Pretty serious case of sloppy QC. That sling is serious!

Items are from late 2014-early 2016.

The occasional recall for a manufacturing or design fault - DMM, Petzl, Wild Country - is a sign of a responsible company. Spectacularly bad inspection / QC like this doesn't engender confidence. Black Diamond seem to have lost the plot somewhat in recent years.

Hold on, we're saying masking tape isn't load bearing now?

wtf? I thought each carabiner was individually inspected before shipping. That's some shocking faults to have passed the inspection.

Hold on, we're saying masking tape isn't load bearing now?

it needs wrapping round 3 times to comply with EU standards

if UKIP get their way, we can get away with a single wrap of British made masking tape

Those both look like deadly serious snafus!

That sling! How does that even happen?! Imagine the thought process in somebody's head in the factory. They must have seen that it was not stitched, looked in the drawer, found the masking tape, taken the required length, and carefully wrapped it around, and then passed it on to the "For sale" bin.

What. The. Fuck.

First the drop zone, and now this. What are they doing?

doing great profit, by cutting costs, one assumes.

Basically what everyone assumed would happen when they where sold to a private equity company.

The tape one is a bit of a puzzler, as any climber with half a brain would take one look at it and know something was badly wrong. So probably not actually a safety issue really as you'd have to be an idiot to lead on it. However since it's a bleedin obvious issue how has it taken them until now to uncover it if it's been going on since late 2014?

most sales went to hipsters for use as keyrings and top-knot restrainers;  they thought it was meant to be part of the I-really-used-to-use-this-for-climbing look

if I went to buy a sling from a shop in person and it had a loop of masking tape on it, it'd not even make it to the till without me querying what was wrong with it. I'm pretty sure any sales assistant would also take one look at it and wonder that too. In fact, casting my mind back to when I worked in a climbing shop, if I'd received a box of stock with them in it I'd have been straight on to the distributor and they'd have not even made it to the shelves.

When you buy large quantities of tape it comes on long reels of x many meters. Sometimes these reels will have a join in the middle where they didn't have enough to make a full reel, so they start feeding from a new source and join together the two ends with a little bit of tape.

Pretty shonky to miss this (it should certainly be a standard bit of QC) though not as bad as your imagined scenario.

Contrary to what I assumed, it seems like the QC issues started to appear when BD moved back production to US. No gear manufactured in China seems implicated in this qc scandal.

I can't imagine that the nation that gave the world Donald Trump will be big on quality control.

Is Trump's hair stuck on with masking tape?

Is Trump's hair stuck on with masking tape?

Find out by Trumping Donald (http://trumpdonald.org/) and seeing if it flies away.

Do you know about the UFO http://www.czechclimbing.com/clanek.php?key=10426&nazev=ufo_-_soft_webing_friend_device

Works quite well in parallell cracks. My mate bought one when we were in Adrspach. Placed it as soon as it fitted. Seemed solid enough.

Used them in Chulilla on a crack climb one day in Feb - really nice.

I bought some of these quickdraws because they were cheap and so am I.

A number of comments on the thread talked about having similar experiences and decking out because of it.

I've sent a DM to Black Diamond to see if they can give any reassurance. WTF is going on?!
