Title: Silverdale for the Family - Crags and things to do.......
Post by: galpinos on July 01, 2020, 11:00:53 am
I'm off to Silverdale for a week's family camping in July* and am after any hints/tips for the following:

Bouldering for me - Easy to get to locations suitable for a single mat, I've never bouldered around here. Grades mid sixes to low/mid sevens. I'm assuming the answer will be "Woodwell & Trowbarrow" but any more insight would be great.
Climbing for the kids - Any locations ideal for either bouldering or top roping for a 4yo and 7yo (focus on 7yo and 4yo will lose interest). Trowbarrow/Warton
Ace Family stuff - Anything we should be doing, that's great for either fair weather or (especially) wet weather family activities.....

Any help/advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance.....

*assuming this plague infested isle doesn't require a return to effective house arrest

If the weathers nice Newbiggin is super family friendly. Easy flat walk-in and apart from sheep poo not much else to worry about.

There are loads of small crags in the guide I’ve not been to that look ace for family exploring though...

Leighton moss twitchers paradise has a good cafe and prob lots to do.

Trowbarrow is great for kids on bikes lots of little bumps and jumps on the quarry floor (witnessed lots of non climbing family groups there)

Second Leighton Moss. Really nice reserve with loads of good bird life if you are into that kind of thing.

Trowbarrow is great for kids, always see some there messing about.

Bouldering definitely needs more than one pad though. Kids would probably enjoy the Red Wall traverses or you could stick a top rope up for the routes as well.

It's a bit further, but Hutton Roof is a beautiful spot.

I clocked this the other day and thought it looked pretty nice:

If you look through the feed there are a few tagged with Silverdale or nearby.

You’re <30 min from Kendal there too. And the S.Lakes steam railway (I think?) is about the same time away. Lakeside Haverthwaite railway I think???

Booths in Carnforth.

I’ve got ticks from the walk in at Warton - and there’s often some banger racing/trials bike stuff near there at the weekend (that I’ve seen at a distance and heard) before though that’s a bit left field for family entertainment. Arniside is nice - think there’s also guided/escorted walking over the sands there too sometimes... tide is quite special when it comes in fast there.

Lots to do..

Not sure how much of that stuff will be going on currently Tom? I guess things could be on their way to reopening.

Yup. Fair point. Brain dump whilst supervising the toddler.

Stroll down the coast from arnside as far as legs allow, back for chippy tea on the front. Hutton Roof is def a good spot and nicely enclosed for corralling. Limestone pavement near Newbiggin. Fairy Steps is nice too. Wolf House gallery used to produce the finest flapjacks known to man, haven’t sampled recently. Takeouts maybe?

Just a quick thanks to all who contributed. We had a fantastic trip (despite my eldest being attached by a small dog at the location shown in Paul B's instagram link!)

Totally failed on getting any climbing in but a couple of nice runs for me, a nice walk and plenty of beack rock scrambling/mud sand playing. It's a lovely area and a great campsite (Gibraltar Farm). I loved walking up to the farm with my thermos for a litre of fresh raw milk whilst the kids were just walking up (they slept in till 8am every morning!).

Will definitely be back for:

Had a chippy tea from Arnside and coffee, cakes and pizza from the Wolf House Gallery as it was opposite the campsite, lush!

Wolf House is basically the main reason I go bouldering in the Silverdale area 😄
