Title: Western grit conditions
Post by: BenF on January 22, 2010, 08:16:32 am
Anyone been out anywhere on the western side of the Peak lately?  How much snow is there?  I'm basically wondering about the usual suspects...  Roaches, Newstones, Baldstones and particularly Ramshaw.  In fact that's pretty much everywhere covered.

Thanks.

Thanks, that was kinda what I'd summised from the various webcams.  The forecast for dry but near windless, cloudy murk doesn't really arouse much excitement either.

Orme it is then.

Just in case anyone is still interested in this given the current bad run of weather, we made an optimistic trip to the Roaches area today. On the upside the all the roads were fine, on the downside all but the most exposed pieces of rock seemed to be damp and refusing to dry. We ended up at Baldstones after finding everything at the Roaches wet and managed to do one or two things on the Varicose boulder, but other than that the dampness ruined everything.

Latest in case anyone's interested:

Roaches - Lower tier still had lots of snow on the tops of stuff - didn't check the upper tier. Clouds bouldering all fine. Tetris block in mint condition today.

Newstones & Baldstones - Still snow / ice around but Baldstones traverse / Sly stallone / Ripple all do-able. Fielder's wall stuff is covered in frost.

What recommendations do people have for Western Grit tomorrow? Will more than likely be alone (unless someone wants to meet up) and with one pad so not really after highballs. I know Roaches Lower Tier is the obvious choice (is it? Will it have dried in the trees?) but I'd rather go somewhere new like Newstones/Baldstones/Gib Tor. Looking at doing plenty in the 6a - 6c range and perhaps a handful of 6c+ and 7a.

Should have posted this last night but was tired and decided I prob wasnt going to bother trying to climb today....however I now would quite fancy it..  Was thinking of going to the roaches (specifically the clouds and probs various bits of the skyline). Has there been any snow/ sleet up there ? Will it be minging today despite the weather looking rather sweet....sun shining and dry from the afternoon onwards...

Title: Re: Western grit conditions
Post by: Wil on January 28, 2012, 09:05:30 pm
Ramshaw was a bit damp from runoff, but there was quite a bit climbable and a reasonable number gathered around Tierdrop, so I assume that was dry? Newstones was a bit damp on the topouts and most of it didn't get enough sun to dry properly.

The Roaches and Hen Cloud looked to be in reasonably good nick from a distance, but can't say any more than that! Most things at Ramshaw/Newstones facing that sort of direction were ok though.

No specific knowledge but there seemed to be less snow in the West (was driving over from Stockport on MOnday to East). As East was generally clear then I'd hope reliable blocs in West would be too.

It looks pretty fucking cold tomorrow anyway especially with the slight breeze, may abort to Stoke wall if it's not looking too promising!

Buxton is clear and top of Longhill was warmer than Whaley Bridge this am. There will probably be ice, but I'm sure there'll be something clear. Sleeping with the Flowers etc. was best on Saturday, lower tier will definitely be icy!

Good conditions today. Warmed up at the spring boulders. The ground was less frozen than I was hoping it to be! Also learned I can't climb slabs very well. Got one of the pads soaked despite using a tarp. Went over to Tetris and the nice crisp sun had been replaced by slowly descending fog. Bailed off Tetris quite badly missing pads and decided it was too scary with my meagre 2 pads and no spotter. Managed Trust and Thrust though which were nice. Bit of a brown pants moment standing up on that smear on Trust! :)

Everything dries pretty quickly if there"s a bit of wind, lower tier takes slightly longer, the fourth cloud would be a good bet. The jug on tierdrop can stay damp for a while but it"s big enough not to matter that much.

Anyone put off the Roaches at the moment should think again; because its been prevailing easterlies the crags have effectively sheltered the access road from the heavy drifting affecting everywhere else - access was OK; also the rock hasn't got much lying snow on it and no thaw as yet - Tetris block was mint..

It's the annual trip to the in-laws so a rare chance to enjoy t'grit.

Tomorrow looks wet but Thursday's forecast is to be bright and breezy.  Any locals got recommendations for areas likely to dry quickly?  I've never bouldered at Ramshaw so keen to try there, Teirdrop in particular, but guess that faces east so won't be getting the drying south westerly.

Cheers for any help, and if anyone's going to be out and wants to meet up drop me a line.
Title: Re: Western grit conditions
Post by: measles23 on January 01, 2014, 11:38:28 am
It's very wet here today..

I would have thought your best bet at Ramshaw would be the magic roundabout boulders - nice clean lines very exposed to the wind so dry quickly + good quality probs at a nice spread of grades.. Slightly high ball tho and pads tend to blow away if its windy!

V much doubt tierdrop would be in sorry - the top slab seeps plenty..
Title: Re: Western grit conditions
Post by: GazM on January 01, 2014, 11:49:16 am
Cheers for that.  I'm a Scottish boulderer so a few tent pegs to keep the pads down are always in the bag!
Title: Re: Western grit conditions
Post by: stvey1987 on January 01, 2014, 03:08:39 pm
The very very far skyline boulders and doxey's pool boulders all dry quickly but again that is because they are so exposed so if wind is really up might not be too much fun. Also ground around Doxey's pool boulders can be very boggy, the very far skyline boulders aren't as bad in this respect..

Both these spots can be found at the Roaches.

Roaches lower tier was bolloxed this afternoon apart from the rumour and c3p0. Ramshaw was a much better shout, cleaned monologue, epilogue, night of lust and the left hand variant and California screaming was a go too. Some people on ram air as we left as well.

Access by car to Roaches, Ramshaw and Gib Torr all possible today (Hyundai i20). Roaches lower tier pretty cold and damp as said above but upper tier had some dry spots. Pretty much all problems on calcutta buttress climbable and I saw lots of people getting on top of the large boulder with left + right groove climbs on...

Stall at Gib Torr wet (receving drips of water from melting snow high above). The fin also unclimbable (top out covvered in snow!).

Bit and bobs mentioned in above post at Ramhaw were indeed cleaned/ dry etc good job doing that ! :D

We were at ramshaw this morning and night of lust was dry but everything else was minging in the fog;roaches was also in it. Sun came out later on so it should have dried it out and it was thawing quick enough that snow on the skyline boulders will have gone. But check the webcams tomorrow because if it's in the clag again you'll be knackered.

Just for info, Roaches today was generally good and dry.  I visited Tetris block, Spring Slab and Calcutta Buttress and they were all good.  Most of the lower tier stuff in the trees were still dank and damp, and some of the upper tier things too (e.g. Nadins Traverse).

On the weak premise of living nearby but not having touched rock in weeks:

It’s been dry today and forecast for tonight dry; would have thought Tetris good to go as it dries very quickly..
Dare I say churned is often a session saver in rain, esp Wright’s

Just back from upper tier. All boulders wet but dry below main face on the right and the problems right of the start to crack and corner are dry

Great set of problems those

Lucky!!
I set out at 2:30 figuring stuff would have dried only to hit a shower... went for a potter around Ramshaw and it was soaked from the shower. Hopefully tomorrow...

And I can just hear the rain on the roof again... never mind. Frustrating day with the weather and a toddler with a developing cold...

Weather's looking alright from 11 or 12 ish at the roaches today. How long do people reckon it'll take to dry? Been showery all morning and raining overnight I think. Thinking the skyline might be alright by the afternoon?

The odd shower forecast but a decent breeze and the previous couple of days have been dry, it should be worth a look for more exposed stuff.

Considering the Roaches tomorrow. I don't really know the area at all, will the roads etc. all be OK? Last time I was there was post-lockdown and parking was a nightmare, is it still bad? Thanks

I doubt parking will be a difficulty. Getting there might be though.
You should get an idea from the Flash webcam when the sun's up.

James Grant's peak webcam roundup is a better one-stop link:
https://www.jamesgphotography.co.uk/peak-district-webcams/

The Quarnford, Flash Bar and Winking Man (when it's pointed in a useful direction) are all pretty close. Snow on the ground but I suspect the sun will have burnt the sun off the crags.
