Plenty more were that came from. Here's one a few years later (I think summer of '91): me on Pagan at Gogarth in my first pair of lasers (not the best shoe for serious ledge shuffling).

These two are in the UKB gallery. I've two more on my PC that would go in this thread
I'm just praying to god its not meyou gonna have to pray to a higher power than that AP - nicks up above (first ascent shot i think)

Shit. Well there I was having my first coffee of the morning only to end up spitting it all over the monitor in a mixture shock, shame, horror, embarrasment and pissing myself laughter!! Mark, I thought that pic was long gone...but no!!! one of my many, many hair crimes has come back to haunt me!!
Proper old skool!
I don't know what's scarier, Ron's gigantic head or worryingly pointy pouch...
as with will, these are as old as mine come. Please excuse the bad quality and random photos, they are scans from a collage my parents gave me for my 21st.

the magazine that reviewed drugs? The 90s one I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.
Yeah, I remember them. I didn't get a leech with my Kendos and ended up having a right old argument with the La Sportiva Customer Care Centre. Eventually they backed down and sent me a centipede as compensation. I have to say I was disappointed and have never bought another pair of La Sportivas.
Also Ben (sorry for brief hijack) did you ever find any copies of the magazine that reviewed drugs? The 90s one I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.
Due to the hot dry climate in South Africa, the leeches would die within hours of application. A bit of an oversight from La Sportive, I thought, insufficient product testing. But if you sent a dead leech to the local distributor, they would exchange it, free of charge, for half a dozen much hardier ticks. You still had to pay postage though.
Here's one of CJD making the first ascent of Whiskey Bitch (from a sitter if memory serves me right, so quite hard, possibly V9/7c) on Pill Box Wall in '97 with Higg spotting. I'm liking the homemade pad very much.

Wasn't tthis one in the old 1978 Froggatt guide (my first bible by Dave Greg!?)
I also have vague memories of a very young youth asking for a top-rope to be put up on Consenting. Maybe Whispering Nic has a better memory as I'm sure he was there that day as well.Sounds familiar, thought the youth wanted to get on 7th Ardvark though. Who were the Shuffield fannys in the Listers who told us we needed a couple of years to climb 7c?

No, its the direct finish to Charlotte Rampling, doable but will be bold!....and reachy. If you're >6ft it's a tricky deadpoint, if you're <6ft it's an all points off dyno. Still eminently doable though, even for the smaller folk and an excellent bit of climbing.

especially since its just been patioedI rearranged the boulders on CR a bit as a wet day activity about two weeks back, but the landing under the crux of the project is still pretty dodgy. I heard on the (racist) grapevine that Welford figured a static way of doing the crux by bear-clawing the multi mono cluster.

More GPH trivia. [Warning: Joe look away now, this doesn't concern you.] He once smashed up my neighbours bird table at a party after his coat had got burned. Love how you have the highball progression that part of the crag: Syrett's roof, Bancroft's Roof, Orchrist.

I remember being prepared for the worst and then just stopping in mid-air. You'd literally plucked me out of the air. I'm not a big guy but damn.

I think E grades for sport routes should be brought back (just to see the shit storm it would cause on Cocktalk).
Quality 8b+ in Ballets.
My mate had one of those chequered harnesses the Dave Pegg is wearing (was it the Pat Littlejohn?) I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
At a guess, I'd say something around the Via Media area at the Popular End - that direct start to Via Dexter maybe?
Sure JB will be along in a bit to give the knowledge...
It's a Gunfighter.
I think this is probably the oldest chuffing footage I've ever seen (previous being an ascent of The Old Man of Hoy broadcast from 1960 something I think, but there's probably older stuff around?).
I'm getting Chrome malware warnings for the Peak site you linked to, slackers. Suggest people avoid that site. :-(
There is this archive footage of climbing in t'Peak (http://www.yfaonline.com/node/8905), which is probably of a similar age.
My browser's flagging this link as 'dangerous'.
I think the Arthur Dolphin clips are also in Best Forgotten Art, haven't found it online yet.

Whilst you're all struggling with the Stoney one, here is another:
The route is easy to identify (but hard to flash). The leader was hideously strong, somewhat under-rated, and more-or-less unknown now. The guy watching the proceedings was not quite as strong, never knowingly under-rated, and still famous. He failed to top-tope this E3 in 1980 though!
Is it Neb Direct, Tim Freeman and Jerry?
Quiz time: what route and what famous-to-be Yorkshire sport wad taking his time on it?

...
Not got time to add descriptions so have fun guessing who/what they are.
I think they've been in touch with Geoff Birtles who has passed them on, not 100% about that though. I think Geoff has the original club book containing some FA's and other info from around that period.
We'll see.
3. Looks like Instant Karma or maybe the other (harder) route that goes through that roof / nose to the left of Fidget. Maybe it was superseded by the harder of the two listed in the current guide?
We still have that very same concrete fingerboard that the portly gentleman is hanging on to in the crypt @ AWCC Liverpool. We regularly get people up in the shop trying to buy one instead of the beastmakers.

Love it!
In '92 I had:
Strange purple Karrimore Hot Rock rucksack tick
Boreal Aces (when they were really good boots) tick
Tiny 'oops just popped out' shorts nope, even at age 12 I had the decency to cover myself up.
ps more pics of Donson please
I think I gave my Aces to Will Hunt for a "retro" day out.
It's Dan Donovan
I climbed with Andy a fair bit in the late 80s, especially at Avon, which had a great scene back then and, probably unsurprisingly, bred a particular type of ultra bold tradder. Andy exemplified this breed - great company too. Still at it in Colorado.

[Thanks for the correction, JWI: living in a bilingual Japanese/ English household you would think I would get it right!]
Of course.
IIRC Hotwalls was vertical ... the bog wall just a steep slab. And higher and much crimpier.
I pretty much started climbing at the seawalls in Pompey, I used to dream about being able to sit in one of those alcove/ window things. I only ever managed to get up some of the easy stuff, but started to get stong and badly lacerated fingers, sadly lost by 15 years of inactivty. I even found the topo recently for a real trip down memory lane. I miss that place.
Ratho?
Brilliant.
Nic Sellars: A true modern climber with little interest in traditional routes other than classic cracks. Has Egyptianed his awe-inspiring frame up a lot of classic sport routes in Britain and France including Mecca 8b+, Dalliance 8b+ and perhaps most impressively La Rose 8b in an afternoon.
I think its in one of the FRCC guides (Gable and Pillar; new Scafell; Select)?

Guess the fashion bit came off the back of the strikes.
Some of us were wearing Donkey jackets when Dexy’s Midnight Runners were the Killjoys.

Nah, Dexy's Midnight Runners
Donkey Jackets were a 70s staple for proper workers. “The 1980s were...when some middle class students began to sport donkey jackets to look more proletarian (https://creaseslikeknives.wordpress.com/2016/12/28/guest-post-bring-back-the-donkey-jacket/)”. I had a superior all wool one in the late 70s issued to me when I worked in a steel works. It supposed to protect against hot metal splashes (the real risk is being run over by a truck so nowadays everyone wears High Viz coats).

I found mine in a bin at Coalite at Askern when we were retiling the coal hoppers. It had plastic/ rubber shoulder protector. It take a bit of beating and airing to get rid of the smell of coal dust.
Mine was a Gleeson one (gleeson were tarmac/road building contractors of the time - and gleeson was in white letters across the plastic shoulder and back patch) and I used it last in the late 80’s working scrapping cars outside. Used to keep me dry for about 3-4 hours then became a leaden curtain of compact sodden fabric :)
Cheers Duma.
