Title: Going Down...
Post by: chappers on February 03, 2009, 02:46:36 pm
just got a text, Ian Vickers just made the second ascent of Going Down at Longridge.
this is the lower, much harder full traverse from right to left and graded 8c+
beast.

Grrr, Chappers, I came here to post that.  Shouldn't you be busy at work, or are you off for a sledging day?

I'm surprised that it was dry today, thought the snow would have melted and seeped through, but obviously not.

Without being phasecious, but I expect the grade to be the equivalent sport route grade due the length of the problem, as opposed to a bouldering grade???

Either way, great effort Ian, obviouslythe snow and seepage aint too bad up there today.

Yes, route 8c+. Originally given font 8A+ I think, but it must be harder.

if its the same in both directions wonder what that would be? im sure ive heard that the other traverse "traverse of the gods" is 8b+  and 8c+ there and back?

Cheers

Its the same one but very late of Matlock as I've not lived there since early 2004.

I appologise for the incorrect spelling of my own name. You know what its like rushing to get back to work, dyslexia and all.

Ian V can easily do the high version, so I wouldn't be surprised if Trav of Gods then Going Down isn't much/any harder for him than just Going Down on it's own.  There's the good rest in the corner towards the end of Trav of the Gods, and again before the hard bits of Going Down on which he could fully recover.  I think it would just be a matter of him trying it until he did the Going down crux, and getting to the big holds after it.

I thought Pascal had done it too, but if Ian has the 2nd ascent then ry must have dropped the last moves.

I take it Longridge is dry, which is also good news.

i think squeek was making reference to the spelling of Jeewooth...

just had a phone conversation with adam, he is still buzzing from ian doing it, not heard him so excited in a long time! adam compared the difficulty of the 1 crux move to "about as hard as zoo york" (so not very hard for you then mate!!!)

as far as i know Ryan cam very close and dropped the end (i think he told me that in the summer). it must be on for another ascent soon though.

i expect longridge will be wet in a days time as it seeps through.

When was the first ascent?

Ryan got through all the hard moves on it a year or so ago only for his foot to slip on pretty easy ground. He was trying it again last year in Autumn, but couldn't get through the crux. Sure he would do it now with a few weeks re-working.

When was the first ascent?

Neil Carson quit around 1997 so it probably would have been a year or two before then, I remember reading the report in On the Edge.

So does Traverse of the Gods go in the opposite direction to this (i.e. left to right)?  Also does it just following the line of least resistance below the top of the crag of does it strictly follow the traverses described in the topo?

Traverse of the Gods does go left to right, least line of resistance, and is quite highball now on the high break above where they've dug out the ground.
