Higgar Tor was mint. Nice breeze blowing onto it, zero midges. Able to hang the slopers on Piss with no problems, and the bonus of watching young Bradders crush The arete and Shit.

14.5 can be ideal for grit if its breezy. or shit for lime if its still. c'est la vie. temps is only part of the equation. I once saw a jackdaw with the head of a coot, and the body of a coot.
You really are a lost cause Rich. You are banned from my car from now on.
To be fair you aught to be able to crush Crack & Corner is most climatic conditions.
Hmmm.
Last weekend I saw a man with the head of a goose....or was it a goose with the head of a man?? I couldn't tell through the rhodedenrons.
This weekend I saw a crow perched on a sheep, and climbed on grit which is not grit.
What can it all mean??
managed to flash a fine E66b
Quarried grit's good for action even if it's bakin or freezin, I was at anglezarke last sunday and managed to flash a fine E66b and thats 5 years after I last did trad. What have I been missing!
King of Kings? :-\
Age of Reason? Does that still get E6?

cheedale one. I would guess t'other one is fucked too, but you might get lucky.
Jeez guys, you've got dedicated 'sticky' threads for this drivel.:'(
I reckon you miss out on the opportunity to do stuff on the colder, greener, shadier bits of grit if you wait too long to kick off the season.
Back on topic, it was great routing weather at Almscliff on Tuesday. Infact it was double-duvet cold whilst belaying. I reckon you miss out on the opportunity to do stuff on the colder, greener, shadier bits of grit if you wait too long to kick off the season.
can perform his Stanage party trick?
what are the 5 requirments as we all know that the birth of a crow with the head of a quail has nothing to do with grit bouldering season?

And JB, why were you at Remergence? The smart money was on Burbage West. Got there about 6.30, left about 8ish. Not a single midge, but some nice cool crisp conditions!

Virtually all of the people I climb with regularly have been back on the grit for the last month, and last night at Burbage West was the worst conditions I've had so far.
Monday is full moon i think, like the classic Duran Duran song.
Christ, even kilnsey's supposed to be still dry. No nasty grit just yet please. But the best grit is on the way to or home from Kilnsey, can't people enjoy both in a day? - I reckon we should call this a dual year, conditions are mint on both rock types at different times of the same day.
Christ, even kilnsey's supposed to be still dry.

I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky and one by one they disappear
Got called last week, if rather quietly... today is mint down here.About sodding time. Freezing fog and minus 2billion degrees up here this morning.
Too warm at the 'cliff according to GCW. Uncall that shit!

Not until this anticyclone moves and brings some colder air. I was tradding yesterday in blazing heat, tops off, sweating buckets. And I haven't seen a crow with the head of a quail either.
it makes Roaches lower tier look like Font
How can the Grit be called when there's still time for Lime routes to be crushed??? :-\
People seem to be confused here. You don't need the grit to be called to climb on it. But you may find you're swimming against the tide. Once the quail-headed crow has called, the tide will turn and its all downhill.
Its a late season, so far I'm waiting on 3 of the 5 conditions.
but it was still tops off this afternoon.
but it was still tops off this afternoon.
I then ate lunch with non climbing family whilst gazing up at Rocky Valley - more pain.
A frost is certainly one of the five. We're a step closer today, but it was still tops off this afternoon.
Earl was baltic until 12, then the huge number of boulderers spoiled it.When i arrived at 16.15 it was baltic again cause the boulderers must hav left and taken their heat with them...
Tales of woe...
This sort of day usually marks the start of the grit season.
no where near cold enough yetForget your two headed birds and clumsy squirrels Jim has hit the nail squarely on it's proverbial head. We don't need an early compensatory grit call after Dobs lime-call-ball-drop-actually-an-egg-trip-yolk-on-face farce earlier in the year (sorry to drag it up Dob).
first frost in the MCR this morning -0.5 degrees and the frost was pretty thick, took a while to scrape off the car
with temperatures forecast to be close to or slightly below average, we believe the most significant aspect of this winter will be the very much below average winter rainfall
Been on't grit for the last few weeks, had some good sessions with good temps.
I miss Dumby though :'(
Frost warning light came on in the car this morning, I knew this to be a sign.
Murmurs of warming weather approaching. Has JB come out of the box too early? ;)
He added: "There's a high probability that this winter will be followed by another sudden, weather-related phenomenon known as spring."

PS This thread makes me think wistfully of those lovely clear, cold days of yore.
geese don't mean much.
Do we actually need a calling this year?

I am rocking shorts vest beanie more and more these days.

30 degrees in Bali this morning, bit warm yet ;)
I hope the tortoise is sensible and stays in slumber a little while longer. Optimal conditions are still not yet here and we could yet see a warm spell.
You've got this arse about face. The tortoise will be awake now but will go to bed when the grit is called.
The gritstone tortoise won't. I saw a scouse girl wearing a sensible amount of clothes. This is a definite if unlikely harbinger of cooler temperatures.

the luck based scrittle community.
I sense panic in the luck based scrittle community.
Daaaad, can you call the grit?
Nah, it's too early
but it's freeezing
Maybe in the mornings, in the wind, in the shade.... Honestly it's not ready yet, just be patient.
But it's soooo cold right now
Well you can take your opportunities but overall it's not time
oooh but I Love the grit
I know, we all do but we just have to be patient
But I can't wait, I wanna go climbing
the lime's pretty good at the moment...
but I hate the lime, I reeeeally love the grit
why don't you do some training, then you'll be ready when the time comes
Oh, but I hate training, it's just so hard
Well if you don't practice you might not do very well when the time comes
it's so unfair, everybody's waiting, why don't you just call it?
Ok ok, go on, climb on it, but I'm telling you it's not ready. Don't come running to me when you grease off a sloper and break your leg.
….............
As has been illustrated if you're smart/lucky you can find decent nick on the grit here and there, it's just not on general release yet. But if you do want to climb on some rock in very good condition find your self some shady limestone of a morning. You might find all those memories you have about pulling on minging greasy holds in horrible warmth and humidity have passed, you'd be amazed at how much better the holds work when it's cooler, and you might even get fit* for grit season.

Well you're old and sound like a broken record as you only ever say the same things.
The grit will be called when waiting is filled.
Waiting is.
I do not yet grok the fullness of The Calling of The Grit.
I will wait.

I'm trying to think of a suitable lime equivalent to 'luck based scrittle community' but currently struggling to shoehorn painful, dogged repetition, eating disorders, squeaky voices, sunken eyes, and glued-up lineless chossy linkups into one snappy soundbite.
‘Let us consider then the question of the calling. What is the calling? We shall try to think about the calling. But this thinking about the calling does not presume to discover ideas about calling, let alone to give rules for calling. This venture in thought does not view calling as an art or technique; rather it traces calling back into that domain to which everything that is belongs. We ask:
1. What is it to call?
2. How does calling belong to being?
To call is to be, the calling is in the being, as the being is in the calling and the scrittle. The calling and being are made present together in the essential unfolding which is the fourfold of the fog, the frost, the sun, and the scrittle. And where can this being and calling be? Why only in the time, the time that is proper for the calling and the being. Earth is the serving bearer, blossoming and fruiting, spreading out in rock and water, rising up into plant and animal. Calling is really not calling. Calling is the manner in which mortals are on the earth ...
Bugger this, is the Pfalz dry yet?’
Where two principles really do meet which cannot be reconciled with one another, then each man declares the other a fool and a heretic”― Ludwig Wittgenstein, Peak Bouldering, 1st edition.
Gritstone has often been regarded as an art, as though it rested on a subjective talent and did not belong to the objectivity of the Friction.- GWF Hegel, The Science of Scrittle
currently struggling to shoehorn painful, dogged repetition, eating disorders, squeaky voices, sunken eyes, and glued-up lineless chossy linkups into one snappy soundbite.
If Grit is God's own rock, calling the Grit has much more to do with metaphysics than with rational?
So, with Kant, I say that metaphysic is not a science to investigate something, and can't discover anything. If we can't get to know God, how can get to know his own rock? If we can't know it, how can we call it?
Also, what is the noumenon behind the phenomenon known as Grit?
I can only say "you MUST grit".
"two things Fill me with wonder: the sticky grit in front of me and the moral law Within me".

I had to scrape frost off my car this morning. I haven't seen any midges in weeks.
Still midges out at the cliff and Caley this weekend, pretty mint yesterday evening, but it ain't time for picking sloes just yet...

Hark - what is that I hear?
If the lime call is deemed invalid then technically the grit is still called from last year.Exactly what Mr Disorderly said, hence the lime being wet this year.
Its coming but I'd say at least a month off having arrived.
After a couple of wasted trips, I made it down to Khute this morning and caught the big man. He wasn't for waiting. Felt a bit fitter this year so I reckon I'll go a few more years yet.
Enjoy folks!

do we need a calling of the Works
Pah.
A good month off yet.
I'm just waiting for the first frost of the year to kill the midges.
Got nibbled by a couple of them in the back garden last night.I bet that's itchy!
Brimham yesterday looked top notch from inside the car, but on stepping out it was clear that the call is a way off...way, way to claggy and humid, and what little wind there was was light and tepid.
I for one am hoping that the Caller has consulted a social media strategist after the lime call debacle...
Where was crisp on Saturday?
Got my copy of Summit through the letter box and it had a large picture stating the Grit had been called...
I have stopped wearing shorts outside
I just passed a grit wagon on the road, does this count?a SIGN.

people start packing their draws away and start dusting off their smearing boots!!!
Thank heavens for the tortoise, still safely in his box.
It was all dry, it was more it's orientation that let it down today. Perhaps a good winter venue.
and if you believe the independent the snow is apparently on its way :D

Its circumstantial- but a flock of Geese in Flying V formation just flew over MrsTT's house in South Manchester. Obviously getting too cold for a latte sat outside in Didsbury so they're off to even more exotic climes...

once the Pink-feet are on the move, and the dahlias are dead, its bouldering season.
Finally saw a Harrier in the Peak today - a ring-tail over Ringinglow bog, then a big skein of Pink-feet headed East at dusk. Magic.
UK Outlook for Monday 3 Nov 2014 to Wednesday 12 Nov 2014:
A cool and showery northerly airstream in the north of the UK will spread south to most districts on Monday. The showers will be most frequent in the northwest where they may fall as snow over Scottish mountains, and it will be windy. Temperatures generally a little below average but feeling cold in comparison to the recent very mild weather. Showers may ease somewhat from around midweek with more in the way of brighter weather, with perhaps rural frosts overnight. Thereafter, a return to more unsettled and windy weather from the southwest looks the most likely scenario with spells of rain and milder conditions pushing northeastwards across the country interspersed by brighter, showery and colder days. The best of the drier and brighter weather in the southeast.
UK Outlook for Thursday 13 Nov 2014 to Thursday 27 Nov 2014:
During this period, the generally west or southwesterly flow is likely to bring spells of wet and windy weather, mostly affecting northern and western areas. However, southern and eastern areas will probably see some drier and settled conditions increasing the likelihood of some sunshine, but also the risk of frost, mist and fog overnight, the latter of which could be slow to clear. After this probably turning more unsettled across the south and east, whilst remaining unsettled across northern parts. Daytime temperatures by then may well be near or a little above normal, although feeling colder during any wet and windy spells.

No where near, went to Almscliff this morning expecting good temps, as soon as the sun was out I was greasing off everything. Went to Caley instead for some shade...

With the lime caller climbing E7 on grit before the call and total confusion amongst the scrittle populous I'd say this is worse than Dobbin's Facebook lime call egg drop.
The grit was called yesterday morning, after consuming an heroic dose of Amanita I was able to commune with him with the cocked leg and we ran through khute til it was done. Unfortunately due to the almighty hangover, the queue wanting to drink my piss and the vagaries of French mobile data that I was unable to post til now. Enjoy.
Ps anyone who mentions either sport climbing or cheats on this thread will have their permits revoked. That is all.
Flipping mint in Nidderdale in this evening.

You're not likely to get the call this week, as the caller has deserted his station and is living it up in Font at our expense.

4th time this month. Dobbin has dropped the ball. And then tripped over it. Turns out the ball was an egg, and now its all over his face.
This is a zero sum game
I recently climbed at both Rowtor and Blackwell Dale on the same day, having success at both. Where does that put your binary theory now eh?
Means half the time you were at the wrong crag.
Ah, but empirically I was not, as I had equal success at both, and enjoyed climbing at both!
Yeah, you're quite right, the limestone was filthy and disgusting
I have an important question about grit/lime calling.
Can both be 'in'/allowed/called at the same time - or is this an either-or situation?

4 degrees and dry predicted for the weekend...
Good connies at Curbar today...
As much as I approve of BB's admonishments, I do think it is a particularly difficult call this year. Partly due to the weather being particularly shittingly bollox.

If the calling was easy we wouldn't need this whole rigmarole. I feel the show pony is distracted, he needs to have a long think about where his priorities lie. All I heard off him today was 35 degree this, 45 degree that, discussions on bolt on hold suppliers and how he found climbing in horizontal roofs easy. Definitely more the talk of the Lime caller.
I ran a simple least squares regression on the data in Matlab, and the results suggest that the trend is not significant. The R^2 value is pretty low and the p value is higher than 0.05, which is usually the cut off for statistically significant results, although this is obviously based on limited data.
I am concerned that andy_e's optimism will skew JamieG's analysis
if Dense says something to balance it, I'll be less concerned

What was the estimated coefficient and its standard error?
The R2 isn't that bad really (in my opinion, I often see adjusted R2 <= 0.2).
The call this year is fickle indeed. As one must in this situation, I have sacrificed my flesh to the gods to allow safe passage of the gritstone winds, the sub zero temps and the flash attempts.
We just have to wait for Johnny to read what the entrails say. May this offering bring you all a prosperous winter crushing on the rock of the gods.

It's not been an easy few weeks. I thought I caught a glimpse of him a month back, but if it was I couldn't catch him. I went out tonight on the off chance, and there he was horns and all. Should all be downhill from here, enjoy folks!

I don't think it's time for the call yet (if you believe in that sort of thing).

Personally, the definition of the grit season is that period when the vegetation at Caley is low enough that you can navigate to the boulders, but it hasn't yet got too green and wet and cold to climb them. Last year, it lasted around 3 days. Not ready yet: last Sunday, getting my mats from the car to the Blockbuster area resembled a mash-up of Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre Wrath of God. I ended up having to decamp to the more open environs of Scary Canary because the jungle vibe was bringing on too many 'Nam flashbacks.

Eh, have you just popped JB's resignation letter through his door?

Doh. Getting mixed up with the lime farces.
FFS I think your board building has gone to your head. Warm and wet in Hathersage. There was a brief spell when the grit could have been called yesterday but the horned one came out, caught a glimpse of you screwing plywood panels to a 30 degree board and has fucked off in disgust.
As a fully paid up member of the Grit party I have lost all faith in your ability as leader, looking over your and Masons respective vimeo accounts I can see that the campusing skinny one has done over 167% more esoteric gritstone mantles than you this year. DM for the new caller.
The table below shows monthly the Central England Temperatures (CET) anomalies up to September 23rd. The important thing to note is that only April was colder than average and only by -0.4C. March was close to average with an anomaly of 0.1C but the other months have mostly been just over 1C warmer than average and currently September is a whopping 2.7C than the average.
I can't believe this talk of a coup, brought about by Sharkskyist entrists to this great thread. JB is entirely suited for the job and anyone who says otherwise is a brown Crimp Budgie.
I stand with JB!
What a mess. Last season was the worst for a while, September temps are well above average and I still have a project in Cheedale so I'm officially deferring to the Limestone. And Limestone means Limestone
Had to shut my bedroom window last night because it was pretty nippy.Am considering closing mine (London) soon. They've been open since May...
"connies are coming, connies are coming, connies are coming, it's finally getting colder."
Had this song in my head all week.
I won't tell you which infamous seasonal marketing campaign the tune is taken from.
Another sure sign of the conditions edging closer is the appearance of sensationalist weather forecast articles of snow-based doom and gloom...
Haven't seen a Swift/Swallow/Martin for nearly a week!!There still the one day Tour of Lombardy (http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/tag/tour-of-lombardy) where you might catch Swifty (http://www.teamsky.com/teamsky/riders/rider/4326#LMOAJdYgTVDbTLWW.97)or Tony (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_(cyclist)) in action before the end of the season. Oops, wrong thread. :-[
Yeah, back around. 23 degrees registered by the car on the way back from brimham just now.
the whole fun of this advent time of year is the countdown. .....The glorious crescendo.
Of course we're a good way out yet, but the whole fun of this advent time of year is the countdown. The anticipation. The second guessing. The glorious crescendo.

It was dead good earlier (11-2)...
I can confirm that a calling was found yesterday - Friday evening at the Plantation. Lovely conditions late on. :2thumbsup:
2 degrees when I got out of the car at rubicon this morning. Beautiful morning but felt distinctly like I should have been somewhere else, climbing a different rock type.....
Yaar, but is it proper grit, Englisher?
Missing a 'not' for him to be correct!Yaar, but is it proper grit, Englisher?
It claims to be grit. And certainly has some grit like qualities. Anyway, Tx2 tells me that "grit" is a meaningful term in a geological sense.

Calm down folks - it's now November which means it'll now rain most of the time, especially weekends, until Christmas. See you in 2017.

The geese flying overhead just heralds the beginning of the slide to scrittle season.
geese don't mean much.
Hmm, depends what geese they are, and where you are. Down here, once the Pink-feet are on the move, and the dahlias are dead, its bouldering season.
I heard there is no such thing as optimal temperatures at Malham, it just flip flops from greenhouse to can't feel your extremities/gordale is frozen. Awaiting publication of nature paper on that front though.
I did consider writing something up about this - but couldn’t find the right (low) mix of impact factor and vaguely reputable journal (that would also be a soft touch...) :)
- yes, I've had the heating on.
Hey old people. The kids don't give a shit about all this calling the grit bollocks. Its all in all the time.

Based on one top rope go about 8 years ago, id guestimate somewhere in the 6C to 7A range.

(I topped it no-handed with one slip immediately after soloing it in crap misty conditions.
it's just very high up to be trusting to pure padding wth no handholds.
Been to Baslow and Gardoms loads over this month. Always felt utter velcro and not a single soul was seen at either crag, although Full Power was sporting some grim tick marks today from some ghostly boulderer.
Does anyone climb outside any more? :-\
Two ascents of Voyager already this season and it's not even been called! Who's in charge around here?!
was excellent conditions at stanage on sunday. Popular was crawling. Can't be long now!

Opportunistic grit is still possible but a mass calling seems early just now.
If Stanage Popular is busy then it definitely ain't grit season...

My point isn't that the call should be made. Rather that the call itself is meaningless; the conditions are out there and have been for a while, one must simply seek and grasp the opportunities when they arrive.

Do they not teach this in school anymore???
Just because someone managed to find half decent connies by doing a lie down start in the shadows and having a mate waft the air hopefully to generate a breeze means nothing. The call doesn't mean that the odd bit of good connies have arrived. It means that your hand freezes to your nose when you try to wipe away the snot dribbling out, and your spotters pray for you to top out so they can finally fucking leave and get somewhere warm. Do they not teach this in school anymore???
😃 what else is there to talk about!!Indeed! Still, for those of us who aren't operating in the 8's, it feels pleasant enough!
One of my favourite guidebook photos and captions is the one of Gus on Force Nine, with everybody except Gus, even the dogs, visibly in pain from the cold and wanting to go home.
A wad point for the person to scan/photograph it and embed it in this thread.

It's a controversial call, to be sure. The tortoise needs to keep his acolytes guessing, I suppose. 15 degrees this weekend!
I didn’t read JBs message as a calling. Connies good first thing and last but not during the day?
If the tortoise is abroad then surely it’s not called??
Answers on a postcard...

I didn't know the albotross got up it! Nice one Will! :weakbench:
Yep, there was definitely frost in Burley last week. Rather nippy!
Warming up for the weekend... might be a quick turnaround for the turtle.
Not had a hard frost? I've twice scraped thick ice off the car windows this week and that's down in the balmy south that's known as Northampton.
You must get up at midday Will.
Not that the Calling Of The Grit is going to do anyone in Northampton any favours...
"three hours - no - TWO hours - no - AN HOUR AND A HALF / THREE QUARTERS from my house to Stanage!!!"
Well this is a weird one. I've had four out of five for a while now but can't finish the job due to the incessant fucking rain.
Bits of Caley were dry. Brimham was soaked. Ended up doing eliminates at Almscliff until it rained.
Boss up at simons seat. Broke ice in my wellies on the walk in. Stanage is always a poor choice at weekends.
:bounce:
Vote of no confidence for this year's grit caller?
Vote of no confidence for this year's grit caller?
It's taking the twatting piss.
One of Peak Lime's premier re-equippers and developers out of Chee Dale and at Stanage today. Some excuse about scrambling and childcare, but if that's not a sign of an imminent calling I don't know what is....
It's been a strange one. Dodging the Peak Park Rangers aside, I had four of the five three weeks back and was anticipating an early call. But the final one proved elusive, until dawn this morning. I think Red Roddy has been shielding tbh, he's getting on.
Some fairly basic analysis - but still interesting - showing a reduction in frosty nights in November over the last 60 years (esp since 1990)
https://twitter.com/markpmcc/status/1331908814984065026?s=21
A frost is one of the signs. It used to be the easiest, now it's often the hardest.
I got a tick winter climbing on the Ben in March, so frosts seem not to affect them much. Deer numbers are the main factor afaik.
We're trying it now - and its hard!
Have I missed something!? Is it available? If you mean the crosswords, did you miss them a year ago
Cheers Highrepute...
Thought I'd sum the seasons - its not a great trend... close to horizontal trend lines tend to mean f*ck all... Doubt its significant, but there is a trend. Moving average (chart below) is maybe better...

2010 looks to have been the best grit season ever, followed closely by the worst in 2014.
There's a lot of yearly variation too. 2010 looks to have been the best grit season ever, followed closely by the worst in 2014.

Wasn’t 2010 the first big snowballing year? Was before I started keeping training diaries so can’t check.
Edit: Nai confirms that I think. How good was that year in actuality? Assume there was a lot of dripping, boulders in snowdrifts and inaccessible crags! (I was in London)

I was wondering how much people managed to get out during the beasts from the east in winter of 2017/18? Seems like it would have been prime snowballing conditions if you were able to get anywhere (though lows of -13 might have been a bit too extreme)

worth a mention (not seen it brought up yet) that average warmer air in winter = >humidity potential and a nighttime 0˚c min with a daytime max of 8 or 10˚c leads to the condensation nightmare that is much of dec-feb season in recent years as the warm moist air from the day dumps it on the rock overnight and doesn't take much of it back the following day.
You may have notice the lack of lime being called. This is definitely not due to laziness. The Connies on the grit are absolutely bon! Soon though.....
I did peapod yesterday...Surely that's it :o

Grit calling is highly correlated with the calling of the central heating (to be turned on) by the less hardy members of the family down here. Not a squeak from them yet.Well according to that rule it’s been grit season since the end of September in our house.

It's got to be today. I got frozen off Asylum Sika, whilst wearing 4 layers... the time is now.... crunchy leaves and everything. Miracle is I'd booked this day off 10 weeks ago.. and, BOOM!

I would like to propose you stop talking nonsense, but just like a 1 month premature grit call, i doubt it's going to happen ::)
Someone getting psyched and suggesting grit should be called on the first pleasantly cool day of the year is as much of a tradition as the call itself though isn’t it?
It’s the point between now and the call (traditionally marked by bickering on this thread- the first “what are you on about, I just climbed a hard limestone route” post is surely only seconds away) that’s the best bit of the year in my opinion, decent conditions for pretty much any type of rock climbing and still a reasonable amount of daylight. :2thumbsup:
In the morning yesterday connies were good but in the day it's too hot. It's not great season yet! October I reckon
I would like to propose the grit being called. A wonderfully cold, golden evening, midgeless and the bracken has almost fully died off near the edges.
The slopers felt crisp, jug like even. Heel hooks aplenty, compression everywhere in sight. It was beautiful, just beautiful.

You clearly weren't anywhere near Caley, I didn't even bother getting my climbing shoes out yesterday.

As has been said many times before, one cool morning/evening does not maketh a grit season.
I find humidity is quite a personal thing. I have relatively dry skin, so actually really struggle if humidity is <60% or so. In fact I stopped trying Bens Sit on such days as I knew it wouldn't be favourable, and the day I did it it was certainly >70%.
I also have very fond memories of a session at Caley a few years ago; it was -4 and very still, with a thick blanket of fog so very high humidity. I could do no wrong.
@DingDong I think that puntering of Fiend comment is uncalled for and you should apologise
I find humidity is quite a personal thing.
Also such a highly localised thing that it sometimes feels a forecast is almost meaningless.

Tough one this year, four of the five came early, but the last required a plashing chase. He seems more elusive year on year; shrouded by mists, strangely opaque. Is it my eyesight fading, or the changing congregation?
