Title: Who makes quality children's sleeping bags?
Post by: T_B on June 18, 2018, 01:53:43 pm
Does anyone know a brand that makes 'proper' sleeping bags for sub 5 footers?

I'm actually surprised that Rab, ME don't seem to. Given some of the people who buy their gear and associate the brands with quality sleeping bags.. have children. Or Alpkit, who are quite innovative.

Something rated to around zero degrees celcius.

Ta.

Decathlon do decent kids sleeping bags. We have bought this one https://www.decathlon.co.uk/forclaz-0-5-ultralight-child-id_8383006.html, for our 3 year old (it is designed for those up to 1.4m height so currently a bit big!) when we go car camping. If anything I would say it is a bit warm for most summer UK nights. It might not be good enough for your uses and isn't a premium brand however I can't fault it and it feels a decent quality product especially for 30 notes.

Thanks, that looks ideal. I'm a big Decathlon fan (bought one of their black out blow up tents last summer, which is brilliant).

Got the green one of that page for the kids, surprisingly good quality.

Only thing I would say is keep them for camping in use only, as i think the liner would probably not stand up to it being used around the house much. Especially if your kids like climbing inside them and getting dragged around by each other in it.....

Isn't the whole point of a sleeping bag for a child to get in it head first and to fight your sibling? Or sit in it and toboggan down the stairs?

We got these via a recommendation from Jez at Outside.

https://www.deutergb.co.uk/products/sleeping-bags/little-star-exp/

The bottom bit zips away when they're small, so they dont get lost down the bottom and tangled up in the middle of the night, but as they grow, you can unzip it and give them a bit of room.

They've had stacks of use over coming up to 10 years and are still in perfect nick i.e. zips all still functioning well etc.

Highly recommended.

Or as they are green, pretend to be caterpillars. Obviously.

Obviously these are the ones I was going to suggest. The bottom of the bag tucks inside to shorten it hence the two different lengths quoted. Makes them more efficient for the smaller ones, but adds growing room. There's then a size up (there's actually two) which fits a kid who grows out of the smaller one. Great if your kids have a few years gap between then. Not as good if you've got twins.

On the bigger sizes, there's a standard thickness version, and a super thick version incase you're planning on using them in colder conditions. Obviously there's no temperature rating, as the mannequin used for testing bags doesn't fit inside!
