Really 2004? Will this be the heaviest bouldering guide ever produced?

The Chilcot report of bouldering guides.

That's unfair. Chilcot only took seven years.

At least you will only have to change the cover slightly.

...or, how about The Tench at Pant Ifan:

Lip Flip low start that you did at Ysgo.

I walked past that during the summer and I couldn't even work out where it went!

The only reason I know how "good" all of Petes are is he phones me up to tell me, then a day later Caff phones me up to say how shit they are. Things like the Pant Ifan stuff is exactly why people are so excited by the new guide, guess it won't be ready for my Christmas stocking though.

The number of 7 + 8 fas he has done in the last few years is phenomenal. I reckon he wins overall (bear in mind that fa details are not normally given for easier problems)

Maybe me next (just because I've been at it for twenty years), then Owen Hayward and Martin Crook are very prolific.

Nodder has done a lot of really classic lines - certainly a sizeable proportion of the ones that visitors seek out.

It took me a while to decipher the meaning of your original description - but it does make sense when you get up close. Here's the relevant page:

I reckon Nodder should be on the front.

In terms of outstanding contribution, perhaps. However Pete has pushed ahead on that front in recent years, and he will be losing his position from the slate guide - when we do the revamp of that Caff will be on the front.

The only British bouldering guide I can find with a lady on the cover is the guide to the Peak that isn't the Vertebrate one - I think it'd be cool to see that ratio shift a bit!

Maybe if you think you've got the time. There is a feedback group already, plus a few people doing some detailed proofing, but an extra pair of eyes could help.

My daughter has made the same point to me, especially given the relatively low percentage of female action shots inside the guide.

My vote's for a female.

Pete must be one of the most prolific 'front covers' - Llanberis; Slate (other one?); and 'guidebook photos' ever!

He deserves it though as it reflects how much he's contributed to bouldering, sport and trad. Not just routes and probs either he writes a lot of scripts!

A female on the cover would be a welcome change of tack - although it wouldn't be reflective of who actually contributes first ascents it would reflect the increasing number of women who go bouldering.

Weird that FAs are so skewed to the guys. Maybe it's an exploratory urge thing?

edit -Doylo in a wig and pink E9 pants.

Really glad to hear it's something you've been thinking about.

Just had a flick through Boulder Britain - ~440 pages, and I reckon about 20 shots of girls climbing in the whole thing, the ~40 pages on Scotland have about 20 pictures of guys climbing (I think the book is great, fwiw, just hope that the ratio will change a bit in the future!).

Anyway, really looking forward to getting a copy of the book whoever is on the cover!

My Mrs spoke at the Wimmin's Climbing Symposium about this, as she has put up a few problems in the 6s on Stanage. She used it as an example of 'goal setting' when you can't be cranking at your hardest (in her case, post babies). Anyway, she's definitely into looking for new lines and has got another potential proj lined up.

I would definitely put a woman on the front, given that it's a commercial guidebook and the market for women who go bouldering is boomtastic.

I'm heading to north wales with my GF this weekend. Although it looks like it will rain I could convince her to pull onto The Edge Wall in the pass for a quick photo? At the very least I could get a shot of her looking at Jerry's Roof. ;)

But in all seriousness, a girl on the front cover would be nice. From what I'm aware there's a good scene of strong female boulderers in Wales. A female front cover worthy shot might already exist.

Apologises that these comments aren't making the cover decision easier, you could put a mug shot of Caff on it and I'd still buy it

edit -Doylo in a wig and pink E9 pants.

Most of the fas in the NWB scene are done by the same small group, maybe 10 middle aged blokes, plus another 10 blokes who occasionally do fas.

I've collected many of the images for the guide while crag development has been going on and what you see in the book is to an extent an historical record of how things unfolded. That does mean that there is a low percentage of women and a high percentage of those blokes in the prolific 10 group.

Conscious of this I have on occasion specifically tried to get decent female action shots, but producing the guide has been such a massive, all consuming task that it has often slipped to the bottom of my priority list. I tend to boulder at new or recently developed venues and you don't see anybody at those places, never mind any women willing to climb for the camera.

That being said I have got some really strong female action shots, so don't worry it isn't all just ugly blokes, or Doylo in a wig, or Nodder in a spiderman suit.

we're still focussed on making the book; its a labour of love and has been a long time in the pipeline so to rush the last stretch would be a shame, although we're more than aware we need to get it out!

679 pages of exploration, pleasure, frustration and desperation!

Retail price is comparable per page to other popular bouldering guides:
Vertebrate Peak Bouldering guide - 480 pages @ 5.2 pence per page
GroundUp NW Bouldering - 679 pages @ 5.4 pence
Cockfax Peak Bouldering - 540 pages @ 5.5 pence

BMC Peak Lime North - 528 pages @ 5.3 pence
Onsight North Wales Limestone - 452 pages @ 5.5 pence
Cockfax North Wales Climbs - 450 pages @ 6.6 pence
Cockfax Peak Limestone - 408 pages @ 6.8 pence

:geek:

Cheaper than buying two smaller volumes that would probably have cost around £20 each...

Yeah, what price a lifetime of fun? Maybe we need to reassess the exchange rate for fuck-alls to the pound sterling and peg it to the price of the most eagerly awaited guidebook in history? 1 fuck all = price of the NW bouldering guide? Better than the old gold standard imho.

Picked it up second hand for 0.76 pence per page [emoji3]

Also only used it twice but at 40 pence per route and having saved us from being washed out in the peak, it's a bit more bearable.

Some guy at Cromlech boulders on Tuesdaly seemed to know Si P/ a bit about it... he thought most likely by Christmas!

I guess 'with the publisher' and 'next in line for printing' may not be the same thing?

I'd exercise patience basically, who knows when it will arrive..

I can confirm that I have no video evidence of this not being at the printers.

Yes but how many runs of other material does the printer have to do before NWB? In other words, when will they actually print it?

And where is the printers? Is it in China and the books will be shipped back to the UK on a very slow moving container ship? How much ransom are somali pirates going to want for it?

Let's hope they don't see this thread, otherwise NWB prices are going to soar.

Hopefully it's not at some dodgy printers in Romania and ends up being sent back to be re-printed. I'm sure that's never happened before.

Printers in Aberystwyth. Probably get back quicker from China than there though. Seems the wait is nearly over.

If its the same people that printed and bound my thesis (lovely little print shop - tucked away in the middle of town) they will do an amazing job - but take weeks... for each one :)

Pleased its being printed in Wales though...

I'd heard on good authority it was at a secret printing press in a small cave on the Little Orme..

Agreed, picked our copy up from V12 last weekend, immediately proved its worth when the heavens opened in the Pass and we were able to bail to Pantymwyn as a small detour on our way home. It's great to see all of the new developments written up in a visitor-friendly format and the production really is top-notch. Can't wait to visit more of the crags.

Yer, fantastic effort guys. A real encyclopedia.  It's hard to appreciate just how much effort must've gone into this thing when page flicking but wow. I love the ground up graphic style aswell. Best money I have spent for an awfully long time.

Agreed, the price tag is misleading, this is excellent value for money for what you get and an amazing effort. As someone who can't help but nerdily flick through guidebooks at home there's almost too much stuff in here - I've got no idea where I'm going to go next in North Wales as there's too many options now (assuming it's not raining for once)!
