Title: Jah rastafari
Post by: chris20 on July 05, 2011, 11:17:12 am
Given that there is a thread for dnb, funky fresh beats, techno and hip hop I thought it was about time there was one for some decent music  :P

So I'll start off with a pod cast series by the great Mikey Dread http://insomniaradio.net/2010/10/17/ir-dread-at-the-controls-6-singers/ (http://insomniaradio.net/2010/10/17/ir-dread-at-the-controls-6-singers/) you can download the whole 6 episodes from there, also they suggest that the last episode was probably the last thing he produced before he died.

And my favourite track from the great man

Mikey Dread - Roots and Culture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u9g9XjjYJ0#)

I wasn't aware of Austria's thriving reggae scene  :-\

Slightly mainstream reggae but I love the whole of the A side of Max Romeo war ina babylon especially one step forward

Max Romeo & The Upsetters - One step forward (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgKvhgkQk6Y#)

and the more predictable.......

Max Romeo - Chase The Devil ( Original ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uijFctBM47M#)

Nice!

Germany's got an absolutely massive scene... So I suppose Austria's just next door.

Here's Italy's favourite ex-pat... Massive tune!

I take it you all have the limited edition Sharma Rasta Rope (http://www.climbers-shop.com/9870801/products/sterling_velocity_9_8mm_sharma_rasta_special_60m.aspx) to accompany your tunes?

For those of a more dubstep persuasion this remix of Mr Perry's track is very good.

Nice one Chris - I love yard style music but I don't know much other than what I happen to hear from recommendation, so I'll be keeping tabs on this thread!

The BBC had a Reggae season on recently and the highlight for me was the Story of Rocksteady (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ym9n4), and on there was a sublime bit of footage (among a few actually) of Derrick Morgan performing 'Tougher than Tough', which really touched me:

Have a bit of North West London's finest..... Gappy Ranks!

Saw this guy with David Rodigan (http://www.rodigan.com/ (http://www.rodigan.com/)) in Sheff recently and he was superb, this is my favourite studio track as everything else is slathered in Autotune... Shame really as he don't need it.

Gappy Ranks - Longtime (Official video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6Vie8H-htQ#ws)

Also I recomend checking Rodigan's show on Kiss Sunday's from 11pm - Man's a legend.. You can get repeats here http://kube.totalkiss.com/ (http://kube.totalkiss.com/)

:2thumbsup: some great tracks, especially the Derrick Morgan shizzle.  I've been reading a good book called the dead yard which is about modern day Jamaica but with a real strong emphasis on music.

I'll start off my contribution today with a female vibe

One of my all time favourite tracks, it's the most i've paid for a 7"

DHAIMA - INA JAH CHILDREN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_hsJTgHbW0#)

Another classic from Joe Gibbs, I'll have to have a whole day of posting Joe Gibbs productions one day

Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMrNDnU6PPk&feature=fvwrel#)

Love this track t, but I think it's Lee Scratch Perrys influence that makes it so good, and having it in stereo is great

Susan Cadogan - Hurt So Good - Reggae 45rpm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYmLYoICVcg&feature=fvst#)

Nice selections a gwaan, I'm saving these up for a late night sesh at the weekend.

I was a: too young and b: as far removed, socially and by family attitudes, from the UK sound system scene back in the 80's, but have had a minor education courtesy of a friend who was part of 'Wadada' sound (not the european one that's around nowadays) from up Huddersfield way and who warmed up and clashed with the likes of Saxon and Coxsone, Jah Shaka etc, and he introduced me to the utter delight of watching Rodigan dominating a soundclash  ;D

I love the whole sound system thing, live DJs and MCs taking control using what was by modern standards, totally basic, improvised electrics......

Just some stuff I've watched before on youtube after my man told tales of sounds and blues happening way before my time....

Sir Coxsone Sound crew in 1981 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoD_uBOIfEM&feature=related#)

SAXON SOUND SYSTEM 1980s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rENTw5AnAkE&feature=related#)

JAH SHAKA - IN THE DANCE 70s RUFF! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3jb3IYZ6H4&feature=related#)

I have always loved Rockers since I first saw it, after owning the soundtrack CD since I was old enough to buy random bargains in HMV - classic 70s film starring a number of the Jamaican stars of the time, some great dialogue and music, and a downright good film

ROCKERS JAMAICA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvLuuHhWDWc#ws)

Babylon (1980) trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0nhcK_bylU&feature=related#)

Yes! Only seen it the once but was very impressed. Karl Howman seems to have had a high point here before playing Jacko in Brush Strokes and those awful Flash adverts.

I also liked Countryman, especially the bit when the Ital Rasta feeds the couple a load of foraged food preparing it with a giant machete

I have to agree, I picked up a Third World LP at a car-boot sale and it's definitely aged badly, in a way that a lot of 60s/ early 70s stuff hasn't. Luckily only cost a coupla quid.

Finest French dub around - their first album Diversité is pretty much all killer no filler, though borderline samey in places. Very tight live too.
