After destroying my DSLR, it looks like I'm getting insurance settlement based on random googling by assessor and finding this company sells the same DSLR for £400 less than any reputable UK Stores.

Should I be concerned? They look dubious, some trust pilot reviews say they are Hong Kong based. Be interested to hear any positive reviews.

A partial answer I’m afraid Chris.
Pre brexit I bought an iPhone from CameraWow - a similar HK based retailer.
It took about 10 days to arrive - and was fine apart from only having a 1 year warranty (as technically sold outside the EU) - which did stop me getting one repair done under warranty after 23 months (ugh..).
Tl;dr etc… check the warranty situation (if that’s important) and there may now be VAT pay now? Or it may be no different from 2-3 years ago.
Though if the insurance company are paying can it become their problem?

Do you mean the settlement is £400 less because the is guy is basing it on the cheapest dodgy looking company he can find?
If so, then yes - I'd be pushing back and asking for a UK based shop, full warranty etc.

A grey import is not a like for like replacement, refuse to accept it.

To be fair, the original was a grey import Chris, no? Hand delivered from the US via Yosemite ;-)
I'm racking my brains to think where we actually picked it up - was it San Fran?

Yeah, pretty much the above. It's the first thing that comes up on google, not exactly in depth research. For a reputable insurer (M&S) it feels a bit dubious. Original camera was delivered to your mate AY in San Fran. So technically it was a grey import (not that it's relevant here) but at least it was via one of the most reputable camera companies in the US, with a contact in the US if there were issues.
Thanks for the responses guys, confirms my suspicion. I'll push back.

Ah yeah! That's how it worked. The pizza we went out for that night cost about 3 days food for the rest of the trip haha. SF is priceeeeeey!
-
It is indeed!
Just pushed back, they agreed it looks a bit of a dodgy company, they have offered price from Jessops which is fortunately the only camera retailer left in Aberdeen now John Lewis isn't reopening.
-
Ah, except Jessops is closed too.
