Title: Canoeing up the valley from Fairholmes
Post by: simes on April 24, 2015, 09:23:50 am
Hi,
Can anyone advise me of the legality of paddling up from Fairholmes to the end of Howden reservoir and back, with an overnight bivvy at Slippery Stones? Just two people, no noise, absolutely no mess or litter.
Cheers, Si.

I don't think you are meant to be allowed to canoe/kayak on any of the Ladybower or Howden reservoirs, as they are owned by Severn Trent Water and as such get a bit funny about the potential for pollution.

Best bet is to phone the visitor centre at Ladybower and ask, or call the fishing place at Ladybower (http://www.ladybowerfisheries.co.uk/index.html) and ask them. Does seem a little odd that they allow boats on to fish but not canoes but there you go. Also, not sure where you would launch from either, probably have to go up near the Dambusters memorial at least. I've also never seen any boats on there, ever, so highly likely that if you launched you'd be spotted in an instant.

Sadly quite clearly not allowed by ST water. Don't think even fishing is allowed on the upper two. Not sure how much trouble you'd be in if caught, the problem is how visible you are.

Thanks guys. I suspected that would be the answer. I'll give them a ring anyway.

FWIW I think the primary reason a water company would dissuade people from getting into reservoirs for swimming etc is safety concerns. Bit distressing for the staff when they've occasionally had to fish out a body.

The question for me is "what is the consequence of getting caught?"
I'd research that...
