Title: Scarpa stix replacements
Post by: BB on January 29, 2010, 11:18:25 am
My bargain basement scarpas are nearing the end of their life and try as I might I can't find anywhere that still has a 41 in stock. I should have ordered some more pairs but sadly, too late one thinks of what one should have done.

So, what I'm after is some ideas about sensible alternatives.

Scratch that, looks like the scarpa Vapour S is the direct replacement. Now all i need is somewhere that sells them.

Have you thought about the boosters? I went through my last pair of stix recently and the boosters seem very similar (I take the same size in both). I'm guessing they will be going on the cheap when the new range comes out.

I've got a similar problem  :'( I should have bought more when I had the chance, but didn't. Rock and Run do seem very adept at getting Scarpa on the cheap, so it may well be worth seeing if the Booster goes down the same path as the Stix.

Anyone know how Boosters compare in sizing to Dragons or Verdes?

I own Magos and don't like Boosters as the instep is too high - and therefore slack - for me. 41 in both is the best size. Having tried on Dragons I'd say my size is 8.5  so that's your equivalent as far as I can tell.

PS: WTF was wrong with the Spectros (apart from the pain)?

I'll have a look when they hit the bargain bin. In the meantime, the blurb from scarpa says this:

Vapour S - Train, boulder, climb - a super aggressive and sensitive slipper.
Instinct S - The most sensitive shoe in the entire SCARPA collection - perfect for training, bouldering and sport routes.

I'd be interested to know what the difference is in real terms...apart from the colour obviously.

Climb Newcastle are selling the instinct slippers for 90 sheets. They seem to be the only ones stocking them. £90 though!...  :'(

Dave Mac has done a review of the Instincts on his blog. Really rates them for indoors/training but not so much for outdoor sport...

Rockrun now have them at £28, and have have tiny feet, and they just sent round a £10 off token for over £50 spent.

Upshot is I have 3 pairs of stix on their way for £78  :bounce:

Didn't mean to brag, but I'm well chuffed. :dance1:

This may not be any help at all but if you can fit in them the low volume version of the boosters (rockettes) are at £49.99 in a size 39 on the Lakes Climber website.

Magos are the same price but they only seem to have a 42 available.

Thanks for the heads up. I noticed the rockettes, but to be honest, I doubt I'd get into them.

I know its in the US but try this place if you're desperate. I got a couple of pairs in my size (44) a few weeks ago but they're going fast!

What about the new Scarpa instinct S ?

I still don't get why the instinct is the only model that has decent rubber coverage on the toe, could they not have done it with the vapour as well?
Also would the 5.10 team be an option?
Tried a pair on the other day and they feel like having skin tight claws attached to your feet, the more I get into overhanging/roof stuff the more I fancy picking up a pair.
