Bubba/Mike made public that he wanted to raise some cash by selling UKB and UK Caving a few weeks ago. Toby (tobyfk) and I took an interest as we have a business background, like UKB and have some time on our hands. From the start we wanted Mike to stay involved - he has agreed, which is great. Mike should be proud of UKB: he has let it develop a distinct character and community. As the new custodians we want to keep it that way, as well as make it commercially viable for the three of us. With a bit of thought hopefully the two aren't incompatible. We've got a few half-baked ideas but won't rush into anything and are open to suggestions.
Anyone who might want to advertise or whatever (on UKB or UKCaving) should contact me either PM'ing or by email: http://scr.im/simonlee (http://scr.im/simonlee) Meanwhile several people have said they'd like the UKChrisCragg's banner (Toby's work) on a UKB t- shirt. If there is demand (email or pm me to reserve) we can get some printed up."
-
Thank Fuck it's you.
You know I didn't mean those things I said about you previously?
Pssst... wanna buy some articles?
-
 sounds good.
I like the idea of a Tshirt too - so put me down for one ;D
-
Thank fook for that! I was almost worried for a second. Good effort lads :great:
-
That's great news Simon.
Really pleased that it's two of our own who've bought the site.
-
:agree:
-
I wonder what Craggs would think about the Peak being full of those shirts
I'd buy another UKB hoodie/shirt, and maybe a Craggs one too.
So do you boys get the magic squares now?
-
:great: Keeping it in the family :)
Look forward to the evolution of the site.
I'd definitely buy t-shirts (possibly one of the current banner, although I can think of other previously suggested designs that I'd prefer).
-
Excellent news... Well done guys.
-
Good luck with your ideas guys.
I like the idea of a t-shirt that just reads "dire at every level"
Pretty much sums up my climbing right now too.
-
Good effort lads, thats great news - keep it in the family is right!!
On the t-shirt front I'd definitely buy another, and a hoodie - maybe one of the Chris Craggs ones but some of the other designs were ace too!
-
I need another hoodie but I'm not sure how much I want to wear anything that looks, from a distance, like I am advertising UKC.
-
Glad it's being kept in the family, and good luck with your future endeavours Simon and Toby with making this viable for you.
"dire at every level"
Good one for a t-shirt as well I reckon.
Put me down for a Craggs shirt.
-
Good luck with your ideas guys.
I like the idea of a t-shirt that just reads "dire at every level"
:agree: actually, a b&w outline or negative effect of your Avatar Nai would be an ace T shirt logo..
-
Nice one Simon & Toby. Best of luck with the new venture... I'm sure it will be great ;D
Stick me down for a hoodie (but old designs if poss?)
Biggest thanks to Mike (and the posters) for making this place the way it is in the first place!!
-
actually, a b&w outline or negative effect of your Avatar Nai would be an ace T shirt logo..
If any of the photoshop wizards agree get in touch and I'll send you the original image to play with.
-
:)
I'll have a tee.
-
I'd just like to formally say welcome on board to Simon and Toby.
We've (obviously) been having a lot of discussion behind the scenes and I'm confident that they will do the right thing by UKB and that they appreciate what makes this place the number one online community for many of us.
It's also been a real financial bonus for me to lift me out of a bit of a current hole - funny how smashing my car up has led to all this!
Finally, I'd like to just say a huge huge thankyou to all your support over the years and for the dedication, good humour and loyalty to UKB that so many of you have shown - this place would be nothing without all you
Damn! Is that a bit of grit in my eye.... ;)
-
Put me down for a Craggs shirt.
We'll put Sir down for an XXXL. I'm sure it will ride up with wear.
-
Great news that it's from within the community.good luck with the site. I'll have a tshirt, please.
-
Oh god not Simon Lee.... I'd rather Ken Wilson took the reins.
Where's the icon for 'wildly uncontrollable sheep dog'
;)
-
Nice work gents, keeping it in the family .
I like nai's avatar. Not sure I'd wear something so personal as the craggs banner on a tee (though it is genius) - that would be juvenile and offensive...
"UKB - dire at every level" would be good though.
-
:agree:
I'd go with a simple
"UKB" on the front and
Dire at every level - Chris Craggs
on the back.
-
I was thinking:
UGLY
PRIMITIVE
JUVENILE
OFFENSIVE
in lovely big Bodoni MT Black...
-
Now that I would buy.
-
I like nai's avatar.
me too. i'd have one of them.
-
Or the House of Holland-style...
PEE ON ME
FOR UKB
-
THE DEVIL WEARS SCARPA
???
-
dense's new avatar
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2a5gb4z.jpg)
-
yep I'd buy a 'dire at every level' shirt, no doubt.
nice...
-
Did Dense link Conviction Parts 1 and 2?
Good work Simon and Toby :)
-
he would of had to of done part 1 in order to link it
-
Good stuff guys, great news.
-
I was thinking:
UGLY
PRIMITIVE
JUVENILE
OFFENSIVE
in lovely big Bodoni MT Black...
That was my initial thought, with "dire at every level" on the front and maybe a subtle ukb on the sleeve.
But equally "dire at every level" across the back and ukb/ukbouldering on the front
or some comibination of, but i wouldn't wear the UKC mockup, as magpie said, from afar you could be mistaken...
-
it need to be subtle.
Also I'd still like a 'anyone for danny's' t-shirt
-
I was interested to read you guys haven't met. Figured you were friends in a traditional sense. Guess it's just an automatic assumption on my part.
Good luck.
-
They've got red squares... run for the hills!
-
Now we have a Newbie admin and a Menacing Presence admin, what is the world coming to? ;)
-
Now we have a Newbie admin and a Menacing Presence admin, what is the world coming to? ;)
:) assuming they've not figured out how to nobble the status nor waddage we can float (for a while) in the ether of being Forum Hero's... :)

The new owners know how to quote! Hallelujah!
-
:great:
I hope that even with the adverts / shop whatever the juvenile pontification and generally nil level of moderation will continue.
Keeping bubba on was a stroke of genius.
as for clothing..
[ wad ] [ punter ] is the logo I prefer.
-
Nice move! Glad you are on board Simon, i think that Toby bloke is a bit of knob though, and he smells of wee.
-
Seriously, it's great that it's been bought by someone within our little community.
The rumour I'd heard previously was that we'd been bought by venture capitalists who were going to break the site up and sell it off in bits. The word was that Johnny Brown had been bought by a North Wales Limestone bouldering site, Magpie had been sold to a site run by Hamsters that specialised in squeezing wee Scots Lasses until their eyes bulged, and that the NHS had repossessed PaulB.
It's a relief...
-
I was hoping to be the first to be banned by the new owners you daft cunt.
-
Can we pay extra for personalised message T shirts? I don't say much on this site but do turn it on for laughs and good information. Hence, as a professional with a bit of spare cash, if I can help the site by getting slightly overcharged for a modified standard UKB T shirt which said as an example:
' "Steve... you've forgotten to take your medication again." Mick Ryan'
How could I not take up the offer? Helping to keep UKB, UKB and all that.
-
I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

So, what car you going to get to celebrate your dot com fortune, Bubbs?

wtf would he do w/ a Delorean when he could have the Pink Panther car?!

-
where does unreliable fit in then?
It's the 12th level of direness built in to the DeLorean DMC-12.
Apparently most reliability issues can be sorted by installing a Linux operating system.
-
Unfortunately wheels aren't currently supported in linux.
-
Well done Shark and Toby - very pleased its kept in the family.
Would it be too much like brown nosing to wad you both ?
-
Unfortunately wheels aren't currently supported in linux.
Actually most linux distros have a wheel (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#su).
Its the default name for the group that has permissions to access the root user account (and then wreck all sorts of havoc if you don't know what you're doing, or more usefully perform installs and updates etc. etc.).
There ends todays completely useless and irreverent Linux insight (http://www.themixingbowl.org/static/img/smilies/geek.gif).

I was with you all the way up to "actually most" there.

I was with you all the way up to "actually most" there.
 He just did the exact same thing to me via the new Google Buzz thing, it's best just to nod and smile at him when it happens, dave.
-
I'd buy a 'dire at every level' shirt.
-
Bloody hell, me and Norton were having our lunch in Saas Fee taking a break from the lovely powder that no one else seems to be finding when Dolly texts Norton saying that the Shark has bought UKB. Our first thoughts were 'how ironic a fat weak chuffer has bought UKB'
-
a fat weak chuffer has bought UKB'
to be fair to Simon he's not fat
-
Compared to Graeme everybody's fat.
-
-
But he is crap
-
I'd buy a 'dire at every level' shirt.
Deffo. I think a short run of T shirts is required to celebrete the occasion, with "dire at every level" on the front
and
"ALL NEWUKB
Now with added ugly, primitive, juvenile and offensive"
on the back
-
It must be me but I think that every Chris Craggs guide book is dire at every level;:(sic) ugly, primitive, juvenile and offensive!
:wank:
-
I'll have a t-shirt please. Mid-blue L or XL please.
-
Well done Shark and Toby - very pleased its kept in the family.
Would it be too much like brown nosing to wad you both ?
Probably but do it anyway. We are keen to bring the unit cost per wad point down.
-
Haha, seems you're my landlord again Simon. :beer2:
-
This is great news. Don't know what you have planned for the site, but I would be more than happy to buy my kit via this site to ensure that this amazing community continues for years to come. I just checked my profile and I have 'wasted' over 13 days of my life over the last 7 years on UKB. Can't wait to waste some more!
-
Pleased UKB has been saved.
I am up for a Anyone for Danny's T.
-
Nice one Si
Put me down for a limited edition Craggs tee
-
Haha, seems you're my landlord again Simon. :beer2:
Mark and me enticing you away from the clutches of Derby seems a looong time ago :beer2:
-
I'm so pleased! Thanks a lot guys. This site has been part of my life since they day I decided route climbing wasn't for me and whilst I don't spend a huge amount of time on here compared to some, it's somewhere I can always rely on for a laugh/the latest news/top videos/banter etc etc and my life would have been a lot sadder without it.
The 14 days, 6 hours and 39 minutes that I've spent on here in the last 6 years and 28 days have been totally worth it and we'll all ever be in your debt guys. Thanks again!
-
Awww, this thread is making me a bit weepy. Shall we have a group hug? :'( :gin&hormones:

Just an idea, but what about jazzing up the Wiki a bit more to help increase traffic?
I get the impression its pretty underused at the moment. It appears only myself and GCW have written anything up to date.
But it has the potential to be another shop-front for UKB if its bulked out with more content and has some banner adds and/or AdWords included.
I've just added a section on the Handy Web-Cams, and at some (vague) point in the future will try and get all of the topos on Vimeo included on the site, but can't modify the inclusion of banners/adwords.
Just an idea that might help put a few more pennies in the coffers.

Is there an option to store topos etc on UKB/the Wiki? I ask because Vimeo storage sizes are becoming more limited nowadays and things like the Brownstones guide are quite big
I guess there is as its a MediaWiki installation (that used by Wikipedia) and you can upload images at least to that, although the button selection for editing is rather more limited than Wikipedia's implementation, need to go and read the MediaWiki docs (local help files don't appear to be installed).
Just tried uploading a PDF, but it appears I'm unable to, upon submitting the file to be uploaded it blanks the path to the PDF from the box and tells me the field is empty. Perhaps there is currently a block on uploading *.pdf files? The history of uploaded files only lists *.gif 's.
Would need to have this changed somehow if possible if the Wiki is to have the topos included (perhaps due to the limitation's appearing on Vimeo, and to promote UKB further).
-
A more obvious link to the Wiki might be a good idea too, I never know where to find it.
This is where I go back out to the Home page and there's a massive flashing banner for it. :-[
-
Quick answers:
- wiki logins may need to be sorted after the recent forum upgrades - some users on ukcaving can't get in.
- agree that the wiki needs more publicity and this is something being discussed.
- wiki can store pdfs but needs to be explicitly enabled.
- yes magpie, something like the navbar at http://ukcaving.com/board (http://ukcaving.com/board) might be a good idea.
-
yes magpie, something like the navbar at http://ukcaving.com/board (http://ukcaving.com/board) might be a good idea.
Yes, that's the sort of thing I meant. Then nosy people might be more inclined to click, at the moment it's only going to get looked at by people who know it is there.
-
I'm another who can't log on to the wiki.
If the log in can be sorted I'll upload my tweaked version(s) of Klimb as mentioned in the 2010 training diary thread.

Ok, I'll try to get it sorted over the next few days...
-
- wiki can store pdfs but needs to be explicitly enabled.
Cool, let us know and I'll have a go at migrating/mirroring the topos over.

I’m pleased to announce that Scouse deadlifting wad and coding genius Sam Williams (Climbing Sheep) is my new partner and co-owner of UKB. It seems fitting to mark the occasion with selling UKB tee shirts again. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=w_bl_sl_s_ap_web_83450031?ie=UTF8&node=83450031&field-brandtextbin=UK+Bouldering)
From a business point of view we want to get the site back on to a more stable financial and technology footing. A major update of the site in reliability, look and functionality is overdue. Sam will be working on this over the next few months and we will look for feedback on a test site when its ready.
Thanks to our sponsors past and present who have kept the boat afloat for the last 8 years. We will look afresh at ways to ensure that our Sponsors get excellent value for their support of UKB.
As for the community nature and character of UKB and it being a place for keen climbers to have open discussions long may that continue.
-
Does this mean that I can start being more outspoken again? And can we have dave back? ;) :worms:
Oh, and all hail to our new IO#2

He quit posting after his moderator status was removed for criticising the way the forum update was handled as I understand it.

Welcome IO3!
I still really like the site even if it seems a bit quiet these days. Hope it keeps going :)

One could percieve a conflict of interest if a mod. launches another online bouldering-focused media platform.
-
Nah. The thing I always liked about ukb is it didn’t seem about making money and had a more subversive edge than the other channel. Not everyone has to have a ‘good attitude’ here. It’s maybe lost a bit of that over the years. These days we all conform to the system haha
