Title: new topo app for Rubicon
Post by: SteG on June 06, 2011, 12:13:48 pm
a little bit pre-emptive but I'm a wee bit excited as I've just finished my latest topo-app for the sport and bouldering at Rubicon :bounce:

I chose Rubicon as it's one of my favourite crags and it was a good test for more functionality than the previous Bowderstone and Minus10 apps. I've just sent it off to the App Store for approval so should be ready for download in 7-10 days time (which gives me a few days to sort the android version)...

more soon  ;D

 mostly? I'll have to take a look once it's out (today?) but in the interests of a healthy debate  :boxing: it would be good to have a few discrepancies ?

As long as you've done all the problems, otherwise you're not allowed an opinion on the grade!

woo hoo! it's through approvals and is now on the app store, you can download it by searching for 'wcj' or 'rubicon' and I've put some info on the site at http://thesend.co.uk/apps/rubicon.php (http://thesend.co.uk/apps/rubicon.php) with a brief write-up and description of the app.

I've made up a nice app-icon of me on Kudos
(http://thesend.co.uk/images/apps/rubicon/appstore_icon.png)

and put together some screen grabs so peeps can see what's in there
(http://thesend.co.uk/images/apps/rubicon/wcj-rubicon-climbing-topo-app-ukb.jpg)

any comments on grades and descriptions would be great  :worms: - there's a feedback link in the app or via the site so that I can collate them more easily :kiss2: and feed it back into the next update, and any feedback on the app itself would be gratefully received so I can make the next one better again.

Its great - nice and easy to use. One comment/update, you have topo/routes buttons - which is a bit confusing, as routes really means description...

thanks TT, I used icons for these on the last two, maybe I'll change these back to icons or use topo/list

yes, list would be better than desription :)
good effort..

by the way, whats the programming like (learning curve steepness etc..) for iOS? (I already code in C (badly) and C# (better))

It's steep-ish, the language itself is OK and if you code already then the main difficulty is figuring out which 'thing' (object/framework/library) does what you want it to do; having said that the documentation is superb, there's plenty of code samples on the apple dev site and some good books to steer you through the initial stages. PM me if you wanted more info.

The Android version is ready for download from the site: http://theSend.co.uk/apps/rubicon.php (http://theSend.co.uk/apps/rubicon.php),
- the app should work on phones running 2.1 or higher and needs internet access (for the weather forecast and map) and location data (just used to show your position on the map).

as always, any feedback or comments would be greatly appreciated  :kiss2:

Great app, very nice work.  Hopefully will be able to decide which holds I'm meant to try and pull on for Johnny G next time I'm there!

so I've been busy working away in the background on the apps project, I've had a bit of feedback on the rubicon app and put this together with some other functionality that I wanted to put in and have updated the iphone version with a new topo for Kudos Wall Bouldering, updated approach information and some updated route descriptions. I also changed the topo/list buttons to icons (thanks TT/Robl) which now match the Android version.

New stuff added to the topo screen:
- Swipe left/right gestures in route descriptions (topo view) to navigate through route descriptions for a sector.
- Selecting a route in topo view by tapping a route badge or swipe gesture centres the corresponding route in the list view.
- The selected route is now shown with a hi-lighted route badge in topo view.
- Sector topos now zoom out to fit their full width. Pinch to zoom in/out , double tap to zoom in and two finger tap to reset the zoom level to fit the topo to height.

In the maps:
- Tapping the crag pin will show the current weather forecast in the pin
- The parking pin now links out to the Maps App for directions to the crag parking from your current location.

as usual, any feedback is greatly appreciated as it's good to be able to put these improvements into upcoming projects

small refresh for iOS app is in the app store, bumped into Zippy a little while back and got info on the new stuff around Salar so have added a topo for the routes on the Salar buttress, and a new link-up he's added to the sport routes above Kudos.
Have also continued with the roll-out of android versions of the apps into Google Play with Rubicon which is no longer available for download off the main website. Play now contains Rubicon and the North Wales Rock Taster and Paid-For guides. North Wales Limestone Definitive (Taster) is coming soon to Play with the full guide to follow in both stores once the paper guide is completed.

Any thoughts on Salar at 7c+ by the way? Not done it myself but a few people I've spoken to seem to think this is harsh but fair, others think 8a - anyone have an opinion?

It's pretty height dependant, but I think it's as hard as any of the other rubicon 8as.

Its certainly height dependant but I'm not sure I agree with you past that. Either grade will have its critics.

On Pickford's logic: give it 8a. Everyone likes an 8a.

fair enough, it's not as if Rubicon is the centre of worldwide grade inflation now is it?
