I have been chatting to Ms 'pie about her cycle ride next week and apparently she's a bit nervous about her chances of survival and the probability of DEATH due to exhaustion (or getting eaten by wild bears). So I thought what better way to celebrate this than post a topic where her UKB fan club can speculate - and even wager if you like - on how long she'll last.
Some information:
Cycle schedule is as follows:
Mon 13 April Inverness - Carrbridge 30 miles
Tue 14 April Carrbridge - Newtonmore 30 miles
Wed 15 April Newtonmore - Calvine 30 miles
Thu 16 April Calvine - Kenmore 34 miles
Fri 17 April Kenmore - Callander 41 miles
Sat 18 April Callander - Glasgow 53 miles
Cycle elevation is as follows:
http://www.cycle-n-sleep.co.uk/elevation/elevinverness.htm (http://www.cycle-n-sleep.co.uk/elevation/elevinverness.htm) - note that she only goes to Glasgow (well if she makes it hehe).
Magpie twit feed so you can read her last words:
http://twitter.com/MsMPie (http://twitter.com/MsMPie)
I think that covers it...

Go Lynds!

Don't think that just because I am in the arse end of nowhere that I am not still
stalking you all online watching everything. :spank:
I'm not dead yet, but I only cycled from the flat to the station this morning. I have however had the best day ever today going on a boat trip at John O Groats, so if I die in the next week, I'll die happy, it was a 'pretty much exclusively for Magpie' kind of boat trip.
Death cycle starts Monday, watch this space... or maybe Twitter cause I have worked out how to update it form my phone. 8)

Good luck with it, boat trip sounds very nice. A bit of PSYK and you'll be fine, just remember to dry your shorts properly.

Some very optimistic votes so far!!
Myself, I am torn between:
Death on Monday night - I figure the first big climb out of Inverness will be survivable (cos she's fresh) as would, in theory, some of the later hills (cos she's be warmed up to the riding schedule by then). But I reckon the climb to the Slochd summit tonight (at a guess) - she'll be exhausted from the shock of the first day, and that extra hill will be too much.
Or:
Death on Saturday - Although flat, the longest day, and right at the end. Early on Saturday morning, in theory the last day, but with everything unbearably aching from the previous 5 days, and a demoralising 50 miles to go, I can see the potential for cycling a few miles and just collapsing in a sobbing heap of death.
:-\ :-\ :-\

Pink Anasazi.
Good luck Magpie. You must be insane.
-
Oh dear - check Ms Pie's latest tweet... I think the Spirit of Sharma may have left her ;)
-
Balls, should have voted for Monday after all...!
-
Can't twit from work, what happened?
-
thinks this may be her first and final cycle day, seriously we've run out of food and water and were in the middle of nowhere!
I reckon she'll battle on though :)
-
Pub in Carrbridge should take care of lack of food.
-
A poll without croissants is a poll without dignity.
Is she still going?
(Note to all: no information on saddle soreness is desired or required - thanks)
-
I hear reports from RedTips that Magpie's got a really sore ass, but it's not from the cycling.
-

FFS you people are demanding, isn't a Pain Au Chocolate good enough for you?? It's pretty much a chocolate croissant anyway.
I just waiting for regular twitter updates about "minge mold"...
-
Already too much information.
What with this and the lycra spotting photos, this is not turning into a relaxing evening.
PS Don't start on the chocolate croissants - I have some standards, somewhere.

has taken drugs and applied special lotions, now for bed. XXX
There's dedication, already taken enough punishment to be tender in the situpon, but battles through by using creams ready for the next session.
-
Second day is always the worse - I am voting for Tuesday.
If she makes it past Wednesday, I reckon we are in for the long haul.
Weather forecast anyone?

Weather forecast anyone?
Good point, an important factor to consider. In approx travel order:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/aviemore_forecast_wind.html (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/aviemore_forecast_wind.html)
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ta/finnart_forecast_wind.html (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ta/finnart_forecast_wind.html)
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/st/greenock_forecast_wind.html (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/st/greenock_forecast_wind.html)
Disappointingly settled and the wind is in a favourable direction although the cooler north easterlys could bring into play Death By Freezing (assuming she survives mini-horse encounters etc etc).
Tuesday you say, hmmm, I ended up voting for Sat but I wish I could retract that. Looking at the elevation, there's some serious hillage around Wednesday and I think that might be the optimum exhaustion point....
-
I am usually not a purveyor of waddage, but if Mags gets to the weekend then I will dish out a Wad point, purely for entertainment provided along the way!
-
Oh god. This is so hard.
Im in agony, my knees are killing me, its only the second night and im going to have to bust out the 30mg codeine tonight just so i can sleep.
There are awful death hills tomorrow, so those who haven't voted yet, i reckon wednesday is a safe bet.
Oh and massive thanks to those who advised me to buy the special cream and 2 sorts of padding, they have, quite literally, saved my ass.
Im going to bed now, in the hope that 14 hours sleep turns me into chris hoy.
-
When you hit the hills tomorrow and it feels hard then think of us and the waddage you will receive in completion and the ribbing you will receive on failure.
-
Hang in there Magpie... a good nights sleep will work wonders.
-
Sleep, loads of water... slap that god damn cream on... Eat like a pig...
Ride your own pace....
DO IT Girl...
Take a LOT of analgesia.. Paracetamol, codiene and an antiflammatory are all synagistic.
Go on!!!!

i know the ladys finding the going tough but should you as a medical man be rec omending the use of pharmaceuticals to aid performance.with an attitude like that i bet that the job offers for team doctor on a pro team will rolling in.
-
I suspect Ms Pie would like something stronger than over the counter medication at the moment...
Vote wednesday before it's too late!
-
I'd avoid the codeine if I were you Maggie, it has the unfortunate side effect of constapation.. which can be rather unfortunate when on a long journey,...
-
I voted Saturday. Don't let me down Maggers. Fall in that estuary!
-
Magpie, order up some of this by carrier pigeon. All the best pro cyclists are heinous drug abusers anyway, so why not join them?

AKA Lyndsay slipped and fell onto a train for 10minutes
WHAT?? That's not in the rulebook!

The jury is still very much out on this one - although it seems like it was a matter of health and safety as regards her persisent knee pain, which, given the wee minx has got most of UKB wrapped around her little finger anyway, may sway you big bunch of softies. Having said that I think of anyone had voted for Wednesday as the Day Of Death, it would be a fair win.
P.S. go magpie you little star :p
-
It only sounds like a minor discresion! ... and given on-one had plumped for wednesday, I reckon all bets are still on.
-
Sounds fair.
Latest twit indicates she's still alive and given the lack of grumbling, things might be going okay. However there seems to be a vague air of concern about the increasing distances and given tomorrow is significantly longer yet, Sat could still be an option for expiration.
Go Pie!!
-
Last update was not quite so optimistic...
fucking hates cycling.
-
Latest twit ...
So who are you calling the latest twit then?
-
Just in case anyone still cares, I'm not dead. I am back in Glasgow and I didn't throw my bike in the Clyde. I will not, however, be getting back on it for the foreseeable future. ??? I'll bore you with further pictures / injury updates / general crap in the very near future but now I am going to take painkillers and sleep, thank you all for your support and for the info beforehand, some of it proved invaluable. ;)
-
She's alive! :bounce:
Well done, Pie
-
Well done, girl!
-
Well done Magpie!
-
Awesome effort Magpie - i'm fucked after a puny 50k in the Lakes!
-
yay! well done!
-
Thank you all. I'm quite pleased with myself. I'll post some of the less shit / more hilarious pictures on Flickr when I've sorted through them, just as proof I was actually on a bike ride and not just faking ;)
Bubba, I'm beyond fucked, I'm currently in bed with two watermelon sized knees and I have no intention of moving in the near future. ;D
-
Better than knee sized watermelons. Sterling effort.
-
Fiend:
When it comes to the end of the year and you get that best of 09 thread / non climbing related urge you make damn sure this gets a vote option
Coz this girlz got true grit.
Respect
-
Gosh, it was almost feels worth it for all the wad points I got :-[
Bless you all for being so sweet, I feel all warm and fuzzy now (yet also, still aching!)
-
Very well done Ms Pie, although I must confess I'm mildly disappointed by your apparent survival - I'm down a few beers now.
-
I'm still a bit conused about the mention of trains on pg 2?
-
For clarity, I got a train 11 miles one day because when I woke up I couldn't walk, never mind cycle, my knees were so swollen (old, recurrent problem which I foolishly didn't think would be irritated by the cycling, boy was I wrong). It was a particularly hilly and tough day so I made the decision that a short train ride would give the painkillers time to kick in and mean that I should be able to complete the rest of the cycle rather than bail totally after shafting my knees completely early on.
And while I am confessing to being generally shit and not cycling the whole way, so I don't get called up on it at a later date when I mention it in the trip report I am planning on writing and know some of you will read, we also didn't do the last few miles back into Glasgow city centre, we got another train. Various reasons; the main one being that my knees were totally shot and my cycling partner's were close behind, we'd done the two longest and toughest days back to back right at the end and we were gubbed. It took us so long on the final day to get as far as we did that we'd have ended up cycling home in the dark, with no lights, down the very scenic (and total flat) dual carriageway. Being girls and not owners of particularly large or easily dented egos, we bailed a little bit early and still took the tick.
We cycled well over 200+ miles and I have injuries which nobody ever needs to hear about, if I lose out on the full 8a tick in some people's minds cause I didn't do the 5b mantle at the end then so be it. Not wanting to be accused of being the next Si/Scott and claiming wild ascents outside my capabilities, it seemed only right to confess, in full. ;)
And now, with a clear conscience, I will go and sort through the 796 photos to see if any are worth sharing with the group.
-
Hmmm... Pie you didn't really need to justify all that, what you did was very impressive regardless of exact details, and your health and safety is more important than some spurious notion of getting "the tick". I think you did very well for a fluffy wee kitten-like thing (and without toooo much drama...;)), it sounds like a great adventure.
Having said that, I wonder if that means that Saturday now counts as the day of death-equivalent?? :)

No worries. I was not questioning your integrity in any way, just wasn't sure if it was a pisstake or serious. I wouldn't want to cycle into Glasgow city centre either. Amazing effort regardless. Now you just need to do the Glasgow - Land's End Section.
I have a mate who is planning on doing JoG to LE offroad on a mountain bike this summer. Sounds like hard work!
-
yeah, well done...!
-
Now you just need to do the Glasgow - Land's End Section.
Glasgow to Carlisle has been suggested, it's the rest of Route 7, which we did the North half of. Maybe next year, when I have forgotten the pain!
Brief Flickr set is here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/52787528@N00/sets/72157617084821342/) They're not brilliant photos, lets just gloss over how rough I look by the end of the week  , and I have given up trying to get them in the right order, so they don't really run in sequence but they give you an idea, should you be bored enough to have a look. ;)
-
I suggest Glasgow to The Plantation; you will be able to claim all sorts of quick ascents after that.

Would you like to comment?
I would, but wtf is all I can think of.
-
They were for our own protection, we were going on a boat trip and you get wet, so they gave us giant men of the sea things to wear. Sadly they didn't work too well, which is why two photos later I am cutting about taking pictures of a wind farm with my jeans at my ankles and a pashmina as a skirt
These are not dry jeans:

You are SO my favourite today. :-[

Man up, you've had the pleasure of being squeezed in person, on more than one occasion. :-*

well done!

Is it fuck. I want my wad point back! ;)

Sadly, they come from 3 different cameras, two of which don't have the dates set right so that won't work. :( Ta though, good to know I always have full tech support on hand in every thread ;)
-
Ah, ok that's a pain.
Oh and well done btw, sounds like it was a tough ride.
-
Having said that, I wonder if that means that Saturday now counts as the day of death-equivalent?? :)
That would mean I win Fiend and we both know you wouldn't want that. ;)
-
I think we can all agree that, since I am not dead, I WIN. Therefor any drinks / prizes / hero worship should be directed my way. Just to save any arguments like. ;)
