]There's a rumour it's open tonight, can anyone confirm this?
Who's going?
-
Just rang a nice lady @ fit city pool (0161 792 2847) who was able to confirm it's open, possibly till Christmas.
I forget to confirm the closing time, but last time I was down there it did close up @ 7pm.
-
I knew about the new restricted opening hours, which make an after work visit impractical, but the rumour was that tonight was supposed to be a one off/trial of extended opening.
-
Open until 21:30 tonight for anyone who fancies some old-school Bendcrete action.
-
ohhh, very tempted, might be down there
-
I've been going quite a bit recently. Generally it's been just me, and the lad on the desk. Like the Marie Celeste, but with more crimps. As I wrote in my last post on the Broughton thread , there is no longer a till. Just ask nicely. I'd go tonight, but as I spent last night in hospital, I think my dearest would cut my goolies off if I did.
Current times are from 10am:
Mon - 5pm
Tues - 7pm
Weds - 7pm
Thurs - 7pm
Fri - 1.30pm
Sat - 1.30pm
Sun - closed.
Be aware it may close without warning at an earlier time if no-one from the Database computer business is using it (they're slated to take over in Jan 2013 & the only users of the centre now, apart from climbers).
As I'm still working through the 6a+ s I'll be going a lot between now and Xmas in a frantic attempt to tick as much of the guidebook as poss.
-
Dave Hinton has sorted out the later opening tonight, hopefully a few people will make it down. Unfortunately I've tweaked my back so probably won't make it this week. Would like to get some Broughton action in so hopefully make it next week if becomes a regular thing.
-
I'd be keen for a regular weekly evening session if it could be sorted. Nice one.
-
Open again tomorrow night until 9.30pm. (27.11.12)
-

So, see you tomorrow? Those problems won't lank themselves you know.

So, see you tomorrow? Those problems won't lank themselves you know.
Should be there to demonstrate some quality height related technique.
-
A decent few turned up and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves on some old school problems. Hopefully Dave will manage to make it a regular thing - I'd almost forgotten how good Broughton is!
-
My shoulders and fingers had definitely forgotten how unforgiving Broughton is, too much fannying about on blobby nonsense and heel hooks had made we weak. I knew I was in trouble when I tried knee-barring the flake on secteur 3, something I now feel deeply ashamed of.
:sorry:
-
Broughton will now be open every tuesday evening until 9.30pm for the foreseeable future.
Not sure yet about opening times over xmas but I will find out and post as soon as I know.
Please advertise and support. :icon_beerchug: :icon_beerchug:
-
:great:
Good work, Dave.
-
Last Tuesday night session is tonight until next year. I'll post xmas/ new year opening times as soon as I know them.
-
Excellent turnout yesterday evening. Old and new faces. I have a large chalk bucket (light blue) that somebody left behind.
Between xmas and new year the centre may well be open, I would call first on 0161 792 2375.
Otherwise it's Tuesday 8th January 2013.
See you all in the new year when the serious dieting and crimping will begin.
-
Good stuff Dave, didn't manage to make yesterday but will be up for some nasty crimp training in the new year.
-
What the car parking situation like? do they still have a guard!
-
No, it's not as a busy sports centre as before. It didn't cross my mind tbh, I don't think a few climbers' cars is massively tempting to the local yoofs.
-
Ok I'll be there for some crimptastic training in jan :strongbench:
-
2013 Tuesdays evenings start tomorrow.
Looking forward to seeing old and new faces.

For those thinking of coming down tomorrow night (tuesday 15th Jan), I'll try and get them to put some heat on in the afternoon to take the edge of the chill.
Remember for anyone new, just turn up with £3.60 and you have 1000+ established problems to keep you warm!
-
Last tuesday despite the very low temperatures outside the wall was in great nick/friction helped by a nice heater in the room.
Not sure if we'll get it tomorrow but I'll try.
Last week's attendance register had a quite a few O's placed next to the regular's names.
Man up everyone and get down.
Also I made a mistake last week the admission charge is £3.70 not £3.60!
-
Finger is dodgy after last week Dave, so may not be seeing you for a few weeks. Thanks for the work you have put in.
Jon
-
OK so we're nearly at the end of January. The diets should be showing some results. Time to build up the finger strength.
Last year the best conditions especially at Malham were in March.
Work remembering that Broughton 6a will give you the necessary finger strength for all the routes up to 8a at Malham!!
See you all tomorrow evening.
-
I feckin miss Broughton! Those were the days.
-
Hi Dave, can't make this week because of work but should be on for next assuming no return to arctic conditions. Ian
-
Dave, wish I was in Manc on Tuesdays to check it out. Superb effort for drumming up the troops though..
-
A reminder to everyone to get down this Tuesday night.
Unfortunately can't be there myself as I've got a 'parents evening' to do.
I know a few folks have been put off by the idea of a 'baltic' broughton session, but on many occassions we have had heaters in the room plus the fans are no longer pushing freezing air into the room so conditions have been little different to those found on other indoor walls.
It's a perfect time to get yourself 'Malham' ready especially as Malham is drying rapidly.
Remember also £3.80 entrance and new faces always welcome.
-
Had the place to myself when I was there one afternoon a couple of weeks ago, my first visit in over 5 years.
Like the use of the Jenga blocks also!

If anyone has :-
Obsession
New Dawn
Mescalito
Renaissance
L'Obsession
Herbie
Baboo
Zoolook
Raindogs
Groove
The Oak
Predator
Cry Freedom
and a host of others, harder and easier on their 2013 ticklists then:
there is no better place to prepare.
A gentle reminder that you won't find any plastic, coloured and 'sticky out' footholds on any of the above.
See you tomorrow

Still open Tuesdays Dave? i.e. tonight?
cheers
-
Open for 'crimping' tonight.
P.S. I believe Malham is perfectly dry

Excellent turn out last night. Great to see lots of new faces.
Please remember the guide is still available at:

Don't think I've ever seen it so busy, about 25 at one point :2thumbsup:

I've just been informed by Salford Council that they will be continuing to run Broughton under the same conditions for a further period of at least 6 months. I have been asked whether we want to continue with the late openings on tuesdays.
I will reply today and continue the arrangement however I will inform them that numbers might be lower if the late evenings and favourable weather allow some of us the opportuntity to take our 'Broughton Power' outside!
If you can't make it outside or the weather is rubbish please remember then that Tuesday nights at Broughton is an available indoor option.
Before easter we had an number of students from manchester/salford enjoying the evenings if anyone could inform the relevant student unions of the above it would be very much appreciated. :icon_beerchug:

That's great news Dave. Thank you for all your hard work to keep the Tuesday evenings open.

:o Is this right?! I've been spending a lot of daytimes at Broughton recently and would be interested to see how the gains translate.
I'm primarily a boulderer, but have recently been thinking about getting back on a rope again. I seem to be able to flash or tick most 6b+'s at Broughton in a few goes so am wondering what sort of UK sport grades I should be looking at? Obviously based on the assumption that I can make some endurance improvements and with the caveat that each crag is different to the next.
-
Flashing Broughton 6b+ is a good grade. They're lower font 7s IMO. I generally think of Broughton 6b as ~ F7A as a rule but it will vary. You can work out the route comparison.
Maybe more interesting would be to go to the back page and try the traverses. I think the route grades are the harsh end of accurate.
-
Ah okay thanks, that's useful. I was struggling a bit with a standard conversion as I always thought of UK 6b as about V4/V5, but clearly Broughton's graded a bit harder than that.
Some of the 6c's feel Font 7B+ at least I thought, but I guess that would tally with what you're saying.
Didn't know there were traverses in the back, will have a look next time.
-
Go to http://broughtonpower.wetpaint.com/ (http://broughtonpower.wetpaint.com/) home page and click on 'Download Nick's very latest problem list and get ticking.' to get the spreadsheet guide.
Go to line 1184: the traverses are listed there (ie 'the back' of the guide if you print it all off).
-
at the risk of appearing stupid - how does the number of holds work?
Are they labelled on the wall or do you have to refer to a crib sheet?
Thinking of having my lunchtime climbs and maybe an afterwork once a week at Broughton...

The holds are numbered on the wall itself, problems refer to the hold numbers. Some are quite faint, so you need 'Broughton eyes' to work them out...

If you can flash 6b+ at Broughton, you're going very well!!

Thanks
Broughton Power, Broughton eyes...
Am I going to need any other upgrades?

Having only recently been turned onto the joys of Broughton I can highly recommend it! The problems are plentiful and reet awesome!

if you climb enough at Broughton, everything else gets upgraded automatically, stamina, strength, power, technique, etc etc.......
-
So, to recap, the post about opening still on Tuesdays sounded a bit conditional. Is Broughton open every Tuesday, daytime and evenings till ten?
-
Last time I was there was about 4 weeks ago, and I spoke to Geoff Hodges who runs Salford Community Leisure. I was told that they are still hoping to transfer the building over Broughton Database and further council meetings were about to happen to proceed with this plan. When and if that happens then the 'climbers' will have to make an arrangement with the Database to secure access. In the meantime, if people would like to visit, I suggest you either go through the daytime or on tuesday evenings. However, it's probably best to phone ahead first to check and save yourself a wasted journey although for a totally different experience its only a few minutes away from Rockover's Bouldering Wall.
There isn't a direct phone line to Broughton anymore but if you phone Broughton Baths or 0161 792 2375 they will be able to tell you if the wall/centre is open.
If anyone has anymore up to date info, please keep me informed.
thanks
P.s. I need to get there myself, yesterday I twice fell off Obsession moving up to the chain!!
-
Popped in quickly yesterday afternoon. Couldn't get through on the number before, but I there was no issue. The guy at the desk had no idea what was going to happen in the future.
Still the best thing since cheese on toast, and better than that place down the road, although its looking messy at the minute. I was going to tidy up, but I wasn't sure if half the matts were piled in the middle of the room for a reason.
-
Anyone know if it's still open on Tuesday evenings?

2nd hand info - but I heard Salford Council and Database failed to agree a lease, so the place is shutting on the 20th of December. Would be a real shame if so.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at the moment.

+1
Still popular with a lot of climbers, it'd be a tragedy. I'll ring the DATABASE to try to get further information/confirmation.
EDIT: Just rang DATABASE who are hoping to take over the lease and would be looking to keep the climbing centre open if they did (they've been in contact with the BMC regarding this), but there has been no movement or confirmation of the fate of the centre. The current leaseholders are Salford Community Leisure.
-
BMC have posted on facebook that it closes on December 20th.
:(
-
Real shame to see it go. Broughton I salute you
-
The best wall ever thanks for the power!
-
I received confirmation yesterday from Salford Council of the closure on the 20th of december.
Unfortunately Salford Council decided not to give the lease to Broughton Database.
The council is aware that the boulder, boards and mats are the property of the 'climbers' and are happy for these to be removed with arrangement.
Sad day, shame the level of support for wall over the last few years has been so limited.
-
Tragic loss wish I had the money to buy the lease. Big thanks to Jim who
let me and Paul build the board in the nineties and an even bigger one to
Dave Hinton .
-
-
Mass Tuesday session anyone?
-
Ps. That's jims last chance of getting thin up the swanny!
-
Carn't make Tuesday is it likely to be open a week on thurs ???
-
I'll be there tomorrow, can ask.
-
Thanks :2thumbsup:
-
Broughton will be open till 10pm next Thursday they said. Then that's it :'(
I took some video footage for posterity, will post if I can work out how to edit the stuff.
-
The place was already looking barer tonight, with some of the woody holds having been removed by their owners.
Ah well.
-
Hopefully be there next thurs trying to get a bit of posse together from the old days!
-
 :'( :'( :'(
-
Rest in peace, you've given us good times...

I have just been told this morning by Salford Leisure that Broughton will now not close until the end of march 2014!
Current access arrangements should be stay the same although this will need to be confirmed as there are discussions to be had with staff over extensions of their contracts.
This at least gives us 3 more months to use the wall and to plan/decide if anything can be salvaged etc.
For the 'connoisseurs of power' you have a window of opportunity.
Merry xmas to the deputy Mayor of Salford for his decision. :icon_beerchug:
-
shit that was quick.
Effort Dave.
It feels like a stay of execution though. What can we as climbers realistically do?
-
Nice one dave :2thumbsup:
-
:clap2:

Create a mould of it and reproduce dozens of copies :)

Hi does anyone know what time is broughton open from on thursday??
-
Hi does anyone know what time is broughton open from on thursday??
Dunno, but give them a ring on 0161 792 2375.
Just spotted this on the BMC site.
The best way to help the effort to save the wall would be to increase usage of the wall in the next few months.
I was down on Tuesday and the man on the reception was taking a list of climber's names, I think as evidence of wall usage. I counted 17 people. So it seems like a continued show of support is the thing to do.
-
Thanks i'm going to try and go every thurs till end of march see you there
If anyone wants to share a lift from the Chester area on a thurs eve let me know
-
well i went last night the place is as awesome as i remember a crimpers paradise not a blob in sight!!! i got well and truly spanked . Please support the place its open on a tuesday and thurday eves till the end of march thanks to Dave Hinton. Broughton power for ever!!! :bounce:

Good scene tonight. Sadly a reliable source informs me that the place will shut its doors for the last time on March 24.
And that, will be that. :'(
-
yes looks like the 24th is sadly the end!! Sorry i missed it last night will be there next thurs :weakbench:
-
The end is nigh. Final session tonight.
