Anyone entered? I entered with some friends from Exeter and am now feeling somewhat intimidated with there being isolation and now seemingly loads of 'pro' teams (though they don't compete with the riff raff on Saturday and automatically go through to the semis on Sunday).
7 metre wall, overhanging 40 degrees so not expecting it to be a pump-fest. 3 routes, 3 mins for an attempt and 3 mins in-between attempts. So, if you fall in on the first route, you need to be getting out of the drink sharpish.

I'm going but part of the scarpa team so only climb the second day I think. Bit worried about the fact that it'll basically be a long boulder prob if its a 7m wall! Need to convince them to set an 80 move circuit..

I'm assuming they've tested the water to check that it's reasonably clean and free from shopping trolleys :'(
I reckon 7 metres should be good fun as presumably it will be approx 10 - 14 moves, so not down to fitness, nor hopefully one's ability to compress volumes. And probably a bit more exciting to watch than watching someone on an 80-move circuit ;)

Good point this. Recently went on a canal boat trip ( :punk:) and folk were saying the canals are a well known for the shitting out your innards scenes.

The canal at Exeter is pretty clean by canal standards. It's only a couple of K long (basically just a series of locks to by-pass the weirs put in to keep a higher water level at the old docks on the river), not one one of your great Northern industrial arteries.
That part of the river was still tidal until the weirs.
The site of the comp is where the river enters the canal and is flowing constantly, it's been "gentrified" for decades. Full of Uni students racing and training for their Coxed fours etc, canoeists, Sea Cadets etc etc etc...
Swimming in the canal is common. Used to spend hours shooting the sluices on the weirs as a boy.
Probably more danger of a Swan attack than Weils...
Decidedly more Oxbridge, than Tyne on the Exe, Old Chap!

Sorry if it upsets you, but there are five full time members of staff at the Bunker, we have to slim it to four. Mark will be a great loss to us, in life sometimes you have to do hard things.

Silicone swim hat, it was likely me that posted. Although, as Gus said, they don't work as well as a chalk bag and I quickly reverted back to just that (and being too scared to fall off anyway).

I've got a couple of chalkbags made by malhambra I think. They're made of lightweight, quick drying material and they're absolutely perfect for DWS. Rinse em out, put them in the sun, and they're good to go before I am.
Shame the company doesn't seem to be around anymore. Alpkit do something similar but I've no idea how good they are...

Back on track.
I think the problem with canal water is that it often has very low flow, and so sits there and stagnates, gets low in dissolved oxygen etc. If this one takes flow from the river then it could well be decent.

That's actually edited footage, as Ryan climbed up to the hard and high last move once already, but the heckling was a bit too strong so he bottled and down climbed back to the jug. When he went back up there was a bit more encouragement and less savage heckling!

It really is a big dick though Dense, granted the bastard part is not wholly justified. Insert emoticon here 😜 to show that this is said in jest and not as a personal attack.
What I should have said, last night, is that the "entire staff booking into comp" situation was, I thought, amusing and the " moan like buggery" was an exaggeration for comic effect. At the time (three months back?) we had no knowledge of the events that would follow.
So, apologies for appearing so heartless, I assure you I'm not, as for the other accusation, berate? Again, I guess I'm going to need to remember Emoticons to prevent certain people from taking things so seriously.
Still, my main point, the only relevant thing I would like people to take away from my posts here is, I think the DWS comp is a great idea and I can't imagine the canal being too dirty.
I understood the height of the wall is determined by the depth of water under it?
I would guess there is a safe maximum too, regardless of water depth?

I haven't tried, but spent a few bored moments in a supermarket looking at those Clothes peg bags. They are essentially unlined Chalk bags and ought to dry out quite quickly?
In that vein, the Dog treat bags from the likes of Pets at Home, are similar if a little smaller. Those even have a crab attached.

Here's a shot of a mate coming off a awesome project nearby. About 10m up and his left hand blew off the crimp. I was just out of frame and nearly dived in after him fully expecting him not to surface... but no, he came up laughing. Bruised ribs for the following week though!

Only one top of problem 3 (right hand side) so far for the male Qual's.
Our boys Mark and Rory did well. Especially Rory who got most of 3. Jenna did well in the ladies, just a slip on 3.

Water was murky but warm. Pretty big crowd. Liam Halsey and Michaela won. Fun comp but pity the wall wasn't higher

10th was pretty good Alex and there was some excellent climbing. From a spectators viewpoint it was brilliant. The problems were nails. One gripe, most of the climbers in the semi's failed at pretty much the same place on problem 2 and only one top on problem 3 (or was it two, kept having to take kids to the toilet).
There was a great atmosphere on the Quay and a huge number of non-climbers who wandered past and stayed (including one family, who stumbled on the qualifiers and enjoyed it so much they came back and spent the day watching the semi's and finals).
There must have been well over 500 people watching the finals...

The "oooohs" and "Aaahhs" as the climbers moved showed how interested the crowd was and even my old man, a diehard, anti comp, old school, trad climber (who still moans about chalk); was clapping and cheering.
My daughters were in awe of the Female finalists and I was surprised (yes, I know, books and covers etc) at how well Sierra actually climbed.

As a format, it's great to watch and for the competitors, the three problems of the quals and semi's made for a tough game. A slip on problem 1, meant a dunking that would make problem 2 so much harder.
The single problem final, basically a sudden death final, made for a great spectacle and must have ramped up the pressure on the barge...

I felt like screwed up (especially p2), but I think the nature of comp problems is that they make you screw up, so you'll always feel like that. For the best anyway - went and did Rainbow Bridge instead of finals which was well fun!

I told them that the 'how long can you shake out on a campus rung for with your feet on a couple of screw-ons' format would be a crowd pleaser, but for some reason they didn't believe me...
Most of the competitors seemed to favour a slightly bigger wall, don't know what the crowd thought? It sounds like there's not the potential to go much higher without moving the venue though - apparently Gav pencil jumped off the top whilst setting and went ankles deep in the mud!

As I understand, the cost of dredging would have been prohibitive on such an unknown quantity as a DWS comp in Britain, so wall height had to be tailored suit.
The comp was a big success enjoyment wise, whether or not it was a financial hit or miss, only time will tell.
Problem 2, like all of them, was set to give maximum spin and fall drama at the slightest inattention to torque. As I said before almost everyone made similar mistakes and failed in the same place and a couple of those that are it, made almost impossible recoveries and no-one looked very graceful or controlled!

The organisers deserve a large pat on the back. They made the right decision to not bother with isolation for the qualifiers as it meant no hanging around and being able to watch your mates. It was extremely well organised (maybe too well organised - everything timed to the last second!). The location is brilliant in terms of seating and being right next to the climbing wall. The water was even pretty warm - I got a lung full and am still alive so far. The routes in the qualifiers were well set and made the most of the size of the wall. There was a great atmosphere. The only issue is how to make the wall higher! The attraction to me of DWS is being able to climb well and positively when you get to that height where the fear starts to kick in. (apart from for the juniors maybe) there was no fear factor with this comp due to the wall height. I don't know how they'd be able to make it higher without doing some major dredging of the canal (I came up with weeds round my feet having fallen from 2/3rds, so I can't have been that far off the bottom).

We canoe there a lot, as do hundreds of others.
Never had a problem.
The guys from AS water sports are in there daily (the rescue boat crews at the comp).
I've been swimming in that river and the canal since I was a kid.

All this fallout will add so much to the legend of the comp. This event will be the Woodstock of British climbing - who was there? Who went down? Who didn't? The illness these people are suffering will in years to come be boasting points. My advice to them, from a publicity point of view, is make it sound bad. It's a PR masterpiece.
Is there any truth in the rumour the water was deliberately spiked?

Did it rain in the run up to the event? I'd be interested to know what the local water company has in the area (did anyone speak to them in the run up?) or whether it's just stagnant water or similar.
