Title: event: Hug a Newbie Week at UKB
Post by: shark on September 16, 2010, 11:21:01 am
It seems that UKB is an intimidating place for newcomers. We don't bite and welcome fresh meat posters.

It doesn't matter that you don't climb Font 8A and live in Sheffield though obviously it helps. UKB is the natural home for obsessed climbers who are either attached or unattached to pieces of string. You don't have to be boulderer to chat on UKB just a committed climber of whatever variety. You can express yourself freely on UKB and post pictures or videos using the smiley people  to make your points. You can even swear :o. Very little is censored here except trolling (i.e. deliberately winding people up for the sake of it) misogyny, racism, homophobia, violence etc. You are free to express an opinion but specific defamation (i.e. factually untrue statements against individuals or organisations) may land you (and us) in court. You can award +ve karma (wad points) to posters that have made you laugh, think or quietly applaud, or smite them with -ve karma (punter points) if they didn't.

 Here are some pointers:

 -       Register here (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php?action=register)

 -       Want to talk about routes ? Post on Chuffing (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,28.0.html) with sub-forums for shameless beta requests and posting new routes

 -       Bouldering? Post on Bouldering (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,1.0.html) also with sub-forums  for beta requests and posting new problems

 -       Want to report some climbing related news? Post on News (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,10.0.html)

 -       Cant do a one-armer? Post on Diet, training and injuries (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,4.0.html) and join Power Club (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,48.0.html) to make sure you stick to the advice

 -       Access situation at a crag? Post on Get involved: access, environment, BMC (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,57.0.html)

 -       Planning a trip abroad? Abroad (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/board,24.0.html)

 -       Add videos and photos to our Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/groups/UKBouldering) and Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/ukbouldering/pool/) groups

And lots more. We are also starting to generate content so if you have an idea for an article pm thesiger (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php?

action=profile;u=2073)

Some do's and don'ts:

 -       Do learn to use the quote function (http://ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/HowTo_use_Quotes) properly – you can then abuse it for comedy value

 -       If you are a refugee from UKC please don’t whine about that site here. It's tedious and causes us (the site owners) unnecessary complications

 -       Actually play safe and don't reference UKC/Mick Ryan at all - it's a minefield. There is a lot of historical antagonism that hopefully we can move on from. I did in one of my first posts and was lucky that  my thread (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10098.0.html) was only moved to the logpile (aka the shit heap) rather than get heaped with negative karma

 -       Don't boast - Dense (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=183) doesn't like it

 -       Don't worry if you get -ve karma points to begin with - it's all part of the initiation ceremony

 -       Make friends with Magpie (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1307) and post a picture of a fluffy animal on her thread (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10891)

So don your flame retardant UKB T shirt or hoodie - available here while stocks last (http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/index.php?prodCategory=Clothing) and get involved. By the way when I said we don't  bite I do, but I'm a shark and can't help myself.

You forgot to mention that "deliberate winding people up for the sake of it" is absolutely fine as long as the person on the receiving end is (Mc)Fiend.

There is also the UKB Wiki (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) that is (very) slowly evolving with resources/links/information on bouldering areas (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Venues), FAQs (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/FAQs), Glossary (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Glossary_of_Bouldering_Terms), finger injuries (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Pulley_Injuries_:_The_Science) and a list of web-cams (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/Useful_WebCams) near various climbing venues, etc.

If you want to post pictures then please, please, please read this (http://www.ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/HowTo_Embed_Pictures_to_UKBouldering).  Posting videos is pretty straight-forward, just copy the URL from the address page on the YouTube/Vimeo page where the video is hosted, the forum software works out the embedding code all on its own.

I guess it would be if you were looking for some where to tell the world you thought someone who was better than you is fat ...

You forget to mention that if you ask a question that's already been answered (because you haven't done a site search) slackers goes ape shit!

A crime I may be about to commit in diet, training and injuries.

Only if I know its been asked, there is tons of content prior to me joining and that I miss.

Not the only one guilt of pointing out duplicate threads/topics though.

I did tire of writing the same thing about how to post pictures when people couldn't, hence the Wiki page I wrote it up as.

Or even better, use this neat line in Google (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=search+here+site%3Aukbouldering.com).

I don't like the search function on UKB. It regularly breaks, you can't search too quickly after a previous search, and you can't search for words with less than three letters
Title: Re: Hug a newbie week at UKB
Post by: slackline on September 16, 2010, 09:49:05 pm
I wouldn't say the search function is broken really.  Its clearly not as effective as using 'site:ukbouldering.com' on Google to search the site, but its worth remembering that if you're viewing a particular forum then the search is restricted to that rather than all forums, which in itself can be very useful (although I'd still recommend the Google option most of the time).

I know it's what your comfy with, but would I would hope this little place isnt too hard to break into. FWIW there some MTB forums WAY hasher than here......

No scale or numbers on the gender tab, but my eyes are telling me there's only a minor excess of males.

Quite how it resolves usernames like mine into a sex when there is no listing of sex in user profiles would be interesting.

Thinking about it I lurked here for a long time before posting anything, to get a feel for what the site is like. I've since found the site to be very welcoming in a sort of piss-takery sort of way. UKBs best asset for me is the wealth of knowledgeable people on the forums, and there is usually excellent advice on injuries, training and all sorts without having to sort the wheat from the chaff.
Can be fairly intimidating on first inspection, but once you're used to it, it's fine.

Hello,

I'm new too. I’ve been lurking for a while so thought it about time I piped up.
Think I know a few of those who post on here having been to font in april with a bunch of scousers.

I’ll probably spend some time asking stupid questions about training which have been answered a hundred times before.

This is probably a very very bad idea and will end up with me being mightily smoted.

I joined UKB and before i was aware of newbies advice, i mentioned another site which i now know must never be referenced in any form whatsoever.

I have tried to smite my karma but can't figure out how.

Would somebody please smite me 1 point.

I know i will probably be much smited, but in my defence-

i have added hopefully useful shizzle to the wiki,  i have passed on some good shit on someUKB freecycle, for which i got no + karma, and most importantly, i have tried to make friends with magpie with my cuteness quotient.

Regards

Morning!

I'm a long time lurker and occassional poster if I think I can be useful. I surf both sides of the channel (using the same username) as I'm a logbook geek! Over the years the gooDADadvice, good books and films threads have been a lifeline to me and the DFB has been regularly perused!

 Hi again Whealibob

I am much more of a newbie than yourself, and am happy to report no bumming incidents yet!

But just in case, i now only climb at night in full camouflage, and never, never tell anyone at a crag that i post as Crimp.

My experiences so far- helpful, friendly, informed, good banter without overstepping the mark, well moderated, focussed forum. And best of all, i ain't been bummed!

I'll come clean and say I've lurked here for years. Better news I reckon and better meaty discussion / arguments - Simpson vs Heason ages ago, the Mick Ryan years and more recently enjoyed the asking for proof Gaskins thread a lot.
I'm near Bristol and have never lived in Sheffield.
My only claim to fame is that I climbed a lot with SA Chris when he was in Bristol due to us both being ex Leeds Uni CC. Not seen him in years mind... Hi Chris, its Sam here.

Only really got into it in final year - 97/98 and then two years after graduation but was out climbing in Yorkshire and the Peak for all of my time up there which was 95 to about 2001...

I did make it onto cover of the last LUMCC journal which was quite a moment!

Were you there too?

I'm afraid I'm bespeckled and don't have red hair! Think you might be confusing me with Chris Brown...

Anyway, I climbed a lot with Nibs and Toby, well equal parts climbing and smoking. Also with Jim (he was president one yr) and Ian, Nibs' bro.

I'm sure we've probably been in the same room under the influence either a house party, upstairs at the packhorse or at an annual dinner. I'm still in touch with Nibs et al. They are still either in Yorkshire or moved up to the Lakes.

I've been going to Dartmoor a lot lately to try and rekindle my love of the grit but it never seems to be quite as good. it certainly bites back a lot harder... Better than the Avon and Somerset bouldering though - absolutely dreadful.

I've just realised that I first signed up in 2006, that's over 6 years of lurking... Is that a record?!?

I'm officially coming out as a proper poster now so prepare yourself for lots of inane questions about esoteric southern Peak 7as that nobody has climbed since their first ascent (probably by Bonjoy - i.e. more like 7b!!!)  :tease:

You haven't actually got a car have you? I used to like the tors but too brutal on the skin for working aything too hard.

"I used to like the tors but too brutal on the skin for working aything too hard"

For that read, anything involving the use of the hands!

The first time i tried to climb a crack on Dartmoor i jumped off shouting why would anyone do that. I thought someone had lined the crack with cheese graters and filled the back of it with razor blades. I learnt tape up fingers and knuckles well, jump off don't slide off, and every time a new dartmoor guide comes out buy shares in germolene, elastoplast, and surgical tape.

Now when i want to flay my skin in a masochist fit, i just pick any crack at Huntsham. One in particular, a VS, rudacious rudolph i think, isn't so much a climb, more a feat of extraordinary pain endurance. Like trying to get a dozen very angry cats out from under a sofa with your bare hands. I finally got up it wearing heavy duty gardening gauntlets taped firmly to my wrists.

I never really had much of a problem on routes (only done about a dozen on the tors) but for bouldering it's brutal on the tips.

"Like crimping on hypodermics".

Rather embarrassingly I've got two cars (one is hanging on for dear life thougho) so no longer blagging lifts. Although I do miss your work boon of free petrol!

Think Dartmoor is often about long terms projects. You can only try certain things a couple of times so have to keep coming back to them. Finally bagged The Wave recently, that's taken years of effort but felt good when I got it. Went to Bell Tor recently too, small and perfectly formed.

Fair play. The endless driving on over-caffeinated sugary drink company never sounded that good.

I was regailing the 'lost keys at the Roaches' story only the other day. It never fails to produce dropped jaws. I've certainly never been 6.5 hrs late for work again...

Yeah, that redefined the word clusterfuck. At least you didn't have to go all the way back to the Roaches with spare keys to get the car.

If you really want to know - shurt and I went up to Roaches on a weekend and stayed in the Rock Cottage with some mates. On Sunday we wandered up and down to far skyline etc and when we got round to going home in the evening I couldn't find my keys, must have fallen out of rucksack at some point. Gone. I tried AA etc, but as they said it was non- emergency it would cost a couple of hundred quid to get car on a carloader truck and taken to Bristol. Fuck that. So plan B was - kip on verge. Next morning (after a shit night) we walked to Upper hulme I hitched into Leek, got bus to stoke and train to bristol, got taxi to letting agent, got spare keys for flat, got into flat, got spare keys for car, got taxi back to station (all with same taxi - guy must have thought I was nuts!), got train back to stoke, got bus back to leek, hitched back to upper hulme, walked back to car, got in car and drove home to bristol.

I think shurt hitched to bristol and went straight to work?

Anyway, not an experience to be repeated.

Holy shit!

I feel traumatised just reading your tale.

Couldn't you have just torched the car!?

The insurance would have paid out and got you safely back to bris.

Just to add my side of story. I walked/ran to Leek all the way from the Roaches as no one would pick me up. Then a bus to Stoke. I was so tired when I got to Stoke train station I got on the next train to Bristol as advised by a member of Virgin Trains and promptly fell asleep. Chris and I slept next to a stone wall. I was awoken by the ticket man so I asked for a single to Bristol. He just replied next stop London Euston and informed me that I had to biy a ticket at the peak rate of 64 quid. Cue a stand up row with the ticket office at Euston before they agreed to get me to Bristol as had been given bum advice at Stoke. They could only do this by re routing me back through Birmingham on Virgin.
A pretty shit Monday morning all in all...

Esentially, just go with it.
Try to avoid tit-for-tat, i suspect there was a trigger-happy response, on an overheated thread.
If I remember, there is a certain period/forum level required before you can Wad/Punter with Karma.

This is usually a chilled environment.

Except Dense.

Dense is brutally blunt.

You can only give Karma +ve or -ve once you've hit 100 posts IIRC...

Points mean prizes absolutely nothing. They weren't undeserved today in my own opinion, but that aside, it's all part of the forum game. Go with it or don't play. Just don't get bent out of shape.
By the way,  :icon_welcome:

Ask Andy E how to survive, we ripped the shit out of his naive, uninformed posts for a couple of years. Just look at what a well rounded individual and invaluable member of UKBouldering he's turned into.
