Title: Anyone read any good comics recently?
Post by: Dr T on March 25, 2008, 10:38:55 pm
was talking about 30 days of night on the film thread (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,6004.0.html) and thought this might be a goer

lets kick it off with some of what the Mrs and I have on order at the moment

Fell, Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith (surreal crime - best long runner I've read in years)

Docktor Sleepless. Warren Ellis and Ivan Rodriguez (interesting future shock - not quite sure where it's going though)

Simon Dark, Steve Niles and Scott Hampton (New protector of Gotham - Frankenstein esk - dark)

30 Days of night - Red snow, Ben Templesmith (excellent WW2 extension of the franchise)

Batman Confidential, Green, Cowan and Floyd (good new addition to the Batman franchise)

Lobster Johnson, Mike Mignola and Jason Armstrong (Pre Hellboy and BPRD, nice and weird)

Umbrella Academy, Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba (Surreal superpower weirdness from the imagination of the leader of MCR - just finished, look out for the TPB)

Lucha Libre, Bill Tanquerella, Fabian Gobi and Jerry Frissen (amusing weirdness with mexican masked wrestling "super" heros)

yes I'm a geek and I don't care  ;D

I recently reread The New Bondage Fairies on-line somewhere, but appart from that I haven't read any comics or graphic stuff for ages. I did have a dream that someone had made an excellent film version of Durham Red though.

I've not bought any for ages either (Last one was Tank Girl II, in about 1991) but used to love them.

Aberdeen Library has a surprisingly large selection.

I know it's an oldie, but I re-read Watchmen the other week, quality. You just know the film will be gash.

Watchmen is amazing - I'm embarrased to say it took me until last year to discover it  :-[

As with all these things I'm sure you're right about the film, but I hold out a faint hope...

Recently I've read:
Sandman, A Game of You and Fables and Reflections (Very slowly working my way through the series - so good)
Death's Head Volume I - Even funnier now I realise he talks in the same way as Gordon Ramsey, yes?
Planet Hulk - Amazing if you ar einto the big green guy
Alan Moores Complete WildC.A.T.S - slightly different take on superheroes to any Marvel offerings
Marvel Civil War - Great idea, well carried out
Marvel Zombies - zombies + superheroes - amazing!

Ah I read that as a lad. So good. I didn't realise they were making a film of it but yeah I can't see how they'll do it justice. Seems the writers were of the same opinion.......

From wikipedia

Quote
Moore and Gibbons' response

 Previous developments
In an interview with Variety's Danny Graydon during Warner Bros.'s first possession of feature film rights for Watchmen, the graphic novel's writer Alan Moore adamantly opposed a film adaptation of his comic book, arguing, "You get people saying, 'Oh, yes, Watchmen is very cinematic,' when actually it's not. It's almost the exact opposite of cinematic." Moore said that Terry Gilliam, preparing to direct Watchmen for Warner Bros. at the time, had asked Moore how the writer would film it. Moore told Graydon about his response, "I had to tell him that, frankly, I didn't think it was filmable. I didn't design it to show off the similarities between cinema and comics, which are there, but in my opinion are fairly unremarkable. It was designed to show off the things that comics could do that cinema and literature couldn't."

Moore also told Entertainment Weekly in December 2001, "With a comic, you can take as much time as you want in absorbing that background detail, noticing little things that we might have planted there. You can also flip back a few pages relatively easily to see where a certain image connects with a line of dialogue from a few pages ago. But in a film, by the nature of the medium, you're being dragged through it at 24 frames per second." Moore had opposed the adaptation of Watchmen from the beginning, intending to give any resulting film royalties to Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons. According to Moore, David Hayter's script "was as close as [he] could imagine anyone getting to Watchmen." However, Moore added, "I shan't be going to see it. My book is a comic book. Not a movie, not a novel. A comic book. It's been made in a certain way, and designed to be read a certain way: in an armchair, nice and cozy next to a fire, with a steaming cup of coffee."

In an early interview with Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker, Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons said that he thought the time had passed to make a Watchmen movie. At the time, Darren Aronofsky was expressing interest in directing the film under Paramount Pictures. Nevertheless, Gibbons said, "It was most likely to happen when Batman was a big success, but then that window was lost." Gibbons also told Neon, "In a way, I'm glad because it wouldn't have been up to the book."

100 Bullets (http://www.100bullets.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/features/intro.htm) is always a firm recommendation - really dark and with amazing artwork that holds far more than you think it does at times. Well worth checking out.

Stubbs - make sure you read the two Death spin off books after you finish the Sandman series.

Some of the names going round for it were staggering, Keanu Reeves! as Dr Manhattan, and Jude Law as Ozymandias for fucks sake. 2 heavy weight thespians eh? The Sandman books are great, I'm jealous if you reading them thro from start to finish. The Death books are good, but also check out The Books of Magic, The self-titled? John Constantine comics and the Lucifer series, all v.good.

Has anyone read the follow-up to Dark Knight Returns?

I attempted to start from the start after buying Endless Nights on a whim, but I've struggled to track down the first couple.  Got both of the Death books which are awesome.  Always think it's funny how much Dream looks like Gaiman, he seems to fancy himself quite a bit!

It shouldn't be too hard to tarck down the first couple, they've been reissued as part of the Absolute series. You get the first 3 volumes with extra artwork and other schizzle, in a hardback form. Pricey but worth it.

For pure art value I recommend all of Ashley Woods work on Popbot. It is written by Sam Keith I think, who writes very stream of conscious/psychedelic.
Mike Mignolas Hellboy might be a bit obvious but they are bloody good little stories.

Nice one Bluebrad - last time I checked they said they could get the first two 'within 28 days' or whatever, but they just kept bumoing my order till the next month - looks like they've got some second hand now.

Anyone read Gaiman's Marvel 1602? I thought it was amazing.

Now those are interesting covers - Freaks of the Heartland looks especially good.

Must say that it's nice to see a comics thread that recommends stuff other than the usual old numbers - might have to recommend some Bisley era Slaine to get it back on track...  :o

Good find Dr, whats with this $1.99 an issue, is that the only way they can make money with the printed word market being on it's arse? Are comics going as bad as newspapers and magazine's? His Global Frequency series looks pretty good.

His Global Frequency series looks pretty good.

it is very good - and available as a TBP which makes life cheaper

they did make a TV pilot but it never went further....

Ellis' Transmetropolitan  (http://www.transmetropolitan.com/) is also most excellent and available in TPB - think boarders stock it!!!

again free issue one is online here (http://dccomics.com/media/excerpts/1719_1.pdf)

TBP - Trade Paper Back - (can't type very well)

collection of single issues in one book (usually a multiple of 4 - 4,8 or 16 issues) - difference from a graphic novel is that a graphic novel was never split up into individual issues...

of interest perhaps the first 8 issues of fell are available as trade paper back (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fell-Feral-City-v/dp/1582406936)

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

For Valentine's Day Mrs Starfish bought me 5 weeks worth of 2000ad comics - the five weeks leading up to 14th Feb - how special am I?

VERY FUCKING SPECIAL.

My big treat was sitting in the Sheaf drinking beer and reading all 5 comics at once. Ace!

Anyway, this prompted me to treat myself to the first of the Books Of Invasion, "Moloch". I love reading Slaine stories. Anyone not familiar with Slaine needs to sort their life out.

I know that the Slaine novels are available as torrents, but even I appreciate the paper versions. I've been taking Moloch in to team meetings and searching for relevant quotes to amuse my work colleagues. Admitedly I am the only one who is amused by all this, but it's worth it.
I have now taken to making up pseudo-Slaine quotes as a way of making writing up my client notes more interesting.  "Mr xyxyxy has been drinking heavily for the last 20 years. Recently he has been trying to cut down. Yesterday he only drank 4 litres of strong cider (7.5%) between 8am and 10pm. He did not consider it too many."

Mrs Starfish should be applauded - I lapsed from reading 2000AD about 2 1/2 years ago after about 14-15 years of continuous reading!

However your reading should take in a lot of the earlier Slaine - "The Books of Invasion" is a bit rubbish IMO - it steadily got more flabby and less cohesive as it got older IMO and the BOI was just another step down the slippery slope that it was taking. The best stuff to look for would be the early stuff in monochrome (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Slaine-Warriors-Dawn-Pat-Mills/dp/1905437617/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236369089&sr=8-5) where he has proper full on warp spasms and work from there (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Slaine/lm/R185PMD29W62GG/ref=cm_lmt_srch_f_2_rsrsrs1).

The Horned God series is well worth looking at for the immense scale that the whole artwork takes in with everything (especially the battle scenes if my jaded old memory is anything to go by) and also for historical purposes just because it with the Horned God artwork that Simon Bisley changed the way that comics characters were drawn for the next decade (not necessarily for the better I hasten to add).

Also check out Nemesis the Warlock Pt. 1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Nemesis-Warlock-Bk-1/dp/1905437110/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236369309&sr=8-1), Pt. 2 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Nemesis-Warlock-Two-2/dp/1905437366/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236370120&sr=1-3) and Pt. 3 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Nemesis-Warlock-Bk-3/dp/190543748X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236370120&sr=1-2) (are you already aware of this already as I seem to remember you having a Torquemada sig ages ago??) which is truly great and will also provide a whole slew of quotable things no doubt.

Lastly I can not recommend highly enough from the 2000AD stable America (http://www.amazon.co.uk/JUDGE-DREDD-AMERICA-John-Wagner/dp/1905437587/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236369430&sr=8-38) which is up there with some of the best Dredd ever written (even though he plays a very minor part in the story arc and also early ABC Warriors which interlinks with Nemesis (in a way I can't seem to figure out at the minute but it seems to start about here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ABC-Warriors-Meknificent-Seven-2000/dp/1906735085/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236370316&sr=1-11)) .

There is also some later stuff that I thought was truly great though recalling the name is beyond me as me and a half bottle of wine have been taking a trip down memory lane here...

Never really got DR and Quinch - suspect that it would have been better had I read it at the time rather than 10-15 years later.

I nearly put a caveat re: Strontium Dog on my last post but didn't bother - I will willingly admit to be in a vast majority here but I have to say that SD was unadulterated bollocks and was a waste of news print!

just caught onto The Boys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_(comics)) by Garth Ennis (preacher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preacher_(comic))) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmetropolitan))

utterly awesome - satirical, political and down right crude
in fact a pure mix of preacher and transmet, which are, of course, both utterly awesome too

This is a bit different (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/8221128.stm). Will admit that I will probably never buy it but it is one of the things that I like about the comics medium is that it can be used to portray difficult situations such as this.

Latest acquisitions are Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service which is OK - published in the Japanese Mange style it seems very odd reading as it reads "backwards". Like the concept and will certainly get hold of the second part to see if it gets better.

The other one is M.P.D Psycho which I have yet to read - it is apparently very full on so I am waiting to find the right time to read it. Will let you know how it goes.

Must also find a copy of Transmetropolitan.

Got this one for Christmas - BATMAN: CACOPHONY (http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/graphic_novels/?gn=12098)
good writing from Kevin Smith (especially the Joker's dialogue) and excellent art work, just a shame it didn't have a follow up

Currently reading the TPB of

which are great and well recommended...

but my favourite of the year by a country mile has been The Goon TPBs, so good I had to buy them all...

Here's the poster from the forthcoming David Fincher produced film...

Bit of an update on what I have been reading lately:

After re-reading Neil Gaiman's Sandman yet again I have finally caught on to Lucifer. Probably by far the best spin off character in the series.

(http://fwd4.me/Xdu) (http://fwd4.me/Xdv)

Picked this up on the off chance after reading some good reviews - looks good so far.

(http://fwd4.me/Xe3) (http://fwd4.me/Xe1)

Next, as recommended by Dr T.

(http://fwd4.me/XeC) (http://fwd4.me/XeB)

Got to admit that I have always been a tad sceptical about Ennis after reading Preacher a long time ago and not really getting on with it. I might have to go back and look at Preacher again now as this is the dogs danglies - of the three recommended so far this is probably the best of them.

Lastly a bit of Japanese horror:

(http://fwd4.me/XeF) (http://fwd4.me/XeE)

Only half way through the first part so far but it is suitably f***ed up in that unique Japanese style.

Still got to read the first part of M.P.D Psycho though so no baseline to judge it against for sheer head f***edness but I will get round to it soon and will comment then.

(http://fwd4.me/XeJ) (http://fwd4.me/XeI)

One thing I do know is that it is going to be an expensive few months while I catch up on all the above and I still haven't got round to buying Transmetropolitan yet...  :'(

Just finished reading this:

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JUza6SiOL._SL500_AA300_.jpg) (http://tinyurl.com/2v45hvf)

Really thought-provoking storyline and the art is really something special IMO - different to anything else I have seen for a long time with very simple, stark line work being the most obvious aspect but once you study it further more different styles of artwork are revealed.

Some of you will know Rich Jordan (richdraws on here) who designed the ukb t-shirt logo. Well, he's been locked in a dark room away from boulders, and daylight it appears, for months drawing a comic. It's called "No Place Like Home" and the first issue was released today . I picked one up from Forbidden Planet in Middlesbrough, so I assume it is easily found in decent comic shops.

I hardly read any comics so can't comment on it's quality per say, but it looks brilliant to my untrained eye and filled my little heart with manlove and pride.  I know it's a bit "check out my mate's band", but just thought it was worth mentioning on here as some of you may be interested.

Well done that man. Thought he had been a bit quiet.

Next step is getting a film made of it, and then creating a "comic" band in collaboaration with a slightly wayward musician.

This time next year Rodney we'll be millionaires.

I've never found a Zombie story of any interest

have you seen Braindead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103873/)? not a comic, but it should be

what about Zombo in 2000AD - I got quite into the story where they introduced Obmoz (anti-zombo)

admittedly, these are interesting by virtue of the ridiculous/amusing  quotes that occur with reasonable frequency, but they do involve zombies

as does the film Zombie Strippers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0960890/) - has this been done as a graphic novel? if not, why not

2000AD! Now there's a blast from the past...
And didn't the year 2000 seem so far away?

Must have stopped reading it before then, though, with hind sight "Strontium Dog" was almost a Zombie story line.

My wife gets me an ongoing subscription to 2000AD  :2thumbsup:

I haven't opened one since I bust my ankle (28th January). I have learned that it is a waste of good art to read them when I'm not feeling good.

I'm close to planning some good personal comic time to catch up with Tharg's offerings. Question is - how many per session? I know that when re-reading them, 8 or more is fine; but for new material I'm not sure that more than 3 at a sitting is thrill-efficient.

Having rediscovered the Graphic novel...

I seem to be indulging in a mild obsessive spell.

A total different style, closer to "Steamer" Sci-fi, good humour.

Possibly too light hearted for some (I like a little relief, occasionally).

Started in '02, I've made it to end '07 so far, still running today...

Slow start, gets better quickly.

slightly off topic in that I haven't actually read them yet....

As I mentioned before, I haven't opened any of my new 2000ADs since I bust my ankle in January - I don't like to waste Thrill Power on a sub-optimal mind state

I felt ready enough to get them out and look at them today

tomorrow, when the kids are in bed,  I intend to read 3 or 4 of the last doses I consumed (including the bumper xmas/newyear mag) just to make sure I'm in the zone and up to date

then I've got these...

Ed Brubakers "Criminal" series. Only read the first and have got the second one to read once I am finished with the Dawes biography but seems like a fine bit of noir writing so far.

I got a copy of Dance of the Gull Catchers, the epilogue to 'From Hell'. It caps off the book nicely with a pictorial essay on Alan Moore's research and his own personal perspective on the Whitechapel murders (he doesn't buy the William Gull/Sickert theory but used it as the basis for the book) and an essay by the artist (I'm at work so can't remember his name) on the cartoons and press coverage from the period.  There's also a massive'y detailed set of footnotes for the main novel itself.

Last night I read kick ass 2 brilliant. Well written follows on from the first comic ignoring all the details the movie changed (as you would expect). Pretty messed up story with some brutal art work.
If you like the first book and or film definately give it a go. Also Kick ass 3 is about to start as a comic (may 2013) to complete the series

After slackers linked the android app. I have been reading Injustice: Gods Amoung us interesting premise. Its linked to a new game coming out.
Superman has turned. He got pushed over the edge. Superman demands a world wide ceasefire and enforces it. the story is currently 13 comics in (14 today) they are currently going though the back story of why superman turned.
Looks like it will be a superman and wonder woman (and JL?) v batman comic
Loving it so far and definately worth a read

I have not read the online suff other than bits and pieces I have the original book from before it was online. That was nicely fucked up. I was struggling to work out where to start.
If you like this sort of  stuff I would recommend other Ennis books preacher and the boys. Pretty fucked up but no where in the same league as crosseed for fucked-up-ness.

This reminds me:
I have been reading morning glories. set around 6 people all born on may the 4th who start at americas most exclusive prep school. They quickly find out its fucked up there. The kids parents are paid off to forget their kids if they dont comply they are murdered. The teachers kill the students if they fail an exam and there is a ghost ripping peoples heads off.
(i would link but dont want to search morning glory at work)
So far its been pretty interesting but I am not sure what is going on other than every seems completely fucked. Anyway I am enjoying the story develop

Discovered they're collecting the entire Grendel run into 4 omnibus editions. Finished 1& 2 and very impressed! Previously I was aware only of Hunter Rose and Grendel Prime, but the Christine spar arc was really well paced. Its a sort of crimelord / horror / social commentary type thing.

Only thing I'm now realising is that I'm going to have to find a more secure place to store my comics until the kids are a hell of a lot older.

Young Logan needs a few more years growing until he can access the Wolverine back catalogue...  And then there's Gunsmith Cats!

The Joys of Fatherhood.

I should give you about 1000 wad points for this recommendation. Preacher is the best comic I've ever read, by miles. It's also the most absorbing thing I've read in years.

I must admit that my knowledge of the genre is crap having read nothing since a load of 2000AD stuff (brilliant) as a teenager until recently but fuck me, what a story & what characters. Amazing.

Hilarious, heartbreaking, depressing, disgusting, life affirming, kick ass motherfucking brilliance. A Western with a twist. A Tarantino film that he wouldn't dare attempt to make.

Thanks mate.

Oh and I'm starting on The Boys now & already love the concept.

Also I am ure you have seen the Kick ass film but the book is brilliant. Great art work and a really good story. The film follows it quite close but with a few changes. The second book is even better and the third one book is getting released in a 7 book series starting this week

If you like The Boys and Preacher I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis.

I'd go so far as to say Transmetropolitan is probably one of the best comic book series ever.
Was what got me back into comics in my early 20s

As for the boys I found that it was a bit of a one trick pony whose puerile humour wore off quite quickly but each to their own

Anyone got any ideas for a decent comic for an 8 year old?

I fancied getting him started from issue one and was thinking of the recently re-launched Guardians of the Galaxy, new film out in a few years etc.

If anyone has any other suggestions let me know, preferably one that isn't halfway through a story arc.

Thanks.

I finally got round to reading the first sandman book (yes I know :chair: what took me so long) Brilliant! I am very keen to read the rest now what a great start
gonna buy book two, three and four for my canada trip.

Any other recommendations of comics other than transmetropolitan (thats next after sandman). A little twisted not necessarily good always prevails or superhero.

After Sandman I would definitely be going for Lucifer next which is an excellent spin off of the character from the Sandman series (you should get to him soon). Other stuff I would recommend includes 100 Bullets, Ed Brubakers Criminal series (proper noir) and possibly DMZ (think this is more of a marmite suggestion than the others).

Most probably the formats it can read besides the native one. PDF  at the very least. Others(ePub?) could be a big plus.

Based on the comics people are reading here, you guys may want to take a look at Lone Wolf & Cub.

Published back in 1970, it's one of the first manga ever made. Unlike today's animated kiddy crap, Lone Wolf and Cub has a darker, Asian mythology type of vibe and is very much suitable for adults. There is a buddhist bent to it, oddly enough.

Because it's from a different era, the writing is also different, not at all like hollywood style  arcs but more primitive and brutal, and very japanese.

If you like Tarantino movies, if you like Westerns, if you like Kurosawa, you're guaranteed to like LW&C.

It is available "online", but the small, thick paper back books are well printed and worth their price.

I read comics on my nexus 7.
I have only ever got them from comixology so already in a nice format and good to read. (not as good as a comic though)

The clarity of the screen will be the key thing I guess. So probably resolution/number of pixels is probably worth checking

old nexus 7 was 216 pixel per inch which is fine for reading on
nook HD+ is 256 per inch
new nexus 7 is 323 per inch

I can (still) read comics on my Note 2.

Lots of comics are available in .cbz/.cbt format* and readers are available on all platforms.

I can't imagine format ever being a problem on anything vaguely new.

Lone Wolf and Cub is really really good, but stuff like Astro Boy predates it quite a bit.

The most curious Manga I own is probably the first volume of "onsaito" (Onsight) (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/406372462X/ref=dp_change_lang?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP)

Haha! I haven't seen that one.... "Onsight" vol 1 is a typical shōjo bildungsroman. (<-japanese & german loanwords in the same sentence :dance1:). Girl discovers something to do with her life (normally martial art/cooking/ikebana whatever), in this case bouldering on a trip to Ogawayama, have to endure setbacks, win some friends, endure more setbacks, gain some wisdom, have some successes and so on...

Not that my Japanese is that hot, I mostly look at the pictures to be honest.

unsurprisingly this is because they were also made by Dave McKean

Marvel have announcement that civil war is going to be the basis of the next captain America film.

Next bit has spoliers

It will be interesting how they do this.
I am not the biggest fan of superhero comics but I do go through stages. The key thing for me was that at the end of the book I came out hating iron man. If they do this film how the book reads it could ruin their iron man stories.

If you have not read civil war I can highly recommend it. Another of mark millars works (kick ass, wanted, etc). I am currently making my way through mph which is quite interesting so far but only 3 comics so far.
On a similar note I am looking forward to seeing kingsman which is based on another marks books. The trailer looks really good dispute featuring Colin firth.

Sorry that has just ended up as a bit of a mark Millar fan boy session. So to even it out. He's good but he is not Garth Ennis.

Just finished the 4 books of Borderline http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1556358.Borderline_Volume_1 the first three are excellent but the fourth gets a bit lost

Mixed feelings about The Wake - stylistically brilliant, but the shift from the first part to the second is really jarring (possibly intentional, but the final storyline didn't grab me)

And it's really good. A twist on the Walking Dead / Crossed post apocalyptic theme where a plague has wiped out all the males in the world apart from one young bloke and his pet monkey. Think Preacher fans will appreciate the humour too.

no one seems to have posted In a while so I'd thought I would throw in my last few purchases.  Been steadily working my way through fables whichare pretty good, although it gets all a bit spin off and crossover by volume 13. I bought the new black widow series (tangled Web et al) and fell in love with Marjorie M. Li's writing,  so followed this with both X-23 and Nyx. Proper good stuff and as a die hard wolverine fan, disenchanted since we left madripoor,  X-23 is quite exciting,  almost a fusion of black widow and wolverine.  Marjorie does strong female characters, empowered rather than teen boy fodder.

Can I get a bit of advice from some comic book nerds please? ;)
I've recently found out at a late age that comics are cool as fuck but can be a bit hit and miss on knowing what to read. So what should I jump on next?
So far I've read:
Everything by Chris Ware: I love the Art style, and I really love the box set that he did.
The Walking Dead: I read almost all of this but it got a bit tedious towards the end and I didn't quite finish it (although I'll probably go back to it).
Maus by Art Speigelman?: I thought this was brilliant, and it really stood out as being a brilliant book, it's one I can defo imagine reading again every year or so.
The Preacher: I'm reading this at the minute, and thoroughly enjoying it (although it's still early days, I've nearly finished the first book).

I have zero interest in superheroes or anything like that.
I also quite like the idea of getting into a comic at issue 1 and waiting (and buying) each issue as it comes out. How do you find out what new comics are coming out? Are they weekly/monthly? Do you need to subscribe and get them delivered?

What's the deal with the Japanese 'back to front' paperback comic books? Any recommendations there? The covers tend to have a wiff of juvenile/paedo to them. Are they just for kids? The ones I've seen all look a bit Pokemon, but I haven't really had a proper look.

So does anyone have any recommendations?
I've tried googling a bit but I'm fucked if I know what would be good, Although Sandman seems to get recommended a lot.

What I have recommended previously.

Sandman - just because it is fabulous
Lucifer - spin off featuring Lucifer from Sandman that is at least the equal of Sandman if not better IMO
100 Bullets - really cool concept and the artwork is fantastic
The Boys - superheroes but definitely not in the usual way
Old 2000AD stuff - think Lagerstarfish is still subscribing to the weekly comic but I would be looking at Judge Dredd, Nemesis, ABC Warriors, Slaine for starters - website here (https://www.2000adonline.com/)

There are loads more recommends on this thread alone so read back through and have a look really and feel free to ask - someone will probably have read it on here unless it is really obscure.

Deacon,

are you wanting to read paper or screen? if you lack morals, various electronic versions of great comics can be stolen from artists via torrent sites etc.

Sandman is ace - I read it all on a tablet

Slaine, Nemesis and Halo Jones on paper would be my preference

(Bondage Fairies for a bit of variation)

Freakangels on screen - was all available free (legitimately) online

Crossed (and variations) wherever you can get it - as long as you can enjoy that sort of thing (it was awesome getting one episode at a time online)

I can't get into the Japanese stuff generally

there is no greater pleasure than reading through a boxful of 2000ad comics - maybe search for second hand collections - it's  very nice indeed being able to follow several story lines at once for days at a time

Lagers- I've tried reading them on a tablet but couldn't get into it so its paper all the way (although it is expensive as comics get read much quicker than 'proper' books).
Also if I read them online I wouldn't get to go to the comic book shop on The Wicker which is well cool. It's like a cathedral for nerds and the staff wear a Star Trek style uniform. I love it in there lol.
It seems you hardly save any money buying second hand online (for the stuff I've bought anyway) so I'm paying full price, but is there forums where you can buy stuff from each other cheap?
Google tends to bring up 100s of different forums.

The one on West Street has a selection of comics usually, whether they're any good I've no idea.

When I first moved to Sheffield in '88 I rented a room in the flat above the Comic Shop.  I think the curtains my Grandma made for me are still hanging in the window there - they were last time I drove past.  Can't believe it's nearly twenty years ago...

Lagers, and other aficionados…

Do you have any particular opening pages that you really like? The sort of thing that grabbed you so much you had to sit down and read the whole of the comic then and there?

I'm working on a kids comic style book about the space race and am on the lookout for some inspiration.

I don't think it quite works like that or at least it doesn't for me. While I do have favourite artists an artist is only one part of the collaboration and it is the sum of the parts that makes a comic what it is - great artwork may make something stand out and get you to buy it to see what it's like but if the story is rubbish then you probably aren't going to buy the next episode. Add to that the fact that art work is a very personal thing - I could look at something and be totally blown away from it but you could look at it and just not get what I see in it. Lastly the artwork has to work the story, you would have a hard time telling the story of the space race using an art style like Frank Millar uses in Sin City - as incredible as the huge slabs of monochrome with the very sparsely used splash of one single colour are to look at they don't really work in that scenario.

Sorry - I didn't explain what I meant that well. I'm thinking more about introductory pages that set the scene for that particular story, and probably more the shorter stories rather than novel length ones as the latter aren't trying to cram a lot into a handful of pages.

Like the one below - the introductory page style tends to use a full page pane, plus some background to the story, before breaking into multiple panes on the following page. That one is a pretty nice combination of big type, big punchy illustration and dialogue. But I imagine that fans might have particular favourites.

Style-wise, it's how I draw everything - I'm not looking to style it like someone else. It's more a case of hearing about some great layouts / approaches to type.

It started out with simple full spread illustrations, but the publisher had other ideas, hence trying it this way...

All seven episodes of the first season of Un Monde en Pièces have been translated to English.

Very very cool graphics. Cool use of static animations. Whomever did the translation didn't bother with the puns, but then again that would be almost impossible. There's a graphic or verbal pun in each panel. (The bishop is called “Fou” in French etc...)

Nice to see this thread have some action. Been feeling a bit like I need a comics anonymous nowadays :

"I'm Mark, I'm 45, and a big fan of Saga, and the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
I'm currently trying to wean myself off with some old Wolverine TPB's"

While in danger of maintaining a vanity thread, I've just bought the first book of Monstress.
Thoroughly enjoying its sumptuous artwork and rather dark story, anybody else familiar?
