Title: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: Fiend on November 29, 2010, 06:30:54 pm
For bouldering obviously ;)

Particularly Carrock Fell and Gouther.

Ta!

Gouther's bit of a walk Fiend, and not the most friendly landings etc.  A bit of it takes seepage, although J Mascis etc shoulder be fine.

Carrock is quick drying so will be snow dependant.

Couple of inches of fresh snow in Hesket today so take a shovel and a yard brush if you go to Carrock. You might have a few problems with the road through Mungrisedale but it should still be passable if you take it easy. The weather is beautiful.

A conditions report would be useful, Tanners, I may be able to head out tomorrow.  Have fun!

I suspect any snow on Shelterstone will be melting over the problems.

So do I, but if it melts off today it may just dry out l in the next day or two.   Just be helpful to know if a trip would be worthwhile.

All faces are dry and Shelterstone, though snow on top. I cleaned top of Vitruvian for you though. Get to it!

Any updates on carrock fell (all areas including the mosedale boulders, fancy trying that new line) or the bowderstone (mainly, if all the ladder face holds are free of ice and if theres much seepage)?

Heading to keswick for a week on wednesday night.

Cheers, Ben

Bowderstone is dry, no rime ice/frost or anything anywhere on the ladder face right up until the top lip. Crack was frosty and there were some 3inch icicles on the far left of the ladder face. Didn't think to have a proper look at the other side but it looked pretty good. Tip top conditions, great friction.

Unfortunately I'd come up with the wrong shoes

Little update.

Conditions were brill at the end of last week but just got worse and worse. On my way back today i firstly checked the bowderstone and i dont think there was a single dry hold on it which is a bit rare. Next went over to carrock fell mainly just for punks life because its great and a bit sheltered but that too was soaked. I think both areas will take quite a while to dry out.

Is St. Bees likely to be ok this weekend?

(Assuming I've not got hold of the wrong end of the stick with the bird ban, looks to me like there's plenty of unbanned rock to go at)

thanks

It has been consistently dry over here in West Cumbria, so it should be fine. Just remember the recent landslip and go cautiously

A report from various Scouse lids said the Bowderstone was wet and everything else was wet everywhere else. Don't know if that's of any use.

Two conflicting reports! The forecast is good. Will see how it goes and can always retreat County-wards. Will look out for you on The Keswickian ;)

I'm currently just outside Keswick, its not raining now, but it has been very wet.

Estimate for Carrock on Wed, given this forecast: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/nw/keswick_forecast_weather.html (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/nw/keswick_forecast_weather.html) ??

Fucking amazing. -1'c and sunny at midday. Light breeze easing off towards evening. Amount of usage indicates it should often come into nick I think.

Went to little font today and it was surprisingly bone dry, both the rock and underfoot, given all the rain we have had.
Good breeze to keep away any midges too.

Hello,
I'm up to the South Lakes (Windemere...) for a romantic weekend break with MrsTT sneaky bouldering opportunity Fri > Sunday and the forecast doesnt look too bad so far... \o/

I'll hazard a guess that most stuff is as wet as the rest of the UK has been recently.. but any thoughts on how the spots local(ish) to there will be (e.g. Kentmere, Langdale..)? I'd quite like to get up to Carrock again, but I think its probably too far away.. any other spots likely to be dryish (or fast drying) within striking distance of Windemere?

Cheers,
TT
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: Mike Tyson on January 02, 2013, 12:07:44 pm
I can confirm the weather is not good at the moment (I'm up in Keswick) but Kentmere could stay dryish, Little Font area etc. If all is sodden Kendal Wall will have to do! :-) If you do decide to head towards Carrock then let me know on here and I'll come visit if you like.
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: GCW on January 02, 2013, 12:09:26 pm
Just be aware that bits of Little Font can be sodden underfoot after rain.  Badger Rock may be an option.
Title: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: tomtom on January 02, 2013, 02:21:19 pm
Cheers Gents.. Badgers an option.. Though ticked most of it now.. Hopefully there won't be a bull in the field this time :) I'll dm you if I head up to Carrock, but its probably too far north.. Best see how amenable mrsTT is :)

Cheers for asking Golt, got to 1/2 wet Langdale on Friday.. Had a good session though pocket frustrated! (And hurt left forearm!) managed after good battle the slopey v4 arête around the corner over style...

Walked and explored on sat, but wall to wall drizzle and clag on Sunday..

Such is life!

Hey all.

Have potential lift to the lakes this weekend, though I just realised that I'd have no way of getting about whilst there...

What's the chances of Bowderstone being dry? The forecast running up to the weekend looks good and I'm guessing a tourist spot like Bowderstone is accessible by public transport?

Cheers!
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: Mike Tyson on January 08, 2013, 10:21:17 pm
Hello. The weather has been dump for the last few days. Not been up to the cobble lately but everywhere else has been pretty bad. You can grab the bus to the Bowderstone car park from outside Booths super market or try hitching a lift although its very quiet this time of year so bus would be preferable!

Again, any info on the stone would be good. Looking more and more likely that I'll come up for the weekend if the weather stays good and the problems are dry. Never been there before but I like the look of Picnic Sarcastic SDS and others in that grade range.

Cheers!

Anyone been to the sourmilk boulders recently? With the recent fog I was wondering if it is pretty minging there at the mo?
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: Mike Tyson on January 10, 2013, 08:08:55 pm
Currently very foggy with a hint of moisture in the air and its certainly dropped a fair few degrees. Should be primo conditions if the fog clears. I didn't get chance to actually make it to the Styan itself though, apologies. I'm working tomorrow but may get chance to sneak out Sunday so hopefully see some of you out and about.

Nice one on stone conditions Dan. The grit season doesn't exist on my 2013 calendar so will be making most trips to the cave or the lakes this year :)

P.s. is Ben's or Dave's beta the best for sidekick? Looks a bit techy... Quite fancy trying special cases first I think as it looks more thuggy!
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: turnipturned on January 10, 2013, 10:21:17 pm
Jordon- From what I gather from dan I think the majority of earthworm Jim is permo-dry! Tau zero drys super quick.

Hess dog- I think you will find the technical genius that i am actually worked out the beta Ben used :) haha! Nah Dave's beta kinda sucks unless you eat v14's for breakfast. You shouldnt struggle for height on the first big move! It's a fucking ace problem, get it done!

Carrock was pretty damp! Did some problems on damp grips with scary wet top outs and lots of scrambling about on sketchy wet rock. Hoping it picks up tomorrow for a stone visit!

The stone was largely dry apart from a few finishing holds on the operas and picnic direct yesterday. Felt a bit greasy/damp on the lip on special cases but it was more likely my butter hands. Hopefully it stays dry for a while yet!

Was at the Stone Sat/Sun. Ladder side stuff was dry apart from the high holds Richie mentioned. In General Kesick was damp today with light snow turning to rain.

Back in Gloucestershire now though so will be of no further help unfortunately!

Dragging this up from the depths (is there a more popular lakes based thread/site for this kind of thing)

Whats in nick up the lakes (chuffing wise).  Pavey Ark? Esk? Dow?   Every time I've been to Pavey.. its be sopping.  Is it all dry at the moment (not withstanding possible rain on Friday?)

Got a rare 4 day pass out for a tradding trip  :bounce: and it seems like the Lakes is going to get the best of any weather over the weekend.

Cheers in advance.

I was at Gimmer last weekend (really) and it was bone dry.
Walked up to the top of the crag/mountain afterwards which is on the way to Pavey and all the paths were dry so I would guess that would be good too.
Title: Re: T'Lakes conditions??
Post by: georgenorth on June 25, 2014, 11:47:21 pm
Just got back from Gimmer now. It's been a bit drizzly and damp in the Lakes for the last couple of days, but generally dry recently so there's not much seepage or run-off at the moment. All of the crags you mentioned should be fine at the weekend as long as it's not raining at the time.

Scafell was very dry at the weekend, even the 'usually damp bits' were just 'a bit greasy' according to a local. I don't know how a bit of rain tomorrow will affect things though

It rained today pretty much constantly until about half 4, just as I finished work  :wall:

Other than today, it's been scorching up here so I'd imagine it will be ok pretty quickly. Blue sky out in full force as I type. If I'm not working Friday I'll call in for a morning session.
