Shark interviews Ben Moon .......
As promised (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,22129.0.html)
Ben Moon interview, UKBouldering.com on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/75374593)
Big up to Guy again for the editing and Ben for being Ben
-
Nice one for asking the speed question ;D
-
Awesome stuff!
-
Great :2thumbsup:
-
Bookmarked for fingerboard session psyche this evening......
-
Nice one for asking the speed question ;D
There were some other UKB questions after the camera had stopped and from what I remember his answers were roughly as follows:
How about this: Ben was pretty much the best back in the day, does he reckon he would be pretty much best now as well if he was 25 given what we know about training etc these days? Would be be do Change and La Dura Dura as well as Goia (sp?) etc??
He couldnt really answer this
Which first ascent are you most proud of and which project do you most regret not quite ticking? ie. the one that got away
He said what the routes you might expect Statement, Cypher, Hubble, Black Lung, Voyager Low start. He regreted Northern Lights more than Action Direct.
Ask him whether he thought he could have made it as a footballer, and if so would he rather have done that than climbing?
Given the choice he definitely would have preferred to score a goal for England than what he has done climbingwise
-
Brilliant :2thumbsup:
-
Thoroughly brilliant stuff guys! Please do more....
-
Actually really refreshing to have the 'two guys sit down and have a conversation' style rather than EPIC wonky footage, RAD high fives and the rest.
-
enjoyed that,i'm available for an interview it would be a great start then massive gaps in the middle and an anti climax at the end!
-
great stuff.
-
+1 really enjoyed it, wish more people doing such candid interviews.
-
Agreed, Simon - that was absolutely brilliant, thanks.
So refreshing to hear someone as talented as Moon talking openly and honestly. Listening to him brings into sharp relief how totally anodyne so many of the current bunch of climbers who the court media attention are. No holding back on his opinion of Rich Simpson, quite rightly
-
Ta guys. ;D
While I'm on a roll can someone PM me Gaskin's contact details and I'll see if he's up for it.
-
Best asking Greg, although I somehow doubt you'll get far.
-
That was great
-
Probably showing my climbing video geekiness here, but is Graeme's question about "wet on the holds" a sly reference to Ben's reaction to falling off something in One Summer?
"...there's wet on the holds! Look, proof..."
-
aka Peter Pan.
-

"...there's wet on the holds! Look, proof..."
Wasn't it "Grease. Proof" ?
Edit: love the video/interview, great idea setting it up.
-
Brilliant!
Thanks!!!
-
Quality interview

Don't have a copy to hand but you're on the right track there - Ben is moaning about "getting wet on the holds" iirc...
-
Great interview, thanks
-
Excellent interview Simon.

Had to clear this up. It's Superman which he falls off and says "It's greasy. Look, proof". problem starts at about 32:30.
Looks mad now seeing bouldering like that with no pads.
-
What's the actual "getting wet on the holds" quote though? Or was that in a different video?
-
Watched all of One Summer tonight and while the volume on my laptop is shit I'm sure that quote isn't in it.
Don't recall that line from anything I've seen
-
How can I get hold of one summer? Never seen it and a quick google didn't show much
-
Thanks Simon, good viewing.
Happy to do the subtitles if you wish to interview Richie Crouch ; )

Re "wet on the holds", about 1990, Neil OTE Pearson started a fanzine called Rubble or something, and that quote was on the cover, so long before One Summer.
Great interview.
Feedback? It would be nice to get the acoustics a bit sweeter? There's people on here who know a lot about that. I bet a few little tweaks in the setup would make it sound lots better.
-
:agree:
Need to tone down shark's sychophantic laughing a bit. ;)
Really good interview.

Might be worth sorting out the lighting a bit, find somewhere without direct sun, like by a north facing window or film it on an overcast day. I found myself staring at the burning white mug on the table all the time.
Good interview though, trod the fine between sycophancy and controversy about right. Just next time stick another ten bob in the meter.

Guy said he could of changed to make it have more bass but hadn't done that before.
He said it's worth recording on my phone as well so he can synchronise to audio, so I'll do that next time.
-
Great interview, cheers Shark! Planning on doing anymore?

A separate audio device would help, close to the subject, ideally a digital recorder with foam covered mics. Whatever you use to record sound, location and furnishings have a big impact on sound. However nice your dining room looks, you'll find acoustics are far better (less echo) in a room with soft furnishings. Sofas, carpet, curtains and cushions all absorb echo so improve the sound.
Good work by they way.

Lot of armchair filmmakers out there. Here you go Shark:

I reckon the lo-fi production values and Shark's masterful "is this thing on?" amateur filmmaker act ;) were instrumental in creating such a relaxed interview.
-
Voyager low start is more impressive when the Red Chillis are taken into account!
-
Awesome stuff..... interesting comments on Rich Simpson in particular. Only criticism is it was too short!
-
Home decor up to scratch ?
Looks OK, maybe next time mix up with some art deco shit. Rock that 1920s look, get Gaskins to wear spats and a dickie.

I lost 15 minutes of my life trying to to fix that, next time i'll pm you.
-
:agree: What Obi Said... You could also try close/clip-on mics to limit the room acoustics somewhat (if you need mics then lemme know as one of my clients works for a big mic manufacturer so i'm sure I can get them cheap..)
Great interview... Looking forward to his book even more now.
:D

What cowboyhat said. Still cool tho.
-
What cowboyhat said. Still cool tho.
And what was that exactly? "Lot of armchair filmmakers out there"
I was being sarcastic.
The content is important, its very interesting.
Maybe Simon could have considered the 'tape' running out but otherwise its not a bad job. Setting up quickly and filming a broadcast-able interview well is a team effort involving loads of kit and years of experience, and the cameramen are never expected to also do the questions themselves.
We're spoiled by seeing videos made by students with infinite time or over-caffeinated sugary drink company with an infinite budget.
Oh and Guy, yes no problem. It takes ten seconds.
-
No, I just meant your recommended kitlist, especially the roaring fire :)
-
Apologies, I was wrong on the internet.
-
I agree with the low fi ness contributing to how relaxed he was during the interview - he seemed really chilled and happy. I've seen him interviewed a fair bit on all the films and he's not always come across that well. Maybe he's got more relaxed as he's got older? I thought it was a great interview and am looking forward to hearing about Ben's continued progress up the grades. Hope he does a Stevie Haston and gets back up to 9a!
-
Voyager low start is more impressive when the Red Chillis are taken into account!
I thought about that as well!!!
-
Ok, re "You're getting wet on the holds..."
After posting last night I had my doubts that this was in a video and after consulting other old twats today I can confirm that it wasn't...
It all stems from a certain poster on this forum overhearing Jerry berating Ben at the Plantation for "getting wet on the holds" in a rather whiney manner.
This incident was relayed by said poster with such hilarity that it soon became part of Peak folklore and it was commonplace to hear it (in a put on Jerry style voice) whenever somebody committed the crime of...well...getting wet upon a hold.
Top marks to Graeme for bringing this up and I wonder if Ben is aware that it was such a big meme back in the day?
-
I was just trying to offer some lo-fi tips on making the next one even better. ;D
Something like an £80 Tascam DR05 (http://www.richersounds.com/product/personal-digital-recorders/tascam/dr05/tasc-dr05) or a Zoom H1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-Handy-Recorder-24bit-microSD/dp/B0042UGFVW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380295453&sr=8-3&keywords=zoom+h1) might be a good investment, otherwise I have a mic adaptor that plugs into an old ipod. Not sure of the quality but it may be pretty good. Let me know if you want it.

I've recently bought something similar (though a better version made by Sony). You are welcome to borrow it, as long as you don't let Ben get any wet on it.

That was brilliant! Malc next?

I've emailed John Gaskins but not heard back yet.
Good idea about Malc.

Quality article by Ben and quality comeback from Fred Roughling. Moony was trying to keep those original grade parameters in check but they expanded anyway.

Could someone offer a scan?

Here you go. I tried uploading the images to ukb but made a right fist of it. If you want it as a pdf PM me and I'll email it to you. From OTE 53, Dec '95/ Jan '96.

Whatever happen to Adler?
-
I tried uploading the images to ukb but made a right fist of it.
If I remember correctly image hosting on UKB was disabled a long time ago and you have to host them elsewhere, whether thats Flickr, Imgur, Imageshack etc. etc..
Flickr provide direct access to the BBCode for embedding and back-linking pictures to the Flickr page (which is one of their T&C).
-
Whatever happen to Adler?
Don't know, but he works in a climbing gym in Dresden these days

finally got round to watching this today, excellent stuff. agreed about the sound but as cowboyhat said, its the content thats more important.
would love to see some more interviews
-
Excellent interview, really enjoyed it. Don't really care that much about the technical hitches when the content is this good. And that question about use of speed! Straight out of the Louis Theroux book of disarming but deadly interview technique!
Gaskins would be good to see, but a few other suggestions:
Dougie Hall
Martin Boysen
Bob Smith
Pete Kirton
Rob Gawthorpe
Simon Nadin
Al Manson
Jerry Peel
John Allen
George Smith
Dave Lyon
Phil Davidson
-
Fuck that, get Dave Thomas on!
-
Hows about Jason Myers? Sean Myles? Ritchie Patterson? Simon Nadin?
But yeah I'd also vote for dave thomas.
-
simon nadin, so good they interviewed him twice?
-
martin boysen might be an easy one with his autobiog coming out soon?
-
Dom Lee and Dan Lee
Gary Gibson
Andy Cave
-
Another vote for George Smith and Dave Lyon, and Simon Nadin. Gaskins and Malc too obviously, it would be really interesting to hear their voices. We should have a poll!
-
I enjoyed the interview, it snowballed after the drugs question tho.
I want to hear Jerrys side of the headlock story
Richard Simpson next... Someone need to give him a grilling.
-
 Now that I would pay lots to watch. It'd be like Oprah and Armstong but better.
-
dom n dan lee? it'd be a one way interview! i've worked with dan a lot over the yrs and whilst being a beast, one of the nicest guys i've met etc i don't think it would be a frank interview :kiss2:
-
fair enough, how about the freeman brothers interview the woodward brothers?
-
are you trying to get at least one person i've worked with everytime on these lists guy? :P
-
i've only had a quick look but i didn't notice john dunne in there?
-
are you trying to get at least one person i've worked with everytime on these lists guy? :P
every series needs a theme
-
It's just you are such a sociable butterfly dense.
-
i've only had a quick look but i didn't notice john dunne in there?
John Dunne interviewed by Patta would be awesome
Patta: "Well John, you never did that route at Earl did you, you lying twat"
John: "Go fuck yourself you loud mouthed dwarf"
Interveiw ends to the sound of Patta's head banging on the floor
-

Better than that, I'd like to see Patta interview/argue with himself - becoming increasingly furious and ending with a 'does not compute' explosion...
-
Can we get Si O'Connor interviewing Rich Simpson?
-
Ben Heason interviewing Simpson.
-
Ben Heason interviewing in the ring with Simpson.
To think Simpson accused him of lying about ascents, turns out it was very much a case of the lady doth protesteth!
-
I heard a rumour that Rich started questioning Ben's stuff to pre-empt Ben questioning Rich's ascent of AD... I have no idea if the rumour is true or not.
-
thats not true in any way
-
stupid question but is the interview supposed to load from the "as promised" on page one? when i click this all i get is a picture of ben. some people would say that should be enough but i'm sat here with aquamarine coloured headphones on while 20 guys are looking at me with hate in their eyes waiting to get on the same pc. i am trying to access it from something that came out before a 56k modem
-
The new Peak Rock book which will be out at the end of November has a bunch of juicy snippets from interviews with several folks on the list (and many who weren't...)! Ben, Jerry, Jason Myers, Big Ron, Rob Gawthorpe, Marc Le Menestrel, Al Williams, John Welford, Ned Freewilly and many more, and that's only in the bouldering bits.
The Shark will never manage to interview all those folks before the book is published, so reduce you're waiting time and order a copy now.
Dense - Are the headphones aquamarine because they are meant for children?
-
i see what you've done there, that was mean
its going to be the only book in my bookcases, thats not a joke either
-
What happened to 'Strength secrets of the Russian supermen'?
-
thats in the cellar, out of sight out of mind
i'm gonna steal jonathon livingstone seagull off you, thats the only other book i want
-
£2.12 on amazon, from what I hear you're good for that.
Probably worth picking up a copy of the film too, from what I read the soundtrack might be Neil Diamond's finest moment.
-
Iv'e got some interesting things to tell !!!!
-
Iv'e got some interesting things to tell !!!!
I bet.
-
Fuck that, get Dave Thomas on!
yes
ask him "are bouldering mats 'anti-climbing'?"
I'd be happy to work with DT until we had an edit that he agreed with
-
John Redhead would still be my interview of choice. He'd have to wear his paper mâché cock too
-
Finally got round to watching this. Great video, thanks Shark!

I've been meaning to watch this for ages and finally got around to it. Nice one Ben, and great stuff Simon. Roll on Johnny G. ;D

I've been trying to find out why cuboard received all this -ve karma but keep getting directed here, there doesn't seem to be anything remotely offensive?

thread split. He said some offensive things (in my opinion) about gay people

No they haven't slackers. Had to check the other thread then in case there'd been a bit of Alan Jamesery going on! :o

 :sorry: Scanned through and missed them.
