Title: Anyone else sketch/paint/doodle?
Post by: Oldmanmatt on November 27, 2014, 10:25:33 pm
Having fun with Art Studio on the iPad. Much less hassle the a real Airbrush, but I still can't get to a point beyond comic book art and still avoiding faces...

But Doodled Alex P this Arvo at work. Based it on a couple of googled photos as she wasn't available to model. 😞

Love it. Nicely done and captures the poochs style

Should the hair be more straight down though?

Yeah, rotated the image a little to sit better on the page. Would'nt have been able to do that with a "real" painting. Didn't think about...

Come on, there must another amateur scribbler out there?

I draw and sketch buildings still post architecture career. Was really proud of my final design project even if I did have to redraw an entire year's worth of work after a hard drive failure  :'(

I'd like to do some metal work sculpture at some point in time although making leather goods is becoming a current interest. Need to get less off my plate not more dammit!!

Not a bad sketch, although I was looking forward to a picture of the pooch in a life model style.

I used to draw and paint a lot, then stopped dead in my mid twenties. I still get the odd hankering to draw sometimes but haven't moved past that yet...

I'm currently a sheet metal worker/welder and whilst most of my days are spent banging out ductwork and welding up stainless sinks tables and whatnots I do try and do a bit of after hours creative metalwork. My latest creation being a cooling loop from an old freeze drying unit that I've converted into  radiator, very 1950's copper/steel architectural thingummy, which I really like. And upcycling, I'm like so of the moment...
(My main underlying message is standard metalwork is mathematically cool, but creative stuff is double cool, get welding boy)

I was the only member of my uni climbing club who studied arts. I had a couple of very small exhibitions in London that were well received (but ultimately led nowhere). I keep thinking that I'd like to get back to doing some stuff, but I don't know if I want or can go back to the place where the good stuff came from.

Yeah, at 18 I had offers from Falmouth to study Fine Art or Loughborough and Camborne to study Geology/Mining Engineering.
The pressure of choosing between 3 very different lives, proved too much.

So I ran away, literally, joined the Royal Navy and became a Marine Engineer.

Given three options, always choose the fourth.

Go for it. It's not important. Nothing hangs on it.

My childhood friend, Dave Young, and I grew up building dioramas and painting, sketching etc. he took it all the way and is now a successful illustrator (does lots of magazine covers etc).
But plenty of my classmates ended up working in Halfords/Tescos/ a.n.other...

My first ever serious arts teacher advised me to make sure I didn't have any friends that studied the subject. Good advice for many things.

Iteration.

And

Reiteration.

I'm attempting to sketch from my own imagination, without any photographic or life cues.

Thought I'd record the process.

Started by laying out a scene, just trying to put as many lines in approximately the right place as possible.

Then start to narrow it down to the "best fit" and start to consider the shadows.
Then slowly add layers of detail and shade...(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/30/ddbabedfd0dd4f0077cd097e3ec430d6.jpg)

And realise the perspective is wrong on the left arm/ leg and on and on...

Definitely hard to give any realism to the coloration on an iPad.
I've cranked it up to the maximum pixels, but it's still blocky.

After playing around...

I agreed with Jasper.

It's going to take a lot more work to produce anything major on the iPad. It's just too hard to get the perspective/proportions right, as to make any detail I need to zoom in tight. I then get carried away on one little bit and when I zoom out it doesn't quite fit with the whole.

More practice.

Still I think I've got the basis for my next poster.

The ability play around with the image on the Pad is pretty useful.

I used to draw a lot as a child/youth, of course just with pen or pencil. Never used techy stuff, it's been ages now since when I last drew something besides random stuff on the corners of book pages!

I like the first sketch with just the lines.

I like the one before the final product, with maybe a bit more definition in the face. I've always liked art, but have no drawing talent whatsoever, so I take photos instead.

Great thread! Don't know why I haven't looked. at this until now. I watched a program a while ago about David Hockney who did an exhibition of work he'd done on the iPad, some really good stuff!
I used to paint and draw loads when I was younger but like a lot of people it falls off the radar when life gets in the way, and other hobbies. I might post an example or two if I'm feeling brave...
I was never very good but loved it, proper escapism, I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid, but unfortunately it doesn't exactly pay a salary..

I used to do a bit of sketching in my early twenties too, packed in and forgot about it. Then i inherited some brushes, paints and paper, and have got into watercolour painting in the last few years. It's not quite as addictive as climbing, but absorbing nonetheless. Rest days on climbing trips are now something to look forward to.
It's a slow rate of progress with lots of moments when I feel like packing in, but I can see improvement when I look at earlier stuff.

I like that, oils?

My mother painted in oils, mostly Landscape commissions, when I was primary school age. She was moderately successful in that Lord this and Earl the other would commission her to paint a view of the family pile.
We were dragged around to various galleries where she was exhibiting, during school holidays.
She probably made about half what my dad did as a copper and in the '70s that was sweet Fanny Adams...
So she became a Road Safety officer instead.

My daughter came down with tonsillitis today, so I did this to make her feel better.
Not quite as effective as calpol.

Thank you!
I think I did ths with acrylics, but I have used oils for other stuff, I find acrylics a bit more forgiving.
I never got my head around watercolours though, I have tried but they always came out crap...
Travelling around painting houses for cash sounds great, although as your mum became a road safety officer says to me it didn't pay great! As with a lot of creative jobs they often have to be sidelines. Me and my Dad stayed in a B&B in Yorkshire while on the coast to coast where they ran an art gallery cum cafe downstairs and a B&B upstairs, now that could be my perfect existence... Would blow selling electronics for a living out of the water..

Okay toy soldiers - often regarded as intolerably geeky in the way that football-supporting fanaticism, endless car modifications and extraordinarily detailed training treatises AREN'T, but high-end painting these days has seperated from the gaming and role-playing side into an artform in it's own right. Personally I think I am aesthetic rather than artistic, I can't create stuff on a blank canvas but when I'm "painting by numbers" on a 3D model I do pretty well at colour themes and concepts (which interest me the most) as well as the technical side. And of course the fantasy and sci-fi mythologies of the lead figure universes provide a rich context for ideas and themes.

Here's a selection, in reverse chronological order, of what I've painted in the 5 years since moving to the grim frozen North (which incidentally provides generally very inspiring weather for painting - although my main displeasure about being into this side-hobby is about how sedentary it is, a few hours honing a nice green Orc skin is not good warming up for TCA...), the rest are on my other blog (http://teamshambler.blogspot.co.uk/).

Converted from this dude: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Goblin-Shaman (http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Goblin-Shaman) . Didn't try to do an exact replica, just capture the vibe of Styx. Pretty pleased with how he turned out, he's fcking tiny (20mm base) so the painting looks a bit crude close up. I put in some fun details like subtle pink shading on the rocks (like in some of the in-game lighting), bubbles in the acid vial, serrations on the knife, an Amber gem etc.

I started this conversion over 15 years ago when I was actually inspired by it, then it languished for a couple of decades as I was put off by the daunting painting that would be required. Eventually I decided to make it easier by painting it mostly metallic (which would also suit the theme well), and finished it off. Because it was almost entirely metallic, I tried to get a lot of different colours and textures in the metals: faint turquoise for the armour, dulled rust for the mechanics, glossy and oily for the pistons, clean and shiny for the weapons, and sparkly and colourful for the towers. I also tried to blend the bone sections into the metals for a biomechanical look ("Epic" scale - 120mm high - more shots (http://teamshambler.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/tzeentch-imperator-titan.html)).

Steampunk Arielle and Steampunk Tinkerbell, sculpted by the formidably skillful Seb Archer for his own Guild Of Harmony range. Very fine details on these models, some of it easy to paint, some of it less so. I went for a bright colour scheme to match the cartoon characters, and then contrasted that with grimier metals and dominatrix black leather.

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BFHOTSq9hHQ/Unjlf3-o7bI/AAAAAAAAAT4/ABrTsItDTeM/s1600/chef1.jpg)  (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y0nNlSVmfaw/UnjlgLRIUKI/AAAAAAAAAUA/ozJVusreNqQ/s1600/chef3.jpg)
Quite a tasteful model really, I converted it a bit and tried to do it justice. Bon appetit!

Some progress in 20 years of painting. The original figure was the first figure I learnt to blend on and I was very proud of the beak.

Trying something a lot grimier than my usual style.

Small scenario to make use of these similar Imperial Guard figures, with a scheme in a "future military" style.

A very sombre and serious entry into an online contest entitled "In The Air". Obviously it was fun doing the base.

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VANm_LmdqMA/TnocB7O_6RI/AAAAAAAAAF4/uJUdBCCHtSw/s1600/tzeentch2.jpg)  (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NhmFwlpD9JE/TnocBjrd10I/AAAAAAAAAFw/lnSGvxXD2W4/s1600/tzeentch3.jpg)
Tzeentch has always been my favourite Chaos power to paint due to the default colours of turquoise / purple / orange / gold. For this model I went for an oceanic style to evoke some kinda of marine origin.

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qsV6_31CIrE/TdAKJge70cI/AAAAAAAAAC4/7EKUABiXFxE/s1600/spider2.jpg)  (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-89lk6oQN160/TdAKJJjNcqI/AAAAAAAAACw/3T4ukkgopao/s1600/spider3.jpg)
Possibly the best painting I've done in the last few years, I'm very pleased with the subtle colours, lighting, and weathering.

To reflect this Elf's noble military demeanour, I went for colours evoking a Roman centurion, lots of reds with a bit of white and gold.

Orks orks orks orks. Always fun to paint.

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bn6Tg4DXJT4/TdADTLqjAyI/AAAAAAAAABA/vtqEQTMZQiU/s1600/tau_hunting1.jpg)  (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UzMUo8uCKps/TdADTfqrA_I/AAAAAAAAABI/SkhhLVUSbYg/s1600/tau_hunting2.jpg)
A friend gave me a set of 3 of these Tau Stealthsuits as a present when I was in hospital with DVTs, and when I asked what colour I should do he said white, so I did, and I customised the base for a "Scenic Base" online contest which I'm pretty pleased with. I tried to get the vibe of him exploring around a seemingly-derelict base with ominous skittering sounds coming from the walls.

I enjoyed painting this mostly due to having a really good strong copper paint.

And a Billion times more artworthy than a sectioned cow in formaldehyde...

If you've got a phone number for Steampunk Tinkerbell......?

An ear infection has left me with some free time today, and since I can't hear what anyone is saying/kids are screaming/jobs Polly is asking me to do...

Nice work Fiend, high quality pieces and always good to see non-GW figures

A couple of mates are/were professional staff painters/modellers at GW HQ in Notts and these are up there with their output, have you ever considered entering the Golden Demon competition? They are also heavily into conversions and sculpting with 'green stuff' for private commissions, which I assume you are too? I am reliably informed the living to be made as an independent pro is still very limited which is a shame as these are some seriously talented guys who put in a lot of hours.

I used to dabble in custom artwork for bikes/leathers back in the day mainly working with acrylics and an airbrush but hav'n't painted in anger in 15 years or more. I also did some figure painting more recently for my Bloodbowl teams which whilst quite respectable are very much punter level compared to your's. How long did the two female figures take, they look like 40-50+hrs plus each to me! any preferences on paint manufacturers I know I always did for airbrush and glaze work?

The problem with sketching on a black canvas is the show through. On white it just gives a misty, Indistinct, look to the sketch. Black just makes it blotchy...

Thanks Pebblespanker (and others).

My stuff is still well below Eavy Metal / current Golden Daemon standard. I reckon I paint equivalent to E6/7 standard but the guys painting at the top around E9/10 standard are ridiculously good - see Bohun, Derwish, Automato etc on this list (http://www.coolminiornot.com/topartists). I did enter GD2005 and got plenty of finalist pins but no daemons. These days the standard is so high that it would be too gruelling to spend 100+ hours on a single figure just on the off chance the judges liked it. I'm much more into speeding up my painting and getting more different figures done.

Incidentally Mike McVey - the biggest inspiration when I started painting - was a climber, I met him down the Nottingham bouldering wall soon after it opened, he was pretty good on the plastic too.

I do do some converting too - the Titan is heavily kit-bashed - but I'm pretty rubbish with greenstuff and don't do any scratchbuilding.

Most figures take me 10-15 hours per humanoid figure although I don't really count any more, I know the copper Warjack took me 12 hours and I was really pleased to get it done so quickly. I guess the faeries were about that long, the amount of fine detail makes then a bit easier to paint as I could do a lot with washes and small highlights rather then blending. The longest model (not shown) took me 25 hours converting and then 25 hours painting, I also did one that took me 40+ hours total painting, and vowed "never again" after that!

Paint manufacturers, there are loads these days. Citadel Colour, Coat D'Arms, Privateer P3 and Vallejo are the main ones. I mostly use Citadel - their Base colours and Shades are particularly useful, with a few CDA and V colours. If I was starting over I would buy the entire Citadel set as they have revamped it recently and have a really broad range.

Nice work but isn't a bit too easy to do political satire these days? ;)

For Pebblespanker, I did okay with my latest figure - the weather has been great for painting - maybe it stands up to the GW one (and I tried to do different colours):

Out of interest is there a monetary value in your figures fiend? And does it bear any reflection to the time/skill involved?
Fag packet maths 15 hours work by a highly skilled specialist (~£20/hr min?) Comes in at least £300...

Not much in mine, my quality output -to- time taken ratio isn't high enough. I guesstimate that most of my 15 hour figures would sell for £80-100 if I was lucky. To sell figures effectively, you've either got to be world class AND have a known name in the painting scene (i.e. painting kudos / celebrity sells), so maybe be selling at the prices you mentioned, OR you've got to be able to churn out a lot of reasonably painted army figures very quickly (i.e. for big army commissions). The market for decent but slow painting isn't so good.

I remember him from donkey's years back when I lived in the States. He was famous for turning his slips and mistakes, into birds and was the eras equivalent of an internet meme for turning around adversity.
My Yank colleagues in the shipyard at Thunderbolt, often heard to say "just turn it into a bird" when caught out in error...

Those look good coloured in. The one of Jerry is a classic!

Not only have I painted a new blah:

I've also done a fuckton of videos on my painting methods:

https://vimeo.com/186400197 https://vimeo.com/187085882

Each one taking about 2 hours (1 hour painting and filming, 1 hour editing) for 30 mins of video. I've done fuck all else in the last few weeks apart from a couple of wall sessions and now face the long road to recovery, what a dick.

Well it's been over a year since I last inflicted my "art" on you innocents...

This has been my latest commisioned piece at work, it is certainly not sketching and certainly owes as much to engineering as art and given that I was getting paid for it hardly constitutes a passtime activity but it was built from scratch and is completely bespoke...

Behold the periscope:

It is installed in an new office build and is conected to a camera on the roof. The eyepiece moves up and down (with motorised assistance) and there are buttons on the handle to pan the camera left and right. Here's a very short video of it lowering down.

http://vimeo.com/223343533

You may spot the vertical LED's have a blue coloured section that moves to indicate the height of the eyepiece, it doesn't come out very clearly on video though. The moving rams are copper, the body and eyepiece is powdercoated hand formed mild steel, the handles are aluminium clad in handmade copper rings, the movement is a frankenstein collection of bike parts, lead counterweights and electric motors the electronics are a arduino based custom made control unit. And yes it took a fuckton of time  :)

Instead it was pretty intensive, quick poses and brilliant fun.

Scouse I really liked your landscape but I can't see it anymore?? Anyway it looked ace, I can't draw stuff like that without it looking completely flat and lifeless so nice one.

Fiend I know less than nothing about Quake (this is a computer game right?) levels so can't really comment, but the middle one has dead nice tone/colour.

I am going to carry on the music pics, but I woke up this morning with extreme 80s sport climbing psyche (via Ru’s Instagram) and decided to draw Ben and Jerry.

I quite want to take them on an 80s euro road trip. Am I correct in thinking Ben had a 205Gti in 88/89? And where should I send them?

He certainly did in the early 90s (others will know the dates better). I had a non-climbing friend who lived on the same road as Ben around then, not knowing who he was he'd assumed (wrongly, obviously) that Ben must be a drug dealer given his apparent lack of a job, frequent absences from home, and nice car.

(N.B. Forum fucked up the image size so much I've replaced with just links)

I'm going to stop spamming these soon, maybe, but blame JamieG who gave me a wad point for painting, and also this has pretty neat colours I think so who knows....

It's another one donated by an online gaming friend. This time the colour scheme is all mine, but the cloak colour was actually inspired by watching a Starcraft 2 stream in bed one night (as I do most nights to wind down) and seeing some map designs with purple fading to electric blue, so I thought I'd give it a try! Again a bit of distracting varnish shine in the photos but I need it to stop my sweaty paws rubbing off painted areas.

Also got a seahorse in progress (not Corten) I’ll get a photo when it’s done.

I can’t figure out how to embed the images using my phone, sorry.

I can’t quite decide whether to pull my finger out and start working on this story, or just draw loads of oldskool climbers and make a poster... I suppose if I did the latter I would have a decent cast for the former.

I might make a start on Wolfgang and Kurt. Struggling to find any pics of Sean Myles other than Real Thing stills - does anyone have any? Any other requests? I have quite a long list...

Doylo has already mastered that approach (though I might’ve preempted it with Osama Bin Laden climbing a seacliff above a great white shark).

I was actually thinking that reminiscing about men in Lycra trousers with Japanese writing on it and huge chalk bags might be quite a nice antidote to arguing about kneewear...

A few years back (2014) I shared my first attempt at iPad sketching and the drawing that grew out of it. Long gone from the forum now as that Flikr account died.
Anyway, I never finished it. I’d intended to make a full painting on the pad. Well, Lockdown happened.

Thought I’d share the progression from sketch to portrait.

Thats where it started.

Leaving it at this point, I think:

I can’t shake the underlying “Comic book” style, if I use colour, though.

I would try using a grey for the teeth rather than very bright white, and possibly the same for the eyes. They’re usually slightly in shadow and they jump out of your picture a bit.

I spent ages earlier this year trying to develop a new illustration style for characters and ended up abandoning it because I couldn’t get the eyes right. Mine was less realistic than yours, but the principle is similar.

You’ve also got quite a lot of stuff going on - fine lines / texture / soft blending. I generally find thinks work better when you restrict your options / tools. Your image might immediately look better if you swapped to monochrome. Less is generally more.

Yeesss!

Ta.

You don’t know how hard it is to people to give you feedback or critique. I’ve been trying to get this portrait out for six years. The real reason I keep putting it down is knowing it’s “wrong” and getting frustrated. The iPad is a new medium for me and I have always struggled with colour. I can pencil sketch or charcoal, even ink, a portrait but despite repeated forays into airbrush, oils or Gouache, I’m limited to landscape or still life. I know I have a tendency to pick overly vibrant colours (I do the same when photo editing) and it just doesn’t work in portraiture.
I spend hours, with a rule, checking dimensions and proportions against source and colour matching. Doesn’t work. My brain is off. I suppose there’s not much pastel, subtle or muted about me; crashing through life like a Pamplona bull on uppers.

Anyway, I re-drew the teeth, entirely in greys with an ivory cast, there’s no white even in the eyes, then I stuck the whole thing under a grey wash and erased the wash over the black behind.
And it was still borderline garish.
So I stuck it through some filters (I love this about working electronically, as long as I refrain from acknowledging that it’s “cheating”).

I’m including the source material, so you can see that I am slightly hamstrung by the reality of her very bright eyes and teeth.

I’m also finding harder because I haven’t faithfully tried to reproduce one of the photos. I quite liked the pose in the bottom centre, but if I sketched it at that angle, it looked really odd in isolation. I liked the angle etc in the centre shot, but wanted it without the glasses etc etc.

Under the wash:

I think it works better monochrome. The lower line of the lips is very pronounced, mainly because you’ve not added any shadow below. In the pics (apart from the ones with lots of frontal flash) she has varying degrees of shadow between lip and chin. I think adding that would make the mouth look more natural.

Also, the hair. In some areas you’ve smudged the hair a bit. I think this works better than very discrete / sharp single lines. The hair on the RHS facing looks better than on the left for that reason (I think).

What are you doing this in, Procreate?
Title: Re: Anyone else sketch/paint/doodle?
Post by: nik at work on December 09, 2020, 12:53:27 pm
The bottom one works well, there’s still something slightly out of line about the look of the teeth and the top hair section above the black area looks slightly out of position to me?

FYI I know sweet fa about portraiture in general or drawing on an iPad.

OMM. I don't want to be too critical but this might help. From when you've first posted versions of this picture, I've thought there is something slightly off about both the proportions of the features in relationship to the face, and the relative angles of the facial features.

For the former, I think maybe just a bit more shading around the face, especially the left side of the image would help. In the reference picture, she has the shadow of her sleeve there. In your digital painting it looks like a bit too much cheek making the face look a tiny bit wide and the features a tiny bit squeezed together.

For the latter, it might be worth drawing some precise lines through the eyes, nose, and mouth on both the reference image and your painting and see if there's any discrepancies. To me it looks like there is a slight extra tilt in the mouth, and  the right hand eye (viewer's pov, not her's) is either very slightly dropped down or angled down.

There's plenty of good stuff like the skin tones, overall balance, neck subtlety etc as others have said. And actually it does work well in monochrome, maybe just a bit more atmospheric (ugh, the cliche!)

Too critical? Try growing up with a mother who’s a pro, oft commissioned, artist.

You were spot on.

I would never have drawn guide lines on a paper project, totally missed the point that I could stick them on a different layer and switch them on and off on the pad. I was using the stylus and my thumb... Luddite!
Lifted the lines from the centre bottom photo and altered it to the correct angle.
Yep, mouth was skewed and her left eye too low. Below with guides and the corrected pupil position. You were also correct in that I’d been gradually increasing the width of her face, as I went, leaving the features pinched. This is already shaved back to the correct width:

Took a little exploring of the editing tools, but I moved and blended the features, then re-drew the pupil.

Then I thought about Yoss’ “less is more” comment. So I dialled it all back, for a more Rembrandt (?) (ish) feel.

Some vaguely old skool vibes for the geeks in the house:

Chaos Plaguelord
This is a model by Avatars Of War, but is a direct correlation with Games Workshop's style for Chaos warriors of Nurgle - the Chaos God of plague, pestilence, death and decay. Fitting, huh. Nurgle's traditional colour is a sickly rotting green, but I flipped this idea over and painted the armour in a bruised purple, with only the tabard in green, and used a dark turquoise plume and some verdigris to bridge the tones between that and the purple. I'm quite pleased with the result, having clear recipes for the purple and copper helped.

Goblin Hack 'n' Slash
A Goblin Hero from Gamezone Miniatures. Again quite comparable to Games Workshop's old/mid-skool style (not their modern rubbish), but even more charicatured. This was....variable to paint. Most of it was okay, the weapons were really fun getting a strong blended metallic, but the hood did not turn out as planned...  My red recipe was b0rked with not enough red in the mid-tones, and the complex folds and creases were exactly in between "textured enough to be effectively washable" and "clean enough to be easily blendable". So I'm not fully happy with that but the overall vibe I'm okay with.

I actually like the goblin’s hat, it just seems more faded and worn. Fabrics don’t fade colours evenly, so in ageing they both change colour and shade.

Love the oxide detail on the axe, too.

Thanks guys. OMM  - yeah I don't mind the finish on the hood, but it's not as vivid as I wanted. I am chuffed with the other dude's axe though, a prominent part of the model and I think I got the balance right between brightness and weathering.

RobK - too long. I'd say most of these take me maybe 15-ish hours, plus procrastination time? I'm constantly trying to speed up my painting but still end up faffing on some bits...

Ok, advise sought.

I did this sketch when I was 14/15 and it’s lived in my old art folder ever since it came down off the classroom wall.
Typically for me then, it started as a doodle on the back page of a textbook, in a different class. I then cut the page out and glued it onto a bit of scrap paper to alter the composition before sticking it (with tape) into the standard black paper frame of a 1980’s “O” level art class.
I’d like to salvage it, the backing paper has wrinkled and distorted, but that can be easily replaced. My question is, there is quite a lot of brown discolouration on the sketch it’s self. I’m thinking this is because I used a bare finger to smudge the pencil at the time, instead of a sponge, and the oils  left on the paper have developed that patina over time. Does anyone have any ideas how to remove it? Obviously, without destroying the pencil underneath.

I would leave it, the discolouration etc, gives it character, value etc. The marks from the finger smudging are intrinsic to the way you worked at the time and in my mind add to the drawing, A new frame will maybe give it the fresher look you are looking for.

Some exotic knight dude or dudess from Privateer Press.

The colour scheme was inspired by Hellpoint (http://"https://store.steampowered.com/app/628670/Hellpoint/"), a cool sci-fi soulslike game I was playing over Christmas. Yes the armour is kinda fancy, yes it was a paint in the arse to paint, but no those two aspects are not related! The actual armour painting was pretty simple (dark turquoise base, black lining, two translucent purple highlights, one brighter purple highlight, lilac edge all over, pale cream edge on the sharpest points), but repeating that over the whole thing did my tits in, and that would have been the case for any colours.

It's just like all those naff Youtube videos floating around: "INSANE HACK TO PAINT AMAZING SPACE MARINES QUICKLY OMG!!!" which show you how to do a lovely swift kneepad in 10 minutes.....and then all you have to do is to repeat that over 38 other sodding armour plates 🙄. "Draw two circles....now draw the rest of the fucking owl" etc etc.

Kommander Sorscha of the Khador faction, from the Warmachine game, by Privateer Press. One of the earliest "classic" figures from this company, despite the somewhat goofy pose. The traditional Khador colours are red, black, and gold. So I went for blue-grey and steel-silver ;).

Next toy soldier will be vaguely topical. You have been warned.

Now then! Good question. As you'd expect it's a bit of a minefield, in terms of pricing, small-child suitability, and whether you commit to the homogenous Big Hobby capitalist mega-corp that is Games Workshop.

GW do have all the charm of Adidas-Red-Bull-Diamond, BUT they are mostly very good quality and have lots of choice for getting the poor wee buggers hooked on toy soldier crack as soon as possible so the parents go bankrupt trying to pay for the addiction AHEM I mean starting out easily. Alas true old skool Warhammer has been replaced by some naff, indistinct, designed-by-committee toss called Age Of Sigmar although there's still some potentially decent models to paint in that. There's also the added benefit that the GW Youtube channel has a lot of decent tutorials for basic painting.

Starter kit examples:
Paint sets:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/40k-Paint-and-Tool-Set-EN-ES-2020
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Aos-Paints-tools-Eng-spa-port-latv-rom-2018

A few models and a few paints:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Space-Marines-Paint-Set-EN-ES-2020
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Necrons-Paint-Set-EN-ES-2020

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Nhaunt-Paint-Set-Eng-spa-port-lat-rom-2018

^^^ These are based on the "Two armies and a rulebook game starting set" so are limited just to the featured armies. The "Next Steps" bit on the website has a good selection of ""budget"" options for adding models but is also only limited to those armies, so if he wants to have a choice and paint a different style of model, the Start Collecting sets are worth an expensive look:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warhammer-40-000?N=1125463923+2917003483&Nr=AND(sku.siteId%3AGB_gw%2Cproduct.locale%3Aen_GB_gw)&Nrs=collection()%2Frecord[product.startDate+<%3D+1611825000000+and+product.endDate+>%3D+1611825000000]&view=all

(Copy and past since UBB code has wanked up the links)

For other manufacturers, the way forward is a lot less clear. There are LOTS of them but very few if any have a consistent  and easy to grasp sci-fi / fantasy range. Possibly the best option is Privateer Press and their Warmachine / Hordes game systems, which aren't too pricey and have lots of single models available, albeit tedious to search through:
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/warmachine/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/warmachine/starter-sets/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/hordes/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/hordes/starter-sets/
(You may have to hunt independent online retails and/or Ebay to get their stuff)

For individual models with a Warhammer Fantasy feel, there's a couple of good smaller companies:
http://www.gamezoneminiatures.com/tienda/en/
https://avatars-of-war.com/sh/en/
Delivery might be slow but some of the sculpts are good. The Dwarf, Chaos Warrior, and Goblin I painted above are from these two.

Paints etc from other manufacturers:
GW do good paint sets and a massive range of paints but their paints are expensive and variable in coverage. Also some people prefer the dropper bottles so here's some well-reputed alternatives:
https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-washes-etc/army-painter-warpaints/warpaints-starter-paint-set-new
https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-washes-etc/vallejo-paints/vallejo-paint-sets
Similarly for brushes:

Element Games is 10 mins drive from Chez Fiend so feel free to give them some support :)

A few models and a few paints:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Space-Marines-Paint-Set-EN-ES-2020
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Necrons-Paint-Set-EN-ES-2020
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Scast-Paint-Set-Eng-spa-port-latv-rom-2018
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Nhaunt-Paint-Set-Eng-spa-port-lat-rom-2018

^^^ These are based on the "Two armies and a rulebook game starting set" so are limited just to the featured armies. The "Next Steps" bit on the website has a good selection of ""budget"" options for adding models but is also only limited to those armies, so if he wants to have a choice and paint a different style of model, the Start Collecting sets are worth an expensive look:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warhammer-40-000?N=1125463923+2917003483&Nr=AND(sku.siteId%3AGB_gw%2Cproduct.locale%3Aen_GB_gw)&Nrs=collection()%2Frecord[product.startDate+<%3D+1611825000000+and+product.endDate+>%3D+1611825000000]&view=all

(Copy and past since UBB code has wanked up the links)

For other manufacturers, the way forward is a lot less clear. There are LOTS of them but very few if any have a consistent  and easy to grasp sci-fi / fantasy range. Possibly the best option is Privateer Press and their Warmachine / Hordes game systems, which aren't too pricey and have lots of single models available, albeit tedious to search through:
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/warmachine/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/warmachine/starter-sets/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/hordes/?sort=priceasc
https://store.privateerpress.com/games/hordes/starter-sets/
(You may have to hunt independent online retails and/or Ebay to get their stuff)

For individual models with a Warhammer Fantasy feel, there's a couple of good smaller companies:
http://www.gamezoneminiatures.com/tienda/en/
https://avatars-of-war.com/sh/en/
Delivery might be slow but some of the sculpts are good. The Dwarf, Chaos Warrior, and Goblin I painted above are from these two.

Paints etc from other manufacturers:
GW do good paint sets and a massive range of paints but their paints are expensive and variable in coverage. Also some people prefer the dropper bottles so here's some well-reputed alternatives:
https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-washes-etc/army-painter-warpaints/warpaints-starter-paint-set-new
https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-washes-etc/vallejo-paints/vallejo-paint-sets
Similarly for brushes:
https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/brushes/army-painter-brushes

Element Games is 10 mins drive from Chez Fiend so feel free to give them some support :)

Not sure if you grasp this, but it’s probably easier and cheaper to get into Cocaine as a hobby.

And yeah Games Workshop makes splashing out on new 5.10s, Gorilla Chalk and a couple of bouldering mats seem like a budget option.

VACCINE'S READY MOTHERFUCKERS!

Topical eh! A great and characterful sculpt from Forge World that was one of the most fun figures I've painted - having a lot of variety on one model meant I never got bored painting too much of the same thing. I particularly enjoyed choosing some appropriate colours that I don't normally paint, and also painting the soft pale curvy tummy with gentle highlighting.
Feel free to share this far and wide as I'm chuffed to do something relevant to the current bollox times...

Oh, that's GORGEOUS, nice work.

Got a link to where people can buy the model? I think I've got friends who might want one. Lots of folks seem to be getting back into tabletop RPGs during the pandemic.

And yes, sure do, only comes in a pack of two with another model, and is expensive, but...

Forgeword's whole Necromunda characters range seems really nice, full of detail.

Seems to be a suitable season / current weather for this so might as well share a couple:

Female Dwarf!

This was inspired / encouraged by an ex-partner who I'm still in friendly contact with online. She is Scottish and ginger, hence the hair colour and, well, Dwarfs are almost was grumpy as Scots...

I struggled a bit with the face on this and of course the camera picks out the roughness and varnish issues perfectly 🙄 But I'm really happy with the metals and colour scheme.

Green Wizard!

This model is actually Sharkey (aka a covert Sauraman) from GW's Lord Of The Rings range, but I just liked the model itself and painted it as a normal wizard. The painting isn't quite as smooth as I'd like (I get bored on large uni-colour areas!), and the varnish a bit gritty, but I'm pleased with the colour scheme.

The usual bollox, in lieu of any sort of challenging climbing / training....(although I think I did these slowly and sporadically enough to not detract from my rehab, at least).

Two models that aren't Warhammer but closely resemble Warhammer Chaos factions - Nurgle sorceror first with the usual rot and decay (albeit a bit less gruesome  than normal, and maybe a hint of Tzeentch in there??), and Khorne warrior second with traditional red / gold armour.

I was trying a few focused painting styles - really rich and sharp red on the warrior, and pastels, colour fades, and stippling on the sorceror.

What's better than a Dwarf in power armour??

A Dwarf in power armour with a flamethrower, of course. Next question!

Really happy with most of the painting on this one especially the armour. Quite unhappy with the photos which for some reason decided to pick out all the -micro-roughness from the varnish and other imperfections as if they were the main focus 🙄 Although at least it got the colours spot on.

shit the bed. You must have a steady hand, I guessed they were at least 2-3 times that size.

shit the bed.
Nearly happened last night, this was the curry I ordered:

Quote
Devils Naga
Phall style dish cooked with tiger naga chillies, giving a very evil hot & tasty flavour
They're not wrong. The sauce looked like just pureed chillies. I managed 7 mouthfuls including 5 bits of chicken over 45 mins and had to bin the remaining 2/3 of the dish.

Anyway, yeah, they're smol. I do have decades of practise though, and high quality small brushes (Windsor and Newton Series 7 sizes 00 and 000 for the fine details). I definitely can't paint any detail work after coffee as I'm too shaky  ::)

Do they see use for gaming, or is it purely for the love of art? Gorgeous work either way.

It's purely to obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul. No gaming, i did try years ago but kinda went for a lower-powered army (Dwarfs) and wasn't very good at it. It was entertaining doing quicker army standard painting though. These current ones take a loonnngggg time.

Fiend, your painting is excellent. Really impressive stuff. I've been painting some little lads and lasses myself of late, and used them in some games too

Nothing like fiends but okay enough!

Nice one Wellsy. Strong squad look. Is that Infinity (at a very vague guess)??

Yeah, brilliant game. Getting in a couple of matches a week right now which is cool. Very different from 40k or anything like that. Skirmishy and quite cyberpunk in vibe
