Title: Good examples of an Egyptian?
Post by: mrjonathanr on June 23, 2019, 08:40:10 am
Does anyone know where I can find a short video example of someone doing an egyptian? Preferably someone good and female eg Shauna, Mina?

Ideally in a problem rather than Neil G instructional vid etc

It is to model to a female PE student. I have trawled YouTube to no avail. Thanks.

Anything featuring Nic sellers from the 90s should provide ample supply.

Judging by that video Tuppence looks about E1 5b!

Thanks all for the posts, some useful examples there. The exam board (Edexcel) stipulate that the candidate has to video themselves and evaluate their performance against ‘an expert’ performing the same technique so looking for a specific (female) example. There’s a few of Shauna in the World Cup Finals in this video but the others are helpful to watch too

Obviously really clear examples by Shauna, Mina et al are ideal. Further examples very welcome!

I much prefer the term ‘drop knee’ I thing it’s more literal and explanatory. Have you guys read the ukclimbing article on issues such as race, patriarchy, gender etc in route names and climbing in general? Some very important issues made there and while I think there was some over sensitivity, I do believe use of the expressions ‘Egyptian’  Or ‘gypo’ should be brought into the 21st century

Why is egyptian offensive?
Title: Re: Good examples of an Egyptian?
Post by: andy popp on June 28, 2019, 10:55:16 am
"Gypsy" is a contraction of Egyptian, reflecting the (old) mistaken belief that the Romani originated in Egypt. The further contraction Gypo is obviously offensive. However, I don't think the climbing term has any relationship to this at all.

Thanks Andy, didn’t realise that but it makes sense. I think I’ll stick to drop knee just to be on the safe side

I assume the climbing etymology stems from the hieroglyph of a dancing person, which could be deemed as offensive as portraying an entire nation by its stereotype.

I've always thought this yet I can't recall ever seeing a heiroglyph of anyone with their legs in the drop knee position.

A lot of stylised images based on hieroglyphs do. Assuming these are based on actual hieroglyphs, then some of these (http://www.afrostyly.com/gardiner/list/a/) do too.

That's where I'm stopping, this is getting worryingly close to *shudder* archaeology...

Me too, I just couldn't be bothered going there earlier. I've no idea if the position appears in ancient Egyptian wall painting either. Where it does appear is in popular culture as the Sand Dance, e.g.:

And then on up to the 80s and The Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian," which was probably the direct inspiration for the climbing term.

This tradition is undoubtedly super colonialist/orientalist/racist, but whether or not any of that really attaches to the climbing term I don't know.

There is a thread (and instagram account) called UFCK.
It’s the brainchild of a former UKB contributor named Dan Cheetham, or more recently Slartyphartblast on IG.
There was some speculation that you were a spoof/troll account of the above named individual, who has a singular and divisive sense of humour (like Monty Python, hits and misses).

Trying to understand that thread, is like eating spaghetti with a single chopstick, blindfold; with both hands tied behind your back.

Or, to put it another way, don’t worry about it. Pretty sure you’re not Dan.

Thanks Matt, I did comment on that thread asking what it was all about, it’s probably where all this comes from. I’ve already decided to steer well clear of it.

Oh, I didn’t say avoid it, it’s quite funny in places.

I mean, have you ever watched a blindfolded man, eating spaghetti, with one chopstick and both hands tied behind his back?

Basically, Will Hunt is unable to understand different personality types to his own, therefore accused you of being a bot. You're not the first; there used to be a valuable contributor to this forum called slack---line whose personality for some reason rubbed Will up the wrong way so Will mocked him unnecessarily.

Thanks again chaps, I’m a bit more literal in my humour. More Ricky Gervais than Monty Python. Love the swinging arm dance in the office, one of my favourite scenes. Not sure about the one armed man, Matt.

I saw Margo Hayes did a similar reverse kneebar on the qualifying lead route in the Toulouse Olympic qualifying event. Hate to think what it would do to knee and hip ligaments if their hand slipped off.
