Title: Enlighten me: decent LED work lights for bouldering
Post by: Danny on October 13, 2020, 11:38:49 am
I currently use a couple of the old (and now discontinued) cheap screwfix lights for night sessions. They're now starting to die, and last year I got one of their newer things (https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-led-rechargeable-work-light-20w-7-4v/286gy (https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-led-rechargeable-work-light-20w-7-4v/286gy))...absolute crap. Heavy, not that bright, and short on battery. So, I'm in the market for some new ones. Looking for bright, light, low profile, and with a sufficiently long battery life.

I might punt for this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/defender-led-work-light-20w-5v/415ht (https://www.screwfix.com/p/defender-led-work-light-20w-5v/415ht). But I thought I’d ask on here for recommendations first.

Cheers!

Can you not replace the batteries in the old ones?

I've seen people recommend the Erbauer ones. I notice that you've linked to the 20W one. You might have more success with the 30W or 40W versions?

Not AFAIK?

IDK, I just assumed that I'd get something similar in terms of run time and brightness for the price at Screwfix without looking at the specs in detail. 3 hrs run time is ok, but probably at the bottom end of what I want, even if they're bright AF.

I’ve just bought two of the Defender ones you linked. Not used outside yet but seem really bright, light and fold flat which is great compared to my bulky old ones. Don’t know about the battery yet but got a feeling don’t last super long.

Says 10 hour runtime in that screwfix link. Hard to believe . Cheaper here :  https://www.mad4tools.com/defender-led-20w-rechargeable-slimline-floor-carry-floodlight?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_source=google_shopping?&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoJX8BRCZARIsAEWBFMJ0g_CwYPd7hcIG37ecsE5kw-F5TmPTdj9QC8Hp5NC3-xjwEEYOJQ0aArH6EALw_wcB (https://www.mad4tools.com/defender-led-20w-rechargeable-slimline-floor-carry-floodlight?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_source=google_shopping?&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoJX8BRCZARIsAEWBFMJ0g_CwYPd7hcIG37ecsE5kw-F5TmPTdj9QC8Hp5NC3-xjwEEYOJQ0aArH6EALw_wcB)

Tried opening them up? Probably a generic battery pack/size inside... if its not soldered even easier!

We have some mains defender lights at work. OK, nothing special.

We also have some Dewalt 18V tripod lights. With a 9Ah battery, they last about 4 hours on full, or 8 hours on half. They are well expensive (£600 for the light and battery iirc) but insanely good.

So...

I'd look for some kind of 18v dewalt /makita etc. LED that takes removable power tool batteries. That way you can replace them when the batteries die. And you can get more batteries as budget allows for more burn time.

I was a bit disappointed to see that the Erbauer options didn't work on batteries from their system:

I will hopefully be distributing these in the new year.

Not the cheapest but they are amazing.

I know how to use Google thanks. I'm really looking for feedback from boulderers who've used lamps in anger.

Handy. Yeah, flatness looks like a useful attribute. I hate stuffing mine into my pads.

That's a decent idea. I already have a Ryobi impact driver.

Not the cheapest, but I've been using these for the last few years and have no complaints:
https://www.toolstation.com/unilite-slr-3000-led-rechargeable-work-light/p87625

As well as using them outside I use them on my board all winter (no power in my shed). So long as I've kept an eye on the charge levels and topped them up beforehand I've never had them run out mid-season.

These look great. Any experience with burn times (Vega ones)? Can't see anything in the brochure.

Another thumbs up for the Makita ones. I've got the DML805 which lasts for 3hours on one battery.

They're pricey if you don't already own any makita batteries. But pretty reasonable if you've already got a load of makita tools.

I will update on here when they are available. We are stocking them for industry purposes obviously not climbing but thought a few on here might be interested. Very heavy duty and designed for daily use so imagine they will last if just for bouldering.  Should be on our company website in a month and in stock by the end of the year.

This light is pretty amazing, lights up a huge area and two would be incredible. They run on Sony camera batteries which are super cheap, so just buy a few.

Light stands are good too. Super light and you can get height which is useful in certain scenarios.

Be careful with them, one of mine fell out of my pad and fucked the charging port  :rtfm: Not very durable .

Look class. What do you think the batteries/hr rate is on these with acceptable light intensity?

Hmmm. And I've just clocked a design flaw. Unlike my old lights, the on switch is on the backside of the unit, and could easily be pressed when pad stuffing. Verdict: avoid.
