Title: Baggy Point and the Culm guide
Post by: boxmonkey on June 28, 2020, 08:35:41 am

I noticed on the CC site that there’s a new planned guidebook for Baggy Point and the Culm Coast. “Available in 2020”. Anyone know if this guidebook is imminent?

https://www.climbers-club.co.uk/baggy-and-the-culm/

Also - it mentions plenty of bouldering to be included. Anyone know what the coverage will be like? I’ve been using PDF topos of Hartland Quay and Godrevy. Wondering if this guide will cover a lot more of what’s on offer.

I don’t know when it’s out but I thought a little way off yet in that I got the impression from a thread on the CC Facebook page that proof reading was yet to go. But I don’t know, I’m extrapolating.....

It says “the best” boulder problems so would assume less comprehensive rather than more, but again I’m guessing.

Isn’t godevry out of the area though? (That’s the one near St Just right? This only covers to Bude-ish, the Atlantic Coast is a separate volume.....)

Ok thanks.

There’s a note in CC news in November 2018 saying it’s “nearing completion” so fingers crossed. Expect recent events may have disrupted somewhat.

Actually, Godrevy would be miles out of the area.

Answered my own question. Got this from UKC forum “  We are now page setting and hoping to have it in the shops for early autumn.”

Granticus might b able to tell you what bouldering is included, the stuff he's done around Lynmouth looks excellent

I went to hartland quay the other day, it looked really good and I'd done a couple of warm ups in the trench, when a mini avalanche offloaded from the cliff . Sketched us out and we bailed.

Hi Chris  I heard my name mentioned.... Lynmouth is not in the Culm and thus not in the Culm guide...  It will be in a forthcoming Devon select guide though... In the meantime exmoorbouldering.com  (http://exmoorbouldering.com)is the place to go for the most upto date info on Exmoor Coast bouldering.

. Hi Paul... I Witnessed similar bouldering in the trench recently, there was a fairly hefty rockfall on the quay beach... very scary!..  The coastline down here is constantly on the move and ever changing.   Avoid walking directly under the loose cliffs, in places where there’s obviously been previous falls... walk quickly!
The CC Culm guide is getting closer to completion, there was a photo shoot of bouldering at Northcott a few weekends ago...  Hartland, Duckpool/ Sandymouth and Northcott, definitely in for bouldering, not sure on lesser known venues such as Lower Brakespeare(aka Big Brother), Milook, Upton, Hartland Point etc... Godrevy is miles away from the Culm, so not in...

Avoid walking directly under the loose cliffs ...

... take a rope and get yourself on the routes up them instead.  Much more fun. 😉

 See my previous comment on walking quickly, if you decided to climb up them cliffs learn to swim quickly but gently in an upwards direction.

Pleased to hear Big Bro and Milook are in Macca!
