Just copy and paste the pages URL (and not when viewed full-screen, when its a little video in the YouTube page), don't bother with the "embed html code" link YouTube provides (these forums use BBcode for mark-up when posting anyway, unless you're an administrator), the forum software sorts everything out automagically...

I think one of the most popular covers has got to be The Pogues version of Fairytale of New York. When you listen to the Christy Moore version you can see why it's not so popular!
Then there's Summer in the City by The Stranglers.
Don't forget, somewhat controversially I would imagine, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix which I prefer to the original.

I think the Pogues' version is the original. And Christy Moore covers it on his live album. Incidentally I like both versions.
Apparently Dylan has said that he "liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this (all along the watchtower) and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way". Praise indeed.
-
I'm a big fan of the Futureheads' version of Hounds of Love. The Kate Bush original version is good, but not as good.
-
Rockwell - Aria (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bVU5-TTP4E#)
Hell, if we're on covers which aren't covers but are in fact samples, as per Soap's slightly questionable post... Anyhoo, Cocteau Twins sampling abound.
-
We aren't on covers which aren't covers.
-
I'm willing to take the flak for that video.
-
Are you disqualified for covering your own songs?
George Baker - Una Paloma Blanca 2005 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAKMB_QCi6Y#)
(I'm almost sure I've posted that one before. But after a mellow evening on the Aberlour I care not, but apologize if it happens to be true)

The irony of Karen Carpenter singing about eating seafood.
I'm not sure where to post the covers I find now - they could so easily fit into 'the worst covers' thread.

Originally by Dion and the Belmonts( Trev and Carlos), this is a far better version. Dion just looked like he'd never had a girlfriend and preferred thumbing through the lingerie section of his mums catalogues.....whereas Paul Anka actually sounds like he's experienced jizzed pants in the presence of another human. (I include the original for clarification).

Robert Wyatt - At Last I Am Free (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xQx4G11pRo#)
Amazing vulnerability.
-
I like that. Nice to see there's still some Robert Wyatt fans about. A complete coincidence as I was listening to Rock Bottom last night what an album.
-
If you ever get a chance to see The Unthanks live (and you should take it if you do) they normally do a wonderful cover of 'Sea Song' - its on their 'The Bairns' album too
-
I'd never heard them before. That's a really good version and I'd never noticed some of the lines before, completely different song, the way cover versions should be.
-
Glad you enjoyed it.
While we're on a Robert Wyatt tip we shouldn't forget that the song he is best known for is, of course, a cover (well he didn't write it anyway)
robert wyatt shipbuilding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6T9qp9XbRY#)

Perfectly topical cover, but I did think it a bit shit as a stand-alone. I love Cash though, he'd be doing the speaking clock and the shipping forecast if I had my way.

Some great covers, this is a subject I can go on forever on...
The great jazz pianist and composer Billy Taylor wrote the spiritual “I wish I knew (how it would feel to be free)” to his daughter sometime in the 1950s.
Dr. Taylor himself recorded the song for his mostly forgotten 1963 album “Right Here, Right Now”. Some time later he and Dick Dallas wrote lyrics to go with the piece, and Nina Simone recorded the song (with vocals) for her album “Silk & Soul” (1968). With lyrics the song became a part of the soundtrack for the American civil rights movement.
Everybody knows what a fantastic singer Nina Simone was, and I guess everyone has heard Nina Simone's album Silk & Soul, but sometimes we forget what an awe-inspiring pianist and improviser Dr. Simone was.
