Title: Trowbarrow Conditions.
Post by: mini on May 19, 2009, 07:54:24 pm
I'm heading upto Lancashire for the weekend so thinking of zipping up the M6 and having an exploratory look at Trowbarrow Quarry.

What are the conditions typically going to be like considering the heavy showers we've had over this last week? Does Red Wall and or the Shelter Stone suffer from seepage?

Cheers in advance.

It's pissed it down all week, mate.
Once wet, Shelterstone and Red Wall both suffer from seepage and I wouldn't be too hopeful.
However, I have NOT been so I may be being overly pessimistic.

Shelterstone will be seeping, no doubt. Slight chance Red Wall will be ok. I would think the classic, Shallow Grave will be wet though for sure.

Cheers guys. Just out of interest which are the quicker of the South Lakes venues? It is only an hour up from the folks in Chorley so might have a recky of a few venes I haven't visited yet.

Warton dries quickly, Farleton even more so.
After that, I guess the Shelterstone, parts of Fairy Steps (Aeon etc).
Hyning, Woodwell, Red Wall take a while to get rid of seepage.

If you get a good breezy (dry) day, Warton would be worth a look- a few things for you in the 7b-c ballpark.
Being near Chorley I'd offer to give you a tour, but busy this weekend and still not climbing.

Have fun!

I don't know for sure, but I'd expect the Shelterstone to be seeping.  red Wall may be better, but it may not.
I may head there on Friday so I can hopefully give you an update.

Well, I was wrong!!

Pretty good today considering recent weather.

The Shelterstone is pretty much all dry, if a little glassy.

Red Wall has the usual streaks (Yin Yang, left of Grimlock's, right of 6 Foot Sicks etc) but was otherwise OK- certianly plenty to go at.

Having said that, it has started snowing again this afternoon so things may change.

Incidentally Greg has got a LakesBloc blog (http://lakesbloc.blogspot.com/) going, where there will be conditions etc posted.  Good idea.

Was good today. Most of Red Wall dry apart from left of Shallow Grave (no surprise there).

Funk Phenomena was climbable with a trickt topout due to encroaching snow.

Pit Problem was fine as was the rest of that face (you could top out Vitruivan and sketch off left down the slab avoiding all snow).

The back of the boulder atrocity exhibition, texas..etc had no topouts due to snow (some was starting to melt down on to the slopey ledge of Texas).

Nice conditions today when the sun was out although it made it a bit greasy on the Iron/vitruvian pinch! :o T shirt weather briefly.

Just wondering if anyone headed down today? What has the weather been up to? Is there melt run-off or has it stayed frozen

When were you thinking of going?
Generally it's been a shitty sleety day here and a lot of stuff has been melting.

Was thinking tomorrow for the shelterstone but the cave might be a safer option!

I'd say Cave, mate.

I may bumble up there as I'm sick of being couped up inside, so I'll let you know how things look if I do.
I assume you know about the LakesBloc Blog (http://lakesbloc.blogspot.com/)?

Shelter stone dry (slight seepage below Vitruvian). Extremely high gravity prevalent here as well.
Red wall has some big patches of seepage. Starting hole of shallow grave wet.

I had a look last thursday after checking out woodwell.  Didn't spot a single dry hold at either venue - wetter than an otter's pocket enveloped by a wizards sleeve or whatever.  The rain in that part of the world second half of last week was biblical.  Might have improved this week? someone local/better informed might know more.

Don't suppose anyone has been down today? Was thinking of going on thursday, for the shelterstone. Is it usually OK if there's been no rain and a breeze being a lone boulder and all...?

Lots of dampness, mostly run-off from snow melt rather than seepage.

Bone dry today on South face of shelterstone. Too hot in sun at mid-day. Back side a tad damp.

I can report the shelterstone and red wall are all bone dry today, had a light sprinkling of rain today but it did nothing.

Anyone been down recently? Just wondered what the midge levels were like. Also has anyone has been to Woodwell recently?

Cheers

Popped by this evening for a look. Red Wall was completely soaked from condensation and also seeping in quite a few places. The Shelterstone was also seeping a fair bit but was very soapy. Woodwell will be rubbish apart from maybe the bit around Not Bad Dave. In a word, merde. I went for a nice walk along the coast at Silverdale instead.

Bowderstone is also in a similar condition! Unfortunately I didn't go for a nice coastal walk instead drove 2hrs home! The joys of climbing in the north of England!!!

Shelterstone was dry enough for the pit problem and vitruvian tonight, surprisingly not midgy at all.

Been today and everything is dry, little greasy though as it was mega warm. No midges either! Even the low crimps of Iron Man are dry as well; getting into Virtruvian Man now from the start, progress has been made!  ;D

Was there yesterday and all ptoblems dry prior to rain coming on at about 1830. Had got to the car and drove off so no idea as to what will remain in good nick but it was a sharp shower.

All dry at Woodwell too, even aosd start holds. Only kaizen holds seepy but dryable

The shelter stone was dry today, red wall mainly dry with one or two streaks of wetness. Surprised to see "holds" on Il Pirata!

Does anyone know how fast the shelter stone is likely to dry on the front face after today's rain? It looks fairly good on the overnight and daytime forecast for tomorrow. Hoping to sneak in a session between 11 and 3.

not sure, its rained tonnes today and over the weekend. Red wall will almost certainly wet, reckon some lines will be dry though on the stone. I'm heading to thorn crag as that will be dry :)

I've not been but it has been really wet so I suspect seepage may be an issues here and at Woodwell.  May be worth a look if you aren't travelling too far though.

Hi Luke - I recon parts of the the red wall will be wet (it was pretty streaky over Xmas when it had been drier..)

If you're heading up that way I recon it would be a mint day to go to Thorn... (I would be considering it seriously, but I'm off to watch Hull Cheslki)

Woodwell will be soaked, Trowbarrow will be wet in a lot of places and Thorn will be great, if a little warm and sunny for absolutely A1 primo conditions.

Jesus christ trowbarrow is dry!! Shelterstone all dry bar the starting hand holds of Iron Man and Jazz Phenomenon as a whole. Red wall is dry bar a few streaks but Shallow Grave is dry. Also popped into Hyning Wood which was also dry too!

Anyone know if iron man etc is dry? Also, what's it like for condensation? Slightly worried by temp rise on Sat..
Title: Re: Trowbarrow Conditions.
Post by: tomtom on March 05, 2015, 09:53:20 pm
The Shelterstone has nothing draining above it so it dries super fast and doesn't seep much.. Condensations a different game - depends probably on the wind..

Was mint yesterday (in a moderately polished limestone way..)...

I would suspect that all of the S.Lakes/Silverdale lime spots are in a similarly good state today...

Title: Re: Trowbarrow Conditions.

Where does it count?
Up with walking with the kids today so didn't pull on anything, but pit problem side all seemed dry, damp at the back.
Red wall patchy, shallow grave looked dry enough, other dry problems, with folk trying them. Traverse wouldn't have been much fun avoiding wet footholds though.

Was up here last night and woodwell on the 30th, shelterstone and red wall all dry. Tom's buttress dry, not bad dave area dry, and most lines at o'ert road dry, even the traverse beneath the buttress. Back Hand Roof is nearly dry too. Fairy steps also dry when I visited at the weekend.
