Hi All, here's the quiz. It's a big one, so only a few tonight. More on Sunday night. You may need to zoom out!

D) Dave Pegg mADmAn
G) Ben, Hubble, rotated 90'

That better?
-
Yes and yes
-
3)

-
All correct, but one mark still available for the route on 6c, and the bonus mark is still up for grabs on 6d. (The bonus is for the 'exact' route name).
Hah! I did actually know that, but was taking the piss with my capitalisation, ooops ;)
-
is 5C the Winking Man at Ramshaw and the bonus is difficult because you have to be old enough to know it pre-ban?
-
It is Fiend. But can you name the route?
BTW, did you know the Rice Kemper Evans quote, or did you Google it (if that is possible?). I'm assuming the former......!
I've not marked your first batch of answers yet, because I can't open my answer Powerpoint, and I'm not sure about the Tremadog answer.
Bear with me....
-
1) e) Jerry, that thing at Tremadog
I thought it was :-
1(d) Moffatt on Psyche 'n' Burn (that thing at Tremadog)
1(e) Moffatt on Verbal Abuse at the Tor
2(b) Neil Bentley
2(c) Peter Whittaker
2(d) Gary Gibson
2(e) Still working on it.
3(a) Our Father?
Missing route on 6(c) is Beau Geste.
-
3A - Tom's Roof, Stoney??
6F - Michele Caminati??
8A - Cemetery Gates, The Cromlech
8C - Praying Mantis, Goat Crag
8E - DIY, Stanage
P.S. No I'm not that old....
P.P.S. Yes I know the RKE thing from the Stanage guide. American Vice Consul, bribed gamekeepers with booze, etc ;)
-
1C is annoying me, I've read it loads, and I've read the counter about some esoteric climb "there exists no pitch that is more in there" >:(
-
1) e) Jerry, that thing at Tremadog
I thought it was :-
1(d) Moffatt on Psyche 'n' Burn (that thing at Tremadog)
1(e) Moffatt on Verbal Abuse at the Tor
2(b) Neil Bentley
2(c) Peter Whittaker
2(d) Gary Gibson
2(e) Still working on it.
3(a) Our Father?
Missing route on 6(c) is Beau Geste.
All correct, as are Fiend's below (except Tom's Roof, which is Our Father)
-
1C is annoying me, I've read it loads, and I've read the counter about some esoteric climb "there exists no pitch that is more in there" >:(
It is the most out there pitch in the whole of....
....well, in the whole of the particular bit of the particular buttress it is situated on....
-
2(e) Airlie Anderson
I think I've got the missing ones of 6 and 8 too, but need to give some other people a chance (and go climbing, if everywhere isn't soaked!).
-
2(e) Airlie Anderson
I think I've got the missing ones of 6 and 8 too, but need to give some other people a chance (and go climbing, if everywhere isn't soaked!).
Correct with Airlie. Glad you enjoyed the anagrams. We've got some more coming up in Part 2 - anagrams of route names, some of which I was really quite proud of....!
Yes, it would be good to let others have a go. Fiend did get a bit carried away.... :spank:
-
Okay okay, it's not my fault no-one else is around!
1C Little Plum, Garage Buttress
-
1C Little Plum, Garage Buttress
Yep
-
1C Little Plum, Garage Buttress
Yep
Objection your honour!
"No pitch exists that is more 'out there'" was coined by Mark Hudon to describe the roof pitch on The Salathe Wall in the article Long, Hard and Free (http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1691970/Long-Hard-and-Free-by-Mark-Hudon-Mountain-79-1981). Jerry borrowed it, unconsciously or otherwise
Being in a position to compare El Cap. and Garage Buttress, I feel the original should stand.
-
But in a Peak Area quiz Duncan?
Also, whilst Salathe headwall may have exposure and a nice view, can it really compare to the outlook across abandoned industrial wastelands and the roar of chavs on motorbikes as they howl up the A623.....?
-
Very good
-
8D - T-rex
Thanks Neil.
-
8D - T-rex
Thanks Neil.
One out of a possible two.
You're welcome :)
Sorry Fiend has had most of the fun this time around. Gra is going to post the next batch up sometime tomorrow - I'm afraid I don't have the technology - so hopefully others will have chance for a go. I will ask him for an upload time and try to prewarn folk, but Sunday evening will hopefully be a time lots of people will be able to have a go.
Anyway, fear not - there are still a lot of questions to go.....
.....and I mean a lot. :-[
-
Correct with Airlie. Glad you enjoyed the anagrams. We've got some more coming up in Part 2 - anagrams of route names, some of which I was really quite proud of....!
Oops. I've just realised these are already up - Question 7. And none have been answered yet.... Anyone else like anagrams?
There are also a few other questions or part questions which no-one has got yet.
Neil
-
Yeah but at least I've left all the tricky ones....
-
7c. lord of the flies
7f. middle fell buttress
7g. tower ridge
stumped on the others
-
Yep - nice one John!
-
Okay, by my reckoning these are the ones still to be answered:-
1b & f
3f & h
4a & d
5c (route) & e
6e & f (route)
7a, b, d & e
8b & d(crag)
You will be pleased to learn that you will be spared Round 9, as that was the Mime Climbs round. You really had to be there....
Round 10 is audio clips from original interviews, so we may have to miss that too - unless Graham has the technology.
'Normal' questions resume at Round 11....
Neil
(Edited to add the ones I forgot!)
-
7a. strapadictomy
-
These anagrams are hard work! Having found "Overhang" quite quickly, it took me ages to find :-
7(e) Overhanging Bastion
and these two took even longer :-
7(b) A Dream of White Horses
7(d) Darkinbad the Brightdayler
For a Peak area quiz, there's a lot of non-Peak routes!
-
Nice one! I'm pleased to see those 'go down'.
Of course Peak routes don't always make the best anagrams.... ;)
Graham is going to post some more tomorrow evening. He might just post the lot, and then give the answers, say, a week later (if that would be okay?).
Monitoring the thread and verifying answers has proved rather time consuming (though Shark or any of the others who were there on the night) are more than welcome to join in :please:
Neil

Your others are correct, so D and G still needed.

It is indeed Sloper. Congratulations!
-
Come on then - loads of unanswered questions still...
....or is no one playing 'in' today...? :-\

Pretty certain 5e is Wings of Unreason too.

Froggatt Pinnacle - yes
AE or GB? Nope

Some missing ones from the first lot :-
6(e) Tom Randall - Nahhan (the thing near Make It Snappy)?
6(f) Someone had already guessed Caminati, I think it might be Superstition or The Promise at Burbage North
8(b) Blackpool Promenade at Almscliff?

6e - yep
6f - yep - it's the Pearson route, whichever that one is. The Promise...?
8b - Nope
Sardine & Wings? Yes and Yes. Well done!
-
8b - Golden Mile?
Am I the only one who needs to scroll left and right to see the questions?
Golden Mile? Indeed! (Which crag?). Of course the clue was in the picture, not only the tower, but also the section of lights in the middle which read "Golden Mile".... doh!
And no, you aren't the only one. That is what happens when you leave posting the quiz to a 50+ year old, rather than take it on yourselves, you bunch of reluctant teenage techies....

I think there are a few around, but seeing this is a Peak Quiz (although a lot of the answers aren't Peak based) I think there's one on Chee Tor.
-
Am I the only one who needs to scroll left and right to see the questions?
Have you tried zooming out!
From a 50+ non-techie!
-
16A The Thing, Cromlech?
-
That works Graham, need my bifocals to rad it now though.
17B - David Flanagan http://theshortspan.com/ (http://theshortspan.com/) :) (I know it's not, but sure it's one of the old school climbers - Collie?)
-
8b - Golden Mile?
Golden Mile? Indeed! (Which crag?).
I think there are a few around, but seeing this is a Peak Quiz (although a lot of the answers aren't Peak based) I think there's one on Chee Tor.
There is indeed. Good one Chris.
-
16A The Thing, Cromlech?
Correct!
-
17(d) is about Beau Geste, John Allen is the author (from the Extreme Rock essay)
17(c) sounds familiar - I wondered if it was Livesey from when he climbed with Hot Henry Barber, but it's not in the Extreme Rock essay for Dream Liberator (just checked) so probably wrong on that one.
-
Beau Geste correct.
17(C) needs more work...
-
re 17B - definitely old school - a v interesting guy - did so much in climbing and outside of it. As a clue, he ended up climbing with a wooden leg.
-
Winthrop Young
-
Winthrop Young
Yes! Nice one Chris (or did you Google it....?) ;)
-
Nope. Using reference docs (like Extreme Rock or the Internet) would be cheating.
I remembered it mentioned somewhere before;
http://boulderingireland.blogspot.co.uk/2011_02_01_archive.html (http://boulderingireland.blogspot.co.uk/2011_02_01_archive.html)
at the bottom (I've now googled it, obviously!)
-
Nope. Using reference docs (like Extreme Rock or the Internet) would be cheating.
I should point out that I knew the Beau Geste one without looking in Extreme Rock!
Re: 17(c) - totally wrong or in the right ballpark (wrong route maybe)? I don't remember the first bit of the quote, it's just the "While I'm not resting at the peg, he tells me he used it. I'm getting to like him." line that I thought was Livesey.
-
Re: 17(c) - totally wrong or in the right ballpark (wrong route maybe)? I don't remember the first bit of the quote, it's just the "While I'm not resting at the peg, he tells me he used it. I'm getting to like him." line that I thought was Livesey.
Right series of books. Wrong volume. Wrong crag. Wrong climber. Wrong vintage.
The quote is by a famous writer describing the second (I think) ascent of a famous route, in the presence of the first ascensionist......"he"!
Does that help?!
-
It's driving me mad 17(c). I remember that passage of text so vividly but can't remember which article. Is the route great wall?
-
Isn't 17c Ed Drummond on Great Wall in Hard Rock refering to Pete Crew who was talking him up it.
-
It's driving me mad 17(c). Is the route great wall?
It is Stu!
-
Isn't 17c Ed Drummond on Great Wall in Hard Rock refering to Pete Crew who was talking him up it.
Spot on. Drummond is describing his second ascent. First ascensionist Crew is on the ground watching and dispensing beta (even though beta is yet to be invented) & the legend that is Ken Wilson is there taking the photographs, which added extra authenticity to the Hard Rock essay.
-
Re Great Wall, Drummond's ascent was the 5th (according to Black Cliff). Dave Yates made the second ascent (abbing down and pre-placing the aid gear in the upper crack because he thought Crew had done that). Wilson's pictures of Crew's ascent are some of the most inspiring climbing pictures I had seen at the time. I doubted I would ever do the route, then of course it went free and I knew I'd never do it. A few years later I did it as my first route on Cloggy when I alt led it with Mike Browell (done in two pitches then). Halcyon days.
-
I actually wrote a letter to Mountain magazine to defend John Allen's free ascent that Ken Wilson had criticised due to use of chalk.
The risks we took when we were young. ;D
-
1 f - the Johnny slate route was The Quarryman, I think.
8d T Rex at Gogarth, of course.
Is the 4d bolt Fred Zimmerman at wherever FZ is - Caley?
13 a Suicide Wall done before Kipling Groove
13 b Central Buttress done before High Neb Buttress
13 c Wall of Horrors before Great Wall
13 d SW Cratcliffe before SW Bosi
13 e Gogarth done before Old Man OH
14 Pete Biven (Bosi), Peter Harding (Cratcliffe) and Chris Preston (Ogwen)
-
Johnny - the county in 15b was presumably Yorkshire. Limestone (e) should be made into cement, and I think all limestone routes are 6b with small holds, aren't they?
16(c) is Windhover overhanging the road
17(a) is Menlove Edwards, I think.
20(a) - is it Snowdon
(b) is Ben Nevis, presumably
(c) is Scafell, or maybe I mean Scafell Pike.
-
Can't make much impression on 21, I'm afraid, Neil, though I think the chairman in 21f is Paul Nunn, and is that Dennis Gray to his left? I can't place the speaker although he's very familiar indeed.
-

Quarryman & Gogarth - yes. Fred Z - no. That bolt is in the Peak.
Your answers to 13 and 14 are all correct. Good grasp of climbing history there John!
Neil
-
Johnny - the county in 15b was presumably Yorkshire.
Controversially correct!
Limestone (e) should be made into cement.
Not quite - what did Johnny used to climb on in his days in Manchester?
and I think all limestone routes are 6b with small holds, aren't they?
Johnny's not nearly so generous, I'm afraid!
16(c) is Windhover overhanging the road
17(a) is Menlove Edwards, I think.
20(a) - is it Snowdon
(b) is Ben Nevis, presumably
All 4 correct John.
(c) is Scafell, or maybe I mean Scafell Pike.
Wrong. I thought you would have known this.....?
-
Can't make much impression on 21, I'm afraid, Neil, though I think the chairman in 21f is Paul Nunn, and is that Dennis Gray to his left? I can't place the speaker although he's very familiar indeed.
It is Paul Nunn, but it isn't Dennis.
As for the speaker, you do know him....
-
Wow - having now googled the war memorial I thought I would have known it as well, but I really thought this was on SP. Right idea, wrong hill; SP does have one as well, but not this one.
On reflection is the speaker in 21F a young Neil Foster?!
And is 21B Yuji?
So I guess Johnny thought all limestone was 6a, and should limestone be made into, I don't know, underpasses? Road bridges? Bus stops?
-
On reflection is the speaker in 21F a young Neil Foster?!
I believe it is (or was).
And is 21B Yuji?
Yes, but which of the 5 climbers is Yuji (and who are the others)?
So I guess Johnny thought all limestone was 6a, and should limestone be made into, I don't know, underpasses? Road bridges? Bus stops?
These Johnny ones can only really be educated guesses, since I don't think anyone will have heard the interviews (though my fellow quiz-setter has the tapes!)
JD's limestone quote was even more derogatory than 6a, though the "a" bit is correct. He thought limestone should be made into the material which those underpasses and roadbridges he used to climb on were made of, rather than the structures themselves.
15D is a nice quote and rather less contentious!
-
21f Geoff Birtles on the left and is it Mark Hutchinson at the back.
-
21f Geoff Birtles on the left and is it Mark Hutchinson at the back.
Birtles - yes, but not Mark Hutchinson (though I can see what you mean).
Anyone remember "On Peak Rock"? It was compiled by the man in the background...
-
And is 21B Yuji?
Yes, but which of the 5 climbers is Yuji (and who are the others)?
I think the 4 seated climbers are Yuji, Ben Moon, Boone Speed and Jibe Tribout. The 5th one on the screen I thought was a younger Yuji but probably isn't.
-

Bingo! Spot on.
-
(c) is Scafell, or maybe I mean Scafell Pike.
Wrong. I thought you would have known this.....?
Given the names on the memorial, I'd guess it's Lakes/Fell & Rock related. If it's not Scafell, then Great Gable?
-

Great Gable - correct. Nice one!

Then Carl Dawson, presumably.
18b is vexing me; I know I've seen this book. It's not some edition or other of Portrait of a Mountaineer, is it?
-
Then Carl Dawson, presumably.
Indeed.
The photo was taken at one of the famous bolt debates. Anyone hazard a guess as to the which Peak venue had such a wood panelled room (and what it is called now?) - It isn't some byronic mansion - it was just a well known Peak hotel....
18b is vexing me; I know I've seen this book. It's not some edition or other of Portrait of a Mountaineer, is it?
Nope. It is the first edition of another famous biography.
