Title: Ogwen Bouldering
Post by: Dna on May 09, 2005, 10:43:09 pm
Hey, I'm heading to North Wales this weekend for the first time and was going to head for  the Ogwen valley bouldering but would love to hear some opinions and recommendations. Any help and info is greatly appreciated. Thanks Dan

Thanks for the info. I'll try and check out those blocs. From what I've heard when I've been travelling the bouldering should be pretty amazing.

if you ain't already got the guidebook then you aughta get it. If you've got it then have a read, but tear out the pages containing caseg fraith, galt-y-ogof and milestone buttress.

The above statement represent the vies of the individual in question and are not representative of anyone elses opinion in the world.

classic. that said, i fed the caseg fraith and gallt yr ogof pages in my book to the goldfish. milestone is ok but don't go there first.

as mentioned above sheep pen is crazy good, and for a little something else check out idwal cottage crag; the V6 arete there is off the wall - and quite a few other great problems too.

word - idwizzle cottage is one of the few crags i've enjoyed climbing at when it was crazy hot - good views down the valley and ting too, plus its roadside.

Go to Caseg, Braichmelyn, Sheep Pen, Idwal Cottage Crag, George's Crack. Also, despite the entirely valid  opinions of Cofe and Dave,  Caseg Fraith is very good. Admittedly the upper section is more of a 'local's' venue, but the lower wall is class.

I do agree with Dave and Cofe about the main Gallt yr Ogof boulder - this is only any good if you are strong.

What are the top 5 North Wales venues for a visiting boulderer then?

How's about this?

1. Porth Ysgo
2. Wavelength
3. Ogwen
4. Sheep Pen
5. Braichmelyn

Should point out that this is an example and not an opinion, as I havent visited most of them!

All of those places you mention are great, except that Ogwen is an entire area including Sheep Pen and Braichmelyn.
