Seeing as the Jah Rastafari thread has been generating quite a bit of attention. I thought the forum needed a thread for the music which is at the roots of almost ever single popular style currently on the go!
DISCUSS!
Here are few of my favourites.
J.B.Lenoir :Slow Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbje6cyAzqY#)
R.L. Burnside: See My Jumper Hanging On the Line (1978) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_DOnKJ232M&feature=related#)
Blind Willie McTell - Statesboro Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnWxZtI3ONY#)

Remember kids "The blues isn't about feeling better. It's about making other people feel WORSE"
Son House - Death Letter Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jN5vqEyV7g#)
-
Kevin Coyne - House On The Hill (live1973) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2no4xBL-zc#)
Another one of my all time top ten favourite songs of all time.

Top work on Son House. Absolutely boss!
Here is a quote from R. L. Burnside after he was committed of murdering a man at a Dice game.
"I didn't mean to kill nobody ... I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head. Him dying was between him and the Lord."
As rough as a badger's bum! I think you have to live to blues to play the blues.

I'd agree with that. I think it's great that there are people like Seasick Steve around keeping the blues vibe alive in this day and age.
-
I agree with you about Seasick Steve. It is good to see the blues still going strong.
Here is old timer with another absolute tune!
Furry Lewis - When I lay my burden down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCqbKdnHZTs#)

Thanks everyone for posting your top hits. Especially like the African blues. It had a really good vibe. Also it goes without saying that Dylan is totally amazing and it is a shame he has never more than dabbled in the blues. Because when he does he produces absolute gems.
Here is an amazing Dylan song covered on the compilation album 'Dark was the Night' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Was_the_Night). A really good album with a good cause. Named after the famous Blind Willie Johnson song. Original version of the song is brilliant too, but can't find it online.
Antony + Bryce Dessner - I Was Young When I Left Home - (10 of 31) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_aNG6Uz9u8#)
On another tack and not strictly blues. Gil Scott-Heron's final album is a work of complete genius. Check out this highlight.
Gil Scott-Heron - 'I'm New Here' (official video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_astp3BjM#ws)
And keep the top hits coming!

Some amazing guitar playing on this one...
Mississippi Fred McDowell - Shake 'Em On Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64T6ugyWXAA&feature=related#)

Loved the Son House, and the Gil Scott Heron song was so good the missus just walked in with the new album
-
Really like this from one of Beck's earlier albums

You See Me Laughin' (1 of 4) 2002 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPlX2K1vl-A#)
Good documentary on youtube about the blues.
-
Currently a very good programme on the iplayer called 'Blues America'. Well worth a watch.
-
Love this kind of stuff. My dad was really into blues, and it's stuck with me too.
Taj Mahal - Come on in my Kitchen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrstDQPmG5A#)
Also Taj Mahal, but can't forget this one
Taj Mahal Nobody's Business But My Own (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trcb0LZfuZA#)
Can't find a video of it, but I love this Steve Philips guitar piece - 125 Express (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0CP1KvxvBEQZTdpMHN3WVk0SUE/edit?usp=sharing)
Great cover of Station Blues
North Mississippi All Stars - Station Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mewYPrvhh9s#)
I've got time for Ian Siegal, although I'm not usually convinced by English people trying to sound American. Here he is covering a classic seemingly with a broken foot.
Ian Siegal - I'll Fly Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4usJxjNH9ak#ws)
One of his own (not sure what the video is about):
Ian Siegal - Curses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FnPpdXlTxE#)
There are some great fun videos of live gigs, I must try and get to see him
Ian Siegal doing Nick Lowe's All Men are Liars followed by Bryan Adams in the style of Johnny Cash... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGajpAuhaWQ#ws)
I know he's already been mentioned but but R.L. Burnside!
R.L. Burnside's version of Hard Time Killing Floor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-jjmPn837A#ws)
The Black Keys do everything from Traditional Blues to Hip Hop really well.
The Black Keys doing trad blues Everywhere I Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k-502Lj-lU#)
Saw Seasick Steve in Dublin a few years back, really great atmosphere. He's such a natural storyteller/performer.

I like a bit of Josh White
JOSH WHITE Jelly jelly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qrby5o_WO8#)

thats an amazing anecdote!
i've got an album he did with the jon spencer blues explosion which is really good. not listened to it for a while. i should dig it out.
-
Interestingly the black keys are on the same record label, Fat Possum (http://www.fatpossum.com) that went back and rediscovered all the Mississippi hill country blues singers most famously R.L.Burnside.
Good article about Fat Possum http://www.theguardian.com/music/2003/nov/16/popandrock2 (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2003/nov/16/popandrock2)
I love that other track Hard time killing floor you linked. Amazing.
-
Cool. Actually they seemed to be playing some blues at the climbing wall last night. It wasn't on very loudly, and I don't really concentrate on music when climbing, so not sure exactly what it was though.
-
For all those that like their southern american music, be it blues, jazz, country etc. Reginald D Hunter has done a very nice mini series for the BBC. Highly recommend.

Enjoy. I did!
-
Forgot about this thread - saw Tim Holehouse the other night at Stragglers Corner in Sheffield doing solo blues with a stomp box. Really good blues to say the least and worth checking (https://soundcloud.com/tim-holehouse) out IMO.
-
Whilst not strickly blues, Kurt Viles new album (b’lieve i’m goin down) is worth a look if you like the Americana type vibe of chilled out guitars riffs and washed out vocals. I've been enjoying it.

Have you listened to much of Josh T Pearson?
-
Yeah Josh T Pearson is very good. Very melancholy though, whereas Kurt Vile is a little more uplifting.
-
Just listening now - definitely less melancholic but still good for a solo headphone session.
-
I listened to 'Last of the Country Gentlemen' a lot the year it came out (and saw him three times too, a brilliant, very funny performer) and have been hoping for more from him. He's touring again this summer so perhaps there is something coming?
Those who haven't come across it should check out his first band 'Lift to Experience' and their album "The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads,' a kind of double post-rock concept album - and brilliant with it.
Great beard too.
-
A friend of mine was always trying to convince me to listen to 'Lift to Experience', maybe i'll have to give them another bash, since Josh T Pearson's solo stuff is very good. I've heard he is good live, but pretty weird.
-
Been awhile since I posted anything in here but thought I'd share a couple things I've been listening to recently which I think are really excellent.
Songhoy blues - Mali blues band. Saw them live last year and they were brilliant. Highly recommend.
https://open.spotify.com/artist/5fpQ5Qt2BKgoVBSMw4Z17Z?si=_Ry9_AsbS16_zAayOFl86Q
Grinderman - Nick Cave's side project from a few years ago. Not strictly blues but I think one of best things Nick Cave has ever done. Proper gritty. Saw them live at Latitude and he is an excellent front man (which I'm sure surprises no-one).

I've seen Songhoy Blues live two or three times at festivals and its always been a lot of fun.

Would this be several years ago at Latitude? Because I was there too. Was good.
-
Yeah must have been about ten years ago now that I think about it. He had a glorious moustache I seem to remember.
