Apart from all the other ills in the world, one thing that does piss me right off is the amount of rubbish at crags. It is not always bad, eg Apparent North today was spotless, but it is very common to find a light smattering of rubbish around whatever venue one visits (Peak, at least). And don't get me started on the plastic bags full of dog shit at the Roaches the other day! Fume.
Anyway. In the spirit of "Donkeylines/Tickmarks Hall of Shame", I offer you the "Other Peoples Rubbish" thread.
Pick it up and post it up.

Having had a couple of bits of litter escape my pockets while topping out on windy crags this year, I’ve since been trying to develop the ‘pick up three bits’ habit every time I go out as penance.
Compared to many euro venues I reckon the UK’s crags are pretty litter free (with a few near urban exceptions like Black Rocks and Shipley Glen), remarkably so given the high user numbers. That said if every climber got in the habit of taking home a couple of bits they’d quickly become actually spotless. Having a rucksack with external pockets that you don’t mind getting manky helps to make this a less annoying task.
That reminds me, there’s been a wheelie bin on the path over the river from Chee Tor all this summer!

Nicely impressive pile of flytipped rubbish at Denham the other week. As I couldn't really fit it in me back pocket I got the council to shift it, it's now gone, thankfully!

Hobson Moor today. First time I've been there in TIME. I was surprised by how unbombed out it looked. I'd heard about peeps setting fires next to the rock etc and was expecting it to be even more of a graffitied choss pit than my last visit back in the day, but it was actually in pretty good nick.
Never the less, Mrs Erm Sam was inspired to wander around gathering rubbish while I reaquainted myself with the traverse.

nice one, i've been trying to make a point of this too. Been trying to continue the trend when out running as well, although rather less portage space in running shorts than a rucksack, surprisingly.
A mate turned up at Malham a while ago toting a nappy which he had public spiritedly cleared from the approach path. That's some dedication.

On UKB's ex-sister site UKCaving (now under new management) they have a scheme whereby their advertisers donate prizes which are then awarded to anyone going the extra mile on conservation/ litter picking etc. Sounds like it is working really well over there, could we do something similar?

Loads of litter at Wimberry a few weeks ago. Bad enough at the crag, mostly instant barbeques and bottles chucked off the top but also climbers finger tape :spank: but the worst bit was the grassy area down by the river where I filled one of those big Ikea 'rope' bags with rubbish, and there was still more to pick up.
I emailed the various people who own and manage the land, but no one was particularly interested. So probably worth taking a bin bag next time you're up there and doing your bit, even if it's only at the crag.

A cautionary tale.
Last year whilst walking out of Guisecliff, a friend did his bit for the crag by picking up a can of Stella from the pathside. Tipping it up to empty its contents and giving it a good shake, we were hit by a vile odour.
The unmistakable reek of human shit. Great brown lumps of it falling out of the can, splashing over his trainers. How I laughed.

That might beat me and Moff. We've done a lot more at Woodhouse Scar but over quite a few years now so probably can't quite beat that as an annual individual rate. We always clear rubbish... those charity clothing bags are so useful and sit in our car and we have been through hundreds. I'd advise gardening gloves to be part of a standard crag cleaning kit (in the bottom of the rucksack) if any glass is around (or worse... watch out for needles on urban crags) We have also cleared some serious volumes of rubbish from Black Rocks, Pleasley and Shipley Glen amongst numerous other venues over the years.

Did Raven Tor end to end this arvo as a distraction from the heat.. Just one carrier bag mainly tape and broken laces plus a few bottle tops and a couple of tab ends. Quite a heartening 20 minutes to find so little rubbish really.

once, my ex girlfriend asked a car full of 5 not to park in the disabled space at curbar. They continued to verbally abuse her to the point I had to threaten them... so they walked off up the hill
Later that day on the way out, we found they had left McDonalds for 5 in the mini cave near Walk on By.... absolute fuckers. How can anyone want to visit Curbar for lunch then do that?
It took almost a big bag to clear it up!
Don't even get me started on climbers & fag butts though :( :(

Pisses me off how some smokers don't seem to consider dog ends litter, just carry a tin! Fucking disgusting picking them up, especially as I didn't have a bag so had to wrap them in the tape from my wrist after I was done climbing.

I picked up a lot of glass at the tor left it all on the rock you can sit on by the cave as i forgot about it when i left haha. Half a job! Better than having it left all in the gravel. Not all of it was rounded either. Some of it was sharp! Use a rope bag at the tor guys!

Picked up a carrier bag load of litter from around Higgar last weekend. Some kind soul/s had had a nice Sainsbury picnic then left the 'bag for life' and all the packaging at the side of the path in the bracken.

Did a sweep of Stanage Popular and Plantation (the crag not the boulders) last night. Mostly finger tape, fag butts, electrician's tape and those markers from the end of ropes.

Forgot to get a pickie, but I took 4 big green binbags of garden waste that had been dumped over the fence at the Lady Cannings layby back into Sheffield and binned.

Fine effort sir. I've collected stuff on the way back from millstone before (including numerous shit bags) only to find there is no bin at the car park so had to carefully put them in the footwell. Seems crazy that thereis no bin at such a honey pot place.

I believe the logic is that having a bin would require council resources to empty it regularly, otherwise it would fill up and overflow, blow around and litter the surrounding area. By not having one the expectation is that people simply take home what they bought with them.

Another member of this parish (according to FB) had issues where an ice cream van / stall owner wouldn't let him dispose of litter he'd picked up nearby in his bin.

It's an issue for sure. I filled one bag myself then found two massively overfilled bags of barbecue rammel hidden just out of sight near the Keyhole Cave clearing. I don't know if it was the barbecuers themselves who'd bagged it up or a fellow do-gooder but they hadn't been bothered to carry them out- they were too heavy to carry without decanting their contents into other bags anyway.
As I took it all to the carpark there was a massive (like 50-60 people) gathering forming at the top of the edge for what I assume was a birthday party or similar (middle class families with helium balloons ready to release amongst other things) and I was muttering under my breath about how they'd better take their litter home.
The next morning there was a new, neatly-tied full bin bag left at the car park entrance for non-existent binmen to collect. :wall:

Picked up 4 bags of dogshit by the gate at Topley Pike yesterday (no convient tree nearby to dangle them from :-\), and filled a couple of plastic bags with rubbish from the layby.
Talking of those balloons/lanterns, when I went to Turningstone Edge a few years ago, there were loads of them at the top of the crag. Anyone else noticed this? Just a coincidence there were loads there at once or do they regularly end up there due to aspect/prevailing wind direction etc?

We found a balloon from the University of York on Scafell this summer. Wish we'd sent it to them in the post now to allow them to dispose of it properly.

Was at Woodhouse Scar on Sunday and even for there it's in a right state - loads of rubbish, and even a couple of roadworks barriers that have been bunged over the edge down to the crag.
There was also broken glass on the tops of a fair few boulders round the warmup slabs at the top end.
I first went to Woodhouse as part of a crag cleanup a few years back - what would be the ins and outs of organising another such thing? Approach the BMC?

Nice to see this thread going strong. Saw a post on the Facebook today of some fine people who cleaned up jess' roof at the cliff. I've started stashing unwanted shopping bags in coat pockets and rucksacks instead of the kitchen this year so I've always got one handy.three bags and a child's inflatable from the river bank last week. We also did a beach at home in Devon this summer with the kids. When we went home the environment agency were there to do the same as us. They were amazed how little rubbish there was and were chalking it up as a success story; then we handed them two bin bags and emptied our pockets of bits of plastic lighters and other misc pieces. All good fun. More pieces of plastic in the sea than fish forecasted in the next 20 years they reckon. Fewer jonnies and towels floating about though these days so props to the EA.

Collected a bin liner full of stuff strewn around the rivelin car park yesterday including a blue bin bag tied to the gate. Don't know if this is actually collected or not but seemed like a good idea to take it as it was overflowing and would probably get ripped open by foxes etc anyway. Got a load of bin juice on the parcel shelf of my car, so much for positive karma!

Collected a bin bag's worth at the parking for Anston stones, there's still more there - mostly drinks cans and bottles. There's currenty a skip in the parking opposite so if anyone goes there in the near future it is very easy to dispose of any waste you pick up.

You'll have to use your imagination to conjure up an image of quite a lot of old finger tape, fag butts, baked bean tin and black poo bag (found just by the green traverse) amongst other plastic bits and bobs from a quick circuit of Pebble, Green Trav, Business Block.
It struck me that the largest proportion was discarded finger tape and fag butts, which suggests some climbers dont consider it 'litter' >:(
(and there were climbers with a dog too, maybe it was a genuine 'forgot to pick up the poo bag' moment :slap:).

Although there is still quite a lot of broken glass (and other litter) around, so be careful if you are up there. Disappointing but not really surprising since it keeps growing in popularity as a picnic spot. Although they do seem to have stopped peoples using disposable BBQs. Was loads of people around last night including a couple policemen, guess they are worried about moor fires no the weather is hot.

A thanks to Outside for the annual litter pick event. My fave find was a bunch of hairspray bottles from an old fire under Puttrel's on Wharncliffe (kids trying to make explosions?). Also a different type of explosions were evident with loads of used nappies.

On the way back down from Wharncliffe one evening last winter the local youths were setting up for a rave in one of the tunnels on the approach path, which was ankle deep in muddy water, good effort I say ! :punk: And no litter in the area the next time I went past a couple of days later. I'm usually pleasantly surprised how tidy the place is given its location.

My dog did 3 poo’s On the way to the crag the other day. The first two I picked up and binned in special bags. However I’d ran out with the last one so gathered it up in a big rhubarb leaf and chucked it in the bushes. No harm done I say, what are people’s opinions on this?

The dog does poo quite a lot. I think it’s the Bakers Meaty Chunks and Pigs ears combined. I prefer to use the word poo rather than s*** if you don’t mind. Swearing is a bit unnecessary. We all have waste products, even climbers.

On walk the other day, and found some manky old balloons and ribbon wrapped around barbed wire fences, one set pink, one set blue. Assume released on a happy occasion, wedding or birth of a child. if the wire hadn't got it, 10m further and it would have been in the sea.
Celebrate a happy occasion by killing off some marine life!

There seems to be a lot of litter in the Peak at the moment, so it’s worth taking a bag or two out. Mainly disposable BBQs and beer cans.
There’s also quite a lot of BBQ gear, gas bottles, windbreaks scattered about the carparks with campervanners. Had my eye on a nice thick bit of foam that would make a good sit start pad, but the owner had moved it back into their vehicle by the time I got back from my walk.

Yesterday, on path from Burbage N to B South picked up packets from biscuits, massive chocolate bar wrapper, crisps and pop bottle. Pristine environment and people just throw rubbish onto the ground. Unbelievable.

Collected 4 bottles, 3 cans and some crisp packets scattered around Curbar yesterday. Looked like people had been lobbing the bottles off the top of the edge judging by the smashed glass around the bottles too...

I think there’s a lot of people, especially younger people, coming out to the country at the minute as they can’t hang out in there normal spots in the cities. Whilst I don’t condone there littering I can understand that they have little comprehension that they are doing anything wrong. They live in areas that are generally full of litter, where littering is the norm and also where it’s eventually cleared up by the council.
Not sure the countryside code is taught much in the cities.

Sadly true gme, not considered that. No pubs, no footy to watch, no Maccy D to hang out in, no chain restaurants and coffee shops, so they spew out to countryside and beaches where they are actually allowed to go.

There were families and adults out at Burbage yesterday, so their mentality isn't just youthful lack of awareness.
As you say, I think there is just a general disconnect, an 'I'm just passing through' mentality. No interest in what it might look like afterwards.
+ we need more societal engagement. After all, everyone has an absolutely equal right to access the place. Climbers don't have exclusive ownership.

Adults who live in the same circumstances will be just as likely to behave the same hence why not just youths. More to do with the surroundings and culture you live in than age.
I hate to see them all labeled as scum, idiots chavs etc as i dont think thats really the case. Its societies fault to an extent. If you live in a shit tip you dont notice it nor your own effect on it, however if you live in a beauty spot you get wound up by one fag butt.
I honestly dont think the people littering are going out to nice places because they are nice places, they are going out to be able to do what they cant do in the cities.

I got a medium-sized bulldog clip and tied it to the strap of my rucksack so it hangs at my left hip.
You can clip a litter-bag in there and it holds the bag shut and leaves you with both hands free while you're walking, and it's easy to unclip the bag, stuff something in, and re-clip it again.
I tend to litter-pick my way back from crags and this makes it more convenient.

I always do the https://www.take3.org/ and pick up as much litter as i can carry along with my longboard (plus negotiating the steps they have barriered off at Aberdeen beach!). Get some strange looks when you do it though! especially when one of the things you pick up is an industrial glove.

Picked up a quite a number of pieces of discarded finger tape at Wimberry yesterday walking up to the fish boulder. Really disappointing. Climbers should really know better. It’s bright white and doesn’t break down quickly (at all?).
Big tick marks too, that I brushed off. Ironically they hadn’t even ticked the best bit of the fish arête undercut. :slap:

I was getting through so many plastic bags (and starting to feel guilty about that, even with recycled ones) that I upgraded to an ultra-light cordura foldable bucket.
Waterproof so I can pick up drippy cans and so forth without having them leak all over my stuff, doesn't get ripped by pointy things or tear because of heavy things.

Piss boiled a week or so ago. Walked past some guys sea fishing on way to bouldering spot, had a chat with the about much biting etc. On way back, ledge was covered in bits of line, there was a plastic bin bag left (which I assume they had frozen mackerel in for bait, as there were bits lying everywhere) a couple of rancid old towels and some sandwich wrappers. I managed to collect up the lot and carry it plus 2 pads over wet slippery rocks. If fishermen can't care about the sea then I really do fucking despair.

A bit like some farmers - call themselves the custodians of the land but their land is actually trashed and covered in rusting old machines.

Yeah I know Industrial fishing is a bastard for making a mess, I've lost count of how many bits of nylon net I've picked up, as well as the plastic crates they stack fish in.
Individual fishermen are different to the industry as a whole though. Like comparing an allotment grower to a farmer.

You're right of course Chris. After years working as an upland ecologist I'm just a cynic - the oft-claimed notion that those involved in the traditional land or water based activities like fishing, shooting, farming actually care about the resource they rely on is sadly often nonsense.

It is definitely recyclable but I believe there is a cost to the producer to get rid of it due to the level of contamination of organic matter on the plastic. From my experience the value of waste plastic has decreased over the last few years so it has probably become more expensive to dispose of.
No profession is immune from shitty behavior; I have seen plenty of waste left behind from ecological surveys.

That's sad to hear. Most I've worked with have been fairly sensitive to waste and litter. Even offshore (where bad habits rub off quickly).

I was walking down the high street today and some 'orrible sod had posted some far right and antisemitic stickers on a bin.
I reported it to the police and the council's graffiti removal team using a pair of handy online forms. It took about 10 minutes.
I had a call this evening from the bobby who was attending. I'd expected the police response to be limited to recording it as a hate incident, but the officer wanted to know how recently they had appeared - the intention was to take fingerprints and check CCTV to try and identify a culprit.
I just wanted to share this in case anybody else comes across similar stuff. It is worth reporting and action is taken.

The bad landing boulder, at curbar, was in a sorry state this afternoon. There was the usual litter, finger tape, soggy socks and tick marks, but also a whole carrier bag of discarded food and wrappings stuffed between boulders, a one metre by 20cm splurge of bright white spilled liquid chalk (I thought it was paint at first) and the worst attempt at a patio I have ever seen, seemly made by partially dismantling the wall of the bivi spot.
I picked up the litter, brushed the tick marks and did my best with the liquid chalk using my toothbrush (it’s still a big smear but should hopefully wash off with the next rain now).
I couldn’t rebuild the bivi wall, but I thought it might make a nice warm up for someone when they’re next there.

Sorry, I'm not going to reply directly to some of the great posts above, but it's always really good to be made aware of the state of crags out there, and other places - and the efforts made to clear them up. :thumbsup:
This post is about two years (really?!) overdue.
First of all, we've lost a Neil. If it's you, please 'fess up to an amazing effort, clearing the river bank at the end of Leyburn Road in Sheffield.
There are now a few separate groups of litter pickers in Sheffield, and certainly where we are in Nether Edge in Sheffield, there's an increase in efforts to protect the urban landscape.
A couple of years ago, I cleared the slope to the river Sheaf with Justin Petifer. We were planning to do this again, in conjunction with Sheffield litter pickers, but mystery Neil stepped in for a solo effort. I'll try to get more recent photos.

As a counterpoint to my last post on this thread, we saw a family on Sunday, doing a fantastic job litter picking on the path to mother cap and the surprise view car park. They were there ages and gathered loads. The dad proudly told us that his daughter had ticked Conan too. If anyone knows them, give them a pat on the back.

Went for a walk up Roseberry Topping this morning (as my calf is currently too knackered for running). The wild garlic may only just be starting to bloom but it's already looking like a bumper year for that other woodland favourite - I collected 12 bags of dog shit on the way back down, plus 3 drinks bottles and a fag packet.
No photo I'm afraid; a man with a carrier bag of dog shit gets enough weird looks without then taking pictures of it.

Today I carried down from Heather Terrace on Tryfan: one Regatta Festival pop-up tent, two bags of rubbish containing, among the obvious things like fag butts and drinks bottles, a near full box of teabags and another of coffee sachets, a kilogram bag of sugar, and a dressing gown.
There is still another tent up there, with the poles exploded out of it making them very awkward to carry (snapping them is probably the answer).
They failed to find a decent camping spot (I don't think there is one on the Heather Terrace), but they did pay homage to the place by trying to make a fire out of some sprigs of live heather.

And while I'm at it, a couple of weeks ago when I pulled up at the Jerry's Roof layby in the Pass, there was a family having a barbecue on the other side of the wall, by the river. We smiled and nodded at each other and I said that smells good. Half an hour later, they drove away in their posh car, leaving two cooling disposable barbecues and every scrap of rubbish.

Last summer I saw a big Asian family group doing similarly a few yards up the road, over the wall from the Cromlech Boulders. There must have been 8-10 people and 2 or 3 barbecues on the go.
When they finally packed up they left the place spotless. :clap2:

It seems to be a thing, I've seen quite a few Asian families having picnics by the river in the Pass. Word must have got out in the community somewhere that it's a good scene.

It's the instagram alfresco tour - rock up to Pigeons Cave on the Orme for lunch on the scenic ledge. Dispose of lunch garbage into the sea. A post-lunch dip in the Llanberis Pass infinity pool is just the tonic for the 'gram.. before moving on to a riverside dinner under the Cromlech. Leave bag of dinner rubbish for the Llanberis Pass garbage collection authorities (that don't exist) to clear away. A quick turd under Cromlech Roof Crack (fair).. then back to Bolton for bedtime. Biased much? Yep. But it's how it is.

I actually stepped in a human turd at the Cromlech boulders last year. Inconsiderate fuck didn't leave a pile of bogroll to flag the spot. Unlike whoever's been using the Ultimate Retro Party facility lately, which looks like someone's shorn a sheep in there.

Walked round the top at the amazing tree boulder down Churnet last weekend and spotted the remains of a fire :furious: and the resulting detritus shoved into a little cave. Came back yesterday with bags and friends and packed out a crate's worth of empty Stella bottles, same again of Desperados, BBQ grill, all the shit that goes with it and a sodden, rotting duvet :blink:. Towers goers, going off the placcy bags also left behind. At least they made it easier for us to carry out for them.

This thread is good reminder to take the 3 plastic bottles out from my bouldering mat i picked up on the coast yesterday. They were pretty minging, I didn't check contents.
