49 next week.
-
Fuck, that is awesome!
-
From his twitter account
"Just climbed my 2nd 9a 25 years after my 1st. Rainshadow 4th ascent. Fxxxxxx psyched!!"
-
That is really inspiring.
-
Crikey! That's not bad!
-
Arguably his best achievement? 25 years after his first and after that 4 year lay off he had a few years ago, busier life etc... Just a total legend and complete and utter wad. So impressive.
-
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :great:
Moon is God.
Totally inspirational hero
-
Well he didn't time that very well. Had he done it a few months earlier it would have made a cracking end to his book.
Unbelievably awesome effort though. Northern Lights next? :strongbench:
-
What a total ledge. Incredible.
-
That's one of the coolest things ever! Made up for him.
-
That's all the too old/kids/work excuses out of the window.
How many Brits have done 9a now? Is it double figures yet.
-
Ledge!

Yeah deffo a better achievement, no question. Easily worth another 25yrs of dining out on this one.
-
Its in the 10-15 region depending on what grades you give things and who's a liar..
-
Well he didn't time that very well. Had he done it a few months earlier it would have made a cracking end to his book.
Needs an addendum/second edition.
That's brilliant
-
Fantastic, he's been training relentlessly since the school opened!
-
THIS IS AWESOME. fuck some skinny Czech lad climbing sharp choss in the states. Ben Moooooonnn!!!
-
'Hey Adam, why is there piss on your chips?'
-
Who cares? Didn't you see? Ben Moon just climbed rainshadow.
-
In Boreals and tights. It's 1990 again.
Can't think of a route ascent I've ever been more inspired by than this (McClure's onsight of Strawberries.. not really even close, Dyer on Megalopa, ditto).
-
Glad to hear a onsight of Strawberries doesn't come close :o Dave Evans has done Strawberries you know .
-
The best news in ages! I keep thinking its still the 90's!! :boxing: :punk: :beer2:
-
Glad to hear a onsight of Strawberries doesn't come close :o Dave Evans has done Strawberries you know .
Dave's a leg. As a well known scientist/climber was heard to remark: FPA of Strawberries (first punter ascent)
-
Holy fuck! That is amazing!

Strawberries - pah! He did the FMA of Lou Ferrino didn't he?
(First Mountaineers Ascent. Soz, off topic)
-
This is brilliant, who hasn't been waiting for this news to break? I'm fucking gob smacked, he climbed the hardest routes in the world nearly thirty years ago and now he's climbing three grades harder!
-
YES BEN! Such a hero!
-
Absolute legend :strongbench:
-
Superb effort B.Moon! My hat.
-
Best comeback ever. So great, well deserved.
-
Clearly it would be both unpatriotic and pedantic to mention it at this time of national rejoicing, but there have been some similar performances by euros ... for example, Manolo (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,25046.msg466285.html#msg466285).
True, and no lack of respect for Signor Zanolla, but he is a specialist in a very particular slightly off-piste style of climbing in relative backwaters. Whereas Ben's CV is one of the central threads of mainstream sport climbing history.

to say he walked up it would be an understatement , it was a very impressive performance from mr moon .
-
Ben Moon. Rainshadow. Champion.
Slacks, I would reply to you about the heal stuff but Ben Moon just happened and now nothing else is important.

Can't have been that infuriating then. ::)
-
Just when I thought I couldn't get any more psyched, inspiring stuff.

I'm just sitting here with a big idiot grin on my face. What Ben has done is so cool. PSYCHED!

Amazing news! :)

Nice one Ben.
Certainly a source of inspiration for the non-yoofs :)

Statement of Youth?

My guess is he's off to Kilnsey…

If Moony does Northern Lights I think I'll die.

Is it the 90's?!
So psyched for Moon! That's seriously inspired me more than anything else in ages!
-
If Moony does Northern Lights I think I'll die.
THIS.
-
I'm off to buy some leggings.
-
When Moony will do Northern Lights finally the climbing world will regain meaning for me.
-
He might as well repeat Violent New Breed while he's at it.
-
If he does NL he must bleach his hair.
-
In his own words (http://www.moonclimbing.com/blog/2015/06/rainshadow-4th-ascent/#sthash.vZroRCiB.uxfs&st_refDomain=t.co&st_refQuery=/oVzYIwo0P8)

Very Zen.
That's just awesome.
-
The most inspirational ascent of all time for me. Best of all, it's making me feel ok about taking 6 months off.
-
I'm no longer a child but my childhood hero is still crushing. Awesome.
-
Incredible. If you grew up with Ben and Jerry being the tops dogs this is like falling asleep at Glastonbury watching U2 and waking up at Woodstock with Hendrix on stage. And to think I was always told never to have heroes cos they'll always let you down. Not this time!
-
Great stuff, love his write-up about the send day, napping in the sun :strongbench:
-
Best climbing news I've heard in a very long time. Can't put in to words how much respect I have for his ascent. Remember bumping in to Ben at Malham when I was 16 or 17 and being in awe. Guess I still am.

Moonwad thread time?
yes, let's move this hagiography elsewhere
-
The thread will look a bit silly if we need to wait another quarter of a century for him to do something noteworthy again
:tumble:
-
Totally amazing news. Can't wait to see the film. I do hope Pritch has gone with Cat Stevens' Moon Shadow as the soundtrack.
-
Very inspiring stuff!
I'm still holding out for Jerry's big comeback though...
-
I'm still holding out for Jerry's big comeback though...
Does anyone know if he still climbs? Would be psyched if he did.

More chance of me getting up Rainshadow.

You may yet get your wish... from the interview that's just gone up on UKC:
What's next for you?
Northern Lights really, I really want to see if I can do Northern Lights - my old Kilnsey project - so I'd like to go and check out that, see how it feels and how it compares to Rainshadow.

I purchased a Moon hoody yesterday as way of paying homage.
Reckon he should do these tees with the 8 turned into a 9, would sell tons:

That hat really needs to be on someone with a huge ginger beard, no socks, sipping ironic craft beer from a jamjar.
-
What, Andy Nisbet?

I want to buy that man a pint! That's a beard that says I'm not here to fuck about
-
Legend. Didn't Stevie Haston tick 9a at 50 too?

Yep but the hat isn't in the same league (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QlSbrgzgnt0/TypZECm1nTI/AAAAAAAAAgU/3gPdXRIVNxo/s1600/DSC_0073.JPG)

Didn't he do a 9a+ at 52! :strongbench:

Along with the 'King of The Wave' T Shirts I suggested to him should be double whammy
-
PS Ben Moon is F**ing Hero
roll on Northern Lights
-
Another T shirt idea
9a isn't that hard anymore and 8a is approaching a rest
-
Super inspiring. Hopefully he doesn't stop at Northern Lights.... have to feel a bit sorry for Ondra though, that flash of Jade was the most awesome bit of climbing I've ever seen... until this!
-
It will be interesting to see if he tries with his original method for northern lights or adopts McClure line.

Don't think he'll want to make it any harder than it needs to be!

Fuck me he looks well scary. I can't be the only one that would be terrified bumping into him in a dark alley!

Quality. Makes me want to do a climb that feels so good it makes me shout 'come on motherfucka ' :2thumbsup:
-
Nice. Really looks like he walks it, no problem
-
Wonderful footage, great sparse editing, well done Ben (Pritch)
-
Fookin' ace that. Love the importance of the power-nap!
-
the power-nap!
An important part of life when you're approaching 50.
-
He made that look easy! Good psyche near the chains!
-
I love how, after total mastery of the bulk of the route, on the very last (easy?) moves you can see his legs shaking a little! Makes it look very real, as if you were witnessing ordinary crag business...except it is not!!!
-
Ledge.

yeah this really made it for me
-
Well. He fucking pissed his way up that didn't he?
-
Indeed. All credit due to the encouraging voice saying to just get on it...
-
So.... Mr Moon pisses his way up a 9a at age 48. Given that deterioration in performance is pretty general in sportsmen after around 30 y.o, presumably he was capable of climbing 9b in his 20s.... those must have been some damn heavy dreadlocks!
-
Wonderful footage, great sparse editing, well done Ben (Pritch)
Not to mention a significant name-check at 1:30 for some chap called Lee.
Was dense there?

Shuffling around on his tiny legs - trying to avoid his penis.

It just goes to show how much of sport is in the mind. Ben said himself that climbing a route (or a grade) that hasn't been done yet is so much harder than one that has.
He fucking walked it! :strongbench:
