I always appreciate a good rant, but must admit that my eyes glazed over after a couple of sentences. This rant did not cure my friday morning ennui

For a pursuit that supposedly attracts rugged individualists, with a disdain for “rules” etc. It’s a community of individuals that seem to spend a disproportionate amount of time and effort bemoaning the lack of those qualities in every other member of said community.
Publicly, loudly and consistently; calling out the world for not following the rules that aren’t, supposedly, there (and those non-rules are very different for each heckler).
Why do we listen?

Adam Ondra is just such a weird target if you are going to have a rant about the state of modern climbing (which I happen to think is very good, I mean it’s not 5 star but it’s certainly competitive)

Is Matt known better in SA? I've never really seen much about him other than his Instagram stuff, not sure if he's a "local" celeb, or more of a social media bod...

As I posted at the time, I climbed with him quite a lot at Montague in 2008 I think. Chris says hi, (sort of! :shrug:.) He was permanently stoned, funny and fun to be around and climb with (In hindsight, I suspect it helped that he was a lot better than me at climbing!) He was already into soloing short routes then (and writing shit prose) but went pretty mental with it later on - soloing death height pumpy routes on slick rock with limitied margin in terms of grades in hand. I enjoyed more recently finding his insta filled with videos of him swinging around trees and stuff wearing just shiny hotpants but found it a bit depressing how quickly he could become bitter in the comments. Clear mental health issues from my uninformed position.

Yeah as people who are considered the 'best' in their sport go, Adam seems to be one of the best role models out there and it seems like a bit of a reach to call him an ego maniac - some pretty good evidence here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPPpdyt1wH/.
Although seeing all this beef does make me wish we got Tyson Fury/Conor McGregor style call-out videos when climbers tick a route, like Adam Ondra standing with all his medals and challeging Seb Bouin to repeat Silence, followed by Seb laughing into the camera and calling Ondra a bitch after downgrading Change. A man can dream.

In one of the best bits of climbing journalism in quite a while, Sam Pryor asked Ondra about the beef when the latter visited the Schoolroom - apparently Ondra thinks the whole thing is pretty funny. I might have misunderstood the post but it seems like there is some irony to disparaging other climbers for 'seeking fame', whilst also posting the rant, on Instagram.....alongside a photo of yourself...

I love that he thinks he’s some kind of wise sage by climbing naked as if it hasn’t been done a million times already. Plenty of pictures of people bollocks naked on walk on by on ukc :lol:
