Post by: Huffy on February 18, 2004, 10:40:50 am
Not strictly bouldering but definately of interest...

The premiere of 'Consumed' - a video by some climbers, will be held in the Sheffield University Auditorium on the 23rd of feb (this Mon) at 7.30. it'll be £2 on the door which is pretty good value for over 60 E6's and above

Word.

Very entertaining. Has reinforced belief that routes are indeed wrong, Mike Weeks' big lob at the end gave me the willies and not in a good way

Nice soundtrack, with exception to the backing tune to that thing of Miles' in BBg quarry, static death noise.

it was fucking the bomb. not many climbing films have you wincing (numerous falls) and then pissing yourself (as the grange hill music comes over ross) in a matter of seconds. I'm watching the audio commentary right now.

shame they didn't play the mike weeks/art nouveu footage at the end (Art nouveau look flava by the way).

I was flicking through the extras on Friday at my girlfriends house whilst I was waiting for her to get ready   , and as her dad walked in wondering what I was watching I got that bizarre pr0n clip!

Really good film though, very inspiring.  Mike Weeks on Harder Faster is scary as fuck.

Post by: Bubba on March 10, 2004, 10:01:33 am
Yeah, that clip is bizarre - sort of like a fisting, but more of a "heading" or something  :D

I've yet to find the "top ten" bit, must try harder.

After watching it through, Dan's fear, then psyche up and subsequent fall from the top of Gaia is one of the scariest bits of climbing film I've seen - awesome stuff....

Got a copy a few days ago and have watched most of it a couple of times. Congratulations to Dan and all involved, it's great.

Okay, trainspotter time… Can anyone identify a couple of the routes in the intro for me?

The first is a steep, curving, quarried arete that's sandwiched between clips of The Mint 400? I'm pretty sure it's the right arete of the big slab underneath Froggatt with Third Burglar on it but I've no idea what the route is or how hard. Anyone?

Second is the quarried wall between clips of (I think) Slab and Crack) and Clippety Clop. Crossed-up jump for a jug. Looks great but I've no idea what it is.

Damn, I think this is going to inspire me to get my rope out again.

Just checked and the first route I mentioned isn't named. The climber is identified as Iain Farrar, so I'm guessing the route is Dogs Die In Hot Cars. Can anyone confirm? Looks great.

I think (although I'm not sure as I don't have the DVD in front of me) that the 'route' in question is not Dogs Die (which is actually just left of the arete, or just right of turd burglar). It is actually a boulder problem (albeit highball and with a shocker landing) of Ians. I dunno what he called it (if anything at all) but I think he said the grade was font 7c. Although that might be wrong also. Shit I'm useless, but I am trying...

I got one through from Huffy earlier in the week but he did say last week there were one a couple left.

If the worst comes to the worst and you can't source one through Huffy or Chris. We've got a DVD burner at work, so I could probably fire off a copy. Drop me a PM if you are struggling.

Iain never actually completed this project and so a project it remains. I have been sworn to secrecy about it for about four years now. However i guess the cat's out the bag now. Iain hasn't been on it for yonks so i reckon it's about time someone went and bagged what will be a total classic (sorry y'Iain). I've been on it and i think its more E7 than 7c, unless you bring about twenty pads and fill the trench in under the landing. Steadyish moves up the arete lead to a hard traverse section and a tricky pull-over. It seems a very conditions dependant thing and due to location rarely gets in good nick, which is part of the reason Iain hasn't bagged it. Go to it.

I shouldn't worry Nick, he's off enjoying himself in Castle hill at the mo so you won't be getting a brick thru the window for at least a month
It's about time this cracking line got some attention anyway, at the very least it might get Iain out of semi-retirement to have another go.

Anyone know what the route is that Tom solo's in the hidden extra's? Looks like Yorkshire...

The commentary adds a whole new dimension to the dvd.

Any chance the first video could be put onto dvd too?

I'm pretty sure that's from the first video - I may be wrong here but I think it's an old Mark Leach route at Millstone, "The Bold and the Beautiful"?

The Weather Report footage with the hideous fall is also from the first video, though the footage of the rescue is new.

I lent it to a friend and it wouldn't work at all in his normal DVD nor PC DVD players...  :x

And he took it to some computer wizzkids of his, they got some of it to work, but said that it was deteriorating and there was nothing that can be done about it .

Damn, that's a bit shit after only 4 plays - some of the copies were anti-copy protected, some weren't.

I don't agree with copying low-volume labours of love such as this for all and sundry, but if your copy is getting trashed then it's fair enough in book.

Try DVD Decryptor and see if it can rip a copy to your hard drive, then you can either watch it from there or burn a fresh copy.

It was deliberate that some wouldn't play on PCs - luckily I got a PC compatible one.

Like I say, DVD Decryptor will probably read them all, or you'll certainly find some sort of utility that can. You should be able to make backups of stuff you've bought legit imho.

Although dvdXcopy has been forced to shut down by the muthafucka MPAA, etc, you'll still find plenty of copies flying about p2p. That's a very easy to use utility for doing backups.

was there any point to the dvd being done like this? i don't understand :?
Title: 'Consumed' - some climbers
Post by: Fiend on August 25, 2004, 11:27:41 am
Well...

Firstly Huffy said that the copy I bought wasn't a computer-compatible copy, BUT it worked perfectly on my PC. Maybe though that's why it's deteriorated.

Secondly in a moment of panic I did just copy the files from the DVD straight over to my PC, but that's quite limited i.e. couldn't get the menu nor the full shizznaz with the music soundtrack, only the commentary version in 3 parts. And since then for some reason I deleted all those files.

Thirdly, the gist I got from my friend was that his whizzkids thought the DVD had deteriorated enough that they couldn't actually burn a copy of it (that was the plan, to get a deeper-burnt copy).

I have another friend with an original so perhaps could borrow that and try to copy it but I'm wary of fucking his copy up. I think I will PM Dan and Huffy though...

CDs or DVDs should only get fucked up through either scratches on either face, or if the disc itself is faulty, not sealed properly or something - this can happen. i bought a box of 20 verbatim writable CDs last year and none of them would even read as blank let alone write on any computer i tried them with. i kept the receipt though.

Another good one which I use a lot is DvdFab (http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-fab.htm). It'll copy any DVD retaining all the menus / soundtracks / etc and will split it over two discs if it's a dual layer original.

ahh, ok. i was reading it like, some you could play only on dvd n some you could play only on pc. ie i thought whats the point of buying a dvd that won't play on your dvd. all's a bit clearer now. as is the fact that i'm a tool :D

sorry about all the problems, it all origionates from the poor authouring software i used and the fact i didnt know what i was doing when encoding the files, i think i would have been better on a mac with final cut but i went with pc's instead, although now i think i have cracked alot of the problems, but i am still not happy with adobe encore. maybe also the dvds are degrading, i read an article in computer video sometime ago about dvd lifespan, i will send you another dvd fiend, ( i only have a few left and i only planned to make 70 , so wiped my hard drive )

The Bad and the Beautiful.

The Bad and the Beautiful is THE best route ive ever done. Check it out its ace!
