Please post on this thread if you come across sale shoes online anywhere! That way we can all find cheap shoes when we need some. Because I can't find any anywhere...

Are the Visions a good shoe? I'm thinking of ordering some to replace
my ageing Scarpa Vantages.
-
Anyone know how the Boreal crux fit? They have a 10 which might be in my range if they run small. I wear a 9.5 miura vs and a 10.5 evolv optimus.
-
My Scarp Visions just arrived. Seem pretty good, good fit too! Not bad for £40 deilivered :)
-
Gremlin, hope you get on with them ok. I know a few people who love their visions. I had velcros of them but they were too flexible for me. The lace ups are stiffer.
EB tends to be more expensive than most, so I don't know how these price up.
La Sportiva Katana = £74.99 (http://www.ellis-brigham.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi?prod_code_in=135502)
Scarpa Vortex = £37.49 (http://www.ellis-brigham.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi?prod_code_in=135005)
Other shizzle (http://www.ellis-brigham.com/cgi-bin/psProdSrch.cgi?&transid=&search_text=climb-sale&formCategory=All&formBrand=All&sale=&mode=33188&config=1,0,0,1&srchType=&rowsFound=24&pageLimit=72&orderBy=&max_price=&Gender=&colourCodes=)

I got the lace-ups, tho' I do find I have to pay special attention to the way I lace them up to get the shoes nice and snug across my entire foot or they do seem a bit flexy.

Leeds wall had some Teams in today at 57(or 65 maybe) squid. For those amongst us requiring either clown shoes or those slight of hoof. 5-6 and 9-10 only(at this price).
-
Tried the teams on again the other day, they just don't fit :(
-
I just got a pair of katanas for £62 from Go ourtdoors. I went in picked up a pair then invoked the price match thingy by showing them this:

Some good deals here at rock+run (odd sizes though)

So you could pay them £7 more ? That's what I call supporting your local retailer. Very commendable.

£90 at Go Outdoors (http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/sportiva-mens-katana-sportiva-climbing-shoes-p117216) but their price match policy includes 10% less than the other advertised price so £69 (http://www.nevisport.com/results.asp?search=katana) less 10% leaves the (rounded) figure of £62.
-
What slackers said.
For info though, the other supplier that you're price matching with must have the size you want in stock or go outdoors won't match it.
-
BB / Slackers
Cheers. That 10% extra discount is well worth knowing about.
(Sorry about the earlier comment - I thought I was being amusing but it just looks sarky now)

I forgive you, but if it happens again I'll pay Slackers to inform you of the benefits of open source software. ;D

For anyone trying to exploit this deal in London I just rang the new Go Outdoors in Colindale. They had never heard of katanas, said they didn't have any and had no idea when they would be getting any. Fuck my urban life
-
They've got them in Swindon, but have limited sizes. If anyone wants me to check size availability or get them a pair (subject to credit check ;)) then I can nip out during my lunchbreak sometime.

I've paid £80 actually but that's not the point!

supposedly there is to be a couple of price increases coming soon on some of the ~85 quid boots so in the end Jasper, you're not going to have much choice (maybe if you bought your other shoes at Next?)

It's ok. I've climbed so little in the past year ( :( ) that I have two virtually new pairs, one of which was free and the other pair that cost me £35. Once they get anywhere near wearing out I'll start scouring the internet bargain bins ( ;D ).
Suppose the thing that surprised me was the disparity between some shoes at £75 - £85 and others at £115. And the fact that (as 90% of climbers are total punters) people must be buying the more expensive ones in the mistaken belief that it will make them better at climbing?

You mean expensive shoes don't help me climb better? I've no hope :P

anyone rate/dis the magos?
I have probably got more climbing out of my Magos than any shoe in twenty years. They're seemingly indestructable. I've had them for over 2 years now and I'm still not through the sole and they have retained their shape. Depends whether they fit your feet of course, but I've quite liked them for steep stuff. They're more 'clumpy' than 5.10s and not as nice to climb in for me, but the heel is very good.
-
Nice one on the Teams heads up
-
anyone rate/dis the magos?
They are great, super comfy too( for me at least). I notice they've only got 39/39.5/45s though.

I need Magos in 44 :'( The Works were selling them at £40 but I missed my chance to grab a pair.
I might just get another pair of dragons and avoid slabs!
-
They're selling Boosters in that size. For £45.
-
Do Magos have the same heel as Boosters? Can't believe they discontinued the Spectros! :boohoo:
-
As I don't have any Boosters not 100% sure but they appear similar. I thought the Boosters WERE the Magos, minus laces and the toe-stiffening midsole.
-
just seen the la sportiva scorpions on rock n run £36.50.

http://www.planetfear.com/browse/RockShoes_1642_0_0.html (http://www.planetfear.com/browse/RockShoes_1642_0_0.html)
however i was in their shop in keswick the other day, and you get at least 15% off instore as a member (which is free) and this makes for some pretty good wee bargains. Dude said i could call in, sort membership over the phone and order that way if i wanted.

Do the Mago's fit the same as the Spectro's?
-
Do the Mago's fit the same as the Spectro's?
No, the mago's feel smaller for the same number size.
-
Yes but...comfier although smaller. Bit squashed on big toe till worn in but that goes away. My Spectros are the same size as my Magos, which are the better shoe (ie Magos are ) and I thought the Spectros were great, although painful till worn in. In fact I liked the Magos so much that although I didn't buy the company, I did buy 2 pairs from the Works when they had them half price.
-

Damn you! I missed out on that offer, by the time I found out they had sold out of my size
Had to settle for a second pair of Dragons from Camp4 for 65 Quid
-
The Mago's have been ordered. If they're better than the Spectro's (which I think are fab for Lime routes) then I'll be proper impressed.
-
I think they are. Hope they give you good service.

Where are the rock BOOTS for those who regret RDs and PAs?
-
Where are the rock BOOTS for those who regret RDs and PAs?
I can't see why anyone in the UK would regret the passing of RDs or PAs. I've climbed in some of those old boots and they were rubbish! Bare feet were a better option in many circumstances.
Several manufacturers make high-tops aimed at the US thrashing-up-wide-cracks market (example (http://fiveten.com/products/footwear-detail/62-grandstone)) and I almost see the point here. Alternatively, leather ankle protectors work well and leave you with a better shoe for the 99% of the time you're not climbing offwidths.

I'm delighted with my 45 quid Scarpa Boosters from Rock & Run and would definitely buy another pair, but R&R are now showing 43s as out of stock :(
What's the equivalent shoe in the current Scarpa lineup, so that I can watch for when they go out of production / on sale?
-
Mago but they're stiffer.
-
Cotswolds in Liverpool has some Evolv Pontas' for £50.
:off: but they also have 3 WC Tech friends for £100. Posted this on UKC but the deal nazi's pulled the thread. Mick and his cronies probably have all the gear they need.
-

More likely that they'd rather have Cotswold pay them to advertise their offers.
-

The Booster. It is still in the line-up, just not imported to the UK. There isn't really an equivalent in the shoes that come in to the UK now - the Vapours are a more comfy all-day trad type shoe (although very good at that) and the instincts just don't have the toe power the booster had.

So it is, although I'm a bit taken aback by Scarpa's website (http://it.scarpa.net/prodotti/climbing/booster/) where it says "consigliata per ... multi pitch" :o

looks ok to me ;) (http://en.scarpa.net/products/climbing/booster/)
I still think the nearest is the Mago, with added midsole and laces of course. Don't think they're importing them either, come to think of it.

They've still got blues in 6.5 and 7.5 and pinks in in 4.5 and below for the a similar price. Website seemed a bit shonky so ordered by phone instead, arrived next day.

Rockover have scarpa instinct lace-ups going for £65 - seems a bit cheaper that elsewhere if you are in the vicinity and in the market for this shoe. No size 7s though.

Planetfear seem to be offering a 15% discount on all sale items, making 5.10 Teams and Verdes particularly good value at £63 posted. they don't seem to have many of these left, haven't checked their other sale boots...

Currently UK8, 10, 11 and 12

Ah, very logical.

I'm struggling to shift my perception of 'cheap' fast enough to catch up with this lot. They all laughed when i bought three pairs last year. Ebay for the next ones i reckon
-
I hear you. Bought a few pairs last time I was stateside and they are wearing low.

Picked up a pair of Projects for 59.99 today in Needlesports. They still had a couple of pairs in odd sizes as well as a large pair of Jet 7's for around the same price.

May be of interest to a few. Picked up a pair of the old style 5.10 Anasazi velcros from Rock On at Mile End Climbing wall for £45, limited sizes & stock.

Works selling Magos for £50.
Mago sizing versus Booster sizing?
I took a punt on some size 43 Boosters mail order from Rock & Run last Autumn (street shoe size 45) & they turned out to be excellent for bouldering: super precise & powerful on small holds; uncomfortable but not outright painful. Works still has 43 Magos in stock. Laces obviously less good than velcro for a bouldering shoe, but are they otherwise similar?
-
I have 43 Magos and take a 45 in normal trainers. I suspect they'll be the same as the Boosters, as I'm a 43 in the Instincts so they seem to be pretty consistent...

I ordered a pair of FreeRunners in my size for £40. Got an email saying that they had to cancel the order due to not having that size in stock. Went back online to see if they had the next size (I'm between a 45 and 46) only to find that they had put the price up by £16.
E mailed them to see if they'll send me a 46 for the same price....
This cheap shoes lark isn't as easy as it looks.

Rock and run have some cheapish ~£65 5.10s if you have boats for feet (9 and up).

Wholesale jordan shoes are not very hot search on the internet, while Designer handbags look better. This is a search habit. Actually, recently, it is said that how people are prefencial to search for wholesale air jordans shoes on internet. This survey shows us cheap jordan shoes are always the most popular in the luxury brand shoes field. Why air jordan shoes are so popular in the world? According to the investigation, we can simply divide the wholesale handbags to 2 sorts. As we all know. USA and UK are the most mainly market for discount handbags, therefore, these two kinds of key words are searched by many times as well. That’s to say, you need to do some work at first online for Cheap clothes so that you will not be cheated. Let’s tell you the shopping skills. If you really like wholesale jordan shoes, don’t care about your money; just go for them at least once.

What's the deal with outside Europe and ordering shoes from the UK? Can I somehow get the VAT knocked off?
When I was in Oz I got my parents to buy me some shoes and post them through, wrapped up and marked as a present.
Guess you could ask nicely if shops would do this, although it might be worth checking out the Australian Customs guidelines on Internet purchases (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp) (which indicate that unless your shoes are > $1000 AUD then you should be fine ;))
-
Some sort of Scarpa rock boot were in Decathlon in Logport yesterday.. dont know what model but they were Velcro, red and didn't look very good £70.. Still it may be someones bag..

Yeah, I know i could do it that way, but I don't really want to pay VAT either. I don't want any of my hard earned Aussie dollars going towards striking teachers :worms: ;)

ebay - narrow your search to "five ten shoes" and ignore the biking/freerunning ones. Including "rock" or "climbing" in the search seems to miss some pairs of 5.10 rock climbing shoes for some reason.
I've just scored 2 pairs of unused pinks for less than the price of a new pair of greens

good plan. need to figure out my size first though.. hhmmmmm

The stix are fantastic, very similar in shape to the boosters, just with thinner rubber, so you can feel/smear a bit better. They do wear out pretty quickly though.

Galileos? Katanas? Spirit VCR IZ?
-
Was considering Galileos, which I had before and loved, but they're not as stiff and are a bit aggressive in the heel (I could try to modify them).
Had considered the chili's. Again, not as stiff, but might be good otherwise. I haven't had a chance to play with the latest model which is supposed to be reasonably technical.
Hadn't considered Katanas... Will take a look

i saw this too.... so anyone tell me what size proj / hornet to go for if i am a 6 in velcros or blancos and a 7 in dragons?
-
Can't help with sizings but the projects had a weird fit. If you get on with Jet7 type shoes you'll be ok but personally they didn't fit well at all.
The hornets are VERY soft.
Bananafingers have a shoeculator which suggests adding 1 size (so 7) for the hornets. It doesn't seem to cover the projects.

If its any help Toby, I wear:
Anasazi 8, dragon 8.5/9, hornet 8.5, project 8.

20% off all shoes at climbnewcastle.com. Boostics for 88quid!!!
-
This is obviously out of most peoples' way, but on a rainy rest day in paris yesterday, i picked myself up a pair of solutions and a pair of boostics (which scarpa uk said don't come in my size), both at relatively low prices. they also have a shoe sale on on the 13th October, but I'd imagine there'll be limited stock in various sizes. On previous visits to said shop, I had found the prices to be a little on the high side, but they seem to be competing with even Decathlon on price.
solutions (http://www.auvieuxcampeur.fr/terre/chaussons-d/chaussons-d/solution-m-chausson-velcro.html)
poohstics (http://www.auvieuxcampeur.fr/terre/chaussons-d/chaussons-d/bosstic-m-chausson-velcro.html)
They certainly had more size options left in stock than any uk company as far as boostics go and definitely had solutions to fit people with normal sized feet.
-
I picked up a pair of Anasazi Velcro's from the shop at the Logport wall last week for £85... not a bargain, but as bout as cheap as you see them...

It seems like most walls/shops only got 1 pair in each size to start with. i don't understand wtf scarpa are playing at. I'm just fortunate that i got hold of lots of pairs of stix (thanks iain, springer), but i've needed a stiff shoe for about 8 months now.
-
I wasn't after the Scarpas (of any model).
-
I wasn't after the Scarpas (of any model).
Yeah, well that doesn't change the fact that i ignored :P
-
It seems like most walls/shops only got 1 pair in each size to start with.
Not every shop ;)
Thing is though, if a shop is looking at spending a grand, just to get one of most sizes of one single model and more like 2 grand to get a reasonable stock (every size, double on popular sizes, triple on very popular), more expensive models obviously would cost even more than that, plus the VAT, would a shop/wall choose to spend 20k on 10 models and good stock quantities, or 20 models but having to reorder more regularly?
As a customer would you rather shop somewhere showing 10 models or 20? More choice right? And shops still have to sell most models at a discount in order to sell any. Shops still have to buy them in at the same price. I honestly don't know how anyone makes any money in this business.
Sorry... think I went off on a tangent there.
-
Tbh i'd be happy with less choice, since most of the different models just seem to be manufacturers unneccessarily reinventing the wheel. I don't expect every shop to carry the same stock.
I appreciate that it is a large initial financial outlay for a shop or wall to get in decent stock. Really i'm annoyed with the manufacturers for being more than a bit crap recently when it comes to supplying their performance shoes to the uk.
It would be interesting to do a ukb poll to see what shoes they would buy if they could get hold of them. I appreciate that this would not cover entry level shoes, but still might be of interest to see how many different models are actually in demand.
-
OK, so lets set up a poll... find out what peoples present favourite (as in presently available) shoes are.. if we get an idea of the popular ones from different brands here these can then be plugged into a UKB poll..
I know nothing about other brands as I'm a 2 horse 5:10 person.. so for me its
Anasazi Velcro's
Dragons
-
I agree. Some decisions made re: choosing to import or not import certain models seems idiotic. I for one love la sportiva cobras. Favourite shoes are cobras, speedsters, anasazi LVs. Not tried the futuras yet but am quite keen - my speedsters have been excellent - and also lasted longer than any other pair of shoes i have owned - 18 months pretty much continuous use and still going.
-

I'm now down to just velcros as my last pair of Stix went walk abouts. :(

Velcros for most things
Blancos for edges
Dragons or Testarossas for toe down
Galileos for trad (or really long sport routes)
Imelda Marcos? I don't usually have all of these on the go at the same time.
-
Greens for smearing
Whites for edging
Only just got my first pair of downturned shoes so can't comment on my favourites for that yet, particularly as my choice was based on being able to get them for free.

5.10s are for losers.
Scarpa Instinct lace-ups all the way.

PINK ANASAZI FOR EVERYTHING!
(...prefereably worn while eating a pain au chocolat...)
More seriously...
Velcros for most stuff (one pair knackered and soft, one pair newer and stiffer)
Dragons for steep / anything requiring a working heel
-
Steep Sport: Scarpa Magos
Trad/Smeary Vertical and Less Overhanging bouldering: Scarpa Vapour Velcro
Hard bouldering: Scarpa Stix/5.10 Dragons
Getting annoyed with bagged out pieces of crap, 5.10 Blancos.
-
Indoors 5.10 5x
Everything else velcro's/quantum
-
Used to buy (and will continue to use) stix for most things, then instinct slippers, which are lovely if a little soft, but really need something with velcro when i come up short.
Have just purchased boostics, which actually fit my feet better than the boosters/rockette did and have also got solutions (which most people who own seem to like a lot)
I used to be a 5.10 fan until scarpa started making shoes that fitted nicely and wore pinks almost exclusively, with the odd pair of anasazi velcros thrown in for good measure.
-
OK so we've got Scarpa and 5:10 covered (I think) - anyone with the la Sportiva side? Testarossa's have been mentioned, Solutions I guess?
any more for any more?
-
should i buy that cheap pair of pontas I've seen?

-
should i buy that cheap pair of pontas I've seen?

Hell i even almost bought a pair of boldrinis out of desperation ;)
-
Scarpa Magos: limestone and boards
Scarpa Instinct lace: everything else.
-
no La Sportiva fanboi's out there?
calling the Boreal massive...
-
Testarossas - but I'm not sure these are even available in the UK?
Boreals (currently falcons) because no other heels will stay on my feet. If only I could get falcons and testarossas to become sole-mates and take the footsying to another level, I'd wear their babies. (Obviously I'd drown the ones with falcon toes and testarossa heels).
-
Scarpa Magos: limestone and boards
Scarpa Instinct lace: everything else.
Have you tried the instincts on lime? I was quickly converted from the Magos when I got my first pair 2 years ago, I find them much better for pulling with my toes on steep ground.
-
Thanks - I'll take them to the Tor if it dries and compare. The Vibram Grip2 is noticeably sticker than the first stuff. I quite like the Magos tho - when they got discounted at the Works I bought 3 pairs :)
-
no La Sportiva fanboi's out there?
I wear Katana laces for various stuff, first pair of the pointy-toe genre not sure if I'll stick with them next time (would have to remove a toe to get Dragons on).
otherwise greens or velcros for most non-lime stuff
-
OK, so lets set up a poll... find out what peoples present favourite (as in presently available) shoes are..
Scarpa Vapour Velcros (vertical & steeper lime)
Red Chilli Corona (indoor)
-
So far I count 15 people (I'm adding myself here), mentioning:
Scarpa Mago
Scarpa Instinct Lace
Scarpa Instinct Slipper
Scarpa Stix
Scarpa Boostics
Scarpa Vapour Velcro
La Sportiva Solutions
La Sportiva Cobra
La Sportiva Speedster
La Sportiva Testarossa
La Sportiva Katana Lace
5.10 Anasazi Velcro
5.10 5X
5.10 Quantum
5.10 Dragon
5.10 Anasazi V2
5.10 Anasazi Verde
5.10 Galileo
Red Chilli Corona
Boreal Falcon
That's 20 different models. And as mentioned, this isn't going to include entry-level shoes. And nobody's mentioned the Miura VS, Arrowheads, Teams (all of which are popular), but nobody's said them, so they don't go on the list.
I'll grant that Anasazi Velcros crop up more than most, hence why everyone and their dog stocks them, but in order for a shop to entice as many customers as possible, they've got to offer everyone's favourites, as well as alternative models (just to try), and then they don't want to alienate the beginners, so to please those 11 people, and as many other people as possible, you're looking at 25 models, bare minimum. Maybe add a few more for women's fit too.
Anyway.... I've accidentally hijacked this thread. Sorry.

Evolv?
-
Does anyone pay money for evolvs??
On the subject of stocking multiples of a size - it can be really useful due to the variation within a given size which I've experienced with 5.10 (major issue) and Scarpa (less so but still sometimes notable).
-
Yes, me, because they fit me far better than 5.10 (massive heels), Scarpa (massive toe box) and La Sportiva (doesn't feel right for some reason).
-
Sad thing for me is no shop can stock my shoe of choice because lyon won't import them. Like the sound of the testarossa's too but wait! Nope, won't import them either. Have become alot more disappointed with la sportiva recently since they started putting XS edge on a number of their models - it just doesn't perform anywhere near well as XS Grip 2.
-
Scarpa (less so but still sometimes notable).
I couldn't choose between the Instinct Slippers in a 40, or a 41.5! I love them, but there can be a massive difference from one batch to the next. Even more than 5.10!
-

Maybe it's got worse? I got a new pair the other day and had to try on a couple of different 42.5s to get one that felt right; previously I've just stuck one of that size on and had no problems, or mail ordered them with no issues. (I've worn 42.5 in them for 2 years solid now, probably ~10 pairs - someone must be making money out of this!)
-
Maybe it's got worse?
I think it might've been one particularly "unusual" batch.
-
I regularly order Scarpas online (I've had Magos, Boosters, Vapour Velcros and Stix and all fitted fine)

Andi if you buy evolv, beyond hope are having a sample sale this Sunday in uppermill. Might be worth a visit stuff was dirt cheap last time
This Sunday we are running one of our quarterly sample sales. We will be at Uppermill Museum with past season samples and stock from prAna, Metolius and Evolv.
Once again, we will be running the event in conjunction with local store Mountain Feet and the new specialist climbing shop The Crag Station.
Mountain Feet will be there with great discounts on specialist footwear, and The Crag Station will have introductory vouchers for their shop opening this weekend.
Sunday 30th September 10am - 4pm
Saddleworth Museum, Uppermill
Crag station say they stock 5.10 and sportiva on there website. I have not checked the shop out yet and they weren't at the last sale so I do not know if the offers will be that good or not.
-
Cheers, probably won't be able to get to Uppermill on Saturday though (and I've recently bought two new pairs!)
-

I follow your logic.
We need some sort of weighted ranking system to go along with choice, there would obviously always be the staples (anasazis etc), which most people could not function without.
I was thinking about the whole variety thing a lot more and if stix, instincts, boostics etc didn't exist, I'd be completely happy with rockettes and only rockettes, (which aren't really a ladies fit, just a different colour). In saying that, I used to love the dominator lace ups and was gutted when they stopped making them, I must've gone through 8 pairs, they were perfect for me on all terrain, i owned no other shoes at that point in time. Do people actually spend more money on rockshoes in the long run as a result of there being more models available? If so mfrs are doing the right thing
As far as entry level shoes go, it is understandable that each mfr makes a pair, but a shop shouldn't attempt to stock an entry level shoe from every mfr, a shit shoe is a shit shoe after all.
I guess shops may make money from novelty shoes alternative models, but i wouldn't have thought so.
-
Anasazi velcros for all-around performance, or Verdes, especially when I used to climb trad. Incidentally, does anyone else wish there was a lace-up with the exact same shape as the velcros? The Verdes are more symmetric and less precise and the Blancos are too narrow. I am recent convert to Dragons for steep or precise stuff - I have been amazed at how well they suit me for Malham's leaning technicalities (but dread having to break-in another pair).
I used to love Sportiva; my favourite "steep shoes" were venom slippers but they stopped making them and I got fed up with how quickly the toes of Katanas wore through. A pair of cheap Miuras almost reawakened the faith but they stretched a lot, very quickly (and life's too short to waste time second-guessing the stretchiness of suede).
-
+1 for
La Sport Solution - Bouldering without a heel hook
Miura VS - Sport and Bouldering with heel hook :)
I REALLY want to try some Scarpa's, but we don't have anyone local who carries a good Scarpa selection for me to try on for size/fit. I've got a ridiculously wide foot, more like a flipper, so almost all shoes fit me weird....
-
I used to love my 5.10's but I eventually tired of the sloppy heals and switched to Sportiva for most stuff.
5.10 -
Anasazi VCS - Good all rounder, shit heel.
Arrowhead - Awesome for standing on tiny nubbins and toeing in to pockets, very precise and satisfying. Except once they had fully stretched out my heel literally fell out of the shoe when toeing in on holds.
Newtons - Solid all day trad shoe, comfortable but about as aggressive as a clown shoe.
La Sportiva -
Miura Lace - THE all round top performance shoe, imo. It fits like a glove and edges like a beast. Probably not the best for grit until well broken in but I'm no fan of grit anyhow.
Miura VS - As above, sized another half size down from my lace ups for red points and steeper stuff. Sexy shoes. Shame I can't wear them for longer periods, boo.
Evolv -
Bandits - Recently picked up a pair for training indoors, comfy and fit my foot perfectly, cheap too.
-

Best Shoe Ever.
Miura VS - As above, sized another half size down from my lace ups for red points and steeper stuff. Sexy shoes. Shame I can't wear them for longer periods, boo.
Didn't like the fit of these when I tried them in the shop, even though they're supposed to be the same last (P75) as the Laces.
Was much less impressed with Katanas. Velcro Katanas broke down quickly and lost all semblance of support, and I just don't feel secure in Katana Laces. Probably they're too broad for my feet - noticeably wider than same size Miuras.
(What does any of this have to do with "cheap", apart from the fact that nobody has mentioned Boldrinis?)
-

Yeah, weird how they're supposedly the same last, almost everyone I know who has compared them thinks they have a different fit, possibly due to the P3 platform giving more of a downturn? If anything, they fit my feet better than the laces, I just sized them a bit too tightly for long term comfort. They do feel like you're wearing rubber talons on your feet tho, ace :)
-
I am on my first pair of Muira velcros and I think they are fantastic. I never liked the lace up version at all.
I find my greens are better for pure slabbing but the the VSs are better for everything else, and the heel is fantastic. I love them.

I am disgustingly smug because I have an excellent local shop that does e.g. Miura Laces for 99 Euros plus 10% discount for purchases over 100 Euros, so I just have buy a couple of metres of ab tat - always useful given my level of alpine ability - or a krab, and voila, 72 quid Miuras. (They don't do mail order)
And four hours down the road is Arco, the discount climbing gear capital of the world.

can anyone give me a comparison of the projects and the teams? have got the teams at the moment and i love them, but they are wearing thin and with those at only £50....
-
Projects are way softer than teams and have a heel that is too shallow, so it peels off even when fitted super tight. For me at least!

hmmm the heel is that best bit of the teams, will think about it then...
edit: sizing wise are they basically the same though?
-
they're made by 5.10 - this should tell you the answer
-
they're made by 5.10 - this should tell you the answer
I always remember Dave's "you're lucky if you get a left and a right shoe in the box" quote when it comes to buying 5:10s...I've got 6 pairs of varying models and stages of wear and if I remember rightly they're all different sizes!
-
Hmm... maybe the Addidas take over has had a positive impact, as last set of velcros I bought (couple of months ago) seemed far less random in sizing (as in I tried a couple the same size, and they seemed the same - and the size larger and size smaller were (unbelievably) larger and smaller!)...
-
As others have said it can be a lottery! I have a pair a full size down and another a half size down from my teams. (bought the 2nd pair as they were on sale for cheap and figured I'd use them in font as the first pair worked well there).

edit: does not appear to get 20% off. it's removing 11% (ish) on the 5.10's i tried.
edit2: ah, 20% off RRP. Some shoes already have an RRP discount, so this bumps it to 20%.
-
Bananafingers shoes are always on good deals. They're already at a fair old discount but you can get an extra 10% off your order, discounted or not, with referrer codes that people keep spamming on UKC and elsewhere. Typically works out at ~25-30% off RRP on 5.10s. Blancos are £85.50, velcros and greens for £81, the real bargains are LVs at £75 for the small-heeled amongst us or arrowheads (most sizes) for £64(!!)
Just bought some shoes from them, I assume they'll eventually give me a code to spam to the world at some stage (as far as I can gather, get enough people to use it and you get a personal 25% off code, that's the incentive). Not totally convinced by this logic, I assumed it was BF spamming the shit out of UKC themselves when I first saw them and sort of avoided it by principle, really don't agree with deals like this that encourage spam but hey ho, cheap shoes. I've not been given one (yet) but there are various valid ones here (scroll right to the bottom for the still-valid ones) (http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/gear/banana-fingers-discount-code/53143.html)
Fwiw, I hear they're pretty good with size-swapping
-
Fwiw, I hear they're pretty good with size-swapping
From personal experience, their customer service is top notch. I've exchanged a few pairs of shoes/items of clothing and the new ones always came back super quick.
-
Word.
Any size 39.5 Katana velcros around at the moment? When we were in Italy they were unbelievably cheap. Should have stocked up :slap:
-
I know one of the owners of BananaFingers and spoke to him about the discount code situation. Apparently, after posting some legit discount codes on facebook, etc, people started asking for like 10% ones in return for giving BF their business. They then started posting them on here and UKC, etc, for all to use. He's certainly not spamming himself and not offering incentives for getting people to spam codes. I just think that if at the time when someone tries to use the code (whether it's expired or not), if it's cost beneficial to honour it so that they get the business then they do so.
I think you should supply some evidence before spouting stuff like this.
-
I think you should supply some evidence before spouting stuff like this.
I didn't say that. What I said is that the result is 'people keep spamming them on UKC' which is true; every week I see another thread appear and be deleted by the mods (and I'm nowhere near a F5-hitting UKC reader)
They are referrer link codes and there is incentive for individuals to spread them far and wide, people aren't sharing through the goodness of their hearts (since there are so many knocking around they're easy to find). Here's a copy of the email they just sent me:
All you have to do is share the link below with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or by email and they will get 10% off for their first order. In return, you'll get a reward voucher depending on the number of orders placed by your friends.
If your friends order: You receive a reward coupon of:

3 or more times 15% Off
6 or more times 20% Off
Here's mine (http://www.bananafingers.co.uk/refhny.php?c=OGIxMzUzNWI5Mg%2c%2c) Feel free to use it so I can get more cheap shoes< and here we have the crux of it. Despite all this I've gone and fucking posted it to greedily try and get 20% off my next order. However you sugar-coat that, it's spammy. The pretty short time limit on individuals voucher codes means that if you want six people to use it, you're going to have to bung it on facebook, stick it on twitter, and more likely, share it with hundreds of people you don't know via UKB/C/outdoorswhateverforums. The twist to it all is that everyone can keep telling themselves that it's mutually beneficial advertising that helps people get cheap shoes, and BF to sell more stuff.
To get back on track, the previous best place to get katanas from was gooutdoors with a 10% off price match of someone cheaper. Might be worth adding katanas to basket on bananafingers at £99, going through to checkout, applying discount, then printing off and taking to gooutdoors and see if they'll pricematch the reduced price, minus another 10%.

Well that certainly looks like evidence. I apologise, as it seems things have escalated since I last spoke with BF. I guess they're trying to benefit from all of the people requesting codes from them. He's quite the entrepreneur!
I still stick by the comment that BF aren't the ones making the posts though and I'm sure they never intended for people to spam websites with them.

No more left in stock at that price to get a replacement.
Of course I can send them back for a refund, but just wondered if anyone in Sheff wanted them so I didn't have to wrap them up, go to the post office, stand in line at the post office, listen to people talk bollox in the post office, try and avoid the stare of the nutter in the post office and pay for to send them back
£50 the same as I paid to be left at a wall in Sheff or dropped off if you don't live too far away

Whats the sizing like on hornets compared to teams?
-
Not sure about teams but I'm 9 1/2 in Hornets, 8 / 8 1/2 in Anazazi's, 8's in scarpa shoes.
-
They aren't reduced but the Simond velcros from Decathlon (the lime green ones) are actually a really good buy at 60 quid. Same rubber as Sportivas and good fit. Remind me of some old Sportiva velcros I had years ago but not as stiff...

Bump! anyone have any deals to share? currently in the market for a new pair of shoes.
-
How do people find the evolv primes? they look good but never seen them sold anywhere to try on
Just bought a pair of the laces. Usually wear Bandits in size 7.5, the lace ones are slightly tighter but have the Primes in an 8.5. The fit is near the same but more room for the four littler toes it would seem. I'd say they're comfier than my Bandit laces but not the velcro. Was told to go up a full size at some Evolv day with Ben Bransby - he may climb alright but he knows his shoe sizing for sure.
Not climbed in them enough yet to comment any further, other than to say, they may as well be made of rubber as there's hardly any material anywhere.
-
http://www.rockrun.com/products/Evolv-Prime-SC.html (http://www.rockrun.com/products/Evolv-Prime-SC.html)
I've got those so they may fit slightly different to the lace-ups. I'm size 8 in most Evolv shoes and these are no different. Excellent grit heel-hooking shoes.

not running, freerunning! although it also says
Designed for running and more specifically for running from the bulls at the annual run in Pamploma, Spain
Guess that's why they are a nice red colour, in case you get gored so the blood won't show.
-
Whats the sizing like on Evolv's Geshido?
I need a new pair of shoes to warm up in and these are going for £50 on R&R.
Ive read someone on this thread saying Bransby recommends sizing up one from your street shoe size, but a review on R&R says to size down one from street shoe size
Can anyone owing a pair please give me thier thougths please?

Just got a pair of these to use as an indoor shoe. I went half a size down and they are tight but not too bad. Street shoe size would be quite comfortable.

It seemed strange indeed, that Crouch didn't have a pair of these also.

Cheers rich

Hmm, this might explain why i gave up on evolv shoes. I could wear pontas 1.5 sizes down (as i do for anasazi, vapour) but tried on some geshidos and some others and could hardly get feet in. Thought they were just a weird shape! Oh well, scarpa = build quality, screw those americans.
-
I guess thats one reason the Evolv's are cheap!

Thanks for that Weak Dave...
I've got FAT hobbit feet and have never got on with La Sportivas, however I see CragX are offering the Pythons (in my size) for a few fuck alls (£66.50)... Are these similar in style to other La Sportivas i.e. narrow fit?
I get on well with 5.10 moccs and dragons but am always on the look out for cheap shoes...

Yes

Shark, are 5.10 definitely getting rid of the blanco or are you speculating? Gutted if they do!

I've been told the same by gaz in v12 beris. Shocking eh! Wonder if they plan to replace it with another 1mm thick soled super soft bendy shoe?
-
IIRC tom at banana fingers said this too.

I see on there cragx have got daescents for 40 nuggets. Bargain.

Money off at http://www.shopfiveten.com with the code 'jubulant'
-
Further to slackline's post, in the closeout section that code can get you a pair of anasazi velcros for £30 + postage from america. Ordering a few pairs would probably get you a pretty substantial saving.
Grey guide tennies for £20 + postage from the US!
-
Remember though that you may well get hit with import tax when shipping to non-US locations so factor that into the overall cost too.
Make sure you're aware what your US shoe size is too.
-
And be prepared for what are seen by them to be acceptable "tolerances" within sizing of 5.10 shoes.
-
Just got a pair of Verdes from Cotswold in Preston. I don't know if it's only one store, but they were reduced from a ridiculous £105 to a more sensible £75.

Go outdoors do price match minus 10% I got a pair of Muria vs for £85.58 I match them against Decathlon at £89.99. However as I was buying them in sunny Scuny, they added shipping in the price. If you were buying in Sheffield they wouldn't be able to add postage.

Moccs for £40 (http://www.rockrun.com/deals/climbing-shoes/five-ten-moccasym) Sadly they don't have my size but a good deal if you have big or little feet.
-
Ooo, what are the fit on these like? I need a comfy pair to climb indoors. I wear Anasazi velcros at 9.5UK which are a good size for me but I want a bit more space for indoors/comfort. Do they size up about the same as Velcros?
-
You need smaller than velcros as they're unlined leather and the elastic gradually relaxes as well- they stretch loads. If they're too big they'll certainly be comfortable but will be pretty useless for climbing in as they're very soft.
I'm a 10 in normal shoes, 9 in Anasazis and 8.5 in Moccs.
-
I find I'm about the same to 1/2 size down in moccs from velcro's - but I wear my velcros very tight...
-
If they're too big they'll certainly be comfortable but will be pretty useless for climbing in as they're very soft.
You haven't seen my original velcro dragons ;D so comfy they are like old man slippers, only retired due to a massive hole in the toe. :'(
-
I've been functioning* with size 47 in both old model Anus Velcros and old model Pinks, but could really go a bit smaller now that my swollen joints are settling a bit
Hopefully the 10.5 UK size (45 euro?) Moccs I just ordered will be about right
thanks for the heads-up Cheque
*not far off actual climbing

That's so weird Dave, I found the hiangles on boulders too but when I went to add the link on here they'd gone back up to full price, so I thought they were on a 'black Friday' deal or something. Shame they haven't got more sizes, been told to go a size down from dragons.
-
Yeah, I had the same issue. Went to the page a few times and the original price came up but then went on again later and got the Oasi at the reduced price ;D
I tried the HiAngle, Ross. Not too sure about them. The fit felt relaay good but it felt like there was a lot of rubber under the toe point. I know that sounds wierd but it is the best way I can describe it. I think they did feel very good though. Great fit and a good shape. Not too aggresive and the heel fit really well! Defo worth a look. The right fit for me was a full size down from Dragons.
-
How stiff are they? Suitable for grit or not? Thanks.
-
I think they would be fine on grit. They felt stiffer than dragons but I would say they were softer than the likes of miura vs or vapour vs.
-
I think every pair of stiff shoes I've ever owned have always felt horrible out of the box, like there's too much rubber under the toes (especially found this with muira vs) but that usually goes away as they wear in.
I'd hoping to try the hiangles on when I go back down south at Bristol. Torn between them and booster S which is good but has the shit vibram rubber on them (and they are v expensive).
-
Spotted this on Supertopo http://shopfiveten.com/C-43/Closeouts.aspx (http://shopfiveten.com/C-43/Closeouts.aspx)
Probably get raped in postage, but if a few 510 fanboys get together and place a big order it may come out ok... Anasazis at $59 (37 quid'ish) don't come around too often.
ETA: Actually, if somebody wants to put an order together i'll pitch in for a pair of trainers or 2
-
Looks like some great deals on there, unfortunately checkout only seems to offer US, Canada and Mexico as shipping options.
-
Thanks for the reply weakdave.
Lopez: I doubt that paying postage and being raped bear much comparison

Thanks Duncan,
Been on the look out for some shoes in a sale.
Popped down to ColdMountain Kit.
Managed to snag some Speedsters for £57.50 - not bad?
Seems like a great shop in the middle of London.
Not too far from Arch.
One of the staff said that they recently broken into and a lot of stock was stollen.
You couldn't make it up. As the sales staff/manager seemed really nice!
Service much better than other London Climbing shops!
Many thanks once again Duncan! :2thumbsup:

Best be on the lookout for overweight Germans then.

Anyone know what the sizing on these is like compared to Moccs?
-
I have the Evolvs in a 9.5 and the moccs in a 10. The evolvs are narrower and feel a bit more than half a size smaller imo. Whether that's down to the shoe's design or just random variety I've no idea.

I bought some shoes off them recently and they arrived in 4 days, very impressed. Although be warned that if you pay with paypal, it uses their own exchange rate +charges so you might pay more than it says on the tin.

Roughly how much are these charges?

I paid with PayPal without thinking really. I paid 1 Fuck All over the advertised price.

No experience with Solutions, but I'm 42 in Miuras/Testarossas and 41.5 in Pythons. (Normal shoe size 45)

I was referring to the links above Dave! Shame I don't need any shoes at the moment, could have saved some money.

Fuck me - I fancy a pair of them Oxygyms if only for the kerrrrazzeee colour combo. As we all know it's looking good that matters:

Similar line of reasoning for his snowboard, which was picked out on the basis of Graphics Most Likely To Make Mum Shriek.

You still could save some money by buying one (or more) of these cheap pairs now and keeping them in reserve for when you do need a pair, since the prices will only ever go up and such offers may not be around when you do need a pair. ::)

Noticed that Decathlon were offing Anasazi VCS for £65 whilst I was in there looking for Instinct Laces!

Noticed that Decathlon were offing Anasazi VCS for £65 whilst I was in there looking for Instinct Laces!
did they have any instincts?
-
I was told a while ago by Gaz Parry that Rock On in London had bought up a load of Instinct Laces. Don't bother looking on their website mind, nor try emailing them because "we don't have the internet in any of our shops because we'd rather serve customers and talk about climbing". Tried to phone them and never got through so gave up. Anyway, might be worth a try if you're desperate. I've now converted to the VS though I prefer the lace up as it's not quite as stiff...
-
No, they had a single pair of laces. Looked small though, small enough that I didn't even bother picking them up.
You can the laces easily enough from Europe but they're a bit expensive. I might just give my hiangles a bit more of a chance before deciding. I don't mind the stiffness of my hiangles, they're just a bit rounded at the front. Might not make a difference on limestone to be honest which is what I'll use them on.

Banana Fingers has 10% off all La Sportiva shoes at the moment

Anyone ordered from Bergzeit.co.uk? Realise, despite the address, that they are not UK based but the prices seem quite cheap.
-
Yup, everything was fine. I wouldn't recommend buying something where you're not 100% sure of the sizes, though. Returns to Germany are going to cost you a fair bit more.
-
Fair enough, looking for a new pair of shoes and whilst I will be staying with the same (solutions), this will only be my second pair so not 100% sure a shoe labelled the same will fit the same.
Good to know they are ok for buying other stuff from though :)
-

My local shop has pretty much this attitude except that they don't even have a website.
What they do have is - for example - Miuras for a normal price of about 100 Euros and quite often on sale for 80. (Despite which I only have three pairs on the shoe shelf at the moment. I deserve a medal for self restraint)
It seems to be working as business strategy - they've been going for several years and show no obvious signs of going bust yet. I will be sad if they ever do.

41.5 which is a 7.5 in UK sizes I think. If they don't fit I will probably flog them on here for the amount I paid as sending them back to france will be pricey.

Or pay for air-mail. Better still be patient, what difference would a few days to a week make? You can't be that desperate for them otherwise you'd have supported your local climbing shop rather than purchasing from abroad.
I expect there'll be a few pairs of these in bargain bins in a year or so's time...

I take "ideation" (WTF) doesn't involve trying climbing then? The whole single piece sole thing is a disaster, as anyone who has ever worn Boreal Spiders (aptly named for their ability to scuttle at high speed off even the best footholds) will tell you.

Please tell me you didn't sacrifice 8 pairs of Whites to one route?
-
They're not dead, just have shallow holes 1/2 inch behind the big toe in every pair, five in total.
I can climb on grit/trad in them and they're not peak lime-able anyway,. No worries; it could act as an impetus to resole a few. I might melt some rubber into them, is it possible to just melt an old shoe like that or am I going to get some lung disease not seen since the Victorian period?

I have a similar situation with Miura VSs. I have four pairs that are all in generally decent condition; however, they have all thinned / softened at the toe just enough to make certain routes at Malham tricky (anything involving jabbing the big toe on a tiny spike). Got fed up of continually having to break in new pairs and started to use the no-edge Futuras this year (only at Kilnsey in earnest though - they will make their Malham debut this weekend).

Do you know the thing I love about Scarpa shoes - you can buy online, in your size and it fits, every time. Instinct Ss just arrived from V12 and they fit sooo well out the box.

Me too - my only complaint is that the post office delivery was at 7:30 AM... ;)
Well done V12, Well done Scarpa (said with no hint of irony or sarcasm. You have just read that correctly)
Though - a local climbing shop (when I asked if they had any cheap instinct slippers in) spent 5 min moaning about how shit the Scarpa importers/suppliers in the UK were...

Eden Rock had Evolv Nexxco (sp?) for a bargain price of £50. Sizes from 7ish to 9.5 UK. I looked like one of Cinderella's portly siblings, desperately trying to squeeze my hoof into the 9.5's. Fail.

Loads of various size Dragons on eBay at the minute
-
OK, so not climbing shoes, but as UKB is heavily populated with Sheffielders, and everyone needs something to approach the crag... Accelerate in Attercliffe has a lot of £10 (ex demo, but basically in good nick) to £30 (unused, clearance) trail running shoes that they're getting rid of.
-
Any walshes?
-
Nope.
-
Darn! Ta.
-
Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy muira lace? Any deals going?
-
Not sure exactly, but I got the Miura VS recently from Go Outdoors for about £76 as they beat the decathlon price by 10%. Generally a good way to get Miuras pretty cheap - find a deal and then get go outdoors to beat it.
-
Rock and Run have loads of deals for cheap Red Chili shoes at the moment including the Octan and Stratos for £50.
http://www.rockrun.com/brands/red-chili
-
For good reason
-
Spent a while searching for a good price on Miura lace, this is the best I found:
http://www.rockrun.com/la-sportiva-miura
£85
Not that cheap but might save someone the hassle of looking through a load of sites.

Decathlon in Stockport had loads of pairs of sportiva shoes all sizes. Don't know what ones - yellow 3 Velcro straps and pointy toe.
Likely Miuras, noticed Sheffield had them back in stock. £85.
May be able to use them for the price match deal at Go Outdoors and get another 10% off that price.

I did this not long ago and it worked fine. Well worth it.

Just received an email with the latest rock n run deals including Womens miura vs for £69. Recall a thread recently (which I now can't find) where someone said they (or possibly a different model) were exactly the same fit just different colour. And possibly different rubber?. Is that correct, can anyone confirm or remember which thread it was.
Panzers.

Found it now I'm on PC rather than phone, it was Solutions but same last and fit on mens and ladies across the range apparently, just different colours.
So Miuras for £69 if you're between a 35 and 41.5. They also have Speedsters for £69
http://www.rockrun.com/deals/climbing-shoes
-
Aren't the sizes different?
Sherman's.

Exactly the same, fill your boots...

The men's version should have guns, pints and spanners printed all over it.
Or just the phrase "grab her by the pussy". #bantz
-
Sportivas site says WPD75 last and mens is PD75 (obv could be same, if Nai says so then cool)
Rubber is grip2 on womens and edge on mens this is an advantadge I'd say unless yr 80kg plus
-
Can't find anywhere that identifies the difference between the lasts. They're the same length and width and the women's version feels stiffer right now but then it is new Vs six months wear. As always with climbing shoes, time will tell, maybe they'll end up going soft a bit quicker, probably best not to stock up I guess.
-
Differences in M/F achilles insertion and height of calf muscle belly IIRC
-
Related to this, we bought a pair of the new woman's muira which are now a nice shade of blue. The heel on the new pair was a lot higher and they haven't been worn because too in comfortable. Quite annoying.

Nothing to see here...
Edit: I was mistaken.

Are Sportiva discontinuing the Speedster?
There seem to be limited stock or cheap offers all over. I quite fancy a pair for indoors, to replace a multiply-resoled pair of venoms, but if they're on the way out I might hold off and try something easier to replace.

what size are you after? i have brand new 7.5s i'm trying to offload.
-
I think I need euro 38, as I'm 38,5 in miura vs, but none of my local shops stock them!
If you're really 7,5 uk I do have a almost new pair of anasazi blancos (4 sport routes - names on request..) that I could do with selling but I'd have to post from France..
-
Climbing works have some really good deals on scarpas and solutions. Plenty of sizes as well
-
Anyone seen any good post xmas deals? Money's burning a hole in my pocket
-
Gooutdoors had Anasazi vcs for about 70 sheets and Miura lace for around 80.
-
Just looked again and they have put the Anasazi price back up and Miura is very limited sizes
-
Not exactly on topic, but were you all aware of the Go Outdoors price match guarantee? I wasn't.
Mrs OMM browbeat the manager in Exeter into matching a price 30% lower than their advertised and getting the store card 10% on the adjusted price too. Take your phone and google it!
She paid less than £100 for a pair of Salomon Gortex boots.
All posts either sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek or mildly mocking-in-a-friendly-way unless otherwise stated. I always forget to put those smiley things...
-
Guy on ukc today climbing to have got a pair of Dynafit TLT 6's for 99 quid at Decathlon. That if true is the shoe deal of all time if you're into that sort of thing*
* ski touring
-
Not climbing shoes, but TK Max in Leeds city centre has loads of Brookes running shoes in every half size up to Size 11 (plus a 12,13 and 14 too).
They're £35 a pair of which is about £85 cheaper than those I bought a few months ago. Well worth popping in if your in need of any.

I've had GoOutdoors aka CCCs pricematch me a few things in recent years and good amazing deals. Rab down bag, alpine axe, softshell, jetboil etc. Best thing was a Rab Vapour-rise that Outside had on sale for about 50% of RRP, which CCCs then pricematched me minus another 10%.

Rock Ruin have Dragoooooons for £77...

Decathlon have La Sportiva Miura VS for £85 which GoOutdoors have just beaten by 10% for me.
Worth checking if both stores have your size in stock as it could save a decent amount compared to their normal price.

Picked up a pair of la sportiva kids shoes for less money then the decathlon own brand ones

Yeah, that's a great approach shoe sale. Picked up a pair of Camp4s for not a lot at all but if you're a 5-6.5 your luck is in.

Do people go a half size larger than pinks?

Shark told me they’re half a size smaller than the old whites if that helps. That would be a full size smaller than pinks in my case.

Say what?! Whites smaller than pinks? That seems like madness.

The whites are smaller than pinks so you need to buy whites in a larger size than you would normally wear in pinks.

Ah, totally makes sense. I'm a bit frazzled today and thought you meant the opposite, hence the incredulity!
Thank you.

I take 7.5 in old whites, 7.5 in pinks (they're not as tight as the whites but the 7s are too tight) and 8 in new whites
Seem to be selling out now but Rock and Run still have some for sale

Wasn’t aware of these but just had a look at the blurb which says they were designed for edging in mind which is fucking bizarre as the Verdon lace ups were designed with a toe profile that made them good in pockets hence the name - Verdon - which also makes then not good at all at edging - especially outside edging in my experience.
This begs the question whether the VCR’s are still a pocket specialist shoe or not and if not why not give them a different name*
Another example of Adicrap?
*Vivian tm
-
Hmm, thanks Simon... I bought a pair anyway, curious to find out if they're any good
-

Did you try any (lace-ups)? I found the toe-profile (mainly the knuckle) to be less good in pockets than the Whites. The cynic in me thinks that a lot of 'athletes' were visiting the Verdon that year and it made a good name for a new shoe.
My Verdons are now very rounded but still very stiff.
-
Yes I bought a pair of Verdon lace ups for high tor as I found the Whites were noticeably poor when following Supersonic. The Verdons seemed to work much better on other pocketed routes there
-
Just a quick heads up for Llanberis Resoles.. Just had a couple of pairs of old red/white lace instincts and they've come back looking like new.
Torquil really does do an incredible job on them.
Had one pair done in XS Grip, my older comfy ones which I'll use on the grit, and the others done in XS edge for the lime. Will see how they go but if they're as good as his last ones, should see me for another couple of years. :)
-
Yeah Torquil does a great job - I've had a pair of blancos resoled twice by him, think they've been around ten years now as good all-round tradding shoes!
-

Bugger, apart from my OCDesque nature it wanting a like for like replacement, do I resole pinks is Edge or Grip?
-
I'm a similar build to you, I use Edge for limestone and general trad/mountain routes and Grip2 for grit and sandstone. So depends on what you mainly use your pinks for? Edge is my default though, and I use Scarpa VS for almost everything as they fit me so well.
-
If you want Stealth Cheshire Shoe Repairs have it and do a good job in my experience.
-
Feet First still have stealth in stock but when it’s gone it’s gone unless five ten / adicrap change their mind

Nope. Had them done in edge and they perform well.

Scarpa vapour lace are £88 in v12, so if you wanted to you could get them for £80 from GoOutdoors.
GoOutdoors also have 5.10 blancos at £70, in most sizes

I'm in desperate need of some new shoes before going to Font in a couple weeks. I've been keeping an eye out for any deals for months now but either haven't seen anything in the correct size or miss out on a couple of goodies posted here by a few hours.
I think La Sportiva Solutions are the one (have tried some on but not climbed in them) in either EU40 / 40.5. I tend to have slightly more narrow feet than some and am looking for a fairly aggressive shoe.
If anyone knew of any deals for anything like this I'd love to know about them. Or even some of the similar shoes in La Sportiva's range.
Failing that although it pains me to pay full price I'll pony up for some from my local wall.
Cheers all!
-
If it's the new Solutions, you'll struggle to find them 'cheap' as the new model has only recently come out. You might find stock of the old model going cheap, but might struggle to find them in your size.
The best I've seen the new Solutions for is £107.99 from urban rock (https://www.urbanrock.com/la-sportiva-solution-2018/ (https://www.urbanrock.com/la-sportiva-solution-2018/)) .They have the 40 in stock.
-
Sorry - yeah i meant the older model. Keep missing any significant reductions or them being out of stock for my size. If there was a great price on anything like the Futura, Skwarma, even maybe Otaki I'd probably give it a punt as I do a mixture of routes and bouldering and haven't really decided exactly which style shoe suits me best and you know... Horses for courses.
Thanks for the link at UrbanRock - I had seen that but for around £107 I think I can get for a very similar price at a local independent shop or my local wall so would give them the trade. Only posted in case after all my Googling I had missed any crazy offers out there.
-
The Miura VS are £90 at Decathlon.
-

Anyone have any beta on the sizings. Compared to Teams, Hi angles , dragons ?
-
I bought size 6.5 /eu40. They are very tight, only wearable with plastic bags. Think they are right and will stretch to be spot on though. Expect to end up with a very soft grit shoe.
I take 41 in all Instincts and same in old pink Anasazis and new Velcro ones (which I don’t generally wear as they are rubbish imo). Dunno about other 5:10 sizings.
Hope that helps.

Nice find!
Any idea on the fit of these? My feet are on the narrow/low profile end of things but would only wear these as a warm up / indoor pair. I recently bought some La Sportiva Solutions in EU 39.5... I know these tend to come up small but they are right on the limit of what my feet can fit in, plastic bag trick and one-two attempts before taking off for a rest. Plan to keep these as a 'try hard' pair and don't want to trash them indoors etc.
A few years ago I had a pair of Scarpa Force X in EU 41 - remember these being fairly snug but could wear for extended periods without issue so might go for 41. Ideally Peak forecast will be decent for this weekend and I could pop in and try them on but that doesn't look very likely :/
-
I take a 43.5 street shoe, in Scarpa Vapours and Instincts I'm a 41.5 for a performance fit. I've got a wide-ish foot, long second toe and a high instep, if that helps.

In all their shoes. Sadly I was too late and they were out of 41.5 instinct SR’s.... grr.
They also have the organic simple pads at £155. Which is as cheap as I’ve seen them anywhere in ages...
I'm assuming they are pukka, not a cheaper version made for Go?
Nope. I got a organic basic pad off them earlier this year...

Tiso's have lots of Scarpa's on sale, mainly smaller sizes plus the 5.10 Quantum lace in most sizes. Many approaching half price.

As good a place as any to ask, what is the longevity of the Velcro closure on Solutions like? I tried a pair on and it felt a bit flimsy, so looking for reports of issues.
-
I've never worn them but they're the only climbing shoes that I've picked up bits of from the base of crags when litterpicking. ;)
There's a thread here. (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,27895.msg547441.html#msg547441)
-
Not very long in my experience of owning just one pair. Wrapping a short piece of climbing tape lengthways around the section of lace that goes through the eyelet has sorted them out though.
If I get another pair I'll do this straight out of the box to avoid the inevitable wear before it happens.
-
a more elegant solution is to paint the webbing with this stuff https://www.canyonstore.eu/belgium/product/aquaglutene-varnish/
it's thick polyurethane paint used for canyoning wetsuits (thats why i own it ) also very good for protecting any textile from abrasion.

I've also got a mate who has fixed 4 pairs of mine that have snapped with a more durable (snazzy red) webbing!
-
On the other hand I have owned 10 pairs of futuras (same closure system) and never snapped the webbing, though one pair was looking worryingly worn before it was replaced. Looks like the new (2019) solutions have more substantial webbing anyway?
-
I tried a pair and they seem to have more volume than the older ones (which are on sale) and the upper seemed quite baggy by comparison. Could have just been me.

They are all handmade so I wouldn't be surprised if another pair felt completely different! I generally go to a place with a few solutions in each size to find the best fit.

Sadly in Aberdeen that's not an option.

Actually they cocked it all up. I tried on another pair, the older model, and felt a bit baggy, plus had the less secure looking closure. The only one they had on display was the newer model, with the better closure and a great fit. Took it to till and they tried to charge me full price. Seems they had put the wrong model on display, were a bit sniffy about it, but couldn't argue as it had the "Sale" tag still hanging off it. So got a pair of the newer model shoes for £93.

No more 5:10 Anasazi vcs!!
Does anyone know where I can get some uk9.5 of the velco vcs, I don't seem to be able to find a pair anywhere?
Have they been discontinued or is it temporary shortage?
So now on top of Brexit anxiety, I am faced with having to think about which replacement shoe to buy. These have been my go to shoe for so long, the sizing is just right and they will work on pretty much everything I want to climb. I basically have always had two pairs, the newest pair for bouldering and harder sport/trad, and an older pair for trad and multipitch sport, which worked great.
I am even struggling to find a pair of the of the newer pro's!
Any suggestions of potential outlets or replacement shoes, would be much appreciated.

Have the 5:10 vcs been discontinued?
I’m told that there’s a delay in imports of all 5.10 climbing shoes to Europe. None ‘til June apparently. That something like that can happen is surely a sign of how little Adidas care about our side of their business though. I’m certainly going to investigate the UP shoes when I need new ones. The shoes they make called “Lace” sound intriguingly like a Whites equivalent.

“Want to feel old? This is what reduced Moccasym prices look like now.”
-
:agree:
I bought some Moccasyms recently, split over toes on second outing, had to bin them.
Told John in Outside who said, yes, heard of that happening to quite a few now.
Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
-
You binned them rather than returning them?
-
Clearly not a Yorkshire man!

So are the adidas dragons any good? they seem to be going cheap. I really wish I'd bought some old ones before they discontinued. Unparallell are the next choice obv.
Just wondered if anyone had tried them?
-
I can't speak personally about the Adidas Dragons, but a friend who loved the Five Ten version (owned numerous pairs) got a pair and disliked the heel to the point of reselling them second hand and getting an Unparalleled alternative.
This could be a personal preference issue but I do see a lot of love for the Unparalleled offerings. Really need to try some on myself but I think my closest option is Outside in Hathersage? For me the Peak is a ~2hr trip so time there is always prioritised for actual climbing and not shoe shopping.
-
The Addidas heel must be bad then because the original Dragon heels are useless .

The Climbing Unit at Derby has some of the Unparalleled range, might be closer, depending where you're coming from.

Unparallel heels seem to be a return to the bad old days of the 5.10 heel space, at least on my pair.

I've just got a pair, took a punt on the rock and run offer.
Main point for ordering off web; they're a lot smaller. I had ten thousand pairs of old dragons in which i was a size 8.
I sent the new ones back for a size 9 and they are still very tight. Currently wearing round the house a bit to decide.
Overall the fit feels similar, including the heel though they do seem a bit stiffer at the front, perhaps because of the rubber on the top of the foot. (I have not climbed in them yet).
Will report back.

Turns out the seeming stiffness was actually maybe just them being tight and they've actually softened up at an alarming rate, certainly compared to my experience of ye old Dragons anyway. Almost like the rubber on the top foot is thinner so that they sort of collapse around the topside mid foot allowing toes to flex upward more than expected for a downturn aggressive shoe.
I have only used them indoors so they might end up being fine just something different.
What I am going to do though is buy some nouveau Dragons going by the name of Sirius.
Any info on sizing for unparallel? is it the same as ye old five ten?
-
Any info on sizing for unparallel? is it the same as ye old five ten?
The Anasazi types are a size bigger in my experience- I was 8.5 in Five Tens, I’m an 8 in Unparallels.
That probably won’t help you if they’ve followed Five Ten’s crackers Dragon size labelling though- my Dragons are a 10!
-
Hmm, you being up a size and a half in old velcro v dragon just tells me you don't wear them as tight as me. My old sizing which has been consistent throughout the years
Whites, Green, Pink, Velcro =
Uk7 Raven Tor, business
7.5 Grit, Font, casual
8 All day trad
Dragon = 8
V10 = 8
-
Yeah, my Dragons could well be a total anomaly.
I’ve had loads of pairs of Anasazis in Velcro and lace up though and was always an 8.5 so you can extrapolate from that fairly reliably.
-
I've had a few responses privately from lurkers and its seems the Sirius come up 'slightly' tighter than dragons.
Mine were pretty tight already so i might go for 8.5 in Sirius.
-

Are they? Not the sportivas and scarpas from what I can see?
Yeah - they're cheapish - but not as cheap as I've seen them (I'm a regular Scarpa market watcher :D)
-
Most of the shoes are still in the £95 - £105 range, they say the RRP for them is about £130, but the prices listed are fairly typical.
-
Boosters for £107.90 is saving nearly £40 off RRP, which is a decent saving.
-
I've never seen La Sportiva Solutions for £90. They are always over £100 brand new (normally £120ish)
-
Where have you seen solutions for £90?
-
Rock and run have had a couple of 20% discount codes recently. I think with these solutions woukd have worked out about £90. I saw the codes through my Facebook feed.
-
https://www.bananafingers.co.uk/climbing-shoes/la-sportiva/solution
£90.73 for solutions
-
That’s so weird, when I click through on that it’s showing £108, have you got a discount code in or something?
-
Yeah same :-\
-
108 for me!
-
Looks like it could be different prices or discounts for different geographical areas. If I check the page from my home network it comes out as £108 (a 25% discount on £145 rrp) but if I check from the work VPN it comes out as $108 or a 35% discount. 108 USD ~= 88 GBP.
-
I don't know how that happened. Sorry guys. I went to pay and they suddenly included the VAT of 20%. So it ended up being £108. Confusing.

Friend has these and rated them very highly, although he broke the strap on them (typical Solution) in about four weeks, but I think he was pulling them too tight as I've never had an issue with the dyneema style closure La Sportiva use.
-
I've had the new design solutions for a while, and never had an issue with the straps, although i've been a bit cautious due to issues I've heard of from others. Might give them a go, thanks.

3 sessions in with the new solution comps and they are the best yet.
Been using the solutions for years and always had an issue with the straps( it’s just something you have to live with) even though they have clearly been trying to sort it out in the latest shoes.
Greatest shoe on the market and has been for years, despite it’s obvious downfalls.
-
Cheers scrag, away to get some to try.
PS If anyone spots cheap really small shoes please post on here. Son has now outgrown the kids decathlon ones, and is now wearing his mum's old ones, which are a tad big. Size 1-2ish.
-
The link I posted above has Maverinks in 33, 34 and 34.5, which Google tells me works out as 1 to 2 in UK adult sizes: https://www.urbanrock.com/la-sportiva-maverink/
And they were originally designed and marketed as being for kids/adolescents -- you just had a bunch of small-footed adults like me discovering that they're gold.
-
Also Bananafingers has a bunch of kids' climbing shoes at not-bad prices, e.g.:
https://www.bananafingers.co.uk/climbing-shoes/boreal/ninja-junior-last-seasons (£29.99!)
https://www.bananafingers.co.uk/climbing-shoes/la-sportiva/stickit-0

Varying degrees of technicality, so you've got options!
-
Thanks, I can just about stomach the £30 but will look out for more under the £40 mark.
He's in an old pair of 5.10 Rogues right now that I got for about £30, but little sister has now got those, as she's outgrown the kid's decathlon ones we had.
-
Bergzeit's got a decent handful between £33 and £38 in the right sizes.
(Got bored while caffeinating and had a look.)
-
The Adidas shop next door to Stockport Awesome walls has some Hiangles and Dragons for £29.99, not a lot of sizes but worth a look if you are popping by....
-
Gooutdoors has reduced the prices on rock shoes a bit - Chimera 94, Instinct slipper 80 and others. They are currently open to walk in as climbing equipment has now been classed as an 'essential service'. *
*Although it may be because they have cycling stores inside their shops.

Anyone know about the Regulus sizing? I’m a 10.5 in the new white Hiangle, 10s in the purple 2016 version (but maybe 10.5 in the synthetic version that preceded the whites). I’m a 9.5 in Scarpas.
Or something from the UP range that’s softer than an Instinct VSR?
Thanks

Nice. One. Cofe. Used to be an 8 in pre Adidas VCs and they had no 8’s left - so happier pulling the trigger on some 7.5’s 👍
Btw - for Sirius Lace sizing (I got a pair for Xmas) - I went for my street size (9) and they are fine - but possibly a tiny bit too large. I mean they feel great, but I’d have gone for half a size smaller if I got them again - and not have to think about lacing them up so tight.

Worth noting in case anyone has never tried them on that the Furia was much narrower in the toe box than an Instinct VS. The length is the same but the last and the fit are not.
Instinct VS fits me perfectly. I can just about tolerate the pain of wearing the same size Furia long enough to complete a problem because of how much they crush my toes in to each other. If you have narrower feet, sticking to the same size should do you fine.
Also, the heel is OK but is not Instinct VS levels of good. I've never found a heelhook where I preferred the heel on the Furia over the VS. Same for toe hooking
-
I would agree that the new Furia S is narrower but the old Furia feels the same in the toebox as the Instincts to me. They're also much softer so break in a lot more. Agree about the heel though. Just sent my pair off to Llanberis for a resole. They're my go to plastic hopping shoe...I am assuming at some point I will have need of such a thing again.
-
I'd agree with that Rob.
Personally, I preferred the original Furia as they are a little stiffer than the Furia S (well, they feel that way to me) and last longer, for no real loss in sensitivity.
-

I found a similar thing with Dragos, and Chimeras, compared to Instincts. Instincts fit my feet perfectly and the other two are too narrow and no matter how much I downsize the heels have so much bag. Which sucks as I'd love a good pair of soft shoes.
-

Instinct VS fits me perfectly. I can just about tolerate the pain of wearing the same size Furia long enough to complete a problem because of how much they crush my toes in to each other. If you have narrower feet, sticking to the same size should do you fine.
Also, the heel is OK but is not Instinct VS levels of good. I've never found a heelhook where I preferred the heel on the Furia over the VS. Same for toe hooking
I found a similar thing with Dragos, and Chimeras, compared to Instincts. Instincts fit my feet perfectly and the other two are too narrow and no matter how much I downsize the heels have so much bag. Which sucks as I'd love a good pair of soft shoes.
VS-R?
The Instinct VS, VS-R and laceup are the only shoes that share the VS last. All of the others are narrower in the toe.
Instinct slipper is a unique last which is quite a bit narrower than the rest of the Instinct range.
The original Furia, Furia S, Furia Air, Drago, Chimera, Boostic and Booster are all the same FZ last (although they stretch differently etc).
Mago has its own last which is quite narrow but I can make them fit my very wide feet due to the laces.
Stix is another unique last which is wider than some of them but very asymmetric. They fit me better than the instinct slipper but nowhere sells them anymore.
-
Both actually - but the Newer one with the blue bit in the heel is closest to the Velcro instinct imho. The heel isn’t amazing but alright...
Btw - for those who love the VS - try the instinct lace up. Very similar but lighter and for me even better fitting. Absolutely love them.
For an even softer shoe try the booster. Bit narrower than the instinct but very little support. I was surprised - as they look like overhanging small edge weapons, but are actually really good on smeary stuff.

I've got a lot of time for the Boosters on smeary stuff too. Very floppy midsole so you can get a lot of rubber on the rock.
Will be interesting to try out the new Boostics, though the £150 price tag is a bit :'(

Hi all - any advice on how the sizing of either the Womens Five Ten Anasazi Lv Pro or Mens Five Ten Dragon - both mentioned above fit. I've never had the opportunity to try on any Five Ten/Adidas shoes.
For reference I tend on the slim side of foot, with not much broadening towards toes. My current shoes are La Sportiva Solutions (not the brand new softer heel, the previous moulded solid heel version) in 39.5 - these are right on the edge in terms of being very tight (plastic bag trick to get the shoe on due to very narrow elasticated opening etc) but at the same time a really good fit. Also I own a pair of Scarpa Womens Lace Up Vapour (the lace up is essential, usually Scarpa seem a little wide but I can really crank the laces!) size 41. These are way less technical but they work well for warm ups, endurance stuff, anything not absolute limit bouldering.
Thanks!

Your feet may vary, but I own Solutions and Scarpa Instinct (VSW and VSR) and have had Vapour in the past. All fit me well, I love the heel fit on them all. I hated Anasazi (the old, brown ones) for fit on the heel. Even with my toes smushed up to the front it felt like a pair of crocs at the back.

There is a comparative sizing guide here: https://rockrun.com/blogs/the-flash-rock-run-blog/rock-climbing-shoe-sizing-guide
Couldn’t resist getting both the Dragons and LV Pros at this price. I got size 9 in both (street shoe size 10) and they arrived this morning.
Five Tens are slim fit anyway so should suit you. I’ve really narrow feet.
The LV were a brilliant all comfortable round snug fit but no downturned toe. Dragons were crippling but I find that with most aggressively downturned shoes - probably I’m flat footed.
-
Thanks both for the replies. That comparative sizing guide is very useful!

Not as cheap as above but a few decent deals:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/climbing_clearance/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=
In particular I've just taken a delivery of a pair of no longer available Miura xx which are great if you fit the Miura but want something that retains its stiffness and downturn (a few larger and smaller sizes left now).
-
What’s the score with ordering from discounters in Europe now? Do you have to somehow pay VAT and duty?
-
If the total order (including delivery) is less than £135 there’s no VAT or duty. If it’s over you’ll have to pay these on top of the sales price.

To clarify, you do actually pay VAT on stuff under £135 but in theory the shop you purchased should have charged you VAT at the checkout (and then paid the VAT on to the uk government). I imagine it's a bit of pot luck whether this actually happens properly at the moment, especially if you're using smaller retailers. Likewise customs duties seem a bit of pot luck as well, sometimes things sail through with no issues and other times you'll get stung.
If you fancy a little light bed time reading https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty

Yep, should have said ‘import VAT and duty’ which will be additional charges to those buying goods over the £135 threshold, that they may not be expecting.

Thanks both

Re sizing of dragon velcro I got the same size as my hi angles and they are pretty similar but slightly narrower. I have wide ish feet so they were pretty uncomfortable at first but they have bagged out ok in a session

I’m a big fan of the five ten Anasazi Velcro of ten years ago. I hear mixed reports about this adidas version (the last pre NAID?). How does it differ in fit and rubber?
-
Ditto. All I know is they were not well received. The pros were extremely stiff; the NIADs are very soft. My guess is they were closer to the NIADs.
-
I’ve heard that the newer Anasazi Velcro’s are a bad fit round the toes - allegedly a build error at the factory
-
I’ve heard that the newer Anasazi Velcro’s are a bad fit round the toes - allegedly a build error at the factory
I tried some at the weekend. Width and general fit seemed OK but there was massive amounts of excess material over the top of my toes. I have almost always worn anasazis of some description but these were rubbish unfortunately.
-
I’ve heard that the newer Anasazi Velcro’s are a bad fit round the toes - allegedly a build error at the factory
Heard this too... However I had a pair last year and they were fine fit-wise (I did have to try 2 pairs of the same size to get a good fit tho...)... The big issue I had was with the build quality, they pretty much fell apart in 3 months... Conversely, I bought a secondhand USA pair off Fleabay over 6 months ago and apart from the stench they're still in great nick!
-
Thanks everyone. I'll stick with my extensive supply of softened-up Blancos (not far from the VCRs in feel).
-
So what's the closest thing to an Anasazi that Unparallel do? The UP Rise VCS?
Anyone able to say how they compare?
-
Just spotted m and m direct have cheap dragon Velcro’s back in stock in loads of sizes and Anasazi and Anasazi pro.
Such a good price!
-
So what's the closest thing to an Anasazi that Unparallel do? The UP Rise VCS?

I have a pair of these. They are superb. The fit is similar (narrow - with a fairly flat sole) and I think they are a little stiffer (though I’ve not had them long enough and I remember the old Velcro’s used to take an age to soften.
However their heel is excellent (the old one was shite) and the build quality is just top notch. To use a 1980’s car building metaphor, the new ones feel like a BMW and the old ones felt like they were knocked together on a Friday afternoon at a Leyland factory.
I like them a lot.
-
Thanks TT, sounds good. Once I get over the idea of paying full price for a pair of climbing shoes I'll probably plump for a pair of these.
Did you go for the same size as the USA made anasazi?
-

I think so… just checked and I got some 7.5’s. I’m 9 on street shoes and a 41.5 in scarpa instinct(s) which is 7.5 too I think.
They are possibly half a size too big - but unlike the original US anasazis don’t bag out (well haven’t so far) so they’re fine at the moment.
Strangely at the moment they are my go to edging shoe - and if I need an especially good heel. They have the harder unparallel rubber and it’s barely worn…
They’re one of those I’d recommend trying first if you can etc…
The heel band is quite broad (2.5 cm or so) and quite stiff - but works really well.
-
I agree with TomTom- UPs are not only a closer equivalent for the old US-made Anasazis (the rubber is the same and the shape of the toes is the same) than current 5.10s, they’re actually better. I have the blue lace-ups, grey velcros and yellow moccs now.
Sizing-wise Unparallels are about a 1/4 of a UK size bigger- if you get the same size you were in US-made Anasazis they’ll be slightly bigger, if you get the size below they’ll be slightly smaller.
The big difference is that while the 5.10s relied only on the combination of sole hardness and heel tension to get their stiffness, the UPs have a stiffening element to the top of the shoes (rubber on the velcros and moccs, a lacing setup with more layers of fabric on the lace-ups) which means that the heels are more comfortable and better fitting. It also means that as well as feeling a bit stiffer to begin with, the softening-up process is a longer and more gradual affair than the overnight “floomf” of the classic Anasazis. The rands also seem to be glued on with sterner stuff which adds to this stiffness retention.
This is most apparent on the Up-Moccs which are absolutely fucking brilliant and could be a good choice for people who liked the Anasazi velcros because they went soft or those who don’t like the higher cut of the Velcro UPs. I gave up on the Five Ten moccs as they went unusably soft way before the rubber wore out but the UP equivalent, while still not what you’d call edging machines, don’t.
-
I'm thinking about getting a pair of the 5.10 velcro's to use as a wall shoe (hence saving my quality Scarpa's for the crag). I'm an EU 38.5/39 in Scarpa, what size 5.10 would I need?
-
My saved eBay search came up with these. (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224500044421)
Not something I need but could be a good deal for someone. I think Vims are remakes of the old Five Ten V10s?
-
yes I've tried some recently, they're pretty much exactly the old V10 and I was the same size as before as well.
For reference I'm also the same size in Dragons / Sirius and Team / Regulus if thats what they're called. Regulas might be the Hi-Angle? no matter, Im the same size in all of them so you might be too.

Not sure how it compares to the old dragon as I never got on with them, but it's a decent heel for a slipper (i.e. don't expect much, can get away with it in a pinch.).
-

Kind of the same, I always thought they are the same last or something, however they make shoes.
With the V10s though on a few occasions I had to use either a velcro/ dragon/ anything that locked because with the elastic shoes, the heel will just come off.
-
Thanks both, good to know, I'll swerve them because heel fitting is always an issue for me. Shame because they look great otherwise!

I've been searching for cheap sportiva theories for ages. Mine are almost 2 years old and nearly dead. They're supposed to be indoor comp shoes, which I do precisely none of, but they have become my first choice for grit bouldering unless there's really small positive footholds.
Too small for me but here's a cheap size 6 pair with a minor defect:

Cheers! Any recent gen on sizing of the new dragons vs old? I was a 7 in the previous version and they fit like a glove.
Have tried on a pair of new 7s and they were too tight but unsure whether to go up a half or whole size. Searches of old comments/reviews show up mixed opinions so keen to hear from anyone else!
I'm about a 7.5 street size, but with pretty narrow heels.
-
They are owned by Adidas so if you are anywhere near an Adidas outlet they’ll be just sat on the shelves, Dragons next to random trainers.
-
So Niad Moccs have dropped below £60 on various sites which make them tempting. I tried a on a pair of 8.5 at the wall the other day but couldn't get them on. Reckon I could just about get them on at home with no pressure and a couple of plastic bags. I appreciate that moccs are a niche shoe these days but has anyone any knowledge on whether they bag as much as the old moccs?
-
I haven’t tried them but looking at the construction I don’t think they’ll stretch as much because of the rubber toe covering.
-

I was tempted myself and got a pair. If you get the sizing right (completely different from the old ones) then I'm thinking it's worth a punt for general crag / tradding shoes.
The upper is leather and so will probably bag out half a size or so. I'd err on the tighter side in view of this.
If it were synthetic (ie the new anasazi) it'd stay the same size.
-
The NIAD velcros are the softest, stretchiest shoes I've ever owned, despite the rubber toe, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for the moccs. Didn;t buy them super tight but they gained at least a half size in the first half hour, and that was just the beginning. I now have to wear socks. Recommended only if you value comfort over performance.

rand of the brave.

I mean they wouldn't be my choice but let's not forget Lynn freed the Nose in a day in Bambas ffs.

Thanks.
I got a pair of the old new Moccs in an 8 (which is what I always got the old old Moccs in) which I thought was a big mistake when I first tried to get them on but they were pretty quickly perfect. I now can't find them in an 8 so tempted to get a pair of Niad Moccs in an 8.5 and see how I go!
-

Did she? I’ve always presumed so due to the photograph…. Maybe the shot was taken on a different day and she was tasked with pushing the new shoe. Or maybe she set a new standard in a truly terrible shoe. It’d be cool to know if she really did! She’s good but was she that good…..
I’m slightly disgusted with my cynical self for even questioning this. Proves the power of a photograph either way!
-
Donning something different ‘just for the camera’ would have been quite out of character for her. She’s a pretty straight up kind of person.

Less flippantly, for long routes esp including aid climbing, most people prefer a stiff boot so you get a level of support. And laces provide much more scope to crank up a big boot than two velcro straps, esp in the toes where you most want to adjust volume. Plus etriers are agony in soft boots whether you're 1 pitch in or 20. So no, NIADs are not likely to be ideal for NIADing.
-
So not only have they ruined their most loved shoe model, they have also given it a totally inappropriate name. Top work Adidas!

This.
However they are great for training for a NIAD: a broad forefoot and unlined suede uppers means your toes will be happy (and red) after 100s of metres on an autobelay or easy routes.

mandmdirect have quite a lot of 5:10/adidas models going very cheap. Heard terrible things about these but I took a punt and got the anasazi velcros and mocs (not-niad ones) from here, seem good and much the same as 'old' five tens. I got a pair of the mocs and the velcros from there and although the mocs are too big (will be used for all day multipitch stuff), I bought the right size velcros and they're perfect, although a whole size up from the old ones I used to get.
The rubber and general fit seems just as good though, although the straps and the upper seem more cheaply made.
Can't go wrong for 50 notes for a general cragging shoe, but won't replace the Miuras for bouldering...

La Sportiva Katakis on offer at Outside at the moment: https://www.outside.co.uk/la-sportiva-kataki-climbing-shoe.html (https://www.outside.co.uk/la-sportiva-kataki-climbing-shoe.html)
-
Anyone used these and can review? I was considering a pair but not tried on yet. Looking for something a little stiff but still a bit aggressive for sport - low 7s to low 8s.
Have medium to narrow feet.
I wear Futuras indoors and bouldering.
Velcro Muiras trad and easier sport
Currently Tenaya Lati (the red ones) for harder sport.
I don't generally get on with Scarpa (too wide) or unparallel (heel)
-
I've got a pair of Katakis - in the same size as my usual Miura VS. They feel a little less aggressive and flatter than Miuras but a touch stiffer (like the offspring of a Miura and an Anasazi). They are now really comfortable while still feeling precise, but when I first got them, their stiffness at the back aggravated my achilles. The heel is also that weird bulbous "S Heel" (same as Solutions), which I personally find insensitive, but that's never really been an issue when sport climbing.
-
Cheers Moose, I'm not a fan of the solution heel either but for this use I could live with it. More concerned that they feel less aggressive than the Muiras. Thought it might be worth a pint at such a bargain price but not sure now. Hmmm
-
Haven’t had a pair of Kataki’s but use Otakis for all my route climbing. (Up to 8a+ sport and E6 trad) also always get them resoled, in edge the first time use them for trad/sport warmups then second and 3rd times in grip and have climbed 7B+ in them. If they didn’t get too soft for hard trad and sport I’d keep getti mg edge put on them.
Been ages since I owned a pair of Miura VS but have never looked back. Not sure how the Katakis differ beyond being lace ups. I also bought some Katana’s last year and am back on to the Otakis, despite having a brand new pair of Katanas still in my cupboard. Undecided on whether I would use them on something specific or not…
Not sure if that was helpful, I can’t remember how aggressive the miura vs were but I like how my Otakis can stand on really small edges but can deal with smeary edges and smears too. They seem to be a bit of a punter shoe but I think they are really good for hard climbing (in the keen amateur sense)
-
Katakis are my default shoe unless there is a need for something specialist. I’ve got narrow feet too. Can wear them all day long. They seem to have found a sweet spot between being supportive and sensitive and resole really well at Llanberis Resoles. They are being discontinued so delighted to bag a couple of pairs at this price.
-
What is it with you and shoes that get discontinued Shark?!?!
Please don’t start buying Otakis I don’t want to have to find a new shoe! :P

Have medium to narrow feet.
I wear Futuras indoors and bouldering.
Velcro Muiras trad and easier sport
Currently Tenaya Lati (the red ones) for harder sport.
I don't generally get on with Scarpa (too wide) or unparallel (heel)
Katakis are based on the Skwama last so relatively wide at the front with a narrower heel. The heel is not the same as the Solution heel but rather that of the Skwama; slightly softer and more conforming. It tends to work well for people with flat/low volume heels. They're better on an edge than Skwamas and are effectively a combination of the Katana lace and Skwama. In terms of performance you can expect them to be good on different things depending on how you size them - around two sizes down will give a more conforming shoe which will perfom well on sandstone/grit or thin cracks/multis, 2.5 sizes down will be about right for edging on lime/granite/edgy trad. It's a good shoe.
In general when looking at Scarpa it's a misnomer to assume they're all wide. It's true Instincts and their ilk are wide, but options like Vapor Lace and Drago LV would be good choices for a narrow fit. You can view their shoe fit sizing easily here (https://world.scarpa.com/page/climbing-collection-structure).
Hope this helps :)

Seems weird to name and describe a shoe as a combo of Katana and Otaki, if its based on the last of the Skwamas!
That Scarpa chart is really nice, is there anything similar for Sportiva floating around somewhere? specifically it'd be really handy to have them grouped by last.

Good chart, cheers! the Dragos are miles too soft to be of interest, and the vapor lace just feel very flat when I've tried them. From that chart something like the Boostics should be good, but I've tried them on and didn't like the fit, also felt wide tbh. I've thought before the old magos might have been the shoe, anyone know how the new ones differ?

It's how the LaSpo rep described them when they were introduced and I'd agree but they're definitely a bit narrower than Skwamas, likely due to shaping and stiffness.

It's here (https://www.lasportiva.com/en/climbing-shoes-technical-information).

They're definitely a bit narrower. Sounds more like you have a medium volume foot though considering you're doing well with Miura VS so be cautious with going too narrow.
-
Cheers! Bit suspicious of the Miura VS's place on that chart though, I'll take some convincing its wider than the Skwama or Otaki

VS is very wide, it's the classic go-to for a stiff edging shoe that might work for people with hallux. It depends on the specific shape and sensitivity of the hallux because of the way the shoe exerts pressure though. Skwama might 'feel' wider because it's softer which means it gives more when the foot presses against it.
-
I have both Skwama and Ladies Miura VS in the same size and like Duma would take some convincing that the VS' are wider. The Skwama's are like boats compared to the VS. Not just on feel but on visuals too out of the box.
More broadly Duma your feet sound quite similar to mine. Might be worth trying a pair of the womens Miura VS' on; I wore the mens lace Miuras for years, then the womens lace Miuras, and have now finally settled on the velcro womens Miuras. As long as they make them I won't need to try another shoe. I tried Kataki's a few years ago and found them too wide for me.
-
Thanks for all the comments, bit of a moot point as outside have now sold out of size 40 (I blame shark), but am now planning a visit to bananafingers to try out a bunch of the suggestions from here. SM06, have you tried the men's Muira VS? Apart from volume and/or width, often the women's models aren't as stiff (fair enough given average weights) which would put me off. My GF wears women's Muira VSs, but she's size 4 so not much use to me!
-
No guilty. 41 for me.
-
I never have; the women's lace version were such a revelation for me that I climbed in them for a few years and only moved to the VS version when I realised that unlike the laces, they had the P3 power platform which would keep them stiffer for longer. I also avoided velcro shoes for years out of a (possibly misguided) belief that my narrow feet were better suited to lace up shoes (previously I'd had blancos).
The women's shoes do have 3.5mm rubber rather than 4mm rubber which might mean less stiff. It doesn't seem any different to men's miuras to me, but I am pretty light at 60kg. I think the lower volume was the key for me, I only really realised how precise heel hooks could be when I started wearing the womens version! (here endeth the love letter!)

Is this too good to be true? 80% off La Sportiva's at https://dusktrend.shop/ (https://dusktrend.shop/). Loads of models and loads of sizes. Solutions for £21, TC Pros for £23 etc. + £8 postage!!

Looks like a scam to me:
- Appears to be a dodgy clone of la sportiva's real site
- Handful of very fake sounding reviews
- Prices seem way to good
-
The bit on the top line where it says “ more link” sort of suggests it’s bogus.
-
I've just bought 5 pairs with my credit card. Nothing to lose.
-
I'm going to be really annoyed if this is legit and I haven't cashed in

Well, my work has blocked it and combined with the prices......

I'll probably be making a call to American Express next week, but you've got to be in it to win it ;D
-
None of the links to socials go to La Sportiva and they’re selling Olympus Mons Cube for £39.34 (reduced from £196.69). Boots which actually retail for £935.
-
That's not even half-plausibly genuine.
Why would anyone knowingly want to facilitate CC fraud?
First for me. Never felt sorry for AmEx before in my life!

Please don't tell me you took my posts as serious!?
As you say, no one could actually think that it was genuine!

I've been noticing a few ads on facebook for companies making similar claims about La Sportiva deals. They are all extremely sketchy looking, and I reported one and Facebook has taken it down for going against community standards. Given I've reported other spam in the past and they do fuck all about it, I'd say this was a pretty clear scam.
Be careful out there!

I get a fair few ads on Facebook for top end British shoe makers at give away prices. The E address is always nothing like the company they are pretending to be. They claim to be an outlet shop and these companies don’t have one. I have reported them but and they disappear but they continue appear so I don’t really think Facebook gives a shit.
-
Ha, I saw that on facebook and was going to get some of the jeans. Came out of the page, then couldn't find it again on facebook so assumed they'd taken it down. Trying to find it by google again and couldn't find it. Total Scam.
If it sounds too good to be true, it generally isn't.
-
Another example (I think) of too-good-to-be-true prices at lasportivaworld.com - ad came up on social media for me and the site is pretty convincingly set up, I'll be surprised if they don't make some decent dollar out of it. Quick Google shows the domain was registered 5 days ago in the Netherlands. I'm still not 100% convinced I'm right!
-
That’s an amazingly authentic looking site PeteHukb!
What was it about the 80% discount that made you suspicious? :-\
-
Here is a legit good deal:
https://rockrun.com/collections/scarpa-quantic-climbing-shoes/products/scarpa-quantic-womens?variant=42852529701045
£40 Scarpa Quantic.
Not the most aggressive/technical shoe but I bought a pair to do some mileage / warm ups etc it and am initially pleasantly surprised with them.
-
There's so much volume in that shoe. Really tricky to have some costumers who actually fit the shoe.
-
Instinct laces (size eu36 only) £78 https://bananafingers.co.uk/scarpa-instinct-lace
-
I was all set to get another pair as they're such good workhorses and then saw that for every size except EU 36 it says "+£37.93", bringing the price up to 116 - impressively shoddy.
-
Yeah I was set to order another pair until I saw that... Wonder whats so undesirable about eu36
-
Black Diamond have a decent sale on. Lots 40% off. No idea about what their shoes are like but worth checking out for the deals in sacs, harnesses, ropes, portaledge! etc

Good price for Notion shorts, I have 2 pairs and practically live in them.

don't buy the approach shoes if you actually intend to use them for approaching

Interesting! As I’m in the market for a new pair of shorts - are they quit a relaxed fit?
I’m a bit of a trad man so have larger legs and bum than your average sport climbing upside down triangle person
-
Yes, relaxed comfy fit, your build description fits mine (runner legs and bum and dad belly!).I'm a 38 / 40" waist and was surprised that this is their Large, I am normally an XL, then remembered it's US size :).
-
Nice one… might treat myself

Don't buy the portaledge unless someone else is hauling it!
bananafingers/epictv have Sportiva Testarossa 2s (https://bananafingers.co.uk/la-sportiva-testarossa) at 40% off in many useful sizes.
I like the Testarossa 1s but have not tried the 2s. Some people suggest going down a half size in the 2s, others suggest no change. Anyone worn both?

Can't speak to differences between them, but I sized the 2s as I would for other LaSpo (Solution, Skwama) and found that despite a longer than usual break-in period, they fit fine.

Some people might have already seen this as it's posted on their socials etc. £70 Evolv Zenist. Lots of sizes available:
https://bananafingers.co.uk/evolv-zenist
https://bananafingers.co.uk/evolv-zenist-women-s
Does anyone know if there is any difference in fit at all between the mens + womens? The technical spec is exactly the same in terms of rubber and midsole thickness. So it's just a colour preference?
EDIT: On the Evolv website the term 'low volume' is used for the womens, without going into too many specifics.
-
Alpine Trek currently have decently sized Moccs / Niads (https://www.alpinetrek.co.uk/five-ten-niad-moccasym-climbing-shoes/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2023-08_trans_versandbestaetigung_UK&log=intern&wt_mc=uk.email.transaktion.dispatchconf&sc_src=email_4024059&sc_lid=252125548&sc_uid=cz2MFyGHor&sc_llid=14226&sc_eh=e78ab262572bc2961&emst=cz2MFyGHor_14226_4024059_3) for £55!!
-
Thanks for posting about the evolv zenist. Only just arrived but look really good for £70. Worth saying that they are not kidding about going above your street shoe size. They size tiny!

Yeah anyone who loves the no edge shoes should get involved at rock and run or bf. Cheap atm as they get a redesign next year.
-
Aghast at the price of Miuras currently; anyone any advice on where to keep an eye out? Not urgent yet but I resent paying £130 although I know this is increasingly standard. Alpinetrek has them at 160!
-
Our local Decathlon was selling some off, was wondering if they are discontinuing keeping them in their range due to increasing costs. Sadly didn't have my hoof size, but might be worth checking locally?

https://rockrun.com/collections/la-sportiva-climbing-shoe-clearance/products/la-sportiva-genius?variant=42255417934005
Anyone know what the sizing on the Geniuses and the Futuras is like relative to Miuras?
-
In the unlikely event he doesn't spot this, drop Duma a DM as he wears both.
-
I do and I've spotted it!
Same sizing for me, though since I use them for different things I wear 40 in futuras and 41 in Miura VS
-
Thanks, appreciated!
-
The genius is built on one of Sportiva's widest lasts. I find no edge to be like cheating on some footholds (very rarely) but worse on most footholds.
-
I can go slightly smaller in Geniuses than Miura laces, probably because I have a wide fore-foot. The Genius, and Testarossa which uses the same last, are the only Sportiva shoes that fit me properly. I can climb in a Miura lace but they are not ideal and I find the Miura velcro unwearable.

What size are you? Got some box fresh lace ups in size 38 if you're interested? Never worn and still got the tag on.
-
Tend to wear velcros these days; I've just taken a punt on a cheap pair of 38s which I'm hoping will fit; am normally a 38.5. Cheers for the offer though!
-

Really? I thought genius were basically lace up futuras, and futuras def aren't one of their wider shoes.

The Futura is built on the Solution last, which i'd call medium width. The Genius is wider and more asymmetric and shares a last with the Testarossa and Theory.
