide better quality pizza's than restuarants but it seems like that's a fact. The pizzas seem reasonably prices to me at £8.
We'll probably go again (due to location) but if it was (or you are) on the other side of town then simply put, I wouldn't make the journey (or if I did I'd go to the Fat Cat instead)!

I had wondered about this place as I thought it was a late opening cafe, think i'll take the pork pie and squirt of mustard at the Fat Cat.
Ta for the review.

Went to the new Gionis italian place on Oakbrook road last week. Nice place, but Pizzas were very average. I'll give them another chance and order a proper meal, otherwise its back to La Terazza.
-

I live a well aimed bhaji throw from Maazi and I've eaten in there at least once a month since it opened and not had a bad meal yet. Can't praise it high enough though the fact that I can throw another bhaji in the opposite direction and hit Sangams leads me to believe that a village of this size can't sustain two curry shops for ever.

Or the Urban 1/4? Most of my office are going there this p.m. Or are you veggie?
-
Another new South Indian place in Sheffield, Sai Nivas at the bottom of the moor. Had a good veg thali last week, tasty massive portion and friendly service. Probably had a mention at some point on this thread already but if you're in town and want healthy fast food then Fanoush does great falafel wraps. One in Broomhill, top of moor and London road.
-

This place always looks deserted. No I'm not veggie!

It's my favourite restaurant in sheffield I think. It's not steak pie at the grouse, but it'll do.

it was my regular before kids (2000 ad)
sounds like it's not changed
thanks
-
Anyone checked out the new one at the bottom of Brocco bank yet?
-
Had breakfast in Fancie on Ecclesall road on Saturday- what a joke.
Nice enough coffee - in very small cups. £2 for a sausage - each. Won't be getting a second visit from me. Not very fancy either, though staff nice.
-
JFC how much for a full fry up £15?
-
Went to Smoke for late lunch today as wife's birthday. She was psyched for ribs. Went for the £30 platter as recommended above (shared between us and our small children). Easily enough food (not bothered having an evening meal as still stuffed!) She got a free desert as it was her birthday ('Awesome...something or other ?') which lived up to its name (like a cookie cake, with marshmallow and chocolate sauce!) and kids portion of ice cream was doubled for no extra charge by waiter. I thought it was pretty cool and the missus loved it - recommended if you love your protein and fancy going somewhere a bit different.. good place to take kids in the daytime. 70p an hour parking in the 'charity car park' under the old Grosvenor Hotel.
-
Anyone checked out the new one at the bottom of Brocco bank yet?
Yes. The Brocco (formerly Peace Guesthouse). Went on Sunday. They've spent a fortune doing the building up and the exterior looks great compared to the dive it was before. Hope it works. Interior is all stylish tasteful muted greys - not my cup of tea. The menu was limited and is more very up market cafe than full blown restaurant with a couple of oddities ie the cheesecake was better described as a chocolate torte. I wasnt drawn to any of the mains so had two starters. We enjoyed what we had and seemed reasonably priced. Good friendly service. Would go again. Nice to combine with a walk around Endcliffe Park.
-
Don't know if it's ever been mentioned, so just throwing this out there. The Rude Shipyard. It's the haunt of many a climber, so I expect some of you use it. Does Shauna still have a coach? because if so I'm gonna shop her for the (very good) fry-up I saw her eating.
Anyway, I haunt the place extremely regularly as I go there for work as well as pleasure. Great staff and atmosphere, awesome cake (Try the chocolate guiness). They also do some very tasty, interesting lunches. In a fancier place you'd pay 2-3 times as much for some of the food they serve. I do opine them to be slightly small, but this is fixed with the aforementioned cake.
They're also a (mainly) second-hand bookshop so you can peruse and read while eating if you're alone or bored of your company.
It's up for sale, so hopefully new owners will keep it running the same way.
-
Went to Little Hanoi (https://www.facebook.com/littlehanoisheffield) on London Road last night.
I'm no connoisseur of Vietnamese cuisine but the food was delicious.
5 people, £30 p/head including tip and 4 bottles of wine.
-
Kashmiri aroma meal last weekend.
Way better than recent experiences. Back up there.
Superb
No negative points at all.

My only gripe is is that they feel a bit hassly when you go up for your 7th plate on a monday night
-
I'm not sure if it's been covered but the Baji Shop on Chesterfield Road was very nice imo. Small place which does good food in a good atmosphere with pleasant staff.
-
Pretty impressed with Urban 1/4 (http://www.urbanquarter.co/) down on Kelham Island this weekend. Took the kids early Sat night. A textbook example of keep it simple but do it well. Great gourmet burgers in lovely brioche buns with tasty sides and sauces. Not huge portions but fine and you need to leave room for the freshly made doughnuts for pudding. Prices just about right and not ripping you off for sides and toppings etc. A fine selection of interesting beer and gin also on offer. Burgers, doughnuts, beer, gin. What else is there?
-
Check out Craft and Dough next door. Seems to be getting v popular as the Pizzas are great, as is the beer. And it's good value.
-
Thats interesting Toby, I thought Urban 1/4 was a rip off, you do get ripped off for sides and sauces etc. Food was ok, shakes were shit, beer was £4.60 for any small bottle, and the freshly made doughnuts were an absolute joke at just over one fuck all for a tiny doughnut. Won't ever be going back there. Handmade Burger any day of the wk, food and shakes just so much better.
-
Talking of burgers, went to Tamper at Sellers Wheel on Arundel Street last weekend. Whilst not exactly a bargain, and pretty hipsterish, the burger itself was very good indeed. All the other menu items looked nice and judging how packed it was, I guess it's pretty consistent. Either that or there are more people who enjoy drinking out of handled jam jars in Sheffield than I thought.

We tried a shake and rated it and didn't think the doughnuts were that small, for a doughnut? Didn't check the price of the beer TBH but the bill came to less that £50 for two adults plus two kids which I thought was OK. I do like HM Burger but its a bit chainish, that said last time me and Cofe went there we got half price burgers and 8 free beers, so it would be hard to beat on price!

Had some very good fish there a while back. It's so busy it almost feels like a canteen at times, but the food is good.

Been once and might well go again at some point. Definitely worth a visit just for being different. Food was good too though. As were prices.
-
Been been working my way through some of the gourmet burgers in Sheffield recently, winner so far is Bungalows and Bears, 2-4-1 on tuesday a bargain too. Lucky Fox and The Harley also knocking out some pretty decent stuff.
-
Something a little bit different but I have to recommend this highly - my birthday treat last night: http://www.buddingtons.com
Really friendly and down to earth couple who'll come and cook up a storm in your own kitchen. Leslie is head chef at Brocco on the Park (http://www.brocco.co.uk/kitchen/) (never been but now it's on my list) and the food was up there with some of the best I've had.
Expensive for two but you pay a one-off fee for the chef, then a per-person charge on top of that depending upon the menu so if there's six of you it's just the same price as a decent restaurant.
We had a mainly seafood menu which was fantastic and left me gobsmacked that somebody could create such a meal in our tired old kitchen.
Added bonus of no washing up to be done :)

Decent meal at Peppercorn last night. They do a mid-week menu (mains £10, starters and desserts £5) which you can mix and match with the a la carte. All dishes impressive. Good service. Recommended.
-
Not really a restaurant, but Seven Hills Bakery is great. Strange combination of cafe, grocer and bakery. Strange in a good way.

oof

Good. The Old Vicarage offers fine dining but it comes with a terrible atmosphere & snotty service; generally the whole place is just far too up it's own arse. I actually witnessed a work colleague being ridiculed for her food choice by the waitress (think it was the manageress/owner); totally out of order anywhere let alone when you're paying such high prices. Fischer's on the other hand is excellent, go there instead.
At a far less wallet-straining level than the above we had a really nice anniversary meal at Rafters (http://www.raftersrestaurant.co.uk/) tonight - varied, interesting food; wine that isn't a pisstake on the markup front and really nice staff - would go again.
-
+1 for Rafters from me too. Has my 40th birthday meal in there and whilst the latter parts of the meal are somewhat hazy, I do recall the food and wine being excellent.

Newish burger restaurant called Urban near gready Greek does excellent gourmet burgers seating is kinda of small but excellent food rosemary chips are good too check it out

Wanted to go rafters for years but never made it, it's our anniversary tomos but I'll wait for a special occasion
-
:clap2:Got to be the near longest serving above the norm but not up its arse restaurant in sheff....?? My wife went there... As my " sig other" 22 years ago on a got to go works do and I'm thinking we should go back, for the Lols!!
-
Fuck it, doing the 20 yr anniversary there in a couple of weeks!!! booked. BOOM.
-
Torn.... do I book The Milestone or Marco At Milano? I've been to the latter a couple of times and thought it was great, but never The Milestone.
I don't mind paying for good food, but I do hate paying mediocre prices for mediocre food (and both of these fit in that mid-range). Anyone been recently to either and pass opinion?
Thanks!
-
Friends have had their bookings at Marco's cancelled a couple of times recently as "the chef's in Italy" :-\
Milestone is always good in my experience.

Neither, try Peppercorn.
-
Never been to the Milestone but went to M@M a few weeks back having not been for a few years, still the same as it was even down to some of the same options on the menu, the food was good like always but I was slightly disappointing that it hasn't moved on and some of the waiters were a bit brusque. I won't be rushing to go back there again, it used to be my favourite restaurant but I think my visits to Rafters in summer were preferable, the menu had changed in the four weeks between those visits and it's different again, quite tempted by another visit now I've looked it up again.
And like Obi says, Peppercorn is good too, just the same as it was under the previous management.
-
We fairly regularly go to the Milestone for their early bird menu which is a great price. Had some gorgeous steak last time and the food ranges from good to great. Portion sizes aren't huge but even three courses is pretty cheap on early bird. Would happilympay full prices if going for a celebration and suspect the non-cheapo menu might produce bigger portions. Its a gastropub, on which opinions vary.
-
Ah cool, many thanks everyone. I'll take Marco off the list.
I've been meaning to go to Rafters - coincidentally was looking at the menu the other night. Right, looks like I might have to do a couple of trips to cover options! My wife won't complain :)

Where's good to eat in town and not to noisy on a Saturday night? - meeting some friends st the Station so combining with a visit to the Sheffield Tap

Sorry Simon not relevant to your post but... Cafe Iberico in Crookes is lovely; great coffee, charcuterie and good simple daytime food

That was our first thought but apparently it can be quite noisy. Will book there unless anyone suggests an alternative.

Being quiet on a Saturday night while paying center-of-town rents would shut most businesses down.

Went here tonight, evening bistro at spoon cafe in woodseats:
http://www.spoon-cafebistro.co.uk
Relaxed unfussy vibe, very very good food, 3 courses for £20 seems like an absolute bargain. Check it out yeah.
-
Can second Spoon, not been in the evening but had a few good breakfasts and lunches there. Couple of other newish places in Woodseats serving good food too, both nothing special from outside so easy to miss.
Daily bread deli - opposite big tree pub, just had great tapas lunch here today, stupidly cheap, healthy and tasty! They do a great full english for only £3.75, good quality too.
That place - opposite KFC, best scotch egg I've had, great stuff like brisket burgers and massive salads. Again well cheap.
Both worth a look, getting spoilt for choice in Woodseats, place seriously needs a decent pub!
-
Got a new favourite Indian in Sheffield - Maveli on Glossop Road
Seriously fucking delicious food, South Indian in style. The first time I've had a fish curry where the fish has been properly (ie. barely) cooked. And a total bargain if you like vegetables (vege mains are around a fiver).
Order some starters and be patient if it's busy, it's totally worth the wait.
http://www.maveli.co.uk/ (http://www.maveli.co.uk/)
Update on this - took shortie these last night before a gig. Great food, curry, dosa, the lot. Not an enormous menu, which is a good sign. If you're a veggie it looks pisscheap. And addresses my main criticism of most run-of-the-mill british Indian restaurants in that they generally only have deserts as an afterthought, usually with a crap bought-in menu the same you get in benidorm or mallorca. This place does some proper indian and indian-inspired desserts, like the mango creme brulee etc. Deffo be going again.

Cheers for the recommendation, exactly what Dave says. Very enjoyable meal on Sat night, low key but nice place. Friendly chap who was front of house, possibly the owner. Enjoyed all our food and the Malbec was very nice and not bad at £15.

Anyone got the knowledge on where to go for a nice meal around Tideswell, Girlfriend's parents are up and I'm keen to not look daft(er)
Cheers
-
Bakewell too far? We went for lunch at the Manners pub the other week, food was good and had an interesting menu, although service was slow.
Probably over budget unless it's a special occasion, but Fischer's in Baslow is great (we went for our anniversary a couple of years ago.)
-
Red Lion?! ABS.
Tideswell chippy is the best chippy in the universe.

The rule is you've got to bag a tick at the Tor to justify the reward of a Tideswell chippy visit. Hence my visits in recent years have been few and far between.

Thanks TB, that looks like the one, I'll try and get a table today

Oh Lordy lord, where to start. I'm not one to resort to hyperbole but it's going to difficult not to describing last nights meal. Headed to the Milestone for our anniversary dinner where Joro (http://www.jororestaurant.co.uk) is running a tasting menu on limited nights prior to moving into their permanent home in the soon to be completed Krynkl (http://www.krynkl.co.uk) building a few streets away.
A young team of guys with experience in the Milestone kitchen among others put together 11 courses some of which were among the finest we've ever tasted. I'd banked on them making an effort to build their reputation as a new venture and boy was I right. I won't try and describe every dish but the highlights were the finest vegetarian dish I've ever had including parsnip and truffle, another a taste sensation including duck meat and celeriac and two of the four puddings were truly outstanding including flavours that were familiar but I didn't know I knew! Thats not to say any of the dishes were poor, just not quite as incredible. Only one wasn't quite right according to our tastes, still well cooked just a little tepid with too strong flavours to accompany the fish, but our standards were pretty high by this stage. At £45 a head it worked out less than a fiver a dish which for cooking at this level is incredible. The only minor criticisms would be down to the venue which as it is temporary would be unfair to blame them for. Not sure if there are any tables left during the pop-up, snap one up if you can. Otherwise definitely one to check out when they are in their permanent home.

Pretty sure I took the Mrs there a couple of years back. Don't remember much detail but it was probably good.

Any recommendations to treat my rather picky wife? Preferably veggie friendly..

After ending up spending the day in Sheffield yesterday we decided to head to The Forum and (contrary to my last few meals there) it was remarkably sub-par.
Fiona ordered a burger, which arrived and was absolutely bone dry. They must have been cooking the thing for about half an hour.
Guy came over, asked if everything was OK...Fiona told him it wasn't up to scratch / edible and his response was to ummm and errr, and eventually say "I'll let the kitchen know". And scarper. No offer of a replacement, something else, taking it off the bill etc. He never came back.
A different member of staff came over to clear up the plates when I and Una had finished (Fiona's burger still untouched bar one mouthful), and Fiona asked them to confirm they weren't charging us for it. Cue the same guy from before coming over again (I'm assuming he was a supervisor of some sort) and asking "were you not happy with it?". He got Fiona's "teacher look" and a more comprehensive reminder of the previous conversation. He took it off the bill.
Pretty shabby, and a shame as I've had some nice lunches there the last few times I've been.
-
So, popping down to Peak with Una Mon/Tues. Was hoping to pick up a pizza from the van at Stanage (we're staying at North Lees) but they don't go there any more.
Any top tips for a decent pizza, preferably Peak side of Sheffield, and open at about 5/6pm ish so we can have an early tea?

A callout/delivery to North Lees had crossed my mind!
Google seems to say Proove or Porter Pizza Co. Think the former is edging it in menu alone.

I like both but think Porter are more interesting toppings. Also it's owned and run by local climbers

Another shout for porter pizza. On a more practical note, its much easier to park for PP.. 15 min free parking on sharrow vale road, and if your lucky, bang opposite. Unlike broomhill which is a ball ache to park for.

We have a 'Prove' just up the road here in Didsbury. It's good - food good - we'll run - good service - baby pram friendly.

Another shout for porter pizza. They do decent gluten free bases which is ace if you're a coeliac.

Proove in Broomhill is a good carbfest.

sounds like we need a Prove/Porter bake off with Nether Edge Pizza Co judging..

I was being slightly damning with faint praise. Its good. But I've not had my socks blown off by my pizza experience there.
Quite whether any pizza experience would blow my socks off is another question :)

Depends on the amount of chillis they stick on top.

Scoville/m2 could just reflect a dense application of low-Scoville chillis or a few localised high-Scoville chillis :P

Another top notch anniversary meal at Joro last night. 'Only' 10 plates this time which ends up being around 14 once you include starting snacks and two plate 'plates'.
Hard to fault, quality wine not silly prices, excellent informative waiting, opportunity to talk/watch the chefs at work. Out of ten for each dish nothing below a 6, most 7-8 and two or three stand out dishes of 9-10, interestingly many of the highlights were vegetarian. If you haven't been book soon, go for the 8 or 10 plate menu (which down south would be 2 or 3 times the price). On the weekend you need to book a while in advance but mid week you may be lucky, there were tables free last night.
They are small plates but after 10+ courses I was about as full as I'd be after a three course 'normal' meal. Don't order three plates and expect to be full (like some numpties on Tripadvisor :slap:)

Been wanting to go to Joro for a while now - must get it sorted.
Bit of a shout out for Cafe Ceres Bistro too - went there last night for a low key meal. 2 mains and carafe of wine for £25 on Tues/Weds eve.
Very nice little Duck a l'orange with scrummy dauphinoise potatoes. My other halfs roast chicken breast was equally as tasty. Not super posh nosh, but very tasty for a reasonable price in a relaxed venue.

Shout out for Hungry Buddha traditional Nepalese Thali at Moor Market (lunch served Mon - Sat).
Dev will also do outside catering. Delicious curry/dhal/roti. Really fresh and healthy.

Has anyone eaten at Make No Bones, vegan place on Chesterfield Rd? Thanks.

Just got in from an 8 plate menu at Joro in Sheffield. Simply fantastic. Every plate was nicely varied from the last and as Obi-wan said, vegetarian dishes as good as the meat ones. Desserts were excellent too, though we opted for the cheese course at the end which was probably too much and only a simple place of brie and sourdough. Wine was excellent and good value, got a glass of fizzy wine for nothing to start too.
All in all I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Service was very good too, not pushy or sniffy, just attentive, helpful and at the right pace of serving dishes. Took two hours to do the 8 plates and starter and never felt like they were coming thick and fast, or long pauses between each. Can't wait to go back again at some point, not too often but certainly will return.

Went to Joro last night for my other half's birthday. Probably had fairly high expectations after the reports on here, but it definitely lived up to them. The 8 plate menu was about right for us - almost 3 hours from arriving to paying the bill, so a very relaxed experience (maybe the advantage of a Wednesday night?). Good wine, good service. Just looking for excuses to go back again.

Off there on Saturday night for my B'day. :great:
Lad at work had a bit of poor lunch time experience, so good to hear its lived up to others expectations. (Sounds like he's just a bit fussy about his food and didn't like half the dishes, plus he was very hung over from the night before... nob).

Sorry for the slow reply, just saw this. We've been a couple of times as we have a few vegan friends, it's very good. Menu tends to be 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 deserts but these are all changed out fairly frequently. Portions are large and as is often the case with vegan food, it's quite carb-heavy so leave plenty of room.
They're very good at vegan versions of non-vegan dishes, I've previously had "fried chicken" made from broccoli and jackfruit and my other half had "fish and chips" which involved battered seaweed-wrapped tofu. They're very creative and the range of flavours they can achieve within the limitations of veganism is very eye-opening for none-vegans like me. I'd certainly recommend it.
For vegan food in Sheff there's also BurgerLolz on Abbeydale Road, they do properly "loaded" vegan burgers and milkshakes, had a couple of good meals with veggie/vegan friends there too.

There's also one on Sharrow Vale thats meant to be good. We tried to go for a work lunch there the other week but couldn't get in, guess that's a good sign.
And on that note, Joro is fuly booked up Friday and Sat night for the next 5 weeks!!!!

Think the word is spreading especially now they have a Michelin 'Bib' (https://www.viamichelin.co.uk/web/Restaurant/Sheffield-S3_8US-Joro-527950-41102). Doubt it'll be long before they get a star and will be tempted to put up the prices and possibly move out of Sheffield. Hoping that's not the case. Go whilst you can.

Want a proper family Italian restaurant experience in west side of Sheffield? had a super fun time in a four day old restaurant in woodseats.. Da Vinci.. just off A61. Just off the dale, where it meets the A61. Old burger joint. Proper family run place. 5 people, 3 courses, 2 rounds of drinks, 2 rounds of free lemoncello, 105 quid. I'm going back.
it's not fast, they dont want it to be, it's not overladen with fat, the pizza is top drawer, the gnocchi like what mamma makes, and the sausage starter was just like what you get in the motherland. I did not have a coffee, I should have tried that, my bad. and the stuffed pasta is really really good. Yet to try fish or meat mains. I doubt anyone will have a shit time there, unless you want to order, eat and leave... that's not the intent. Great looking little proseco and cocktail bar downstairs too.. a welcome addition to the area.

Going there on Wednesday, based on your review. SO I know where you live if it's crap :-)

Some to avoid, mainly dodgy take aways, but surprised the Cross Sythes is listed. Only had a pint in there but looked fine.

Wasabi Sabi: always quite liked this place in the past, although it's never had especially good sushi it's passable and a pleasant evening. Went at the weekend, sadly seems to have gone downhill drastically. Restaurant almost empty on a Friday night, terrible service and really tired looking sashimi that had been cut ages ago. Shame, hope it perks up again

The Cross Sythes has changed hands recently. Had some food there a few weeks ago and it was very tasty.

Brilliant place, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and excellent food.

Bored on a nightshift so thought I'd stick in some recommendations for my favourite 3 restaurants..
The Rutland Arms in town, check out the specials board, had some really nice dishes here including deep fried black pudding (nicer than it sounds)
Murpuri tawa on London rd tother side of car lot next to Ozmen's, order the special, more curry than you can eat for a tenner a head
Golden Taste up near Highfield library on London rd, Hunan style cooking, heavy on the chilli's and the texture. They also do that hotpot thing where you cook meat and things in a boiling broth, it's Chinese cuisine but not as you know it.
Enjoy!

Hotpot is one of the main things in Chongqing where they host a Bouldering World Cup every year and we always get taken out for at least one hotpot each visit. I might have to check it out, maybe get Seb and Echo down there.

Went to Frehiwet Habesha for the third time last night. Its absolutely brilliant Ethiopian food mainly served on big sharing platters. Pretty cheap too. Would recommend getting one of the meat or veggie sharing platters if you go. Service is a bit slow but definitely worth the wait. Wear warm clothes as it is pretty cold inside, I don't think they have central heating.

Just Falafs - Middle Eastern vegan food on Chesterfield Rd. Tasty, fresh, interesting flavours, big portions, quick and friendly service, embarrassingly cheap, now deliver. Recommended!

Ajantas Vegeatrian curry , on Abbeydale Rd. Been a few times now, great thali trays, cheap, and bring your own booze (little Tesco over the road). It’s all freshly made to order so isn’t quick , but the guy who runs it is really friendly.
The Two Thirds craft beer place next door is OK if you like that sort of thing, A bit pricey, and rammed Fri/Sat night.
