He’d been at a boarding school only four years before his death. I gather from those that have been though that sort of system that it takes a little longer for school inculcated habits to dissipate.

Before I clicked the link I'd wondered how they'd ID it as Irvine and not anybody else.

Didn't expect to see his name stitched neatly into his sock!

As the title says - remains of Sandy Irvine (a foot in a boot) have been found on Everest, 100 years after he and Mallory were last seen high on the mountain. As I understand it, this is the first time any trace of Irvine has been found. Whether or not it will get us any closer to knowing if they reached the summit seems unclear.

I should imagine that it is possible to backtrack the flow from where he appeared now, how long he took to get there etc and make an informed estimate of where he entered the ice? Maybe there’s too many variables 🤷🏻‍♂️. I have seen similar estimates made for prehistoric artefacts popping out of Icelandic glaciers, so maybe.

I had no idea the SMC took boulder info in. They didn't in the past, but I checked with the publications editor and they're confirmed "you might as well, we might do a boulder guide".

I would hazard a guess that it might be a long time coming...

Im going toook more into the Boolder thing. Findings blocs and topos for rent stuff in Scotland is nigh on impossible.

I was lucky to have charged all batteries in preparation for holiday, now recharging. Worth a look tonight, if you have clear skies. With a display that strong, even a bit of light cloud adds interest. Get a shot of bouldering with aurora above would be something. Must be some great spots for that; Bridestones? Skyline? Queens Crag?

Just as I was going to bed my neighbour shared a photo from an amazing window he has in his house showing the lights in the direction of Earl Crag. As a result, I drove up to Widdop and stood on the dam crest watching the lights in what's got to be one of the darkest spots available to me and it was stunning. I was absolutely gutted to miss the UK version of the aurora but also the southern version that put on quite a show when I was in Australia (but I was in the city rather than out in a rural location). I only took my phone (which is a cheap, Chinese spyware phone) and the photos are typically average so I think I'll try and charge my decent camera for next time.

I'm not sure the SMC takes bouldering info / publishes any bouldering guides Chris? Certainly haven't in the past and I don't see it shown on the new routes page or the publications.

TBH, I think Scotland REALLY needs a good open source user-generated non profit making bouldering topo app. It's just not really commercially viable to produce a guide so it becomes a labour of love for the likes of John Watson etc. and I don't think he's planning another one?

I thought I posted a link to the database uploader it definitely has facility for submitting new problems

https://smc.org.uk/climbs/submission

I am not sure how opensource you want it, but the database is growing and expanding, it might include bouldering too.

https://routes.smc.org.uk/

and the topoeditor someone made (for them?) is open source AFAIK, and really easy to use

Wow - that's amazing!. TBH it looks pretty easy from a coding perspective to make an app for a different area. The difficulty would be wrangling all the existing data into the correct format, getting GPS coordinates and photos for all the problems.

Seconded. Code and data are available here https://github.com/boolder-org

The really nice thing is that the data is separate from the app and then pulled in to the app when it's built, so in theory 'all' you'd need to do is create a data file for another area. Probably not quite as simple as that as I imagine there'll be some bits of the app that are specific to font (e.g. the circuit property on problems won't be applicable to many areas outside font), but overall it'd be an amazing head start.

That was all time Hayden. 2 of the strongest displays in decades this year already! I left my camera running on time lapse video mode in the garden and from about 12:30 until 1:30 the colours fill the screen, even using a 14mm lens. The stats are still holding at really high level and it is forecast to hold until it's dark, but wait and see. Space Weather Live is a great app for tracking it btw, worth downloading it and understanding the numbers.
