Title: M6 accessible bouldering
Post by: GazM on May 20, 2018, 07:02:28 pm: I'm driving from Stafford back home to Scotland on tuesday and planning to stop for a few hours bouldering at some point. Am i right in thinking that Carrock Fell is going to be the best bet for easy access from the M6?

If not, where else would folk recommend?

And if so, any specific problems to do at Carrock up to 7A? Other than Rouse's Wall, which I'm pretty sure I've done.

Post by: thekettle on May 20, 2018, 08:14:44 pm: Carrock is a good bet, about 20-30 mins from the M6. It'll be in the shade in the afternoon, can get very midgey if the wind drops though. At around 7A I'd recommend:

Buck Rogers
Punks Life
Nova Scotia Arete
Sing a Rainbow - if you're short on time head here as there's another 2 decent 6C+'s on the same bloc.

Expect some to be trickier in hot conditions.
The Silverdale crags Moose suggests are closer to the M6 (from Jct 35) but don't have the quality at <7A of Carrock Fell, best at 7B upwards. The stand out 7A in that area for me is Discohesion (stand start) at Cringlebarrow. Bit of an esoteric highball, it'll be cool and shady if it's hot, but the crag has nothing like the selection of problems that Carrock has!

Post by: tomtom on May 20, 2018, 09:38:39 pm: If its hot/warm the Carrock will be tough on the skin... second sing a rainbow - though its a 10 min thrash up the hill.. I always get spanked there grade wise :D

@Woodwell there are some good high 6's to 7A's... a few on Toms roof area - and Whistler is a good straight up 7A on the area to the right. If its warm then its a good shady place to be...

If you're further south then Craig Y Longridge - 15 min from M6..loads there to go at.. (andyF beat me to it..)

Kentmere is only 30 min from the M6... Lots there in your range...

I wiled away a few hours at Carrock on my way home yesterday, helped by a very obliging north-easterly breeze that kept the shady stuff cool. High Flyer and Boardman's Arete SDS were the highlights. It took me a long time to work out what you meant by that! I actually have it and it's proven very handy many times on similar trips but i just wanted to check with the collective.
Also, High Flyer isn't in BB :tease:
